Five Burning Bowl questions (non-New Year’s Day edition)

This time around, we really have six bowl courses on our post-season menu:

**–Pre-Christmas: Very light appetizers (Beef O’Brady’s, Poinsettia, Hawaii, etc.)

**–Post-Christmas:  A decent house salad but the crutons are a little soggy (Little Caesars Pizza, Texas, Armed Forces).

**–Pre-New Year’s Day: Now we’re getting to the good stuff. Lobster bisque with just a touch of sherry. (Chick-fil-A, Liberty, Sun, Music City).

**–New Year’s Day: Still the main course for me. A fine filet from Ben Benson’s in New York. (Capital One, Outback, Gator, Rose, Fiesta).

**–Post New Year’s Day: An unexpected course of sherbet to clear the palate and extend the bowl season: Jan. 3 (Orange), Jan. 4 (Sugar), Jan. 6 (GoDaddy.com…I did not make that up), Jan. 7 (Cotton), Jan. 8 (BBVA Compass), Jan. 9 (Fight Hunger). We’ll have a taste but not consume it all because we’re  really waiting for…….

**–BCS Championship (No. 1 Auburn vs. No. 2 Oregon): The perfect dessert. A Bannanas Foster from Commander’s Palace in New Orleans.

In that spirit here are my five burning questions for the non-New Year’s Day bowls. Feel free to pose your own:

1. Does A.J. Green go out with  a bang? I’m never comfortable with absolutes but I do feel confident in saying that A.J. Green is the best wide receiver to ever play at Georgia. It’s hard not to wonder how Georgia’s season would have gone had Green been there from the beginning. Central Florida (coached by George O’Leary) is a good team but there is nobody like Green in Conference USA.  Send him long early and often and he’ll make a bunch of big plays in his final college game.

2. Does Florida State have an answer for South Carolina’s Marcus Lattimore? Florida State was third in the ACC in rushing defense (127.3 ypg) and  eighth in passing defense (221.2 ypg). But the key to Friday night’s Chick-fil-A Bowl is going to be Florida State’s ability to contain freshman running back Marcus Lattimore (99.8 ypg), the SEC’s No. 2 rusher behind Auburn’s Cameron Newton. If the Seminoles can hold Lattimore to under 90 yards they can win the game. But if Lattimore goes over 90 the Gamecocks will get a couple of big plays off the passing game and they will win.

3. What will be the total yards passing in the Music City Bowl? North Carolina’s T.J. Yates (from Marietta’s Pope High School) closes out a good career on Thursday when the Tar Heels play Tennessee in the Music City Bowl in Nashville. Yates, who started hot as a freshman and then struggled a couple of years (injuries were a factor), began the 2010 season by throwing for over 400 yards against LSU. He finished the season with 3,184 yards and 18 touchdowns. Tennessee freshman Tyler Bray became the man down the stretch of this season as Tennessee won its last four games to become bowl eligible. I say the total passing yards will be over 700.

4.  Will Ralph Friedgen go out a winner? Friedgen, the former Georgia Tech offensive coordinator and now the head coach at Maryland, his alma mater, is being forced out after a season in which he was named the ACC Coach of the Year. He is one of he most brilliant offensive minds of this generation. He also has a lot of pride. The Terps play East Carolina today in the Military Bowl in Washington, D.C. Look for redshirt freshman quarterback Danny O’Brien to have a huge day and for Friedgen to walk off that field a winner. Don’t be surprised if the big guy gets a little emotional in the post game. Under that rough exterior he’s a softie when it comes to his players.

5. Can something, ANYTHING, good happen for Clemson? No matter how you slice it this has been a disappointing season at Clemson (6-6). Clemson was really good on defense as the Tigers led the ACC and were ninth in the country in scoring defense (17.8 ppg). Led by an extraordinary player in DE Da’Quan Bowers, Clemson has allowed only eight touchdowns by opposing offenses in the past seven games. Yeah, Clemson did miss C.J. Spiller and Jacoby Ford (now in the NFL) but the Tigers should have been better. Clemson plays South Florida in the Meineke Car Care Bowl in Charlotte, just a short hop up I-85 from campus. The Tigers and coach Dabo Swinney need to win this one to make the quality of life in the offseason just a little better.

Let me get this straight – we have some posters stating that the NCAA is biased (presumably for the Big 10 and against the SEC) because it is letting 5 OSU athletes play in the bowl game. Isn’t this the same NCAA that reinstated Auburn’s Cam Newton as eligible in time for the SEC CG? It happened so fast that neither the public nor journalists knew that Newton had been declared ineligible in the first place.
I do agree that the NCAA is biased – but more towards $$$ for the members than anything else

@ what SEC biased: Thank you Johnny Cochran.

I love how Auburn fans are suddenly lawyers when it comes to allegations.

This is what I hear when Auburn fans defend Cam Newton: “If da glove don’t fit, you must acquit.”

This quote is lifted directly from the article regarding OSU:

“According to NCAA policy, suspensions can be withheld for a championship or bowl game if it was reasonable at the time the student-athletes were not aware they were committing violations.”

Aside from the glaring grammatical errors, that pretty much says it all…

Coach O I would add the following- let the professional teams in the NBA and NFL pay for and field their own farm clubs for those players who want to turn pro early and have no interest in college. Let the colleges return to what once was called a game for student-athletes. Would the attendance and revenue drop significantly- you betcha. Would I mind? Not in the least.

@Tell the truth

It’s entirely up to us fans. So long as we shuck out our hard-earned money in response to the branding and marketing efforts of the vampires that have commandeered collegiate athletics, then we’ll get what we deserve — more of this BS.

Turn off the TV and go out in the yard to pitch a football around with your kids instead. Don’t buy the hats and jerseys from the over-priced fan outlets. This crap is all about the money and only we can close the spigot. I’m fed up. I can’t believe that I am alone in my opinion. I’ve always loved college football, but I don’t care so much for this new mini-NFL product.

what SEC biased? @2:23pm

The NCAA declared Cam Newton ineligible after his father admitted shopping him to MSU. This does not mean that AU should have any games stripped or that AU did anything wrong. However, it is mighty convenient that the NCAA restored Newton’s eligibility within 24 hours and in time for the SEC CG. Do you think that may have happened because of $$$?
As a comparison, it took weeks for the NCAA to decide whether the players at UNC were eligible (several had to sit out some games even though it was eventually determined that they were innocent) but the NCAA was able to rule on Newton with blinding speed.

Explain This

December 29th, 2010
4:56 pm

“Put simply, had Cam Newton’s father or a third party actually received money or benefits for his recruitment, Cam Newton would have been declared ineligible regardless of his lack of knowledge,” the NCAA said.

T. Edwards was a DGD but I think he dropped more balls each consecutive year. That said, I would trade half of our team this year for any one of the Edwards clan!

Robert was head and shoulders batter than any RB we have. Mediocre RB’s is all we’ll have until our offensive focus is on Running not passing. Having a single featured back would help. RB by committee sucks.

There are some very good bowl games in the coming days. It was nice to see Ralph Freidgen go out a winner. But we all know that putting fannies in the seats, selling out the stadium, and raising money is just as important to the success of a coach as winning a many institutions. It looks like Gus Malzhan or Mike Leach will bring their offenses to the ACC and will force many schools in the league to learn how to cover multiple set wideouts.

Onto the the conversation by some on these pages. Looking ahead to 2011 and what it may bring.
Losing a quarterback who has carried your team to multiple wins is alot bigger whole to fill than a Wide Out who touches the ball maybe 10 times a game. Yeah Yeah he makes defenses alter their secondary coverage but the number of touches is just not the same as a 6′5″ quarterback who can run and throw it. The loss of Newton will be much tougher to fill than Green at Georgia. Auburn will not be feared in 2011, too many seniors lost, the two best players who should go pro if they are smart, and more than likely the ring master of the offense working as a head coach somewhere else will leave more than crater effect holes on the plains. As for UGA, the loss of Green will bring UGA back to the way they looked the first four games of the year unless some of those young pups who were redshirted this past year, one or two of the signees can contribute immediately, and some leadership steps up in the off season program. There should be some major differences in 2011.
UGA get S.C at home, Auburn at home, Miss.St. at home, has an improving Tenn. team on the road, a new look gator team in Jacksonville, Arkansas on the road, Boise St. who still has a boatload of talent coming back and with UGA one of the few games they really have to get up for and an off season to spend spring, summer and fall practice prepping for.

The SEC will have a new feel to it in 2011, especially in the east. Florida will ahve a new staff, a new look, a new attitude, does that mean more wins, who knows, we all know Florida has the talent, but changing the staff usually takes time for the players to adjust. USC will have their core playmakers back, but the schedule is a little harder with some road games that will make the ride to the SECCG a little harder to reach, Tennessee found their quarterback, and looked pretty decent down the stretch, but looming questions around the Kiffin era and investigations could mean scholarship losses and other issues, but Tennessee played more true freshmen in 2010 than any other school in the FBS, they are going to be a tougher team in Dooley’s second session in Knoxville. Kentucky will lose some key players but their downfall was their defense and they too played a ton of freshmen on defense and should provide decent competition in 2011. Vanderbilt uggrade with a new coach and always plays a couple of close SEC games.

The West is going to be tough and the only one slipping is going to be Auburn with the losses across the board on both sides of the ball. LSU will be better and will add some Defensive folks but losing Peterson is going to a big gap to fill. Mississippi St is getting better and better each year and their offense is going to be as good as anyones in the conference under Mullen in 2011, Ole Miss is going the JUCO route to fill major voids and will have their original starter returning prior to the Mazoli experiment in Snead under center, Alabama is just reloading and will lose two players on defense and some big play makers on offense, but has just as talented players ready to step in, Arkansas showed everyone their hand with the back up quarterback playing against Auburn when Mallet went down, he is going to be another gunslinger, the Razorbacks are lacking on defense and until they can prove they can line up each week and play consistent defense they will have a hard time winning the SEC West.

2011 is around the corner and National Signing day will follow the BCS title game some 20 day later. The signing day will give alot of teams hope, it will provide a window into the future directions of many programs and will once again bring in players that most of us will be hoping can turn some big plays in for our teams.

Good Bowling and Happy New Year!

Swimdawg68 I have read this so-called well documented article. Most of it is a bunch or baloney. And a great deal of it is a bunch of lies. Those who want to believe Auburn did something bad will be convinced by the article but those who do not want to believe will the fallacy of the article. There are 3 reasons Auburn people should not respond to people like you.
1. You cannot take away what Auburn did on the field no matter what you do. This includes beating your dogs.
2. Ignorance continues to show and an ignorant person is laughable.
3. Jealousy and envy are two very bad things to have and make one do and say stupid things.
Auburn won the right way……Period. Enough said.

Actually, Tony, we lost to Colorado with him playing most of the game, so . . .

Skitty Fritty, it’s hard for some us to stay positive about 2011 when we lose 6 games, and the head coach says, “no staff changes.”

That same staff who went 6-6 with up to 6 players who will be taken in the next NFL draft.

The Dawgs will put an exclamation point on the very worst season in the history of UGA football on New Years Eve when they get embarassed by George O’Leary and Central Florida.

And it will be quite enjoyable to see this gang of thugs return to Athens with their tails between their legs. Think about the football team UGA puts on the field. 92% of the players are academically provisionally accepted, with mark Richt knowing full well that they will use up all their coaching and tutors and elligibility and then have their asses kicked out on the street and soon be pushing grocery carts around Atlanta looking for a warm place to sleep, unless they’re lucky enough to get a menial job in custodial or sanitation services. What a pitiful way to run the State’s flagship university.

There were a lot of things for the dawgs to celebrate this year. Let’s see…

1. A drunken, whoring athletic director.

2. Twelve players arrested.

3. A player suspended for violating NCAA rules.

4. Winning the Fulmer Cup for the most players arrested.

5. Winning the title of #1 party school (i.e., the most drunken student body in the USA).

6. A sleazy assistant coach who razzes opposing players, unethical coaching conduct in violation of NCAA rules.

7. A super sleazy head coach who thinks he’s a saint, but recruits thug wannabes, gangbangers, and illiterate morons.

8. A 6-6 record despite having a team full of 4- and 5-star recruits.

Really something to be proud of!
