The SEC has won its fifth straight BCS national championship. Auburn has won its first national title since 1957. And the argument continues: What if No. 1 Auburn (14-0) played No. 2 TCU (13-0) on Saturday to settle the national title? We’ll never know.
The incredible thing about a college football season is that in July and August, it just feels like it will never start. Then, once it does, it seems to be over in a couple of heartbeats.
I will always remember the 2010 season because it gave us both the good and the bad that is the game of college football in the 21st century.
You know the good. The game, as it is played on the field, has never been better. Every week there was a new, dramatic story line. Every Saturday there was something that made us go “Wow!”:
**–Oct. 2: For about 90 seconds in Baton Rouge, Tennessee had apparently pulled a stunning upset at LSU. But on what appeared to be the last play of the game, Tennessee’s defense had 13 men on the field. LSU got one more snap and won.
**–Oct. 9: South Carolina upsets Alabama, the defending national champions, to beat the No. 1 team for the first time in school history.
**–Nov. 26: It was a Friday that we will never forget. Auburn rallies from a 24-0 deficit at Alabama and wins a game for the ages, 28-27. Then, in the wee hours of Nov. 27, Nevada ends Boise State’s dreams of playing for the national championship with a field goal in overtime.
I could go on and on. College football is so good now that we EXPECT to have these unforgettable moments week after week. The game rarely disappoints.
But we also had a chance to see college football’s dark side. This is the side that threatens to undermine the long-term credibility of the game with the public that loves it so:
**–The academic scandal at North Carolina that forced the school to suspend as many as 13 players. It turned an ACC championship caliber team into one which was lucky to finish 7-5.
**–Agent gate: One bad decision by one of the game’s premier players (A.J. Green), basically wrecked Georgia’s season. An agent throws a South Florida party for underclassmen because the benefit far outweighs the risk. This problem is not going away. It is only going to get worse if something doesn’t change–and quickly. Unfortunately, the NCAA doesn’t do much of anything quickly. They need to open up the proccess and get these kids talking to agents much earlier in their careers.
**–In June there was the money and power grab that was known as conference expansion and realignment. When it was over the Big Ten had 12 teams, the Big 12 had 10 teams, and the Mountain West had lost its three most high-profile programs: TCU (Big East), Utah (Pac-10), and BYU (Independent). The Pac-10 almost talked Texas into leaving and destroying the Big 12. It was an ugly thing to watch.
**–USC got hammered by the NCAA in the summer and Reggie Bush eventually gave back his Heisman Trophy.
**–While Cameron Newton’s play on the field was magnificent and deserving of the Heisman Trophy, the entire case involving his father was bad for college football. Legally, the NCAA had no choice but to let Newton play based on the facts (or lack of them) in evidence. But this loophole needs to be closed before another season comes around. The guardians of the sport had better hope that no more damning information comes out about this case. We watched USC vacate a national championship and its star player give back a Heisman Trophy. College football does not need another body blow like that.
**–And then there was the Ohio State ruling, which suspended five players for selling stuff given to them by the school. But the NCAA allowed the suspensions to start after they played in the Sugar Bowl. Critics jumped on the NCAA and college football because it appears both are making these rules up as they go along. The ruling made no sense unless you believe Ohio State’s claim that their players had not been instructed on the rules. I don’t.
There was also tragedy:
**–Student photographer Declan Sullivan was killed when the scissor tower where he was filming Notre Dame’s practice collapsed.
**–Eric LeGrand of Rutgers suffered paralysis in a terrbile injury against Army.
**–Mississippi State defensive end Nick Bell lost his battle with cancer. He was only 20 years old.
So again, it was a good season and it was a bad season. Mostly it was a tough season.
The hard edge to the Cameron Newton debate was disturbing. The kid almost lost everything because the father. The Newtons got lucky. The next kid whose father gets caught doing this won’t be so lucky. Parents who act like agents in the future (and get caught) will not be happy with the result.
The nastiness of the BCS debate is disquieting. I want a four-team playoff or a true plus-one, where two teams are picked after the bowls. I believe college football will need to made a change in the post-season format when the current BCS contract expires after the 2013 regular season. The debate has always kept interest high in college football. But I think we are reaching a tipping point where the debate is so destructive that it hurts the game.
In many ways it was another great season but in many I’m glad the season is over. I don’t remember feeling that way too many times.

I’m happy my Auburn Tigers have a BCS trophy in their case. I’m also happy that Cam Newton has gone pro, primarily because it means that Cecil will be guaranteed to stay away from Auburn from now on. He’s a selfish man who tried to sell his son to MSU, and then broke an agreement with Auburn AD Jay Jacobs to stay away from the BCS game.
If the Dawgs want to know what’s wrong, look to your coach and his pathetic waste of so much talent. A co-worker who is a rabid Dawg said yesterday that there’s a rumor that Aaron Murray may be looking to transfer due to the train leaving the rails in Athens. Truth or fiction, and why is Richt even coming back next season?

Great recap, Tony. You summed it up well. Personally, Cam’s prancing around at the end of the championship game (obviously trying to gain Gatorade as a future endorsement contract) seemed very disingenuous and sullied the Cam Redemption story I’d enjoyed all season. Now I believe the apple certainly fall far from Daddy Newton’s tree. Good riddance …

“Old school Auburn Fan”~~If you did, indeed, graduate from Auburn as I did, you should remember the art of critical thinking we learned there. There has not been ONE iota of proof that Cecil Newton or Cam Newton got as much as ONE dollar.in extra benefits. Don’t let the three irresponsible journalists that started this and kept it rolling, three who since have been proved to be lying on critical points, spoil this great season for you.
As to the bammer and UGA fans that are jealous and feel destroyed because of Auburn’s success, Shug wouldn’t have let them get under his skin, don’t let these whiners get under yours.

MikeP – If I rob a bank and don’t get the money but get caught I am still guilty. Cecil Newton ask for the money knowing it was against the rules so he is guilty, whether he got the money or not. Oh yea, congratulations on your National Championship. Another great example of the SEC and its strength.

MikeP, Auburn’s success this year reminds me of the 1997 Florida Marlins. They went out and bought a championship by paying all the huge free agant salaries. The next year they were nothing again because they could no longer afford the huge salaries. Face it — Cam Newton and Nick Fairly were free agents — both JUCO transfers who won’t even stick around for their senior seasons. Newton only played one year at Auburn. This win at any cost mentality isn’t fun to watch. There might have been victories on the field this year, but the whole thing seems like a hollow victory to me. The growing corruption and lack of loyalty (Newton was recruited and signed by Florida) in college football is making it no longer fun to watch. Do you know how sick and tired everyone is hearing about — Cecil Newton was at the game, or Pryor apologizing to a full stadium after being named MVP of the Sugar Bowl. For a game that is supposed to be amateur sports at its best — it really is becoming sickening to watch. If I was an Auburn fan, I wouldn’t feel right about what transpired this year.

“Major findings cited by the NCAA Infractions Committee in imposing penalties on the Alabama football program:”
“A recruit, identified in news reports as Kenny Smith, and his parents were given $20,000 in cash, lodging and entertainment by two Crimson Tide boosters beginning in 1995. The first payment of $10,000 was made in $100 bills delivered in a grocery bag. Smith signed with Alabama but couldn’t meet academic requirements.”
“serial repeat violator”,
You may have missed it but Kenny Smith was featured a year or 2 after this mess on ESPN’s outside the lines segment. Smith had transferred to UT from Alabama and then left UT. Why did he leave UT? In the interview on ESPN and in other statements Smith testified that Philip Fulmer had put intense pressure on him to fabricate allegations against Bama. Smith also stated that Bama had in fact recruited him cleanly.
You may also have missed the fact that Smith and his mother also ended up filing suit against Fulmer. In Fulmer’s largely fabricated ’secret witness testimony” -which is unseemly in its own right- against Alabama Fulmer had told NCAA officials that Smith’s mother was having an affair with an Alabama assistant coach. He was basically just smearning the woman but since the testimony was ’secret” and it was thought that it would never be revealed he went ahead and smeared both Smith and his mother.
Thirdly you may also have missed the fact that in one of the 3 major rules violations of which Bama was accused that Bama self reported the violation. At that point the NCAA per its own rules had a window of 1 year in which to respond to the self reported violation. The NCAA looked into it 18 months later. Bama pointed out to the NCAA that according to its own rules it could not hold Bama accountable for the violation because it had not adhered to its own rule of following up within a 12 month window. The NCAA acknowledged that it was breaking its own rule. The NCAA simply ignored its own rules and hung Bama with the violation. What credibility does an organization have when it doesn’t even follow its own rules and bylaws?
Last- if you know anything about the NCAA you should know that it is a thoroughly corrupt and highly politicized organization that is accountable to NO ONE. It is an organization that would not stand up to public nor congressional scrutiny. For Pete’s sake just look at the inconsistency of the NCAA rulings regarding the 5 Ohio State players vs its rulings on AJ Green, Marcel Dareus, etc. We could spend all day going over inconsistent rulings from the NCAA gestapo.

Below are the facts. Alabama has had 4 major infractions cases brought against it- all 4 cases coming in the 90s and the 2000s so there is no dispute that we’ve had serious issues in the last 15 years with the NCAA. But the facts below are that in alltime numbers of serious infractions cases AU is tied with several other schools for 3rd most. Alabama with 4 major cases is nowhere to be found on the list. Just the facts sir.

Tony, the thing about 2010 I will remember is how much power ESPN is aquiring in college football. The ratings for virtually all the bowl games were down this year because only three bowl games could be seen without cable. I’m for capitalism but in these tough times it is pretty cold to lock out 15 million college football fans from enjoying the bowl season because for whatever reason they do not have access to ESPN. I get it that they’re trying to increase their subscribers, but I don’t think it does the game of college football a lot of good to have so many fans deliberately cut out.

What’s up jumbeaux. Don’t know if you saw the 2011 preseason rankings but it looks like Bama is #2 and LSU is 3 or 5 so both are top 5 in a lot of the polls. Ark is top 10 also in a lot of polls. With Mett at LSU I’m thinking Bama-LSU game already looms large as a potential semi final national title game in 2011. Both are pretty loaded as well as Ark and Miss state has 16 starters back. The west is going to be incredible in 2011. AU will take a step back with the loss of 24 seniors, 4 of 5 O-line starers, and impact players like Cam and Fairley but otherwise 4 teams in the west look incredibly strong for 2011.

“MikeP – If I rob a bank and don’t get the money but get caught I am still guilty. Cecil Newton ask for the money knowing it was against the rules so he is guilty, whether he got the money or not.”
Sure he is. The problem is this: He discussed money with a recruiter for Mississippi State. He did not discuss money at Oklahoma, Tennessee or Auburn, three other places he visited on recruiting trips. It appears that the money talks are linked to only MSU’s Kenny Rogers. Nobody actually involved at any level of this investigation has even alleged that Auburn did anything wrong.
So, if I rob a bank and don’t get any money, should you go to jail?
As for Chris Low saying the investigation isn’t over, he pretty much has to say that. After all, these guys have used Cam Newton and Auburn as their meal ticket for a couple of months now. As more and more of them give up on it, their website hits and viewers are steadily declining. They’ve got to try to keep it alive for as long as they can. Quoting Auburn linebacker Josh Bynes when talking to a reporter from The Sporting News: “If we told you the truth you wouldn’t print it. The truth doesn’t sell”.
There’s nothing like a good scandal, contrived or not, to sell hits on your website! Those guys don’t care about truth, justice or fairness, all they want is to keep the pot stirred so they maintain their business.
For the “Cam had to know” crowd: If, when you were 21, your father was hanging out with hookers or engaging in some other unsavory behavior would you have known it? I wouldn’t have.

Congrats on the huge win over Michigan St. Yes I have noticed the 2011 polls and I’m excited. We both should be in the Top 5.
I agree the West will be tough again. It was great that the 5 in the division finished in the Top 15. That’s unheard of for a conference much less a division.
I would love for both of us to be undefeated when we play. It’s always alot of fun at the Capstone.

Wrong on two counts. SEC investigated for 11 months. NCAA investigated for five months. That’s “challenging”. After all that looking and determining that no money or other benefits changed hands, it was time to move on. You should too.
Dads shopping their kids….Why would they? The minute they get one dollar, the kid loses his eligibility. The NCAA clearly stated that the reason this case ended the way it did was because Cecil Newton received no money.
I see a Cwimpsin Tider put something up about NCAA violations. Auburn football’s last problem with the NCAA was 1991. That’s 20 years of good, clean living on the Rolling Plains. Bammer, however, is leading the pack in recent decades. Does “staring down the barrel” ring a bell in your memory?

Oh by the way, as to Cam, where’s the evidence he knew? Where is the evidence he was paid by Auburn? Where is the evidence he cheated at Florida and was about to get expelled? Where is the evidence?
Hence, NCAA made the right call. Now, if we’re going to start having to sit players mid season with a lack of evidence then I think you just showed every rival how to beat a team. First, make sure you have some boosters meet the kid on campus during an official visit, then second, if he has a breakout season then make an announcement that while on an official visit the kid and or his family asked for money. Then the NCAA will sit the kid and start an investigation.
The only people who’d be for that are UGA fans because they know they’ll never have a kid again that has a breakout season.
