Although I went to Sprayberry in the early 90’s, I’d begrudgingly have to say that right now, Lassiter, Harrison and Kennesaw Mountain are the three best bands I’ve seen in recent years. Lassiter has two BOA Grand Nationals Championship titles in recent memory and Kennesaw Mountain has come very close to winning it all.
I’d like to point out that Sprayberry came in 2nd in like 1981 or sometime around then and we probably could have whooped Lassiter and anybody else in 1991 and 1992.

Not to be a hater, but SW DeKalb, Stephenson and Redan all employ the use of “horn holders” — fillers who dance and make the band look good, but theu can’t actually PLAY an instrument. All Lithonia Band members can actually PLAY — no horn holders in our band!

Ok Lithonia Mom, you are a hater. I’ve witness the transformation of Dekalb Co. High School bands since the days of the old Walker High and Columbia High bands would slug it out @ Avondale Stadium in the 80’s. Since the 90’s and still today, SWD has been the best. I’ve witness all of Dekalb Co. Bands @ the annual Spring jamboree and it has been no contest, SWD continues to ROCK THE HOUSE!!! Horn holders are @ Stephenson High, where they have a Big Band with no sound. Lithonia has come up but is not ready for the Big Time. Only Redan and MLK can provide a challenge to SWD but like in previous years, SWD has knock their banner down!!!

@ Decatur’s Finest: There is room in DeKalb County for other bands besides SWD. Just because SWD was featured on a lame reality show doesn’t make them the best. Some of the other bands in the southern part of DeKalb County are pretty good, too! I agree with Lithonia Mom –bands with horn holders are prepetrators . . . and SWD DOES have some horn holders. As several have tried to point out…it all depends on the marching style of the band. Bands of America sponsors corps style marching that emphasizes marching technique as well as musicality. Cobb County Schools had winners for a long time in Lassiter and Sprayberry. Now Kennesaw Mt., Harrison, McEachern, Kell and others have joined in to provide more competition from Cobb County. Gary Markam was the head of bands for Cobb County schools and did a fabulous job. I’m not sure if he’s still with the County or not. Loved my days as a band mom and made many fantastic memories on the trips that I chaperoned!

Kennesaw Mountain has the best marching, but their band director is a sadist who over-works the kids. Harrison has the best music and their entire program won the internationally awarded Sudler Flag of Honor (one of only 50 something programs in the world since 1983). They have a music program that produces excellence in all their programs, not just marching.

to trying hard to be patient–The ghetto fabulous comment was unwarranted. No one should be put down because they are born into a non affluent category. Most of the aforementioned bands of Atlanta, Fulton and Dekalb counties don’t have the funds to compete nationally with the schools with affluent parents. Use this medium to honor all those bands that have earned their bragging rights not tear it apart with your ignorant comments. We georgians realized we have the best of all worlds including the high school bands.

I haven’t been to a HS game with a good band in years so I’m speaking purely from what I experienced back in the 80s – early ’00s when I regularly witnessed great HS bands. I’d have to rate the top 10 I’ve seen as:
1. SWD (truly a great band)
2. South Atlanta
3. Booker T. Washington (Is number 1 if u take in to account overall history of a band performing at a high level)
4. McNair
5. Columbia
6. Lucy Laney (Augusta, GA)
7. Redan
8. Towers
9. Crim
10. Stephenson
(I’ve never seen MLK so I can’t call it with them)

I’ve grown up in Cobb County and now teach in Cobb County. The band programs in Cobb County are phenomenal! Lassiter and Kenn. Mtn. usually get all the attention. They have wonderful band directors and huge numbers but the band to watch is Hillgrove. They are in class 4A since they have a smaller enrollment but they pack a huge punch!

No one comes close to the little school of Georgia Walton Academy. They only have 320 in thier highschool and use 7th and 8th graders to fill the ranks. Can anyone else make that claim. The awards are numerous. Even though they are a private school they compete against 5A schools and have a 75% winner average in open competition. Last year they competed on the National Stage, foget Georgia, and finished as one of the best marching bands in the N A T I O N. As Hammer would say….can’t touch this! Oh, and they beat Kennesaw Mountain last year, so much for the Sudler Flag of Honor award.

There is a difference in a band that march and a band that steps.Only bands that ‘’steps” are bold enough to enter the Battle Of The Bands. A marching band will only enter a parade. It is no accident that a marching band will not perform at half time when a stepping band is going to perform also. It seems, most bands are compared to SWD,. I belive that is the measuring tool.If a band is not being compared, that band is probably bland..

As a Columbia Alumni, I couldn’t say anybody’s better than us. We set the standard long time ago like I heard someone say on this blog. Columbia is still the best and we don’t have to dress out half the middle school to look big and sound loud.

Great directors who take the time to get to know the kids and treat them with respect. I have spent many hours with the band and you could not find a more respectful and dedicated group of students. Jeffrey Baker apparently doesn’t go to games out of the Atlanta area. The Ga. Bridgemen have played at halftime against SWD, Stephenson, Parkview, Brookwood, and a number of metro Atlanta bands, and no one has bested them. Not a “Marching Band”, and not a “stepping” band. They are simply the best in the South.

Why does it have to be an Atlanta area band? Bainbridge High School’s band is truly first class. I’ll stack them up against high school band in the south. Over 300 members strong, marched at the Macy’s parade in NYC and featured on the Today show. Now that’s something few Atlanta area high school bands can match.

If SWD was the fetured band in Drumline…. why were that asking members from all over the metro area to try-out to be members of the band in the movie? Seems to me then that it wouldnt totally be SWD’s band. Anyway Frederick Douglass High and Booker T. Washington has set the footprints and paved the way for almost all of the bands in the metro area being shouted out on this forum… But, we are too busy building our careers and getting an education to post that we are the best simply because we already know our status’. I’ve had the occasion to observe metro high school bands for years. Without a shadow of a doubt, MLK Lions are the best all-round marching band in the state. They’ve proven it in academics. They’ve proven it in the overall substance and style of their program. They have classy instructors who turn out an equally classy product. No disrespect to the widely popular and great program at Southwest DeKalb, but they are grossly overrated.

First off, I’m of the controversial opinion that to be a great band you actually have to march a drill AND play flawlessly. So these bands that stand in place, bump and grind, and only utilize two instruments don’t count. That being said, KENNESAW and East Cobb’s WALTON. And Steve R. – you and some students might think Kennesaw’s band director is a sadist today, but I guarantee his students will feel differently when they are succesful adults because of a work ethic instilled by Kennesaw’s directors. You don’t get to be number one without a hard-driving director.

Druid Hills Marching Band is the best. We have pride, we have sound, discipline and love for the band, ourselves, our fellow Divas, and Percussionists. Don’t underestimate us because of our size, it has nothing to do with our musicality, dances, or field shows that have the audiences on their feet every time. I LOVE THE BAND.

I guess if I had to give the nod to a band with a college sound, clean shows, and limited gimmicks….it would have to be Redan. They can hold their own in a parking, on the field, in the stands, etc. It’s been years since I’ve seen a SWD, Stephenson, and MLK show without some big time gimmick.

I think it depends on if you are talking technical marching band, or “entertaining at the games” marching bands. Lassiter & Kennesaw Mountain (and the basically the rest of Cobb county) all compete nationally with Bands of America and Lassiter & Kennesaw Mountain have been national winners. However, these bands don’t focus on entertaining at the football game as much as some other schools in Georgia do…two types of bands. two different categories.

My thing is, I enjoy watching SWD when you all have yo sh** together, but dont act like thats every time you take the field. I have seen Miller Grove and Redan handle you on the field, drumline, and in the stands at times. Sometimes being that big can make u kinda sloppy.
Another thing is, since SWD doesnt go to competitions, how can u honestly lay claim? Drumline is over 5 years old now, its time to get back to seeking excellence and showing out when u perform, not because you are huge and on films and TV.

All of this is hilarious! There are so many great high school bands in the metro Atlanta area. Me being an alumnus of the great SWD there is no need to question where my vote goes. However, I must admit many of the bands mentioned are very good. Regardless of anyone’s opinion on them, SWD is recognized around the world. Many things that some are doing now or are attempting to do now SWD has already done. From parades, to inaugurations, to the olympics, to sporting events, to movies, and tv they have done it. True some of these bands MAY have gotten the best of them a time or two. But let’s be real and honest about this….. SWD has set the standard and others are following in their foosteps. And also keep in mind that many of the band directors in metro Atlanta attended SWD.

I say Columbia has the best band in DEKALB! They are tasteful and can play more than one song. Last year I observed all of the schools that they played and guess what… SWD looked like scarry cats- especially the dance team. They only blew ONE song in the stands the entire game. So SWD, ya’ll may have been the best at one time, but it surely didn’t show last year.
Maybe its me but in my day (89-94 at Cedar Grove) there was a higher level of intensity and participation from students. Let’s make it what it’s really about- fun, competitive sports…

Harrison High School seems destined this year to continue its past successes. They have been ranked nationally in the top 12 high school bands for the last few years and they were one of eight bands selected nationally to march in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade this year. So be sure to watch as they represent Georgia on Thanksgiving Day in New York. However, most importantly, these kids have earned their success..they are even out practicing today, on a Saturday, from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m.! And they love what they do!

I AGREE WITH A LOT OF PEOPLE ON HERE I’M A PROUD BULLDOG BLUE THUNDER WHAT WHAT WHITE LIGHTING BLUE BLUE. HONESTLY, I WILL ALWAYS BELIEVE THAT MY SCHOOL IS THE BEST BAND IN THE LAND BECAUSE THATS MY ALMA MATER JUST LIKE EVERYONE ON HERE BUT SOMEONE MADE THE COMMENT ABOUT WASHINGTON AND DOUGLASS LAYING THE FOUNDATION FOR THESE OTHER BANDS AND THATS TRUE. DECADES BEFORE DRUMLINE AND ANY OTHER MOVIE THATS OUT WE’VE HAVE BEEN HERE AND HANDS DOWN FOR THE WESTSIDE I GIVE IT TO WASHINGTON AND DOUGLASS AND ALSO MAYS. AND SOUTHWEST DEKALB THEY HAVE THERE SEASONS WHEN THEIR GOOD BUT THEIR OVER RATED SERIOUSLY AND AS FOR THEM BEING IN DRUMLINE BE FOR REAL IT WASN’T THAT SERIOUS WE WERE THEIR JUST LIKE EVERY OTHER MARCHING BAND AND FOR THEM TO BE THE BEST I CAN’T TELL WHEN WE WAS AT THE PREMIER WE WAS NEXT TO THEM AND THEY DID KNOW ANY OF THE MUSIC THAT WAS IN THE MOVIE ALMOST EVERYBODY HAD THEIR MUSIC WITH THEM SO WHAT DOES THAT SAY ABOUT THE SUPPOSE TO BE BEST BAND YOU TELL ME. I’LL ONLY GIVE CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE I KNOW MY SCHOOL HAS THEIR TIMES TO BUT WE CAN STILL HOLD IT DOWN.
THE EASTSIDE HAVE A LOT OF GREAT MARCHING BANDS TO LIKE STEPHENSON HIGH NOW I’VE HEARD THEM, U GOT REDAN, MLK, COLUMBIA AND MANY OTHER SCHOOL OH AND I FORGOT MORROW, MUNDY MILLS IF THATS SPELLED RIGHT, LITHONIA, CEDAR GROVE TOO

Newton High (Covington). A few years back, the school brilliantly brought in an new director with a new style which better fit the changing student population… and it worked. Students are so excited about this band they had to hire an assistant director for the first time in many, many years this year. And their excitement and dedication translate to the field– the music is vibrant and incredible as they high step to the beat.

Reigning from Buford High School and representing very well, this band is fresh, unique, highly entertaining, and best of all, precise. They’re musicianship is always phenomenal, no matter how small the band, their sound is as great as their effort and hardwork. Earning superiors for their dedication is nothing new to this band. Every year they accomplish more than the year before. Not only are they easy on the ears, but they’re easy on the eyes as well. They are a uniformed band with a great flag line and dance line, these girls help make the visuals come to life. Their flag work and dance rountines are strong and solid, adding the right techniques at the right moments.Together they are the Buford Marching Band of Wolves! Go Buford!

SWD is a joke and a fraud. When we played them we were thinking we’ll see this great band with precision. Wrong! What we saw (and heard) was a group of off keyed instruments and badly sounding drums playing constantly for 20 minutes in the fist half (doesn’t that violate GHSA rules?). Hillgrove bands is made up of a close community of family, friends, and fans. The fact that the band got so many votes on this post and gets emails from band directors and parents commending the program and the respect and enthusiasim it shows for each and every band that preforms at competitions, just goes to show that hard work, dedication, and love for what you do pays off.
Hillgrove as well as all other bands in cobb county is held in high esteem, and thought it may not be the best (YET) its making its way to the top.
Besides why would you spam a band discussion board i LOVE band and i am in band, it makes up HUUUGE part of my life but really, these are high school kids, they have better things to do, then sit on the computer and type in Hillgrove over and over and over again.

Hillgrove High’s Band is led by phenomenal directors and has an incredibly supportive group of parents…not to mention the Band Crew Rocks! All this in three short years.

HILLGROVE!!!!
First year: no drumline, no pit
Second year: no snares, 9 pit
Third year: 5 bases, 3 tenors, 4 snares, 10 pit
This year: 5 bases, 5 tenors, 7 snare, 12
If that doesn’t prove something, I don’t know what will.

My vote is for Hillgrove in Powder Springs of course!! But I applaud and scream for all the high school bands that actually let their musicianship and talent be the highlight of their show. Not so interested in tons of “props” or just a lot of dancing. Doing the “worm” on the ground while holding your horn does not make you a musician!

Not sure BEST was the appropriate word for this vote. Everyone thinks their band is the best. This poll is more about spirit, enthusiasm, and popularity. Not BEST…..

I’ve had the pleasure to hear plenty of Georgia HS marching bands. But only one stands out in my mind and that’s the Southwest Dekalb High School marching band. Those kids know how to put on a show. I’m from the mark-time-hut roll ankle toe world, thus I can appreciate good technique and sound from SWD. I will say, next time that school from Miami takes the field, please SWD, be ready. Southwest Dekalb, best band in metro-Atlanta!

I love how everyone is so supportive of their respective schools (shout out to Shiloh where my nephew attends!)
This is just in response to everyone who can only state that SWD was in a reality show and the movie “Drumline”. Before and after those recent events SWD also performed in the Macy’s Thanksgiving parade (the first African-American band to do so), played in the Carnival of Flowers in France and was the only band to perform in the opening ceremony for the 1996 Olympics. They also performed in Johannesburg, performed for President GW Bush, were the first high school band in history featured in exhibition performance at the Bands of America National Championship (Indianapolis, Indiana), and performed in the 2006 Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasedena, California. Whoo! That was a long list.
I believe the point of this poll was for everyone to show support for their favorite high school bands-not to bash other schools. You can be proud without putting other bands down. All of these kids have worked their butts off (not to mention their families).
