Charlie Weis to Florida. How’s that gonna work?

While we are waiting on Stanford’s Jim Harbaugh to exercise one of his many options and to see who is going to show for Ohio State tonight against Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl, it seems like a good time to catch up on the Coaching Carousel:

1. Charlie Weis to Florida. How is that gonna work? Weis knows offense and he knows how to make average quarterbacks good and good quarterbacks great. He’s got the rings to prove it. But I have two questions about Will Muschamp’s decision to bring the former Notre Dame head coach to Gainesville as offensive coordinator:

Can Weis work for a 39-year-old head coach whose personality is every bit as strong as his? Weis will be in charge of the offense but the head coach still makes the decision what to do on third down in a tight ball game. Weis has great confidence in his ability and I happen to think that’s a good thing. But Will Muschamp is the boss. Of course they discussed this. But discussing it in theory and doing it in the heat of battle are two different things.

Can Weis teach his system in 20 hours a week? He did it with Brady Quinn (good results) and Jimmy Clausen (mixed results) at Notre Dame. Can he do it with John Brantley or with any of the quarterbacks at Florida? The learning curve is steep and the time to teach is limited.

2. Maryland hired Randy Edsall. Huh? Don’t get me wrong. I really like Randy Edsall, the former Georgia Tech assistant coach who took Connecticut to the Fiesta Bowl. But the stated reason for firing Ralph Friedgen, the ACC Coach of the Year, was that attendance was down and that something needed to be done to get fannies back in the seats at Byrd Stadium. When Friedgen was forced out it was widely assumed that AD Kevin Anderson was going to tap Mike Leach, the former Texas Tech coach, to bring his wide open offense to College Park. That move made sense if the goal was to totally remake the image of the program. In Edsall Maryland has a very good coach but he’s a 52-year-old version of Friedgen, who was booted at age 63. The move makes no sense, unless…..

3. Mike Leach is untouchable as a head coach right now: The only thing that makes sense is that Maryland decided it could not touch Leach as a head coach right now. Leach had the infamous dust up with ESPN analyst Craig James over the treatment of his son, a player at Texas Tech. Leach still has lawsuits pending against Texas Tech and ESPN over his dismissal as head coach. Maryland is an Under Armour school and that company’s CEO, Kevin Plank, is a graduate and sits on the school’s Board of Directors. He is a Mike Leach guy. But I guess you can’t hire a coach who is suing his former school AND the biggest rights holder in all of college football. That’s just not good business.

4.  Michigan can’t keep Rich Rod, can they? They might if Jim Harbaugh is not available. Michigan athletics director Dave Brandon said he would not evaluate head football coach Rich Rodriguez until after the Gator Bowl game with Mississippi State on New Year’s Day.

That score, in case you missed it: Mississippi State 52, Michigan 14.

I’ve had a number of people tell me that this decision will be based on Jim Harbaugh’s availability. If he’s available and wants the job, it will be his. But Harbaugh will have several NFL options (49ers, Broncos, Panthers) and he could always come back to Stanford which is a pretty decent place to work. If Andrew Luck was coming back for his senior season, it might be tempting. But Harbaugh knows that he’ll never have more leverage in his career than he has right now. I will say this: Harbaugh going head to head with Jim Tressel of Ohio State on an annual basis would be fun to watch.

5. Just one man’s opinion. But if I was Dabo Swinney I would hire Ralph Friedgen as offensive coordinator. This idea came from my partner, Wes Durham. Swinney is catching some heat after a 6-7 season and let his offensive coordinator, Billy Napier, go. He needs a star to run that side of the ball so that he can be the head coach. He needs a veteran like Friedgen, who is one of the most brilliant offensive minds of our generation. I don’t know if Ralph would want to be a coordinator again after a decade as a head coach. But the gig would put him closer to his summer home at Lake Oconee in Greene County. Friedgen would essentially play the same role at Clemson that Weis will play at Florida. You can give him that side of the ball and never worry about it. And Friedgen could do some very good things with Tahj Boyd.

Beast from the East

I disagree, I think Muschamp will give Charlie FREE rain to run the offense. I believe Muschamp is very comfortable in his skin and all his hires are older than he is. He will run the program and have much more input on the defensive side of the ball—-that’s why you hire a great coordinator—–give him the ball and let him go.

UGA definitely needs some revamping on offense. It took Branden Smith coming to UGA for Bobo to even think about running an end-around (or the “Wild Dawg”-whatever). The only team I can think of that ran a true pro-style offense that has won a NC in recent years was Alabama last year, but it helps that Alabama’s strength and conditioning program is far and away better than UGA’s. Florida, LSU, Texas (with Vince Young running zone reads), even USC had some form of spread or West Coast offense when they won their NC’s. Ohio State’s been trumped twice in the NC because they couldn’t hang offensively with UF or LSU (and lest we forget how badly Oklahoma got beat in the NC by USC when they played).

I’m not saying UGA should become a triple option or spread offense by any means. But I am saying that Bobo needs to start being a bit more ingenius with what he runs as college football transforms into a more spread-style scheme.

@ Huh?

You want to put lip stick on his 4 Super Bowl ring pal? Also, if you knew anything, Charlie’s offense was fine at ND (2 QB’s to the NFL) but he had no defense. Know your facts before you run your mouth.

Sorry to say, but Georgia is the school only in the US that would have Bobo as the OC——————–I feel your pain.

Tony…..Charlie Weiss (great play caller and QB coach) or Mike Bobo as your OC? Duh?

Also….fine with me if Charlie makes every decision related to the offense…including going for it on 3rd down or whatever. I am sure Muschamp will trust his decision making and the play calling he will make….not sure you’d do the same with Mikey Bobo….or even Mark Richt for that matter.

Also….who do you think would coach up Aaron Murray more…..Mike Bobo or Charlie Weis?

….and Weis isn’t the only outstanding coach Muschamp is bringing to Gainesville….all college and NFL connected…..Mr. Recruit.

End of story…..end of discussion… Tony….go write a story that has relevance to anything.

Brandon Smith is another example of an outstanding recruit to Georgia that has NOT been coached up much. I think, if the kid had come to Florida, he would be checking on his NFL status right now.

Grantham kicked Mischamp”s tail in stats. Who cares! Grantham is a fatass loser. Stats are crap. Wins and losses are all that count. UGA fans are tools and the players are illiterate thugs.

Do you have to weigh 400 pounds to be an offensive coordinator?

I agree with Tampa Gator on the Brandon Smith thing. He has great speed and we have failed miserably to use it like we should. Of course, that is certainly consistent with our total lack of imagination on offense. We don’t even run a “trick play” in a bowl game! Pitiful!

It would make a lot of since if Mark Richt hired Ralph Friedgen to be UGA’s OC. With all the talent on offense and no one to coach it properly, that would be the ideal situation for CMR, but he is to stupid to pull the trigger on BooBoo and upgrade the program to a higher level. He has not shown me that he is competent to better this program and his coaching moves are like the recruiting, always late to offer.

Maybe that is Bobo’s problem, he doesn’t weigh 400 lbs.
Time for him to start hitting the buffett a couple of times a day!

UGA has a very boring offense and very slow to develop. It gives opposing DC plenty of time to settle into a gameplan since we have an idiot trying to learn how to call plays. I’m sorry to say but, as long as Richt is the head coach UGA will not improve next year because he can’t make the right coaching decisions or he won’t make the right decisions. I fought Mcgarity for keeping him or not forcing him to fire Boobooo. Say what you will, if Damon Evans hadn’t screwed up Richt would be outta here and we would have been on our way to improving instead of waiting for the same screw ups next season.

I agree with K – Town Dawg. Bobo is way too light to be an offensive coordinator. I don’t think he even weighs 200 pounds. How can you expect him to call good plays at that weight?

Hey Tony, tell me how you play guys that are going to be suspended next year. If the coaches didn’t tell the players of the rules then the coaches shouldn’t be coaching, but to allow them to play and coach tonight without punishment is flat wrong. I guess every team will ge a mulligan now.

Fan of the game ..agree the players should not be rewarded tonight and then miss first 4 games next year. Its a joke but money talks and rules suck when you Ohio.

UF is alot better now than they were last week..I worry we (uga) under Richt is in trouble, big time.

I realize many people do not like Charlie Weis. However I am so tired of the “Fat” jokes. That has 0 to do with his ability to do the job at Florida. Charlie did not do well at ND but did a great job at Kansas City this year. None of this has anything to do with his weight. This is just as much a bigotry as race, religion, sexual orientation etc. Please look at the man at work and not at his size.

Let’s see….UF + Muschamp + Weis = SEC Championships.
UGA + Richt + Bobo = SOS.

We’re stuck with Bobo and Muschamp goes out and hires Weis.Anyone out there think Bobo can out game plan Weis? Let the Florida beatings continue for another decade or two.

How’s that gonna work with Weis going to Florida, Tony? Well, if they keep the head coaching CEO dufus Markt Wrecked and all his Bozos it is going to result in bigger and bigger smackdowns in Jacksonville every year until the idiots in charge at UGA hire on some coaches who can outcoach the competition.

Ga’s defense will be a lot better in 2011 and will hold florida to 20 points or less. Ga wins that game by 10+—bet the house.

Florida is the least of our worries.

Who will be arrested ?

Next, I mean.

Will we beat South Carolina ?

Do we play Central Florida ?

Will we have anyone on the team, not suspended for Boise State ?

Who will flunk out next semester ?

Who will sell what to whom next ?

What lie will Mark Richt say next, after his I am the 4th best coach in America yesterday when in fact he is the # 23 team in America over the entire last 5 years in won//lost.

Will we break the all-time UGA record for Most Losses Ever in a Season ?

Who is our Fullback ?

Who is our Tailback ?

Who are our OL ?

Who are our Secondary going to be ?

Who is going to call the plays on Offense ?

When will Rodney Garner be fired ?

When will we get an Indoor Practice Facility ?

Why did we wait until getting to Memphis to even start implementing the game plan ?

What did we do the rest of the last month ?

What will Ben Dukes and Buck Belue say next on their blogs they BOTH are where only their opinion is heard (& add in Senator Bluto to that one too.) ?

If you cannot stand to hear what someone else who cares at least as much as you do about this program, has to say – don’t have a public blog.

You would think Mr.Richt would of made a move to upgrade his offense after the Weis hire especially with all the negative talks going around the state about his OC(Bobo). The Man is pitiful! Todd Grantham would not put up with this crap. Todd wants to beat the Gators more than anyone. Heck, that’s one reason why he wanted to coach at uga.

I can’t believe the fans aren’t lobbying for Todd Grantham to replace Mr.Richt. He’s smarter, he demand respect from his players, he shows plenty emotions, he’s intense, unlike Mr.Richt he will play his best players which means no more favortism and more importantly he love winning.

Open your eyes people. The answer to solving the dawgs problems is in your backyard.

Todd Grantham!
