Will the Gators send Urban Meyer out with a win?

I’ll write a lot more about this subject on Friday when I make my predictions, but I sure do miss New Year’s Day as the date that really matters in college football. Here are Five Burning Questions I have about Saturday’s games:

1. Will the Gators send Urban Meyer out with a win? The Outback Bowl between Florida and Penn State is strictly a mindset game. If Florida is excited about playing the game the Gators are going to win because they simply have more athletes. But if Florida comes out flat and uninspired it could get pretty ugly. These kids at Florida have been through a lot in the last 12 months. Last year when Urban Meyer retired and then unretired Florida came out on fire in the Sugar Bowl and just destroyed Cincinnati. It will be very interesting to see how Florida’s players respond to Meyer and his staff in this final game.

2. Will this be the last college game for Alabama running back Mark Ingram? Ingram won the Heisman Trophy in 2008 and his numbers were down for various reasons in 2009. Will Ingram, a native of Flint, Michigan, go out with a bang against his dad’s alma mater (Michigan State) in the Capital One Bowl? Alabama has a chance to close out the season with 10 wins but Michigan State (11-1) is the only team in the country to beat Wisconsin this season. This should be fun.

3. Will a loss to Mississippi State send Rich Rod on his way? Michigan athletics director Dave Brandon has said he won’t evaluate the status of head coach Rich Rodriguez until after Saturday’s Gator Bowl game with Mississippi State. It seems to me that if Brandon intended to keep Rich Rod he would have done it by now and told the staff to go recruit some defensive players  because right now Michigan doesn’t have any. Just keep your eye on this situation because if Michigan comes open, the coaching carousel will crank up big time again. Also keep an eye on Michigan alum Jim Harbaugh, the head coach at Stanford. His team plays Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl on Jan. 3. I personally think Harbaugh is going to the San Francisco 49ers.

4. Can TCU play with the REALLY big boys from Wisconsin? Before this season started I thought this had a chance to be Gary Patterson’s best team at TCU. He had a senior quarterback in Andy Dalton and another fast, athletic defense. The Horned Frogs are 12-0 and will get a chance to prove their worth on one of the biggest stages in all of college football when they play Wisconsin (11-1) in the Rose Bowl. Certainly, this is not the game that the Rose Bowl folks wanted (they wanted Stanford-Wisconsin) but the vagaries of the BCS system gave them TCU. Does TCU play with a chip on its shoulder? Will that matter?

5. Will Oklahoma-Connecticut be a blowout? The boys in Vegas–who drive big cars and live in big houses–certainly think so. They have Oklahoma as a 17-point favorite against the Big East champs. That’s a lot of points for a bowl game, especially when both teams have had a month off. UConn is a solid, well-coached team by Randy Edsall who has a very good player in running back Jordan Todman, the nation’s second-leading rusher with 1,574 yards. That number seems high to me but I’ll discuss this more in Friday’s predictions.

By the way, if you want to read a great college football piece, check out this story from my friend Keith Dunnavant on crimsonreplay.com. There is a historical connection between Alabama and Michigan State that goes back to the civil rights era in the 1960s:

Florida better win against an infrior PSU.
Ingram is gone, so is Julio and for good measure AJ.
Michigan will continue to be owned by the SEC, Harbaugh ain’t coming home yet.
Wisci wins.
Uconn covers.

Vols will have a big bounce back in 2011.

Rich Rod is gone win or lose.

I’ll pull for the other SEC teams tot he extent that my stomach will allow me to do so.

I want UGA to roll O’Leary and his Tech staff by about 30. I hope someone other than Aaron is inspired.

Happy New Year.

The real question is: Can Urban find an offense? If not I think Penn St wins.

Rich Rod just needs a D Coordinator-His offense can score enough points to win each game

There were a lot of things for the dawgs to celebrate this year. Let’s see…

1. A drunken, whoring athletic director.

2. Twelve players arrested.

3. A player suspended for violating NCAA rules.

4. Winning the Fulmer Cup for the most players arrested.

5. Winning the title of #1 party school (i.e., the most drunken student body in the USA).

6. A sleazy assistant coach who razzes opposing players, unethical coaching conduct in violation of NCAA rules.

7. A super sleazy head coach who thinks he’s a saint, but recruits thug wannabes, gangbangers, and illiterate morons.

8. A 6-6 record despite having a team full of 4- and 5-star recruits.

Really something to be proud of!

Or to make decent people throw up.

Think about the gang of thugs that UGA puts on the field. 92% of the players are academically provisionally accepted, with mark Richt and his cronies knowing full well that they will use up all their coaching and tutors and elligibility and then have their asses kicked out on the street and soon be pushing grocery carts around Atlanta looking for a warm place to sleep, unless they’re lucky enough to find work in custodial or sanitation services. What a pitiful way to run the State’s flagship university.

So, Florida should win merely because they have more “athletes”? Florida has looked lost all season, while PSU has good showed flashes of quality and developing young talent.

Also, nevermind Paterno’s top notch bowl record, including plenty of bowl wins over supposedly faster and more athletic SEC teams.

Quality analysis, Tony!

not so sure PSU is “infrior” to Florida. Bama played both this year, and I thought PSU was the tougher of the two.

Four Big 10 vs SEC matchups over the next six days. I’m predicting an even split.

All four games look like toss ups to me.

Bama should be odd-on favorite….they have a lot more athletes. But if I gambled, I’d take MSU and the points. I don’t think this Bama team is capable of playing a solid sixty minutes.

I’m hearing Rich Rod is gone regardless of the Wolverine’s bowl outcome. His buyout decreases from 5 mil to 3.5 mil on 1 January and there are simply too many Michigan alums and boosters that want him gone. RR was an outsider and doomed from day 1 in Ann’s Arbor.

I have
UNC over the Vols
UGA over UCF
USC over FSU
PSU over UF
Bama over MSU (but don’t think they cover)
Miss State over UM (but pretty much a toss up)
I had OSU over Arkansas, but since their prima donna QB has set out to destroy the program, I’m rethinking that one.
LSU over TA&M in a very close game

MURPHY : Interesting you have that feeling for USCe in the Dome. USCe Yardbirds do their best work outside, not in a coop where they’ve had miserable results as a football program. But, what do I know. I did have AF over GT though. Paulie just can’t win a bowl game at Tech. The numbers read, 0-3 by a combined score of 24-78. What a Ramblin’ Postseason Wreck..!

The Dawgs finish out the year losing to Central Florida. Another steller performance for Richt, his hairdresser, and his little choak dawg.

Next year a new gator coach start his tradition of beating the dawgs. Florida simply has more criminals than Georgia. Not that Georgia lacks the effort.

After a off year I win another national championship. Think I will visit Athens and let Richt sniff my ring.

as the season wears down, here’s my take on college football

It’s really starting to look and feel like a developmental league for the NFL…..that coupled with thousands of slick marketing types are changing the game….not for the better in my opinion.

Listening to the announcers on TV, a team’s potential is gauged by how many first round picks are on the team.

Personally, I get a lot more satisfaction as a fan watching a team overachieve like the Vols did this year, than watching a team full of NFL caliber talent like Alabama stumble all over themselves.

I hate it for Auburn fans (most of them are good poeple) that their best season ever is marred by a con-man like Cecil Newton, and his egocentric son. No matter what happens next wee, I think most people will say it was the best team money can buy.

Maybe next year will be better

Gator Mike

If the Gator coaching staff shows up against Penn St., the Gators will win. The coaches have been awfull all year because Urban has not been fully engaged with his normal intensity. This bowl game means nothing to me. What counts to me is how Muschamp reignites some fire in the players for next year. I wish UGA and all SEC teams only success in the bowls. I wonder what the DAWG Nation will say next season if a Muschamp led Gator Team beats the DAWGS in JAX. The build up for that game is going to be fun, and Mark Richt had better be concerned. If the Gators beat the Dawgs next season, Coach Richt will be in big trouble with the Dawg Fans. If the Dawgs win, the Gator Nation will be on fire. It will be fun to watch.
I expect the surprise team in the SEC next season to be the VOLS. Dooley is doing a great job in Knoxville. USCe has had their time in the limelight. UF, UGA and UGA will all be much improved next season.

Happy New Year and all the best to everyone.
