Rich Rod is out. Will Michigan go after Les Miles again?

Congratulations to The Ohio State University for beating Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl and posting its first win over an SEC team in a bowl game. It has been duly noted that thanks to the creative enforcement of the NCAA,  Terrelle Pryor and the rest of the Ohio State Five made their contributions to the victory and we salute you for it. College football  looks forward to having each and every one of  you back for the 2011 season, when you will serve your five-game suspension. (Regular readers of this blog may insert their well wishes here.)

Wait a minute Tony, you SEC shill. Isn’t Auburn’s Cameron Newton playing in the national championship game Monday night because of  the same inexplicable NCAA enforcement process?

Nope. I’ll explain on Thusday but today I want to talk about something fun.

And oh my goodness, this has a chance to be fun.

Michigan finally announced Wednesday morning that coach Rich Rodriguez has been fired.

There is no doubt that Michigan’s No. 1 choice is Stanford’ Jim Harbaugh but it sounds like he is not interested in returning to his alma mater

So if Harbaugh stays at Stanford or goes to the NFL, does Michigan take another run at at LSU’s Les Miles?

Miles was an offensive guard for Bo Schembechler from 1973-75. Randy Rosetta of the Baton Rouge Morning Advocate reports that Miles played one of those seasons with Brandon, who was a backup quarterback for Michigan and went on to make a fortune in the pizza business.

It’s pretty clear that a lot of the lettermen and alumni want a “Michigan man” back in charge of the program.

Remember that on Championship Saturday, 2007, ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit reportered that Miles was headed back to Michigan. Just hours before the SEC Championship game in Atlanta LSU called a press conference and Miles angrily denied the report and said he was staying put. Miles  became a member of the YouTube Hall of Fame that day when he told us to “Have A Great Day.” Then his LSU team went on to win the SEC championship and the National Championship.

Miles was bumped up to a salary of $3.751 million (one thousand more than Nick Saban) the following year) and he stayed at LSU.

But since the national championship in 2007 Miles has caught more than his fair share of grief. After some of the time management gaffes of 2009 and the continuing struggles on offense, a lot of LSU people wanted this guy gone. For about 90 seconds, when it appeared LSU had lost to Tennessee back in October, it appeared Miles was done at LSU.

Miles just pulls one escape after another and this season he beat Alabama, won 10 games, and has the Tigers in Friday’s Cotton Bowl against Texas A&M.

So if Michigan offers, would he be tempted to go this time?

A word of advice for the Michigan athletics director. If you really want the LSU coach you really only have to say two things to him:’

1) We would like the priviledge of  paying you $5 million per year to coach our football team.

2) Michigan needs you.  Bo would want you to come home and get us back to the Rose Bowl.

I think that would do it. Les Miles might just decide it is time to move on from the weekly insanity that is the SEC. And even if he stays in Baton Rouge, the process would be a really entertaining thing to watch.

If you were Les Miles and your alma called, would you go?

3 of the SEC’s bowl losses have been by 5 or fewer points. Even SC only lost by 9. Might not be getting all the wins but at least they are not embarrassing their fans.

@Good Grief – who is your team? Surely, you didn’t attend every school in the conference just as SEC Elite did? Don’t hide behind the so-called strength of a conference, step up young man.

Karl –

UF – 1-0
UGA – 1-0
SC – 2-0
UT – 1-0
Bama – 3-0
Auburn – 1-0
LSU – 1-1-1

The only two SEC teams that have played them with a losing record are Vandy and UK. Now sit down and shut up.

Ohio State was lucky that Joe Adams wasn’t in form. Dropped passes kept Ohio State in the game, and just plain luck. Its part of the game but I doubt Ohio State would win if they replayed. It was a great victory to defeat a fine Arkansas team, but it was luck.

As I have said after the LSU-Tennessee Game: “I would rather be lucky”.

I still have nightmares about the 1989? LSU Ohio State game when Chris Spielman was so magnificent.

Good Victory, but Ohio State don’t want nothing to do with anymore Arkansas, it was all they could handle.

Ohio St tried every way one could imagine to give that game away in the Sugar Bowl. Arkansas was tempted but declined it. It was a bad game in the 1st half and turned into a nail biter in the 2nd half. All in all a damn good game. Hats off to OSU for the win and getting the monkey on their back a bitch slap and kudos to the Hogs for keeping it respectable

Here are some links on the numbers. The SEC and ACC contracts both include all sports. Neither one is centric on one sport although i’m sure football contributed heavily for the SEC and basketball contributed heavily for the ACC.

Why in the world would Les Miles want to leave sunny Louisiana, with the best food in the world, for snowy cold loser Michigan? LSU won 99 games in the 2000’s-only Fla won more in the SEC-100. That’s right- only one more game. How many did Michigan win in the 2000’s? If Miles wins this bowl friday he will have won 11 games at LSU, four out of his six seasons there. Have gone 5 and 1 in Bowl games. And thats after losing his starting QB, Perilloux-3 years ago-and playing in the SEC West. And the argument he won the BCS Title with Sabans recruit’s is ludicrous-he won in his 3rd season. You’d have to say the same for Saban, Meyers, Tressel, Stoops, etc.
And Miles has 2 clock snafu’s in 78 games and that is what those not familiar with the program remember most-thats cuz the media loves to talk it up.
If you dont think Miles is an elite coach, the proof is in the numbers:
61-17 = The Hat’s Overall Record at LSU
33-15 = The Hat’s SEC regular season record
21-9 = The Hat’s record against the SEC West

It doesn’t make any sense for Miles to downgrade in both terms of the program and conference unless he wanted the job security of not being expected to compete for a national title every year which he could get at Michigan. I don’t think loyalty to his alma mater would compel him to take a step backwards in his chosen profession.

Just to comment on the whole “SEC pride” subject, I think what most people are missing (or simply avoiding if they play in a crappy conference) is that college sports are far more intimate and personal than pro sports. NFL teams are made up of guys from all over the country. Heck, in most pro sports from all over the world. In college most teams are made up from guys from your home state, or at least your home region. There is a since of hometown proud in that regard. Anyway, just my two cents.

@Good Grief – One game is not a statistically relevant universe. What is your school affiliation? Afraid to say? Ohio State has seven national football championships (Wikipedia) including the 2002 title. In fact, in 2002 I had to hear Georgia fans whining about how they would have given undefeated Miami a “better game” in the Fiesta Bowl – meanwhile all the Buckeyes did was defeat Miami in double overtime. Better game indeed.

ARdawg,

They cheated by not being responsible as an institute of higher learning and as a program by not sitting their suspended players. This season had two other guys that were caught doing the exact same thing, but at an even far smaller level, and were dealt with immediately. Just because the Sugar Bowl executives didn’t want to lose any money and worked with the NCAA to enforce their never before used loophole bylaw, doesn’t mean Tressell had to be just as irresponsible and classless. It was embarrassing as a football fan to see that last night. Get your head out of your own a$$

Why would a coach leave an SEC school for a Big 10 school?

There are many reasons Les Miles might leave:

1. More money.
2. More history and tradition.
3. Returning to alma mater with a chance to be a hero.
4. Getting sick of under appreciation from LSU fans.
5. Coaching in the Big House.

Michigan has been pretty bad lately but it’s still one of the top jobs in college football.

Alabama – 35, Ohio State – 6 (1978 Sugar Bowl)
Auburn – 31, Ohio State – 14 (1990 HallofFame Bowl)
LSU – 38, Ohio State – 24 (2008 BCS Nat’l Champ)
Georgia – 21, Ohio State – 14 (1993 Citrus Bowl)
