Five Burning Bowl questions (non-New Year’s Day edition)

This time around, we really have six bowl courses on our post-season menu:

**–Pre-Christmas: Very light appetizers (Beef O’Brady’s, Poinsettia, Hawaii, etc.)

**–Post-Christmas:  A decent house salad but the crutons are a little soggy (Little Caesars Pizza, Texas, Armed Forces).

**–Pre-New Year’s Day: Now we’re getting to the good stuff. Lobster bisque with just a touch of sherry. (Chick-fil-A, Liberty, Sun, Music City).

**–New Year’s Day: Still the main course for me. A fine filet from Ben Benson’s in New York. (Capital One, Outback, Gator, Rose, Fiesta).

**–Post New Year’s Day: An unexpected course of sherbet to clear the palate and extend the bowl season: Jan. 3 (Orange), Jan. 4 (Sugar), Jan. 6 (GoDaddy.com…I did not make that up), Jan. 7 (Cotton), Jan. 8 (BBVA Compass), Jan. 9 (Fight Hunger). We’ll have a taste but not consume it all because we’re  really waiting for…….

**–BCS Championship (No. 1 Auburn vs. No. 2 Oregon): The perfect dessert. A Bannanas Foster from Commander’s Palace in New Orleans.

In that spirit here are my five burning questions for the non-New Year’s Day bowls. Feel free to pose your own:

1. Does A.J. Green go out with  a bang? I’m never comfortable with absolutes but I do feel confident in saying that A.J. Green is the best wide receiver to ever play at Georgia. It’s hard not to wonder how Georgia’s season would have gone had Green been there from the beginning. Central Florida (coached by George O’Leary) is a good team but there is nobody like Green in Conference USA.  Send him long early and often and he’ll make a bunch of big plays in his final college game.

2. Does Florida State have an answer for South Carolina’s Marcus Lattimore? Florida State was third in the ACC in rushing defense (127.3 ypg) and  eighth in passing defense (221.2 ypg). But the key to Friday night’s Chick-fil-A Bowl is going to be Florida State’s ability to contain freshman running back Marcus Lattimore (99.8 ypg), the SEC’s No. 2 rusher behind Auburn’s Cameron Newton. If the Seminoles can hold Lattimore to under 90 yards they can win the game. But if Lattimore goes over 90 the Gamecocks will get a couple of big plays off the passing game and they will win.

3. What will be the total yards passing in the Music City Bowl? North Carolina’s T.J. Yates (from Marietta’s Pope High School) closes out a good career on Thursday when the Tar Heels play Tennessee in the Music City Bowl in Nashville. Yates, who started hot as a freshman and then struggled a couple of years (injuries were a factor), began the 2010 season by throwing for over 400 yards against LSU. He finished the season with 3,184 yards and 18 touchdowns. Tennessee freshman Tyler Bray became the man down the stretch of this season as Tennessee won its last four games to become bowl eligible. I say the total passing yards will be over 700.

4.  Will Ralph Friedgen go out a winner? Friedgen, the former Georgia Tech offensive coordinator and now the head coach at Maryland, his alma mater, is being forced out after a season in which he was named the ACC Coach of the Year. He is one of he most brilliant offensive minds of this generation. He also has a lot of pride. The Terps play East Carolina today in the Military Bowl in Washington, D.C. Look for redshirt freshman quarterback Danny O’Brien to have a huge day and for Friedgen to walk off that field a winner. Don’t be surprised if the big guy gets a little emotional in the post game. Under that rough exterior he’s a softie when it comes to his players.

5. Can something, ANYTHING, good happen for Clemson? No matter how you slice it this has been a disappointing season at Clemson (6-6). Clemson was really good on defense as the Tigers led the ACC and were ninth in the country in scoring defense (17.8 ppg). Led by an extraordinary player in DE Da’Quan Bowers, Clemson has allowed only eight touchdowns by opposing offenses in the past seven games. Yeah, Clemson did miss C.J. Spiller and Jacoby Ford (now in the NFL) but the Tigers should have been better. Clemson plays South Florida in the Meineke Car Care Bowl in Charlotte, just a short hop up I-85 from campus. The Tigers and coach Dabo Swinney need to win this one to make the quality of life in the offseason just a little better.

LOL What the hell was the first part of this blog? You need an editor to take a look at these, Tony, ’cause most would’ve taken one look at the opening of this and said, “Uhhh, I don’t think so, Tony. That’s not funny, cute or impressive, which is what it looks like you’re trying to be.”

The Dawgs will put an exclamation point on the very worst season in the history of UGA football on New Years Eve when they get embarassed by George O’Leary and Central Florida. Who would have ever thought that we would have sunk to such depths? O’Leary will make Mark Wrecked look like the imposter that he is.
Is it possible that Ralph Fridgen could be hired as the Dawgs’ offensive coordinator next season? Oh yeah, I forgot–he probably doesn’t fit into Richt’s “system.”

One of the biggest excuses for having this pitiful group of underacheivers at UGA play in this joke of a bowl was that the extra practice would be beneficiary to the 2011 team. Okay I’ll bite, so play the players and schemes that will be used in 2011. Forget sending Green deep, he won’t be there to help save Richt’s job in 2011. They should start players who will be contributing in 2011, with an emphasis on getting an OL that can open holes for a running back, if possible. If this turns out to be nothing but a showcase for A.J. Green’s NFL jump, then I will promptly turn the game off. I have heard many UGA people say this same thing. I hate to say it, but I really do not think Richt thinks that he has been running the program wrong, therefore I don’t see him changing the way that he will approach certain aspects that have led to the state of UGA’s decline. The large contributors to the Georgia Atheletic Program will be expecting a zero tolerance approach to disiplinary issues, and the fan base in general will put a lot of stock in the 2011 recruiting class. This will be McGarity’s first preseason with the Dawgs, and he and Richt will field very pointed questions about the direction of the program this spring.

That is it. You have done nothing for him and he doesn’t owe you anything. Like anyone in their right effing mind would do, including yourself, he will forgoe his senior year and enter the NFL draft. And YES, it is all about the money. This is America. Love it or leave it.

I loved it in the old days. When you had the Cotton, Rose, Sugar, and Orange Bowls on New Year’s Day. That was traditon and I am a traditionalist. You really didn’t care who won the NC. If you won you bowl game that was great. Not much attention was paid to the NC. Then came the Fiesta and Outback on New Years and then the Gator Bowl was on New years. I have no problem with the other Bowls, they are for the players and it should be something for them to look forward to. But like this year you have one or two bowl games each night because of TV. We are worried about kids missing class and we have bowl games until Jan. 10. Soon it will run until Feb. TV rules the roost. And how about Maryland going bowling just across the street. The kids deserve better. they were 8 and 4 and you 6 and 6 teams going to alot warmer bowls. Bowl system is a mess caused by TV and all this commercialism.

AJ will go out with a bang, I still believe the NCAA probably cost us 2 to 3 games in the first 4 games by keeping AJ off the field. Ohio State is finding out what it will be like to lose key players for games, (most of them will go pro and thumb their nose at the NCAA). By the way, what’s up with allowing these guys to play in the bowl game? I smell it has something to do with TV and Money. Aaron Murray will set a UGA record for most TD passes in a single season passing Stafford throwing several to AJ.

UGA will not lay an egg like the “trade school” did, we have far more pride than that and we do not deploy a high school offense. We should win by 2 to 3 TD’s.

The NCAA has already demonstrated how money and TV can play in rulings with their explination of the one day suspension of Newton at Auburn, what a joke that was. Recently read a long article on Auburn and Bobby Lauder a big Auburn booster, after reading this article documented with facts about players being paid to play in the past, I expect the other shoe will drop on Auburn and Newton down the road. There is a reason the FBI is still investigating. It is sad because Newton will be long gone (Reggie Bush) and Auburn and it’s players will pay the price. I will pull for Auburn against Oregon (because they are SEC only), but sadly I think this Championship will be tainted some day.

The NCAA is as corrupt as any organization there is. Pryor will not serve one day suspension. AJ got screwed whether you are a UGA fan or not. The Cam Newton ordeal may be the worst ever. Even worse than the SMU situation. If I am SMU, I am watching this situation closely. The Boosters run the show at Auburn, just like when they went to hire Tuberville’s replacement and the AD didn’t even know it.

Hey dawgfan you are right in that A.J. does not owe anyone in the Bulldog Nation anything, but Mark Richt does. Richt has hauled more money out of UGA than any coach, for any sport in UGA’s history. He does not seem to know how to handle the players, or get what he needs from them once they have signed with UGA. The football program as a whole has suffered embarrassment from all sides, from the academic issues to all of the arrests, and for that matter on the field for the last several seasons. I can remember a very large contributor making the comment that he had never been so embarrassed as when Alabama made Richt look like a fool with that stupid blackout business in 2008. Gimmicks are not supposed to be relied upon to win football games. These people believe that tough, hardnosed football is what is important. We have not seen nearly enough of the latter in Athens for several years now.

Get recruits with heart (like a David Pollock) and quit worrying about how many damn stars they have. Let Grantham be himself like in the first game of the season when he chewed Rambo out. Who Cares

December 29th, 2010
9:25 am

Who cares if Aj stays for another year. He played in 3 of the 6 games uga lost. UGA has many more problems than AJ. It starts with terrible coaches, lack of talent and size on both lines, and the most overated head coach in the country. Anyone with any knowledge of the UGA program knows that billy graham rode VanGorder’s coat tails for 5 years. VanGorder’s defenses saved RIcht’s ass 4 or 5 games per year, and this was when billy was calling the plays. Now that VanGorder isn’t around to bail out this clown and his favorite assistant BOOBOO, UGA is and will be a joke in the SEC. Richt and these pitiful coaches can’t recruit, this was on display in last year’s class, and it will raise it’s ugly head again in Feb. when this so called DREAM class is actually that, just a DREAM. Drew, Wright, Tuitt, will all commit to Auburn, and they will line up 4 (4 and 5 star stud d.l. from Ga.for the next 3 years to stuff UGA). But RIcht and the clown Garner will sit there and say you can’t sign them all, and we are proud of the guys we got. This has been going on for 3 years now, and Garner is getting his ass handed to him by Tracy Rocker at Auburn, who coaches the D.L. for Auburn. So not only do these recruits not want to play for UGA, they don’t want to be coached by Garner. Too bad A.J. can’t take Richt and this pathetic coaching staff with him next year, but UGA fans can only DREAM of the day when Richt and co. are gone.

in 1994 true freshman Peyton Manning led UT to a victory in the Gator Bowl over Virginia Tech (now an ACC team) 45-23, setting the stage for a super mid-to-late 1990’s run for the Vols including one national title and 2 SEC titles. If true freshman Tyler Bray leads UT to a romp over ACC team UNC tomorrow, the Vols are set up nicely for a similar run over the next 3-5 or so years.

UGA is a team thru the past few years usually has a couple of good players, while a good team usually has a bunch of impact players as BAMA did last year.

As a result UGA’s limited impact players usually get all play opportunity and thus pile up all kinds of good stats. As to how good they are, who knows? they definitely look good for NFL draft.

Tenn. has always beaten Vandy and Kentucky, as well as looked great in the month of Nov. when they play nobody to finish out the season. Tenn. doesn’t have the talent to compete for an SEC title now, nor will they have the talent for 3 or 4 years, that is if Dooley makes it that long. By the time your skinny little q.b. gains some muscle and some weight, he will be a sr. and he will leave with Dooley with 4 years of pre Jan.1 bowls. Tenn. will never dominate with Dooley, hell, they will never dominate like i did, that is until the ole ball coach arrived at fl. Fair enough Columbus Dawg. I sometimes wonder if Richt’s heart is still in it. I never bought in to that crap that he was Mr. Cool Calm Collected Nice Guy. You don’t win on the road in the SEC like he did early on without a serious competitive streak in you. It was like, tell Richt he can’t do something and then watch him do it. But he seems to have lost that edge for sure and its trickled down throughout the whole program. Oh well. At least we can still make the Techies cry, for whatever that’s worth. Not much obviously.

Ohio State and the pompous, under achieving Big Ten (soon yo be with 12 teams) are now in the category of Southern Cal. Their AD is really a jerk if he thinks the players did not know the rules.
Allowing those guys to play in the bowl shows the pompous attitude of the NCAA, Big Ten and OSU. It is probably only an NFL audition for Pyror and some of the others because they will most likely bolt to the NFL after this season.

Level 1 Competition:

Georgia will lose at LEAST 3 of these.

All 5 are better teams than 6-6 Georgia. Should be 5 losses.

Then you have:

Ralph Friedgen for OC at UGA? That’s makes WAYYYY too much sense to be realistically considered. Would he do it? Probably. Would it cost a lot of money? Who cares, we have it. Will CMR do it? Not on your life. I think this is one of those situations where Mr. McG needs to stop in and say…look Mark, I know you’re loyal to your assistants, but here it is. Hire Mr. Friedgen, make Bobo your QB coach and move on…or be prepared to yoke your future to Mr. Bobo as OC. That seat isn’t nearly as hot this year as it will be next year. Look for change “A” after the bowl, or expect change “B,” at the end of next season. Come the Auburn game, CMR and the Dawgs had better be able to win the East with a win over Auburn. Since AJ is going to be the first WR taken in the NFL draft in 2011 it’s pretty easy to say that there aren’t any receivers in Conference USA as good as him.
I’d guess Tony didn’t see a single Conference USA regular season game. Stone Mountain’s Dwayne Harris (ECU) is an excellent receiver who will play on Sundays – if AJ has a similar game as Harris against UCF (9 catches for 146 yards and 1 TD) UGA will win going away.

The Fridge will go out a winner in a high scoring game. ECU has one of the worst defenses I have ever seen. They make GT look like the 1985 Chicago Bears.

AJ Greene sells a jersey, and is forced to miss 1/3 of the 2010 season.

Bama players exploit the text book benefit….get a four game suspension, and vacate games played.

OSU players commit acts that are every bit as egregious, and will serve suspensions next season when some of them won’t even be playing college football.

Guess the NCAA is now dealing in futures.

GTBob

3rdN8, I agree. The Ohio State situation is showing how college football is really run. This is from an article on Fox Sports today:

“Sugar Bowl CEO Paul Hoolahan lobbied Ohio State University to make sure five of its football players — including star quarterback Terrelle Pryor — would not be suspended for the game against Arkansas, the Columbus Dispatch reported Wednesday.”

Between this rich guy, all of the Ohio State rich guys, and the BCS rich guys, the money flowed through the proper channels and things happened how they wanted. Afterall, if Pryor, Herron, and Posey were suspended then the game would basically be over before it even started. They aren’t going to let that happen regardless of what rules are broken.

“Guess the NCAA is now dealing in futures.”

I would only recommend that the NCAA not invest in their own future. They will never regain credibility after this year’s antics, nor should they.

It is past time to separate professional sports from collegiate athletics. Requirements to attend college prior to being drafted into the NFL or NBA were sold to the public as a means of protecting the status of the student/athlete. Nothing could be further from the truth. Such requirements only serve to establish collegiate athletics as the de facto farm system for these professional leagues. If you disagree, then please explain how the current “one and done” standard for the NBA enhances the academic careers of these young athletes?

If hood thugs represent the best candidates for the professional athletic leagues, then the leagues should be responsible for recruiting the hoods themselves. Let the kids drop out of high school to join the team if they are talented enough to play. An education means nothing to these kids anyway. As for actual student/athletes, they will be eternally grateful for an opportunity to obtain a quality education at no cost to them or their families simply for playing a game that they love. These scholarships should be awarded for the entire four year stint, and should only be revocable for academic failure. Would this reduce the talent level in collegiate sports? You bet your sweet ass it would, but there would be parity and the quality of the competition would not suffer noticeably. We could also, in the process, eliminate the need to maintain corrupt, under the table pay for play schemes and bogus academic standards for so-called “student/athletes”.

If folks like Cecil Newton then want to shop their kids around for the best deal, they can hire themselves an agent and do it legally. Kids who truly appreciate the opportunity to acquire a free college education due to their athletic talent will still have the chance to make it to the professional level after they graduate, knowing that they can fall back on their academic prowess should they be seriously injured in their first professional game or simply fail to earn a position to play at the professional level.

The NCAA, as it now exists, is nothing more than a smokescreen designed to obscure the death-grip that the NFL and the NBA hold over our collegiate athletics. It’s time to face the truth and return college sports to the true student/athletes.

That’s my $0.02 worth.

Let me get this straight – we have some posters stating that the NCAA is biased (presumably for the Big 10 and against the SEC) because it is letting 5 OSU athletes play in the bowl game. Isn’t this the same NCAA that reinstated Auburn’s Cam Newton as eligible in time for the SEC CG? It happened so fast that neither the public nor journalists knew that Newton had been declared ineligible in the first place.

what SEC biased? @2:23pm

The NCAA declared Cam Newton ineligible after his father admitted shopping him to MSU. This does not mean that AU should have any games stripped or that AU did anything wrong. However, it is mighty convenient that the NCAA restored Newton’s eligibility within 24 hours and in time for the SEC CG. Do you think that may have happened because of $$$?
As a comparison, it took weeks for the NCAA to decide whether the players at UNC were eligible (several had to sit out some games even though it was eventually determined that they were innocent) but the NCAA was able to rule on Newton with blinding speed.

Explain This

December 29th, 2010

“Put simply, had Cam Newton’s father or a third party actually received money or benefits for his recruitment, Cam Newton would have been declared ineligible regardless of his lack of knowledge,” the NCAA said.

SEC Fact Finder

December 29th, 2010
11:33 pm

There are some very good bowl games in the coming days. It was nice to see Ralph Freidgen go out a winner. But we all know that putting fannies in the seats, selling out the stadium, and raising money is just as important to the success of a coach as winning a many institutions. It looks like Gus Malzhan or Mike Leach will bring their offenses to the ACC and will force many schools in the league to learn how to cover multiple set wideouts.

Onto the the conversation by some on these pages. Looking ahead to 2011 and what it may bring.
Losing a quarterback who has carried your team to multiple wins is alot bigger whole to fill than a Wide Out who touches the ball maybe 10 times a game. Yeah Yeah he makes defenses alter their secondary coverage but the number of touches is just not the same as a 6′5″ quarterback who can run and throw it. The loss of Newton will be much tougher to fill than Green at Georgia. Auburn will not be feared in 2011, too many seniors lost, the two best players who should go pro if they are smart, and more than likely the ring master of the offense working as a head coach somewhere else will leave more than crater effect holes on the plains. As for UGA, the loss of Green will bring UGA back to the way they looked the first four games of the year unless some of those young pups who were redshirted this past year, one or two of the signees can contribute immediately, and some leadership steps up in the off season program. There should be some major differences in 2011.
UGA get S.C at home, Auburn at home, Miss.St. at home, has an improving Tenn. team on the road, a new look gator team in Jacksonville, Arkansas on the road, Boise St. who still has a boatload of talent coming back and with UGA one of the few games they really have to get up for and an off season to spend spring, summer and fall practice prepping for.

The SEC will have a new feel to it in 2011, especially in the east. Florida will ahve a new staff, a new look, a new attitude, does that mean more wins, who knows, we all know Florida has the talent, but changing the staff usually takes time for the players to adjust. USC will have their core playmakers back, but the schedule is a little harder with some road games that will make the ride to the SECCG a little harder to reach, Tennessee found their quarterback, and looked pretty decent down the stretch, but looming questions around the Kiffin era and investigations could mean scholarship losses and other issues, but Tennessee played more true freshmen in 2010 than any other school in the FBS, they are going to be a tougher team in Dooley’s second session in Knoxville. Kentucky will lose some key players but their downfall was their defense and they too played a ton of freshmen on defense and should provide decent competition in 2011. Vanderbilt uggrade with a new coach and always plays a couple of close SEC games.

The West is going to be tough and the only one slipping is going to be Auburn with the losses across the board on both sides of the ball. LSU will be better and will add some Defensive folks but losing Peterson is going to a big gap to fill. Mississippi St is getting better and better each year and their offense is going to be as good as anyones in the conference under Mullen in 2011, Ole Miss is going the JUCO route to fill major voids and will have their original starter returning prior to the Mazoli experiment in Snead under center, Alabama is just reloading and will lose two players on defense and some big play makers on offense, but has just as talented players ready to step in, Arkansas showed everyone their hand with the back up quarterback playing against Auburn when Mallet went down, he is going to be another gunslinger, the Razorbacks are lacking on defense and until they can prove they can line up each week and play consistent defense they will have a hard time winning the SEC West.

2011 is around the corner and National Signing day will follow the BCS title game some 20 day later. The signing day will give alot of teams hope, it will provide a window into the future directions of many programs and will once again bring in players that most of us will be hoping can turn some big plays in for our teams.

Good Bowling and Happy New Year!

Swimdawg68 I have read this so-called well documented article. Most of it is a bunch or baloney. And a great deal of it is a bunch of lies. Those who want to believe Auburn did something bad will be convinced by the article but those who do not want to believe will the fallacy of the article. There are 3 reasons Auburn people should not respond to people like you.
1. You cannot take away what Auburn did on the field no matter what you do. This includes beating your dogs.
2. Ignorance continues to show and an ignorant person is laughable.
3. Jealousy and envy are two very bad things to have and make one do and say stupid things.
Auburn won the right way……Period. Enough said.

“It’s hard not to wonder how Georgia’s season would have gone had Green been there from the beginning.”
*********************************************
Actually, Tony, we lost to Colorado with him playing most of the game, so . . .

Skitty Fritty, it’s hard for some us to stay positive about 2011 when we lose 6 games, and the head coach says, “no staff changes.”

That same staff who went 6-6 with up to 6 players who will be taken in the next NFL draft.

About $1 Million in coaching salaries per win. Well done, Richt and Co.

1. A. J. Green is the best WR ever to play in the SEC.
2. If Cam Newton goes to the NFL — what is his “buyout” with Auburn?

The Dawgs will put an exclamation point on the very worst season in the history of UGA football on New Years Eve when they get embarassed by George O’Leary and Central Florida.

And it will be quite enjoyable to see this gang of thugs return to Athens with their tails between their legs. Think about the football team UGA puts on the field. 92% of the players are academically provisionally accepted, with mark Richt knowing full well that they will use up all their coaching and tutors and elligibility and then have their asses kicked out on the street and soon be pushing grocery carts around Atlanta looking for a warm place to sleep, unless they’re lucky enough to get a menial job in custodial or sanitation services. What a pitiful way to run the State’s flagship university.

Boise State 77, Dawgturds 13.

Another season down the crapper with Saint Mark at the helm.

There were a lot of things for the dawgs to celebrate this year. Let’s see…

1. A drunken, whoring athletic director.

2. Twelve players arrested.

3. A player suspended for violating NCAA rules.

4. Winning the Fulmer Cup for the most players arrested.

5. Winning the title of #1 party school (i.e., the most drunken student body in the USA).

6. A sleazy assistant coach who razzes opposing players, unethical coaching conduct in violation of NCAA rules.

7. A super sleazy head coach who thinks he’s a saint, but recruits thug wannabes, gangbangers, and illiterate morons.

8. A 6-6 record despite having a team full of 4- and 5-star recruits.

Really something to be proud of!

Actually, it’s sickening, isn’t it?

@SEC Fact Finder

Boise loses more from their roster than Auburn. Georgia won’t be any better next year than they were this year, but they won’t need to be to beat BSU.

Crowell will win next year’s Heisman Trophy as a Freshman at Alabama and King will win most valuable running back at Georgia State the year after that.

Bystander,

I just think the impact players Auburn loses will more dramatically effect their 2011 team compared to the players at Boise St.

Happy New Years!
