Auburn is going to enjoy this. Big Time

Glendale, Ariz.—There was joy. There was relief. There were smiles of happiness. There were tears. There was incredible exhilaration. There was utter exhaustion.

You could see it all on the floor of University of Phoenix Stadium in the aftermath of Auburn’s 22-19 victory Oregon which gave the Tigers their first national championship since 1957.

Ted Roof, who took more than his fair share of criticism as Auburn’s defensive coordinator the past two seasons, had his arms around his two sons as confetti rained down around him. The former Georgia Tech captain could not be happier. For it was his defense that held the mighty Oregon offense to only 19 points, 30 points below its average.

Oregon’s offense had 12 possessions in the game and Auburn’s defense got nine stops: five punts, two interceptions, and what will become two very big plays in Auburn football history: In the second quarter Mike Blanc stuffed Oregon’s LaMichael James in the end zone for a safety. In the third quarter Auburn stopped Oregon on fourth and goal at the Tigers’ one-yard line.
Oregon came into this game averaging almost 245 rushing yards per game. Auburn held the Ducks to only 75.

“I am so proud of our guys. They stepped up and played the best when we needed it the most,” said Roof. “We didn’t do anything fancy. It was all about effort. All I know is that we’re the national champions. Nothing else matters.”

A lot of people wondered if Cameron Newton had one more great game left in him. He did. Yes, he had a late turnover that allowed Oregon to tie the score make a game-winning drive necessary. Still, it has been an extraordinary season for the Heisman Trophy winner in every sense of the word. He became the flash point of a great debate in college football and it was not pretty. There was a significant portion of the populace that believed that Newton should not be on the field but there were also those who believed in the presumption of innocence. The debate will never be resolved unless more facts in the case emerge down the road. That is another discussion for another day.

Regardless of where you came down on the Newton issue, there was no denying that he was one of the greatest college football players we have seen at the quarterback position. I say WAS because Newton will soon close the door on this controversial chapter of his life and declare for the NFL Draft. We may disagree about Newton’s legacy, but we will certainly never forget him.
“I have never seen a football player go what he went through and continue to perform so well on the field,” said former coach Pat Dye, who beamed during the post-game awards ceremony. “People said a lot of bad things about that kid but it never affected the way he played. He is something special.”

Then there was Gene Chizik, whose hiring in 2009 brought rounds of criticism from those who thought he was not dynamic enough or tough enough to stand up to what Nick Saban was building at Alabama. But when the sun rose this morning in the state of Alabama, the schools had the same number of national championships since Saban arrived in 2007. Chizik has proven to be a rock solid manager of the program who surrounds himself with very talented people.

“It was never about me and proving anybody wrong,” said Chizik, who was the defensive coordinator when Auburn went 13-0 in 2004 and did not get a chance to play for the national championship. “That’s not the way I live my life. From the day we arrived it was about doing what was best for Auburn. I am so proud to be a part of the Auburn family.”

It’s been a great season at Auburn but has also been a draining season for all concerned. The weekly scrutiny which came with the Newton case was not an easy burden to bear. The SEC has won its fifth straight national championship. But the conference had to routinely defend itself against the criticism that it did not exercise due diligence in the Newton case. Now that the SEC has won another championship, that criticism is not going to go away. Such is the nature of success. Off the field, it has been a tough season for college football as a whole.

And what about Auburn for 2011? As is our nature, we will quickly move on to next season. Auburn loses 24 seniors including Wes Byrum, who kicked the winning field goal at the buzzer. Newton will leave as will defensive tackle Nick Fairley, who is more than ready to play at the next level. If you had to guess you would say that Auburn will take a dip next season but such dips are easier to take when you have a crystal football in the trophy case.

Both those issues can wait at least a day or two. Auburn fans will celebrate and know that for the next year they are the national champions while Alabama is not. And if you don’t think that’s important, you do not know the state of Alabama. Auburn is going to enjoy this. Big time.

“They could take it away down the road; I don’t know,” Oregon quarterback Nate Costa said.” That’s unforeseen. For us, it really wouldn’t matter. We know Auburn beat us on the field today.”

Costa said the wins Oregon received from U.S.C.’s having to vacate games because of the Bush ruling did not matter to the Ducks.

“You win the game on the field and that’s really all that matters,” he said.

Since there is a ton of UGA fans on here just asking a question:

The cheap shot that Nick Fairley committed last night on the Oregon running back and the assault that Brandon Spikes did to the UGA running back, what was the difference?

Not to mention the kick when a player is down by the Auburn player on the Oregon player.

Just want an Auburn fan to explain it. Not looking to argue, but it just seems time after time the acts keep repeating themselves.

How did replay not see the Oregon INT at the 10 (AU scored TD a couple plays later to go up 7-3)!?! Kid’s hand/arm was down – IN BOUNDS – equals INT. Plain & Simple.

Overall though, good game. Wonder what TCU is thinking……

Hey Bama Dude,

BCS has nothing to do with the AP poll, JA. Note there is no BCS after the bowls. The AP chooses NCs, not BCS. The BCS chooses number 1 vs number 2.

WAR EAGLE,

I seriously doubt its a Bama fan with all the different posts and handles. The nastiest sniping has been between the AU and Dawg fans ever since the AU-UGA game. Most Bama fans on this blog really haven’t been overly concerned with Auburn’s success this year. The first thing I noticed on the first page was comments from a couple notable dawg fans about Cam, Fairley, and 24 seniors being lost and already looking forward to AU having a down year in 2011.

I congratulate you on your year and I’ve no desire to get in the way of you guys enjoying your day in the sun but I’m already thinking about 9 months from now rather than hatin on AU. I suspect most Bama fans feel the same way.

Yeah, SEC is best and we saw the call. Do you see any space under his hand. Is he balancing on the OR player? What’s the lowest point of his hand/wrist. In other words did he use his fingers to keeps his palm/wrist elevated. No, he didn’t. His wrist is burried in the turf.

Thanks Tide Rising your comments are much appreciated. You are right most of the griping and sour grapes have come from the UGA fans on here (Although you wonder if they are truly fans at all). Most Bama bloggers have been very proud to have the state of Alabama keeping the Title back-to-back. It’s an extraordinary achievement that may never be duplicated. Even though we are arch-rivals I respect the Tide and would never wish awful things on your program or your university. I for one love it when both of us are ranked highly in the Iron Bowl. The stakes have gone way up and it makes for exciting, memorable games year in and year out. Good luck next year and congrats on your victory in Orlando. It was mighty impressive, you guys have a lot to be proud of. War Eagle!

You don’t know the rule. He is only down if his wrist is face down on the turf. That’s the difference between the DJ Williams call and Dyer’s run. Your wrist can touch the ground as long as your hand is planted and your knee is not down. The picture actually proves that you are wrong.

Here’s The Rule straight from the rulebook:

ARTICLE 3. A live ball becomes dead and an official shall sound his whistle or declare it dead:
a. When it goes out of bounds other than a kick that scores after touching the uprights or crossbar, when a ball carrier is out of bounds, or when a ball carrier is so held that his forward progress is stopped. When in question, the ball is dead.
b. When any part of the ball carrier’s body, except his hand or foot, touches the ground or when the ball carrier is tackled or otherwise falls and loses possession of the ball as he contacts the ground with any part of his body, except his hand or foot. …

I will say congratulations to the Auburn Tigers for winning the Title for the SEC. I have no ill will toward any player or coach at Auburn as I know the next 11 months and 20 some odd days that Auburn will hold bragging rights to the Trophy.
As a guy who worked in the football program at Alabama and had a birds eye view of our program for 4 years I know what it is like to be a champion and live with the hype that surrounds a program. The big test for Auburn will be to see how they handle their success now. Most kids fail at keeping the focus, it is a common thread among 18 to 22 year old kids. The people who will come out of the woodwork to offer everything under the sun will get more of these kids into issues than even Auburn fans can imagine, I have witnessed it first hand at two different major college programs, and the problem is there is nothing any coach can do about short of locking these kids in the dressing room of Jordon Hare Stadium.

As an Alabama fan I hope Auburn does not win another National Championship, but as a football fan I take my hat off to your tigers and say job well done.

His hand is cupped. He does not have his fingers spread out elevating him. It is cupped and burried in the turf allowing his wrist to touch.

Before instant replay and booth review a call like this was easier to stomach as you had to defer to the refs as having a better view. You may have not liked it but accepted it.

With booth review a call like this or the OSU call in the game against Miami (Dan Fouts, over and over- Bad Call, Bad Call) really stinks. We all saw what we saw.

Okay let’s say he was down just for the sake of argument. You think they were gonna stop us inside THE 40 yard line with a min. left? We would have driven into FG range and won anyway. Even if we didn’t then you still had OT. To say “one bad call” “gave us the NC” makes you look like a complete fool. Keep it up though, I love to see you give all other reasonable, intelligent Bama Fans a bad name. Oh wait, there aren’t any rational, intelligent Bama fans, are there? Just a recap.

Auburn had 6 drives in the second half, 75 on the last. The avg of the first five was 34.8. Take away the 37 yd gain and Auburn would have netted 38 yds, slightly above their avg. Remember they got 20 after the 37 yds.

So, Auburn begins at the 25 yd line. Add 38 and the kick would have come from 37 yd line. Add 17 for the kick (10 yds for endzone, 7 for spot). A 54 yd kick in a NC game. Show me where it has occured before.

Are you actually averaging the drives from the second half? Dyer went “down” (For argument’s sake) at the 47 yard line with 2:06 on the clock. All we needed was another 25 yards to get in FG range. The way Dyer was running at the end, no one was about to stop him. But it doesn’t matter because he wasn’t down in the first place, so your point is moot anyway LoL NATIONAL CHAMPS MULLET!!!!!
