1) Rita’s
Dining critic Meridith Ford Goldman says, “The power-packed punch of mango ice with vanilla custard from this Philly-based chain (I like mine better without the cookies) will elevate your mood so much that you’re bound to burn some extra calories just by drinking it.”
2) 10 Degrees South’s “Don Pedro”
3) The Varsity’s F.O. (frosted orange)
Krispy Kreme is overrated. Go for the pistachio.
5) Dairy Queen

I’m sorry, but if you serve a foie gras milkshake, you are disqualified. TYPICAL pretentious Atlanta dining people trying to be cool. FLIP will be out of business in no more than a year and a half of two years. Just like all the other trendy Atlanta places.

Burger King people obviously stuffing the box, too. You can’t have soft serve in a great milkshake. I haven’t tried them, but among the fast food places, I think only Hardees and Krystal use real ice cream.

As a chain, Hardee’s make great shakes if can still find one open. Chick fil a is a great choice as well. But Zesto’s calls me to their shakes more often than any other. I love the blueberry “challenge” as I call it. The blueberries are just a little too big for the straw but you still suck as hard as you can to get it through.

Holla.

All of the mentioned milkshake contenders use Red 40 to make you think it’s all strawberry…truth is…they have about 1 strawberry in there for seed appearance and the rest is artificial flavoring. Ok…yes…I looked up everyone’s ingredients way beforehand…yes…I have a stupid allergy to Red 40 so I have to be careful. Winner of the best milkshakes…. “my home”….made by either my wife of 27 years ….or by my kids.

I read all the Chik-Fil-A comments and decided to try one. I got the cookies-and-cream shake (the nearby store clerk’s favorite)….sorry, but it was really kinda bland and boring. Definitely not worth the fat and calories. I wouldn’t get another.

Chic-fil-a. My preference is vanilla. I was disappointed in their attempt with the peach shake. The flavor was good, but the peaches were too chunky and got stuck in the straw.

I’ve had shakes from Dairy Queen (which are very good)
I’ve had shakes from Zestos (delicious)
I’ve had shakes from McDonalds (pretty good)
I’ve had shakes from Checkers (they were ok)
But when I visited Indianapolis this past March. I went to Steak n Shake and had one of their shakes with the vanilla on one side and strawberry on the other side. I have to tell ya, that was THE BEST SHAKE I have had in a very long time. I was trying to control myself, it was that good. Steak n Shake has all of them BEAT, HANDS DOWN. It’s Steak n Shake folks:-)

My two cents on FLIP: Yes, it’s still trendy. Yes, I can see where some would say it’s over-priced (the milkshakes anyway). No, it doesn’t have a drive-thru where you can just go grab a shake. But all I can tell you is it’s been a VERY long time since I visited a restaurant that was supposed to be the latest “in” spot that had me wanting to return over and over. FLIP does that. The milkshakes ARE very good, as well as being fun and whimsical with the flavors (and the food is darn good too by the way). Some people just crack me up, such as the “anti-trenders”, you know the ones, they’ve been all over the board here. Half of ‘em probably haven’t even been to FLIP, yet they knock the place just because it’s considered “trendy”. You know it IS just possible that the place is “hot” right now because it’s actually very good, which I have found to be the case. So yea, have your subjective opinions, that’s all this board is about anyway. You may not like shakes at FLIP, so be it, but don’t be so childish as to knock it SIMPLY because of it’s trendiness.
Oh and I have always loved the Jamoca shakes at Arby’s too.

ZESTO’s Blueberry milkshake is the bomb and the best in Atlanta. It even makes getting panhandled in the parking lot on Ponce worth it. Frosted Orange’s at The Varsity are great and well worth the adventure. Chick-Fil-A’s shakes are very good, and I like the fact that this chain is based in ATL.
