Charlie Weis to Florida. How’s that gonna work?

While we are waiting on Stanford’s Jim Harbaugh to exercise one of his many options and to see who is going to show for Ohio State tonight against Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl, it seems like a good time to catch up on the Coaching Carousel:

1. Charlie Weis to Florida. How is that gonna work? Weis knows offense and he knows how to make average quarterbacks good and good quarterbacks great. He’s got the rings to prove it. But I have two questions about Will Muschamp’s decision to bring the former Notre Dame head coach to Gainesville as offensive coordinator:

Can Weis work for a 39-year-old head coach whose personality is every bit as strong as his? Weis will be in charge of the offense but the head coach still makes the decision what to do on third down in a tight ball game. Weis has great confidence in his ability and I happen to think that’s a good thing. But Will Muschamp is the boss. Of course they discussed this. But discussing it in theory and doing it in the heat of battle are two different things.

Can Weis teach his system in 20 hours a week? He did it with Brady Quinn (good results) and Jimmy Clausen (mixed results) at Notre Dame. Can he do it with John Brantley or with any of the quarterbacks at Florida? The learning curve is steep and the time to teach is limited.

2. Maryland hired Randy Edsall. Huh? Don’t get me wrong. I really like Randy Edsall, the former Georgia Tech assistant coach who took Connecticut to the Fiesta Bowl. But the stated reason for firing Ralph Friedgen, the ACC Coach of the Year, was that attendance was down and that something needed to be done to get fannies back in the seats at Byrd Stadium. When Friedgen was forced out it was widely assumed that AD Kevin Anderson was going to tap Mike Leach, the former Texas Tech coach, to bring his wide open offense to College Park. That move made sense if the goal was to totally remake the image of the program. In Edsall Maryland has a very good coach but he’s a 52-year-old version of Friedgen, who was booted at age 63. The move makes no sense, unless…..

3. Mike Leach is untouchable as a head coach right now: The only thing that makes sense is that Maryland decided it could not touch Leach as a head coach right now. Leach had the infamous dust up with ESPN analyst Craig James over the treatment of his son, a player at Texas Tech. Leach still has lawsuits pending against Texas Tech and ESPN over his dismissal as head coach. Maryland is an Under Armour school and that company’s CEO, Kevin Plank, is a graduate and sits on the school’s Board of Directors. He is a Mike Leach guy. But I guess you can’t hire a coach who is suing his former school AND the biggest rights holder in all of college football. That’s just not good business.

4.  Michigan can’t keep Rich Rod, can they? They might if Jim Harbaugh is not available. Michigan athletics director Dave Brandon said he would not evaluate head football coach Rich Rodriguez until after the Gator Bowl game with Mississippi State on New Year’s Day.

That score, in case you missed it: Mississippi State 52, Michigan 14.

I’ve had a number of people tell me that this decision will be based on Jim Harbaugh’s availability. If he’s available and wants the job, it will be his. But Harbaugh will have several NFL options (49ers, Broncos, Panthers) and he could always come back to Stanford which is a pretty decent place to work. If Andrew Luck was coming back for his senior season, it might be tempting. But Harbaugh knows that he’ll never have more leverage in his career than he has right now. I will say this: Harbaugh going head to head with Jim Tressel of Ohio State on an annual basis would be fun to watch.

5. Just one man’s opinion. But if I was Dabo Swinney I would hire Ralph Friedgen as offensive coordinator. This idea came from my partner, Wes Durham. Swinney is catching some heat after a 6-7 season and let his offensive coordinator, Billy Napier, go. He needs a star to run that side of the ball so that he can be the head coach. He needs a veteran like Friedgen, who is one of the most brilliant offensive minds of our generation. I don’t know if Ralph would want to be a coordinator again after a decade as a head coach. But the gig would put him closer to his summer home at Lake Oconee in Greene County. Friedgen would essentially play the same role at Clemson that Weis will play at Florida. You can give him that side of the ball and never worry about it. And Friedgen could do some very good things with Tahj Boyd.

Where is all this Dawg talent everybody talks about. Besides Green and Murray, it doesn’t exist.

UF has done it right for the last 20 years, what makes you think they would mess up now with WM and CW? You can’t make that assumption from history.

I want CMR to get it done next year, but honestly, what is he going to have to get it done with. Same old, same old.

There are two way to get it done in today’s football environment. You can have far superior athletes (FL, ALA, AU, O) or you can be smart (Stanford). I think I am a new Stanford fan.

ESPN has too much power. They have ruined bowl season, they kept Terrelle Pryor and his lying teammates eligible for the Sugar Bowl and now they are keeping Mike Leach from getting a job.

This is scary Big Brother type stuff. Don’t forget that ESPN is owned by Disney (aka “the Evil Empire”).

don’t know about the rest of you, but I was really impressed with Stanford last night. That was a good VaTech team. Probably a better VaTech team than the one that played Bama straightup for 3.5 quarters in 2009.

Until last night, I thought AU would handle Oregon easily….now, not so sure.

don’t know about you, but thought the Stanford “D” could hang with anyone. Their blitz packages were something Saban and Smart would be proud of. Harbaugh hired away Vic Fanzio from the Ravens this year, and Stanford has improved dramatically on defense. Still can’t figure out how that defense let Oregon put 52 on ‘em.

3rdN8, Tyrod can’t pass a lick no matter what Jaws and Gruden. And color me unimpressed with a team 25th in total offense and 88th in total defense against the schedule they played. Stanford was 13th and 23rd, respectively, meaning that the game was as big a mismatch on paper as it was on the field. VT is no more than slightly above mediocre this year.

BAMA dude

I think so too 3rdN8. And if they somehow landed him and Crowell to go with Depriest, Williams, Clinton-Dix, and Hart then this may go down as the best recruiting class in any school’s history. You’re talking the best nation’s juco prospect, best RB, best HS DL, Best DB, a top 3 LB, and another top 5 RB. With at least 15 starters returning from this year’s team that would be unbelievable.

3rdN8

I agree on that recruiting class. A month ago I would have said that no one had a chance of catching Texas. Bama is looking more and more like that could happen.

Not very sure about Crowell. The Dee Hart commitment may have put the kabosh on that one.

But I’m a lot more concerned about the OL and DL. If we’re solid there, everything else will work out.

BAMA dude

January 4th, 2011
4:11 pm

Everything I’ve read suggests that the Hart signing has no bearing on Crowell. They are two completely different backs. Think Reggie Bush and LenDale White style-wise (not saying they’re that good.) And I forgot about big Cyrus- he’s a five star top-three rated LT who should be coming in as well. Even if Clowney ends up in Columbia, the DL rotation will consist of Williams, Dial, Murphy, Ivory, Chapman, and Square. That should be scary good, relentless four quarter terror for offensive lines in the SEC.

Weis to Florida is a great move. He’s clearly demonstrated that he’s one of the better offensive minds in football, both college and pro. Also, I don’t get people knocking his recruiting abilities. Scouts ranked his classes from 2006-2009 as 5th, 11th, 2nd, and 23rd overall.

Add in Florida’s inevitable ability to draw top players, plus Muschamp (et al) and there’s no reason to think that Florida won’t continue to have massive success on the field and for recruits.

Not very funny and WRONG. Weis had no problem scoring at ND and put two QB’s in the NFL. His problem was no defense. Also, no one has mentioned that Florida also hired Weis’s offensive line and running game coordinator, that’s a combination Bobo can only dream about. Matter of fact Bobo can only dream of being a coordinator any where except Georgia. Dawg fans, I feel your pain.

Is there any other Dawg out there wondering why, with all the SEC coaching changes going on, that Bobo is still our OC? (OK, stupid question) He should be our QB coach. Good guy, just not an OC. CMR has to see that everyone is passing him by. Florida just keeps reloading, even with coaching. The thing is, UGA could do the same thing if they get the heads out of their tails! There is no reason why we should not be competing with the UF’s & Bama’s every year, but we don’t.
Heck Ralph F. is available….. GO GET HIM!

I would like to see uga throw a lot of money at Josh mcdaniels to become oc. Move bobo back to qb coach. If you can get Kyle orten to throw for over 4000 yards, you gotta be really good. Brady loved playing for him, he has a great offensive mind. Ralph would be an ok choice but I would see if a million would get me Josh mcdaniels.

Mr. Football,

Here a question for you: how can Muschamp hire 8 of his 9 coaches in 2-3 days and it takes Richt
6-8 WEEKS to hire a DC only after 3 rejections————-Grantham is the 4th choice, a pity.

The answer may be, (1) Muschamp is better connected than Richt (2) and Florida and Muschamp are more coveted than Richt and Georgia—-just ax’in.

I think Weis is a great hire. He’s one of the best OC’s in the business. If he can’t follow direction from Muchamp, then he’ll be given his walking papers. Should be a major factor in recruiting, as well. Looks like Muschamp is putting together a very solid coaching staff. Hope he can steal a few recruits between now and NSD.

First thing Richt needs to do is quit making Ford truck commercials. Second, either go back to calling the offensive plays like he did the first 4 or 5 years he was at UGA. Bobo needs to GoGo. Hell, I could call offensive plays better than him (I’d at least be sure not to call a sprint draw on second and 23 and a screen pass on third and 23).

I’m a life-long UGA fan but to be honest, most of the players are coming here now just to get to the NFL. When Murray saw Stafford get drafted #1, of course he was going to choose UGA over Florida. Ohio State, USC, Alabama, and UGA are some of the few schools that still run the pro-style offense and not the gimmicky crap UF’s been running the past few years. Pro-style doesn’t work in college anymore unfortunately (look at when West Virginia was good, and who’s playing in the NC this year-Auburn and Oregon-two spread offenses). UGA will continue recruiting great as long as they continue to run the pro-style offense, but don’t expect them to win anything soon with Richt out of the offense and changes not being made at OC if he doesn’t want to be in the offense anymore.

Until then, we’ll just continue to be an NFL funnel for players who don’t truly want to play for us passionately and we’ll continue to fall behind in the SEC.

Huh?

January 4th, 2011
5:38 pm

Weis was a failure at ND. You can put lipstick on it — but it’s still a pig. He might be fine at Florida — or not. Time alone will tell. I still remember hearing last year about what a splash Brantley would make at Florida this year.

Huh?

January 4th, 2011
5:42 pm

@Carlton

The spread offense is not your problem at Georgia. Oregon and Auburn are playing for the NC because this has been an epic down year in all of FBS CFB. When was the last time the BCS Championship game featured two such weak defenses? When was the last time that Army and Air Force both won bowl games? By your logic, the triple option is the offensive future of CFB.
