Charlie Weis to Florida. How’s that gonna work?

While we are waiting on Stanford’s Jim Harbaugh to exercise one of his many options and to see who is going to show for Ohio State tonight against Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl, it seems like a good time to catch up on the Coaching Carousel:

1. Charlie Weis to Florida. How is that gonna work? Weis knows offense and he knows how to make average quarterbacks good and good quarterbacks great. He’s got the rings to prove it. But I have two questions about Will Muschamp’s decision to bring the former Notre Dame head coach to Gainesville as offensive coordinator:

Can Weis work for a 39-year-old head coach whose personality is every bit as strong as his? Weis will be in charge of the offense but the head coach still makes the decision what to do on third down in a tight ball game. Weis has great confidence in his ability and I happen to think that’s a good thing. But Will Muschamp is the boss. Of course they discussed this. But discussing it in theory and doing it in the heat of battle are two different things.

Can Weis teach his system in 20 hours a week? He did it with Brady Quinn (good results) and Jimmy Clausen (mixed results) at Notre Dame. Can he do it with John Brantley or with any of the quarterbacks at Florida? The learning curve is steep and the time to teach is limited.

2. Maryland hired Randy Edsall. Huh? Don’t get me wrong. I really like Randy Edsall, the former Georgia Tech assistant coach who took Connecticut to the Fiesta Bowl. But the stated reason for firing Ralph Friedgen, the ACC Coach of the Year, was that attendance was down and that something needed to be done to get fannies back in the seats at Byrd Stadium. When Friedgen was forced out it was widely assumed that AD Kevin Anderson was going to tap Mike Leach, the former Texas Tech coach, to bring his wide open offense to College Park. That move made sense if the goal was to totally remake the image of the program. In Edsall Maryland has a very good coach but he’s a 52-year-old version of Friedgen, who was booted at age 63. The move makes no sense, unless…..

3. Mike Leach is untouchable as a head coach right now: The only thing that makes sense is that Maryland decided it could not touch Leach as a head coach right now. Leach had the infamous dust up with ESPN analyst Craig James over the treatment of his son, a player at Texas Tech. Leach still has lawsuits pending against Texas Tech and ESPN over his dismissal as head coach. Maryland is an Under Armour school and that company’s CEO, Kevin Plank, is a graduate and sits on the school’s Board of Directors. He is a Mike Leach guy. But I guess you can’t hire a coach who is suing his former school AND the biggest rights holder in all of college football. That’s just not good business.

4.  Michigan can’t keep Rich Rod, can they? They might if Jim Harbaugh is not available. Michigan athletics director Dave Brandon said he would not evaluate head football coach Rich Rodriguez until after the Gator Bowl game with Mississippi State on New Year’s Day.

That score, in case you missed it: Mississippi State 52, Michigan 14.

I’ve had a number of people tell me that this decision will be based on Jim Harbaugh’s availability. If he’s available and wants the job, it will be his. But Harbaugh will have several NFL options (49ers, Broncos, Panthers) and he could always come back to Stanford which is a pretty decent place to work. If Andrew Luck was coming back for his senior season, it might be tempting. But Harbaugh knows that he’ll never have more leverage in his career than he has right now. I will say this: Harbaugh going head to head with Jim Tressel of Ohio State on an annual basis would be fun to watch.

5. Just one man’s opinion. But if I was Dabo Swinney I would hire Ralph Friedgen as offensive coordinator. This idea came from my partner, Wes Durham. Swinney is catching some heat after a 6-7 season and let his offensive coordinator, Billy Napier, go. He needs a star to run that side of the ball so that he can be the head coach. He needs a veteran like Friedgen, who is one of the most brilliant offensive minds of our generation. I don’t know if Ralph would want to be a coordinator again after a decade as a head coach. But the gig would put him closer to his summer home at Lake Oconee in Greene County. Friedgen would essentially play the same role at Clemson that Weis will play at Florida. You can give him that side of the ball and never worry about it. And Friedgen could do some very good things with Tahj Boyd.

Barnhart and Durham:  Among our guests today are Pat Dooley of the Gainesville Sun, who will update us the Florida Gators. Bruce Hooley hosts a daily radio show on 1460 The Fan in Columbus, Ohio. Why not bring Friedgen to UGA, and make Bobo the QB coach? UGA needs a “brilliant offensive mind”.

You know 2 things are certain about Charlie Weis at Florida….

1. The Dunkin Donuts will have to up their inventory.
2. The Golden Corral will have to up it’s Adult Buffet prices to compensate for it’s upcoming meatloaf and pot pie shortages.

That’s all.

Now that I am over my elation for being first . . .

1. The question is not how it is going to work, but why would Weis want this job.
2. Besides, it seems like a lateral move to me.
3. Maybe Leach is worse than we thought!
4. I think Michigan and RichRod belong together.
5. As a Tech grad, I don’t want to face a Fridge-offense every year.

Weis is going to be a huge success at UF. Either he stays there four years to see his son graduate and to take care of the foundation he heads, or he succeeds beyond imagination and is paid enough money to move back into a top job.

Weis had been set to become Texas OC and his son was going there. This means that the Gators plucked both the OC and the DC (not to mention future coach) in one hiring.

Friedgien to Clemson would be a decent hire as far as play calling.. not sure how that helps with recruiting.

Regarding Weis to my Gators. Its definitely eyebrow raising and I wondered how the two would work together as well… and well.. if Weis was capable of coaching up talen thats not already NFL prepared/experienced. Im taking a very wait and see approach to this situation. But… what does it say about Must-Chomp that he can attract such talent to coach under him.

Weiss will be great. His problem at ND was not scoring it was stopping other teams. The Gators started 4 true freshmen on defense saturday and now they have Muschamp’s brain to help also. Weiss will turn a poor QB like Brantley into someone who will be drafted. Dont forget Tom Brady was not picked until the 6th round and guess who his college QB coach was; Scott Loefler who has been Brantley’s coach. Loefler should be sued for coaching malpractice by Brantleys dad.

Muschamp had a bad year, Grantham kicked his tail in the stats.

Smart turns down one of his best friends? What does that say?

Now they get Senoir old man Weis who was a collosal failure at Notre Dame, can’t relate to 18 year olds.

SEC is won with offense. Richt’s an offensive genius.

If you’re a Georgia fan, you have to love the moves Florida made, they are weaker, no doubt, I’d say they’re looking at 7-5 next season.

As a Georgia fan, we are in BAD shape and there is no bright future ahead for us with Mark Richt at the helm. Look at all of these teams making adjustments to there football team’s coaching staff in an effort to improve their results. Folks, this is a $3,000,000 per year job.
Mark Richt has been a great coach for us, but we need to go in a NEW direction in Athens.
I would rather be 0-2 with a new coaching staff in place next fall than 0-2 with Mark Richt’s staff still in place…

1. Charlie Weis is an obnoxious tool. I don’t care about his supposed NFL connections and/or his ability to implement a “pro-style offense” at UF. He’s a jackass who was an unbelievably bad head coach at Notre Dame and who has alienated everyone around him at every stop he’s made. I don’t personally believe there is any way in hell he can subjugate his personality to Muschamp’s. Weis is always going to: (a) think he knows better; and (b) resent reporting to a 39-year-old “upstart.” That hire is just as bad for UF and Muschamp as is Meyer hanging around. Going to be a volatile mix of personalities.

2. Who cares about Maryland or Ralph Friedgen? I know you’re worried, Tony, that Ralph will move back to Georgia and start beating you in the Potato-Salad-Eating Contest at Reynolds Plantation every year like he did before, but you’re supposed to be an objective reporter and shouldn’t let things like that affect your opinion. Muschamp should hire Ralph Friedgen and Charlie Weis as co-offensive coordinators. Why? Just because I’d like to see those two fat sacks waddle on and off the field every game.

3. Mike Leach should have locked Craig James in that closet with his son. What is up with this post, Tony? Three subparts, three toolbags: Weis, Friedgen, and Craig James. Let’s see if we can keep the trend going with subpart 4. (As a long-suffering Ole Miss fan, I only wish Ole Miss would jettison Houston Nutt and hire Mike Leach. Who cares about Craig James’ son?)

4. Yep, Rich Rod. Another toolbag. After that embarrassment in the Gator Bowl, Michigan can’t keep that jackass – regardless of what Jim Harbaugh does. Jim Harbaugh could die of a heart attack over his McGriddle this morning and Michigan would still fire Rich Rod. “Rich Rod.” The name alone is deserving of termination. As was him playing that Josh Groban song and crying at a recent ceremony with his players. As was him saying “None” when asked what case he planned to make for him keeping his job. Dude, if you can’t even go to bat for yourself, get the hell out.

5. Aaarrrgghhhh! Friedgen again! Damn you Tony, you fat cracker! You’ve ruined my morning. How is subpart 5 consistent with subpart 1? How is Swinney hiring fat egotistical b*stard Friedgen any different that Muschamp hiring fat egotistical b*stard Weis? Explain yourself Tony? Have you been freebasing Log Cabin syrup again? What’s the deal?

Time will tell whether Weis works out. That said I can see why Gator fans are excited. This really makes Richt looks like he is not willing to make the changes necessary. What is going on in Athens is not working.

Yes Friedgen was ACC Coach of the Year. He was also 2-10 in 2009 and was in the last year of his contract. I can see why Maryland made a change. I think Edsall is an upgrade. He didn’t have much to work with at UConn and there was a lack of support there as evidenced by the poor turnout at the Fiesta Bowl.

Leach has baggage right now which is probably why he hasn’t been hired.

I hope Harbaugh takes the Michigan job as if he doesn’t they may go after Miles. LSU has a strong program right now and another great recruiting class coming in thus that concerns me.

Swinney needs to do something as he is on the hotseat and probably will be gone after 2011 if he doesn’t turn things around.

1) Weiss as HC at UF will work fine.
2) Edsall will be a good hire for MD provided he can recruit the Baltimore and DC areas.
3) Leach could be untouchable until the suit with TT is worked out. It reminds me a little of Pepper Rodgers’ situation. After he was fired by GT at the end of 1979 he sued for breach of contract including wanting the money for his TV show and all of the other perks. Although he was hired by Memphis of the USFL in 1985, Rodgers never coached another college football game.
4) Rich Rod is done at Michigan – only question is when does he go and who replaces him.
5) The Fridge would be a good hire for Dabo. Will it work out – see answer to question 1.

Weis is a great hire. As bad as things got at Florida this year with that miserable offense, it didn’t take long for changes to be made which should lead to immediate improvements. Poor ole Georgia will still be wallowing around at this time next year along with Michigan.

Friedgen would definitely be a good hire at Pitt . . . if if he was willing to go there. But if Beamer doesn’t find a place for him at VA Tech . . . or if he doesn’t end up as the OC at Clemson, I suspect he’ll just retire to Lake Oconee. Personally I’d rather have the Friedge as OC at Georgia than Bobo!

Have you noticed that TCU went into the bowl game and beat one of the hottest teams in the nation straight up? Do you realize how stupid it is that TCU is not given a chance to play for the title??

What if we had a 16 team playoff?? Just imagine these teams like TCU, Alabama, Stanford, Oregon, Auburn, etc. playing it down to two…instead of this STUPID, IDIOTIC, BS—-bcs that is a sham…a total sham.

Tony, the fact that you are a shill for this idiotic BS—–bcs shows what a total sellout you are.

Edsall has proven his worth while building UConn. I’m sure he’ll do well at Maryland.

Mike Leach is a pariah……whoever hires him will wish that they hadn’t. He’s wacky….and prove to get worse.

Rich Rod and Michigan was a bad pairing……the guy that made that decision should be fired….and then shot. He’s a dead man walking……just like Mark Richt….If not 2011, in 2012.
