Five reasons Auburn will beat Oregon for the BCS Championship

Scottsdale, Ariz.–We’ve been analyzing this game for 37 days and it all comes down to this: Tonight, No. 1 Auburn (13-0) can win its first BCS  national championship since 1957 and the fifth straight for the SEC by beating No. 2 Oregon here in the desert.  There are a lot of Auburn people out here without tickets because, if it happens, they want to say for the rest of their lives that they were here.

Can Auburn do it? Or does Oregon win the first national championship in its football history?

Five reasons why I’m picking Auburn:

1. Cameron Newton: A lot the best defensive minds in college football (Nick Saban, John Chavis, Ellis Johnson) have tried to come up with a plan to contain the Auburn quarterback and nobody has been able to do it. Newton led the SEC in rushing and when defenses have stacked the box and forced Newton to throw he has done a remarkable job in the second half of the season. In Newton’s last five games he has completed 69.4 percent of his passes for 1,225 yards, 15 touchdowns and just one interception. Newton now has a chance to become only the 14th player in history to win a Heisman Trophy and then go on to win the national championship.

There is no question that Oregon will gear its fast, physical defense to slow down the running game and hope that Newton throws interceptions.

2. Nick Fairley: When California nearly beat Oregon back in November, the Bears kept it close by using strong pressure up the middle to disrupt the well-timed and agressive offense of the Ducks. Nobody puts pressure up the middle like Auburn’s Nick Fairley. Auburn has been very good about making the opposing quarterback uncomfortable, especially in the second half of games. So look for them to use Fairley to really turn the heat up on Oregon quarterback Darron Thomas. I will throw in this caveat: After the close call against Cal, Oregon started counter punching the pressure up the middle with quick hitting plays on the perimeter. But if  Auburn doesn’t effectively pressure Thomas, that could spell trouble for the Tigers.

3. Toughness: Don’t get me wrong, Oregon is a physical team, albeit smaller than Auburn. They play fast and they play hard. But Auburn has been a mentally tough, resilient team all season. The Tigers have trailed in eight of their 13 victories and four times they rallied from double-digit deficits (including a 24-0 deficit at Alabama) to win. But Auburn has played on the big stage all season and is not in awe of its surroundings. If the game is close in the fourth quarter, you have to like Auburn.

4. The Auburn offensive line: Nobody is talking about these guys but they are probably the key to the game. With the Oregon defense focused on Newton, there are going to be opportunities to run the football with freshman RB Michael Dyer (73.1 ypg) and speedster Onterrio McCalebb. Auburn led the SEC in rushing with 287.2 yards per game. That’s because of an offensive line that starts four seniors and a junior. The four seniors have combined for 161 career starts. If Auburn can run the ball and control the clock, that limits the number of possessions and places for Oregon’s high-power offense. The key to all of that is the offensive line.

5. Wes Byrum: As a true freshman in 2007, Byrum went to Florida a kicked a field goal on the last play of the game to beat No. 4 Florida 20-17 in The Swamp. Since then Byrum has been one of the best clutch kickers in football. He had a bit of a sophomore slump in 2008, hitting just 11 of 19 field goals. But since then Byrum has connected on 30 of 36 attempts. If the game comes down to a late field goal, this kid has the right stuff to make it.

Final Analysis: The SEC has won four straight national championships but the league has never played a Pac-10 team in a title game. Because of its speed and tempo Oregon presents challenges  unlike  any team that Auburn, or anybody else in college football, has ever seen. Defensive stops in this game will be like gold. After a 37-day layoff, both teams will come out with a lot of energy–too much energy, in fact. The team that settles down earliest and starts playing their normal game will have a distinct advantage. I think that team will be Auburn. This could be a repeat of the Texas-USC game where somebody gets a defensive stop and scores on the last possession to win. In a close game I give the edge to Auburn.

Final score: Auburn 35, Oregon 31.

This is going to be a great game. The anticipation is killing me and I’m counting down the hours until the game starts. Both teams are very talented and it is sure to be a great matchup. I do think that Auburn will win though just simply because they played a much tougher schedule and a re battle tested.

For those of you that are holier than thou and keep calling Auburn and Cam cheaters, give it a break. It’s just another excuse that you can use to talk smack and badmouth a team you don’t like.

I can guarantee if it was the same situation but only with the team that you follow and they were in the Nat’l Championship game you’d be singing a different tune. You’re all a bunch of hippocrits and you know it so STFU.

hi there

January 10th, 2011

I’ve watched a couple of Oregon’s games on ESPN3 and there is nothing impressive about their offense EXCEPT tempo. For many games they do nothing until the other team gets tired in the 2nd half…it’s like they can’t score consistently unless the other team is tired.

Good for them, they’ve managed to get 11 of the 12 team they played tired and the one team they didn’t was a very bad Cal team who they beat by like 2 pts.

This game should go a lot like their last bowl game against OSU. People who haven’t seen them play are going to be left wondering how the heck they scored so many points all season.

The game should have been played on New Years Day . ESPN has ruined the bowl games by spreading them out to jan 10. 35 games….119 teams in 1A = 70 teams…70 divided by 119 = 58.8% of all 1A teams now play in a bowl game. No wonder the Dawgs were flat…the game should not have been played.
At least this game is legit. I can’t believe Oregon beats Auburn…but if you watched them play Ala. The Tide should have won that game…period….but Bama would also beat Oregon…whatever….

I think Oregon wins. Auburn does not have the dominating defense that we’ve seen out of past BCS Champions from the SEC. In fact, their defense is average at best. And I don’t care what all the draft experts say. I think Fairley is overrated. Georgia was able to contain him so I’m sure Oregon will have no problem either. In all fairness, there’s not much any defensive lineman can do against Oregon’s fast paced offense. Most of you probably haven’t seen them play. They are the real deal.

The SEC was decidedly down this year and Auburn benefitted. I think this is the year the SEC run finally comes to an end.

Tony, I read and respect yout articles. You are straight to the point and tactful. I think this is the best analysis I have heard so far. The reason I am picking Auburn is because of their ability to improvise. If their offense is not clicking just right they will still find a way to win, however, Oregon’s offense is SO rythym oriented that if Fairley gets to the QB often they will be thrown completely off balance and have no response.

FEAR THE TIGER!!!, oh whoopee he had a good game against LSU. A lot of defenders had good games against LSU this year. Their offense was not very good. If he’s so great, why was Georgia able to contain him. There’s a reason why he was always late getting to Aaron Murray. He was getting his azz blocked. That’s why.

As for the tackles for loss stat, that could be somewhat inflated because Auburn didn’t have any other playmakers on defense making tackles. Akeem Dent led the SEC in tackles for most of the year. Do I think he’s a great player? Hardly.

Let’s see what the NFL thinks about him in a couple of months after they’ve really had a chance to breakdown the film. Right now its just hype.

The NCAA is a freaking joke and anyone worth their salt knows it. The fact that Auburn hasn’t been penalized yet is all that you mindless dumb a$$e$ have going for you. Go back and read the same type of comments from the USC folks in 2004.

Just because nothing was proven does not make it right. Cecil Newton prostituted his own son to play college football. Auburn got him and as a result will win the most tainted national title in NCAA history.

If it was Georgia, I’d be ashamed to answer your question.

Wrong is wrong. Just because the NCAA hasn’t ruled it wrong yet doesn’t change the fact that it is wrong.

I understand JB. I lived in Georgia for 27 years and have numerous Dawg friends and they are not happy.

I believe if Richt loses to Florida next year he is gone, unless he loses to them and wins at least 9 games.

Richt will have even more pressure on him in the WLOCP facing a rookie coach in Muschamp. This is not intended to be a slight to Muschamp. My point is there no reason for the Georgia program to be in its current state. Noone can dispute that Richt is a good man but this all falls back to him.

Thirty-seven days is a long time between games and during a layoff like that the bigger team gets out of shape faster. With their emphasis on fitness, Oregon will be sharp, rested and ready to execute their up-tempo game plan. Auburn, as the bigger team, will be more likely to come in out of shape and sluggish and thus more likely to fall behind early, never to catch up. Newton has been distracted from serious practice, in fact I’ve seen him all over town. This has all the makings of a 38 – 31 Oregon victory.

I just don’t understand how Fairley is so great if our average offensive line was blocking his azz well. So far we’ve got LSU and Mississippi State as supposedly his big games. Big whoop. Take your SEC homer glasses off for a second and go watch some Oregon film. Oregon’s offense craps bigger that those teams. John Wall’s dad died years ago….wow. Do some research before you blast.

John Wall paid $$ back before he could play unlike Enes Kanter.
I disagree in that the NCAA would have slapped AU if they had proof. They have enough of a admittance from Cecil that is needed….they allowed it and they will have egg on their face come Monday night. Newton will play well enough to win, move on, and Chizik hangs around long enough to be penalized for wrongdoings…..that’s more accurate.

Mitch Barnhart, the AD at Kentucky asked them specifically about the Kanter situation and even asked them to explain the differences between the AJ Green, Ohio State 5, Selby, Sidney, Newton and Kanter. They couldn’t. They just fell back on “each of the circumstances were different” crapola.

Oregon has the benefit of watching film and seeing what the great minds of the SEC have done unsuccessfully to stop Auburn. They have the benefit of several weeks to study these great minds, it will be like having additional coaches on their staff. Auburn has a weak defensive backfield that are going to have to do a lot of tackling and covering the slants. Auburn’s defense is at the bottom half of the SEC. This is going to be a shoot out and Oregon will get more bullets in the end to shoot. I think Oregon wins this thing. May I add Auburn has escaped games with Clemson, and some other weaker teams at home, even the game with South Carolina in Auburn. This is not a team that blows anyone out as a norm. The Alabama game was a shock, that none of us can explain, in the SEC championship game, Latimore never played.. Somewhere I keep thinking Cam is going to get hurt not unlike last year’s national championship game, where Texas lost its quarterback in the first quarter, that in my mind allowed Alabama to win. If Newton goes down it would be another early night for the television audience. No team in the country depend on less players than this Auburn team. Thin ice.

I usually pull for the SEC in all Bowl games.
After watching “CHEAPSHOT” Fairley spear Our QB Arron Murray in the back, which shows signs of a COWARD, long after the whistle had blown, I can’t seem to pull for them in this game.
What made the play even worse was Coach Gene Chiznik standing on the sideline cheering him on afterward with his fist raised in the air. Total lack of respect for him and Fairley. This is not what our SEC is all about and to condone this type of play all season long shows lack of respect both Chiznik and Fairley.
The previous 4 Championships won by the SEC were very respectable in both Coaching and respect for the opposing teams.
If it means losing the game to a different conference then so be it.
Have no problem with the Newton scandal, it will work out in the end.

I’ve always thought the UGA coaching job should be the best in the SEC. Georgia is a great state for high school football. UGA really doesn’t have to share the talent with another instate program (Bama and AU fight over a talent pool roughly half the size of Georgia’s). Wow! I am impressed by the historians on this blog. The blogger above is correct, the fifth amendment guarantees trial by jury of peers , liberty, etc. but does not have that specific term. The origin of the term “Guilty until proven Innocent “is not known..though it dates back into mid millineum England and also was used by many in the arguments for the ratification of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights way back in the day. I think Munson was only in his third year then.. so I stand corrected (or exposed since I already knew this).

That said, and semantics aside..I hope you haters here aren’t ever falsely accused of a crime and then judged by the same philosophy you exhibit here. You would be in some deep crap.

Auburn will win this game. The Cecil and Cam issue is the least of AU’s problems with the NCAA folks. The Auburn folks have taken cheating to a new level and that makes SMU look like 1st graders. Tubberville tried his best to control the program while he was coaching but he had alot of stuff going on that even he couldn’t control and that is why the folks with the money wanted him gone!!! Now the money folks are running the show and that is why the HC is in place at AU. The ghetto twins are running the recruiting and almost every program in the SEC knows about the pay for play scheme at the plains. These folks with the money at AU didn’t fall off the applecart yesterday and they know how to spread the money because it started in 1982. The have been caught by accident but ole karma has a way of getting it done in strange ways and it will be done however it will take a little more time due to the FBI is still expanding the gambling and bank failure investigation. You need to think in reverse on this such as don’t look at the frontdoor and the Cam issue because it’s coming from from the backdoor. Football is just a small part of this investigation but it will be more than enough to whack the Tigers. The NCAA will be faced with a huge challenge money wise (legal fees) and manpower wise once the Feds are done with their side of the probe. The NCAA will most likely take the less expensive path and just go for the slushfund to hang Auburn. The SEC would be better off without a program such as Auburn unless the Gov of Alabama removes these thugs and jock sniffers currently on the BOT at Auburn. The inferiority complex these folks at Auburn and they fight it each and everyday.

The gambling investigation ended in October. The FBI turned over all findings to the prosecutors and the prosecution in the case has asked the court for a trial date. That was verified weeks ago on every TV news station in Alabama.

Sorry to rain on your parade, but do try to get yourself current. If the FBI had anything to turn over to anybody concerning Auburn, it would have been done well BEFORE the NCAA declared Cam Newton eligible, which was the first week in December.

Find another thing to hope for. You can always pray that Cam Newton will break a leg or Coach Chizik will leave for another job so he will quit building a powerhouse at Auburn.

Hearing that the AU fans are flocking to the game because they just ‘can’t miss out on this’, reminds me of the momentary ‘thrill’ I get when I start to check a lottery ticket – ‘Gee, wonder how I’ll react if I win that $300 million?’…then I find out I didn’t win and move on. Now Auburn fans have a chance to actually experience ‘winning the lottery’ and, almost, everything that goes with it – the anticipation, the event and the joy of celebration – the only difference is that it’ll take a lot longer for them to realize that they actually didn’t win it after all. That’ll come when the NCAA, the SEC, and, who knows, probably the FBI, tells the world that ‘you-know-who, took you-know-what, from ‘you know’ and all the accolades and championships are rescinded. But look on the bright side AU fans, you’ll have had the ‘experience’ – that’s more than most of the rest of us will have had.

Folks like Tony do not understand or care about football west of the Mississippi, and Auburn could have the edge, but underestimating the Oregon offense and Chip Kelly is a fatal mistake, and quite frankly I believe Cheese Nip will get outflanked by Chip and the Oregon offense.

The question is if Oregon does pull this off and Auburn loses, will Tony come back on the site and man up that the Pac-10 is the better program? Also, you do realize this is the first Pac-10 vs. SEC BCS title game and if Oregon wins, it wil be 1-0 Pac 10 vs. the SEC.

David Granger

January 10th, 2011
12:19 pm

Sure can’t disagree with you here, Mark…I think Auburn should definitely be favored.

But there are a few reasons why Oregon has a chance:
1. Oregon’s offensive pace is brutal. It’s no small coincidence that they’ve got basically two offensive lines that play about equally as much. The Ducks’ offensive line is not as physical as the Auburn defense, but in the fourth quarter they might not have to be.
2. Oregon has a good, varied offense…not as explosive as Auburn, but they can definitely score in many different ways.
3. Auburn’s defensive line has been the key to its defense, and they like to do a little “woofing” after making a good play. One reason Fairley has been accused of being a dirty player is that he’ll just lay on a QB after a sack and jawbone at him a little before letting the guy up…and if the entire Oregon offense is trying to jump up and get back set for another play, that will be more obvious than it has in a lot of SEC games. And things like that could get called for Unsportsmanlike Behavior. And a couple of penalties in the wrong place…especially after you’ve made a good play…can really turn a game around. (We Georgia fans have learned that the hard way over the last few years.)
4. The Oregon secondary has been an NFL factory over the last couple of years, and Cliff Harris is probably another first-rounder.
5. In a couple of key areas…receiving corps, overall defense, kicking coverage…the Ducks lack “wow” factor, but play very solidly as a team…steady, tough, and quick. Everybody plays his assignment, and they rarely allow big plays.
6. Oregon’s punting is more consistent than Auburn’s, which might make a difference in a close game.
7. Oregon’s returners are outstanding. Two of ‘em have track-star speed, and the other (Harris) is an adventure. He bobbles balls, misplays ‘em, makes bad decisions…and is an electrifying return man who can change a game when he gets the ball in his hands.

Pulling for the Tigers, and expect them to win…but I do believe Oregon will give ‘em a game.

“They are not just producing attack ads; they are also going after the bowls’ finances. In complaints to the Internal Revenue Service, they have raised questions involving three of the four bowls that make up the five-game Bowl Championship Series about interest-free loans, high salaries, lobbying payments and lavish perks for some bowl executives. I’m not to worried about recruiting. Things are going great and it looks like we will end up with the nation’s top rated class for the 3rd time in 4 years. Worse we can do is 2nd.

We’re loaded at linebacker so losing Brent Calloway doesn’t hurt one iota. As for him playing rb he’s not nearly as good as Crowell if we get him and not nearly as good as Dee Hart either.

Don’t know if you guys saw it but Hart was the US Army all star game MVP and the US Army player of the year. We’ll be loaded there with Trent Richardson, Dee Hart, and Eddie Lacy is something else. Funniest thing in the bowl season had to be Eddie Lacy bolting through the middle of the Mich St defense for a 62 yd td run and looking back several times to see if any Mich st players were around him. The NCAA has lost any respect anyone ever held for it. The “uneven” (ahem!) penalties it metes out, the “blurred vision” (cough, cough) it displays, are why no one thinks well of the NCAA any more.

I will cheer for almost anyone from the SEC but Auburn this year. Simply can’t do it.

I think we will soon have the “Cam Newton” rule. It will state that if a “student” athlete is shopped by anyone who legitimately has influence over him, that athlete is immediately ineligible, and all games with that athlete are forfeited. Obviously, a father would have influence, but the neighbor’s babysitter probably would not (depends on her looks and “personality” of course). Whether the “shopping” is successful or not, the athlete is tainted goods.

And no more of this “they will serve their suspensions after the bowl game” crap. The games they played in should be forfeited and they should serve their suspensions immediately.

The NCAAs quest for money has lost it any respect it may have had. Too many bowl games! Too long a bowl season! All games should be over by New Year’s Day. Let’s quit subsidizing this quest for money and importance! Fans, you have a chance to change this! Let the bowl sponsors know!
Take away the power of the NCAA, a thoroughly corrupt institution!

The bowl games the SEC lost? They didn’t matter, and I’m sure flash in the pan wouldn’t be touting them as victories for the SEC if they had actually won them.

Besides, those teams didn’t play SEC ball on that day. They didn’t use all that SEC speed, which no other players in any other conference have. That’s why you will find only SEC players at the skill positions in the NFL.

Besides, the teams in those 5 losses were far superior to their opponents – the refs gave all those games away. Everybody knows that if those 5 teams had come to play, they would have won by 50.

I see you have been reading Thayer Evans. That is the fourth hate article he’s written about Auburn in the past month. The first three were demonstrable lies and I suspect this one will be proven to be a lie as well.
Now, if it makes you happy to dream that the NCAA is still pursuing the Cam Newton issue go ahead, but it’s over.

As for the FBI, I hate to mention this but the FBI cannot legally make the results of an investigation available to a private entity. The NCAA has no more right to the information contained in an FBI investigation than does Wal-mart or Goo-goo car wash.
If, say, Alabama was paying players and the FBI ran across this info in an investigation of gamblers bribing legislators, that information would be kept in the FBI files, unavailable to the NCAA, the AJC or your friendly corner Zippy Mart.

PS: Thayer Evans will come out with another tale about Auburn in a day or two, this one implying something wrong in the recruitment of the current class. Like the meaningless article concerning the contractors it will contain no succinct facts and will perhaps be sprinkled with several outright lies, but write it he will.

January 10th, 2011

Lets get this all out in open and end this football season the same way it started,
The NCAA started out by popping numerous schools with investigations and the suspensions of quality players, once the season started they NCAA changed their own rules or adapted them to fit the system that best suits their existence. The NCAA is funded by every School that competes in FBS football, and as in most cases with business, the more money a group makes the more money gets passed around.

Here are some articles that reflect the shortcuts, cheating, and scandals that have been the NORM at Auburn instead of the exception. The way of life of Auburn is to do anything and everything possible to make their program a champion and if you or anyone, any group gets in their way they will stonewall everything. They are following the lead of indicted alumni in federal cases.

Here is some article you all need to read, review before lining up to say SEC SEC SEC, it may change who you are wanting to win.

AU also plays in the toughest division in college football. The top 5 teams in the division are 3-1 in bowls including the 3 wins by blowout proportions. Those 5 teams in the regular season are a combined 34-1 in games vs east divison and nonconference opponents. That’s who AU has played. Oregon- they played 3 teams in the top 25. AU also played 4 opponents who will finish in the top 15.

Saban got his B handed to him against Utah. We thought it an anomaly.
Then we barely beat a bad TN team. We thought it another anomaly.
Then we beat Auburn with 1:47. We thought whatever. Then Auburn handed Alabama the worst ever comeback loss.

I am telling you Saban is overrated. 4 million for what. Gene is paid 2 million and has Auburn sitting pretty. And we all saw the game last year. Maybe Alabama is better than Texas but with Colt out, Texas did not have a chance. Saban was so lucky last year.

Bama blew out a team that was ranked 8 spots ahead of it. But, of course, you dismiss that by saying that MSU didn’t show up. Ok.

You said three teams, not me. You seem to think that bowl results are all that matter. Arkansas went 10-3, but they’re a lousy team because they lost by 5 to a higher ranked team in a bowl? Auburn’s win over Arkansas means nothing as a result?

As I said, Auburn played 5 ranked teams. By way of comparison, Oregon played 1.

So you’re saying that if Al played MSU, AL would win by 42 points in the majority of them??? Exactly.

Did you see the OSU-Ark game. OSU reeks and Trussel tried to give it to Ark in the second half. Ark got beat by a poor OSU team.

You are cherry picking. You discount both Ohio State’s win and MSU’s loss. A 5 point game could have gone to either team. A 42 point win is a thrashing. I’m not saying Bama would beat them by 42 on a regular basis, but it is still a decisive win. Arkansas’ loss was not decisive. It was a close game that was decided within the final minute. Big difference.

Speaking of reading comprehension, I’ve consistently referenced the final regular season AP poll. By the way, math hasn’t changed: 5 is still > 3.

Auburn has no reason to apologize for its schedule.

NO, it’s not a thrashing if the other team does not show up. So I think you agree (you’re the typical slippery SEC fan). If AL played MSU ten times, a 42 point difference would clearly be an exception. So, if an exception, Al’s route means what in the scheme of things. A real barometer or fluke. Of course, a fluke.

Ark still loss to a poor OSU team.

So both games mean what in evaluating the SEC this year. The first, a fluke because MSU left starting string at home. The second, Ark lost to a poor OSU team.

The final AP poll was before bowl games. Stop cherry picking and ending the season when you wish.

Hey Stupid Barnhart – - as others have said here, if TODAY you want to talk about who played a tougher schedule, you have to look at the end of season rankings, not the rankings at the time two teams played. SEC Taskmaster

The facts are facts. Every team in the conference played q team from another conference who was a higher seeded team from their own conference. I guess your argument is even the lower rank and file teams of the southeastern conference have to play higher seeded teams from every other conference to even out the playinf field.
Keep arguing, after tonight it will be 6 in a row for the best conference in football.

Now we would like to believe that the titles these HCs have were earned legally. And I admit that if esp. Auburn earned their title Legally, then Richt should have been canned LONG LONG AGO! I speak specifically of the development of Nick Fairly. While being recruited out of HS, Fairly weighed all of 255. Not nearly big enough to play DT at ANY level beyond HS! Right now the Auburn roster lists him at 314. That means in 3 years the man gained nearly 60 lbs. Very unusual one must say! And I must say that if Fairly developed like that in a mere three years legally, then Richt’s weight training program deserves a greater indictment than it’s already getting (as in a “you’re fired” indictment). Again I think Richt is too clean cut! Would he allow a player to use an oxygen machine (a la Tim Tebow)? Would he allow a player to take the same stuff Fairly used to gain 60 lbs? (trust me Fairly used something beyond hard weight training: and MAYBE what he used is legal and/or undetectable).

My son aspires to be a D-1 lineman. When he get’s to college, I’m going to be leery if he gains more than 30 lbs. over the course of his college career. 60 lbs? Me and the coaching staff and a large number of medical professionals will have to sit down and have a long talk! After all I want my son to see well beyond his 40th birthday!

BTW what would the “too clean-cut for the SEC” Richt do if he found out the parent of one of his recruits/players allegedly took close to $200K from someone associated with Georgia? And if the same recruit/player has a B&E charge and was alleged of academic fraud? If Richt already has a team of thugs (as a lot of racist bloggers insist), what kept him from recruiting Newton? Newton would have fit right in! The Dawgs have a bunch of imperfect characters on their team, but no doubt Newton’s character was simply too imperfect for the “too clean-cut” Richt to seriously recruit out of junior college!
