Even if you’re a Gator hater, there is no joy in Meyer’s departure

It’s a tough business. I get that. And over the course of six seasons a head football coach in the SEC can rub a lot of people the wrong way, especially the people he beats.

But if you’re a Bulldog or a Volunteer for a Gamecock or a member of the Crimson Tide Nation, you really shouldn’t be celebrating today over the news that Urban Meyer is leaving as the head coach at Florida.

I’ve had my own issues Meyer.

He was flat wrong when he suspended linebacker Brandon Spikes for only one-half game after Spikes clearly tried to hurt Georgia’s Washaun Ealey (sticking his fingers in the facemask). Only after the public outcry did Spikes “suddenly” decide that his suspension should be for one game.

He was wrong when he dressed down a reporter in practice in front of cell phone cameras. If he had an issue with the reporter, then there is a right way–a professional way–to address the concern. He chose the wrong way. I don’t know if Meyer was trying to put on a show for his players but it was unprofessional behavior. You don’t use people as props because you want to win football games.

He was flat wrong when he allowed Chris Rainey to return to the team and I said so. There are certain lines in life that you do not cross and threats against women is one of those lines. The rationalizations about who Rainey was and his background, etc., may have all been true. But all that pales in comparison to a text message that said “Time to die, ——-.”

The more success Meyer and the Florida program had, the more withdrawn and insular it became. They became like rock stars who once basked in the attention that brought them fame and fortune but ultimately found it suffocating and just tried to block it all out.

But instead of managing the media  and managing the very high expectations,  which successful people do every day, Meyer chose to throw up walls and pull in the ranks and adopt this silly “us agains the world” mentality. Coaches do that because it’s easy and the players will easily buy into it. It’s much easier for a coach to tell a player “they are all out to get us” instead of “dealing with the media–good and bad–is part of growing up. If you want to play at the next level you need to learn how to deal with these people and be smart about it. We will teach you how to do that.” But that takes work and, in some coaches’ narrow view of the world, it has nothing to do with winning and losing and so it should simply be eliminated as a factor. It is short sighted but if you win enough games, being short sighted eventually becomes a virtue.

Having said all that, Meyer is/was a helluva coach and the record certainly proves that. He won two national championships in three seasons (2006, 2008) and was certainly good enough in 2009 to win a third but for Alabama. For five years at Florida his star burned as brightly as any I’ve ever seen. But on Wednesday he announced, in so many words, that he was burned out.

I know you love your school but most of you I hear from also love your conference and college football as a whole. And so there is no reason to celebrate when the sport burns out a talented coach. You would rather he stay so that when you finally beat him it is all the more sweet.

Florida will find another talented coach. Frankly, I’m going to be surprised if its not Dan Mullen. Whoever it is will be very successful. Steve Spurrier forever changed Florida’s football program in his 12 years (1990-2001) at the school. Before Spurrier arrived Florida had never won 10 games in a season and had never won an SEC championship. Spurrier raised the bar and so Florida will never go back for more than a year or two.

And for Urban Meyer? I predict that he will be out of coaching for only one year and will surface again. This year he got caught in the perfect storm of talent losses and coaching losses and the inability to summon up the fire in the belly that had burned white hot for five seasons. We were all guilty of thinking that Florida could just reload after four years of Tim Tebow. The Florida program took a dip as all programs do (see Texas). The Gators will be back sooner rather than later but Urban Meyer will no longer be their coach.

If you love the game, there is no reason to celebrate that.

And one last thing: If Urban Meyer goes to the Denver Broncos in the next two months, I take it all back.

Urban Myers is an opportuntist, He will retire again get his pubist to throw his name around later at big time schools as in Notre Dame, Texas, Alabama when Saban goes on the hunt again.
Big time successful college coaches are a commodity who spreads their wings for greater financial gains.. EX. Pete Carroll, Urban Myers, Nick Saban, Lane Tiffan, Steve Spurrier and Petrinoa(ARK).
Their are no more Beart Bryants, Shug Jordan, Bobby Dodd, Vince Dooley etc.

Miami had the 80’s, FSU the 90’s, and Miami & Florida split the past decade. The writing is on the wall (and scoreboard) that FSU has the early in-state lead for this decade, while UF and UM are searching for new coaches. Meyer is no fool.

It is not only easy to sling mud at him (because the media and fans have gone through the Brett Favre sagas and now view world through cynical eyes), but it is reasonable to question Meyer. It is fair to say if he does stays retired for a year or more then people should be happy for him and should believe the family reasoning. But if he does something else (comes back to Florida/ joins another program/ NFL in next few months) then he loses credibility.

Should media and fans even question a “family reason”? No, but this is the world we live in and Meyer didn’t help his cause last year when he used the same reasoning only to come back 24 hours later.

Meyer was no doubt an unbelievable coach, but as a person, he kind of sucked. I’ve never really liked him since he referred to himself in the third person – he’s completely narcissistic. They rabidly defended the coach at almost all costs as long as he was still their coach – and now they unseemly cast him aside or toss him in the trash bin as he decides he no longer will be at UF.

Forget Southern Cal, Alabama is NCAA’s most consistent cheater

— posted by mike bianchi on July, 21 2010 6:36 AM

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — If you were the NCAA, at which football program would you have the most investigators?

As I prepared to cover the annual Southeastern Conference Football Media Days, which begins today here in Birmingham, that was the question asked of me by one of bosses.

Even with Southern Cal still dealing with the massive fallout from the Reggie Bush mess and Florida currently embroiled in a potential agent scandal involving Maurkice Pouncey, Alabama still gets my vote as college football’s most consistently dirty program.

If I were king of the NCAA, I would not only saturate Alabama with investigators, I would set up a branch office in Tuscaloosa.
In Alabama, cheating is as much a part of the football lore as the houndstooth hat worn by Bear Bryant and that purty dress worn by Mike DuBose’s secretary.

Alabama has seen it all over the last 20 years. Shady loans. Athletes illicitly accepting cash payments from agents and boosters. Multiple probations. Postseason bans. Scholarship reductions. Lack of institutional control. You name it, the Crimson Tide has done it.

Welcome to Alabama, where the NCAA probations are nearly as prevalent as national championships. Actually, in the last decade, Alabama has recorded more NCAA probations (three) than it has national titles (one).

It should also be noted that the iconic Bear Bryant may not have ever been caught cheating himself, but he tutored some of college football’s biggest outlaws.. Charley Pell, Pat Dye, Danny Ford and Jackie Sherrill all were Bear disciples who went on to provide some of the most unique interpretations of the NCAA rulebook in the history of college football.

Roll Tide?

Alabama’s rallying cry should be, “We Lied!”

And maybe, too, Alabama should get rid of its elephant mascot and replace it with a pig.

What better animal to symbolize the dirtiest, stinkiest program in recent NCAA history.

I didn’t like Steve Spurrier for several years after he became HC at Florida. I thought he was an arrogant prick. But all I ever heard was the sound bites; “you can’t spell Citrus without UT” kind of stuff.

After moving to south Forida in the late nineties, I had the opportunity to listen to the entire context of what Spurrier was actually saying. I changed my mind about the guy. He’s just brutally honest, and answered questions accordingly. Whether the topic was another team or coach, or his own team, he just let it fly.

Guilty Verdict Sets Precedent in Wake of $150K in Improper Payments

By Mark Schlabach
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, February 3, 2005; Page D01

MEMPHIS, Feb. 2 — Mere hours after high school seniors across the country made formal commitments to the colleges where they will play football in the fall, Logan Young became the first booster to be convicted of a crime for providing improper inducements to a recruit.

In a case that drew the attention of the NCAA and colleges across the country, Young was found guilty of conspiracy to commit racketeering (by breaking state bribery laws), crossing state lines to commit racketeering and arranging bank withdrawals to cover up a crime after he paid a Memphis high school coach $150,000 to ensure that the coach’s star player would attend the University of Alabama in 2000.

Testimony in the trial from college coaches and former Trezevant High School coach Lynn Lang shed new light on what cynics suspect is business as usual in football recruiting. Lang testified that representatives of at least three other schools offered him cash, law school tuition for his wife or coaching jobs in exchange for helping them get the recruit, all-American defensive lineman Albert Means.

“There are no heroes in this case,” U.S. assistant district attorney Fred Godwin said. “Even the victims are flawed.”

Federal prosecutors said Young gave Lang $150,000 in cash payments during a 15-month period in 1999 and 2000. In return, Lang steered Means toward the Crimson Tide. The case has already resulted in Alabama’s football team being placed on five years’ probation by the NCAA, and Lang and one of his assistant coaches pleading guilty to racketeering conspiracy.

“Some things are self-evident, and one of those things is that a high school teacher can’t sell one of his children, and somebody like Logan Young can’t buy him for the sole purpose of football,” Godwin told the jury during his closing argument Tuesday. “It’s signing day, ladies and gentlemen, and you know who paid Lynn Lang.”

Is Urban Meyer Behind Newton Story?
by Jay Coulter on Nov 5, 2010 5:29 PM CDT in Football

Auburn Undercover.com senior editor Phillip Marshall is reporting this afternoon that Florida coach Urban Meyer is the person responsible for the Cam Newton pay-for-play story being leaked to the press over the past few days.

In the story, Marshall talks of a three-way phone conversation between Meyer, Miss State coach Dan Mullen and former Bulldog quarterback John Bond, who made news yesterday in a story for ESPN.com.

According to Marshall, Bond is quoted as saying that he and Mullen agreed that the Newton matter was closed after submitting all of their documentation to SEC Headquarters.

Meyer disagreed and told the two that he thought it needed to be reported to The New York Times and he was going to make the call. Pete Thamel, who wrote the Times piece is close friends with Meyer.

The story goes on to say that Bond agreed to be interviewed by ESPN.com only after it became apparent the story was going to break. Marshall writes that Bond “is distressed about the reaction, particularly the attacks on Newton’s character.”

Bond is quoted as saying, “(Meyer) is behind the whole thing.”

Straight off Wikipedia Clown Do your homework before you open that yap

Eight Auburn teams have been awarded some form of “National Champions” title, though Auburn officially claims only the one awarded in 1957 by the Associated Press. The NCAA’s website states that “the NCAA does not conduct a national championship in Division I-A football and is not involved in the selection process”, but goes on to state that “a number of polling organizations provide a final ranking of Division I-A football teams at the end of each season”. The NCAA website lists four Auburn squads that have been named National Champions by at least one organization.[14] The following is the complete list of Auburn teams ranked No. 1 and some of the organizations that recognized them as National Champion:[15]
Another possible national championship team for the Auburn Tigers is the 1932 football team that finished 9-0-1

The AP Poll did not begin selecting a champion until 1936 nor the AFCA Coaches Poll until 1950, so many national champion titles previous to those date were awarded retroactively. However during the 1910s, it is difficult to dispute the legitimacy of the Auburn titles. The undefeated 1913 and 1914 teams coached by Mike Donahue were some of the best defenses in Auburn history. In fact, the 1914 squad allowed zero points all season, outscoring opponents 193-0. The 1983 team featuring Bo Jackson went 11–1 and finished the season by beating Michigan in the Sugar Bowl. Despite the team entering the game ranked third in the AP and both teams ranked ahead losing their bowl games, Auburn was jumped by fifth ranked Miami for the AP National Title. The 1993 team was ineligible to play in a postseason bowl game due to NCAA-imposed sanctions.[16] The undefeated 2004 squad (13–0) finished second in the AP and Coaches Top 25 polls, but the team was awarded the 2004 Fanspoll.com People’s National Champion title.[17] After USC was stripped of the FWAA title, the organization discussed awarding the Grantland Rice Award to Auburn but ultimately voted not to award a trophy for 2004.[18] Auburn University officially only claims the Associated Press (AP) National Championship of 1957[19] (although the school does acknowledge the 1913, 1983, 1993 and 2004 titles in their media guide).[20]

As a matter of fact Mullet head, we are the most successful SEC West team since re-alignment

While Auburn football has a long and storied history, the Tigers have been quite successful in recent years. Since the expansion of the SEC and the split into divisions, Auburn has been the winningest SEC West team in league play since the conference realignment in 1992.[21] As of the end of the 2009 season, Auburn teams have won 33 of their last 50 conference matchups including 16 of the last 24 SEC away games. The Tigers seem to perform best when facing their greatest challenge as, in addition to the success on the road in the SEC, Auburn teams have won 9 of their last 16 matchups versus top-10 opponents. The Tigers also have done well protecting Jordan-Hare Stadium, particularly at night where the home team has won 18 of the 22 night games since 2000. Over the five seasons prior to 2009, Auburn won 47 games

Two points about Urban. Last years Sudden “Retirement” was more about getting caught with pants down with a certain 22 year old Tri Delta Delta co-ed then it was being physically burned out.
He was allowed to keep his job only due to the fact there were worries their top recruiting class would fall apart at the seams. After this incident he was “skating on thin ice”, and could not afford any further incidents. Well, the next incident and nail in the coffin was leaking private and federally protected confidential academic records involving a certain soon to be Heisman Trophy winner.
His relationship with New York Times writer Pete Thaymel has been proven by be true and verified by phone records by George Lawson and the rest of his legal team. Even at the risk of losing top rated recruiting classes pale in comparison to dragging UF thru the penalties with breaking Federal Law. Good Riddance. Next time keep it in your pants, and keep that rat trap of a mouth shut.
We will be better off in the long run, as we find a coach who isn’t so married to the spread.

Meyer took the departure of Tebow a little too hard, spending the night in his hospital room and all that special attention and emotional attachment. If Meyer winked at Spikes and Rainey, I am sure that he would have double winked at Newton, who left UF on his own accord. The bottom line is, Meyer is seriously lacking in character, not unlike Petrino and Saban, each of whom will fly to another job at the drop of a bag of money. Meyer will be back at the college level, maybe at Michigan. His sanctimonious air will not fly in the NFL, and there he would just be another college bust like Petrino, Saban, and Spurrier.

NCAA rolls Crimson Tide for violations

By John Zenor, The Associated Press

Alabama in state of shock over NCAA penalties

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The NCAA placed Alabama on five years’ probation Friday, jolting the program Bear Bryant built into a power with a two-year bowl ban and heavy scholarship reductions.

The governing body said it considered giving the Crimson Tide the most severe punishment — the death penalty — under the repeat violator rules for a recruiting scandal in which boosters were accused of paying money for high school players.

“They were absolutely staring down the barrel of a gun,” said Thomas Yeager, chairman of the infractions committee.

‘Bama busted

Major findings cited by the NCAA Infractions Committee in imposing penalties on the Alabama football program:

A recruit, identified in news reports as Kenny Smith, and his parents were given $20,000 in cash, lodging and entertainment by two Crimson Tide boosters beginning in 1995. The first payment of $10,000 was made in $100 bills delivered in a grocery bag. Smith signed with Alabama but couldn’t meet academic requirements.

An Alabama booster previously identified as Logan Young of Memphis, Tenn., gave cash to a high school coach who was seeking $100,000 cash and two sport-utility vehicles in exchange for directing star recruit Albert Means to Alabama.

An assistant coach, former recruiting coordinator Ronnie Cottrell, received two loans totaling $56,600 from Young in violation of NCAA rules. The loan was not repaid until the case became known.

Two boosters involved in repeated rules violations were known to the Alabama staff, coaches and fans and often were seen at the team hotel during road games.

A recruit, identified previously as Travis Carroll, was given the use of a car in 1999 for agreeing to attend Alabama. The car was repossessed when Carroll transferred to Florida.

“These violations are some of the worst, most serious that have ever occurred,” he said.

The university, accused of 11 major violations — one was later withdrawn — and five minor charges under two former coaches, said it would appeal

The Tide contested the two most publicized charges involving claims of boosters making five-figure payments to lure two recruits.

But it admitted some violations and imposed penalties on itself, including a reduction of 15 scholarships over three years and the temporary disassociation of three boosters at the heart of the recruiting scandal.

The university-imposed sanctions did not include a postseason ban.

The NCAA reduced the number of football scholarships the school can award by 21 over three years. It also said the university would face tougher penalties if it did not permanently disassociate the boosters.

The sanctions could cost the university millions. Last year, Alabama received about $1.5 million from its share of the Southeastern Conference’s bowl proceeds and its take from the Independence Bowl.

The violations occurred under former coaches Mike DuBose and Gene Stallings.

None of the accusations involve current coach Dennis Franchione or his staff. Franchione was out of town recruiting on the final weekend before national signing day.

“Although the penalties handed down today are much stiffer than we anticipated, the mystery is cleared up and we know what we are up against,” he said. “The coaches, the players and I must roll up our sleeves and work that much harder to sustain and restore Crimson Tide football.”

DuBose released a statement through a Birmingham law firm.

“I am deeply distressed and surprised by the severity of the sanctions handed down today by the NCAA,” he said. “I am especially disappointed for the players, current coaching staff and all of the fans of our university.”

If Alabama is found guilty of further violations during the probationary period, Yeager suggested the death penalty — the elimination of a sports program — could result.

“God forbid, there’s ever another appearance — ever,” Yeager said. “Should there be one — particularly within the five-year period — I don’t know what’s left.”

The university contended that accusations of a $20,000 payment to prospect Kenny Smith in the mid-1990s fell outside the governing body’s statute of limitations.

Alabama officials also argued the NCAA couldn’t prove that high school coaches for Memphis prospect Albert Means received money to steer the defensive lineman to Alabama, or that any money was linked to Tide booster Logan Young.

But the NCAA said a booster agreed to give Means’ coach $115,000 to get Means to sign with Alabama and said three payments of $10,000 were made.

Means signed with the Tide, but has since transferred to Memphis. Young, a Memphis businessman, was one of the boosters dissociated from the university. He has denied any wrongdoing in the recruiting of Means.

Alabama’s football program was placed on three years’ probation in 1995. All-America defensive back Antonio Langham admitted signing with a sports agent the morning after the Tide gained the national title with a Sugar Bowl win over Miami but returned to play his senior season.

So what about all those recruits and their parents that he lied to saying I’ll be here for the next 4 years to take care of your son. Guys like Matt Elam, who enrolled early. Their vaunted recruited classes that haven’t amounted to much because of an extreme lack of discipline and consistency in dealing with star players.

He’s a joke and should be treated as such.

Take a look at his coaching tree and it is impressive. When he loses coaches, he doesn’t replace them with competent ones and that is what got them killed in 2010. Steve Addazio was an OL coach, he should not have been calling the plays and Florida fans were right for calling him to be moved.

Urban’s offensive genius was not his own: He had Mike Sanford at Utah and Dan Mullen at Florida. What happend when those guys went away? Urban doesn’t call the plays, he never has. He doesn’t even develop the Offensive Game Plan!

This is why a competent HC in Jimbo Fisher destroyed him at Doak.

He’s a great recruiter and great evaluator of coaching talent. If those makes you a great coach, so be it.

He’s a fraud and would have been beaten into oblivion in 2011 by better head coaches (Spurrier, Fisher, Saban, Miles). I have a feeling no one is begging him to stick around Florida after this season in a “consultant” role.

We may never know why Meyer decided to leave at this time. Maybe it was his decision maybe not. It could be the that Florida sees a trend forming in the way he handles unruly players. Explain to me how the truth is “nonsense”. Were any of the articles I posted “inaccurate”? Alabama been on probation 3 times in the past decade, have they not? Were they not threatened with the Death Penalty? Are they still not in that window? Wake up Gomer!!

The governing body said it considered giving the Crimson Tide the most severe punishment — the death penalty — under the repeat violator rules for a recruiting scandal in which boosters were accused of paying money for high school players.

Asheville Dawg- you can call Meyer classless for the timeouts when you also call Richt classless for encouraging his team to rush the field for a TD. Saban being reported for violations by other coaches
The coaches of the SEC certainly have their eye on Alabama football coach Nick Saban.

According to a report in The Birmingham News, Saban has been accused of violations by other teams more than any other head coach in the country.

In his seven months at Alabama, Saban’s name has turned up more than any other coach’s in other schools’ allegations of secondary NCAA rules violations, an official with knowledge of the infractions process says.

1. Meyer was paid to win FB games– period! Mark Richt would have banished Chris Rainey (who was the difference in the UF win over UGA this year.) But Urban Meyer is NOT Mark Richt!
2. The reason Florida has come up in the CFB world is simple: The huge increase in the population of the state of Florida over the past 25 years. Any decent coach should be able to win big at Florida.

I’ve never understood how anyone – even an alumnus – could support and take pride in UGA’s football team. When you look at their history for the past forty years, how can anyone ignore Jan Kemp and the “remedial studies” scam, the Jim Harrick fiasco, the DUIs in the athletic office, the DUIs and other arrests of players, the #1 party school tag (i.e., the most drunk students), the suspensions and outright dismissals, the Fulmer Cup, and on and on?

As disgraceful and humiliating as it is, I don’t see many alums and fans demanding an end to this sordid activity. It sets UGA apart as the kind of school most people abhor, and it’s become an embarrassment to the whole state of Georgia.

Will it never end? Apparently not while Mark Richt is at UGA. Richt is perhaps the biggest hypocrite in the United States. But even with all the cheating and lawlessness that he ignores, he still can’t win the SEC.

So you’re paying him to be BCS champions, but he can’t even win his SEC division. So why do you pay him millions of dollars a year?

Just asking.

Tony Barnhart is a Gomer

Urbane Crier. I take no joy in seeing him resign. I’d call him a good coach, not a great coach. That couldn’t be proven until he was around to coach and win at Florida through multiple recruiting classes and endless changes in assistants. Quite often “good” coaches reap the benefits of prior coaches and up and coming assistants. Great coaches keep producing those recruits and great up and coming assistants. Meyer has only completed the first part of that equation.

Besides, his multiple personality disorder is finally taking complete control and he can’t fight it anymore. He is also a drama queen. Take the money and go ya’bum

The fact that he didn’t go ahead and leave last year doesn’t set well with me. Florida would be crazy to let him stay now after all this, even if he DID change his mind like he did last year. his assistant coaches are what made Meyer look good…….

This is what good HCs do. They hire the best and brightest…then let them do their stuff.

Bryant had arguably the best staff in college football in the 60s and 70s. Schnellenberger, Dye, Stallings, Bill Oliver, etc…were all on his staff at one time or another.

Meyer was saddled with the task of replacing Charlie Strong, and Dan Mullen. The road was a bit bumpy, but I’m guessing Meyer would have worked it out by next season.

It’s really amazing at how a key assistant influences the results. I thought the loss of James Willis at Bama this past season was a huge part in the three losses. Saban is now tasked with plugging that leak.

BAMA dude

December 9th, 2010
10:28 am

Actually, the funny thing is that those who want Richt gone should be least excited about this. Let’s say UF does lose a lot of recruits this year. A new coach in transition will probably be vulnerable for a year or two, meaning Richt could be looking at needing only a win in Atlanta over the Chickens for a SECCG berth. A trip to the ATL would get him another three years easily.

First
As a college coach, whats left to accomplish.
He’s made a bunch of mney, he has 2 NC’s, coached a Hesiman trophy winning QB, a long wining record in several places, his offensive model has become a proven winner and is now being replicated at every level.

Second
His “retirement” has certainly made Joe Paterno look
like the mental-health patient JoePa’s sadly become.

Third
He’s certaionly beaten the best
he has faced(Ohio State, Oklahoma, Bama, Auburn, FSU, Miami, etc etc.)

And, he’s repeatedly humiliated his “chief nemesis”
Mark Richt and UGAG in memorable fashion.

I’d say he’s filled out his resume pretty well.

God, I hate conspiracy freaks. Yeah, Meyer made Cam Newton steal and/or accept a stolen laptop? Meyer leaked Newton’s academic record? Wait, was that Meyer on the Grassy Knoll in Dallas?

The story was reported on a sports blog on November 5, 2010. That was over a month ago. What have we heard since? Nada. Zip. Zilch. Zero. Thanks for playing.

Give it a rest.

We’ll have to agree to disagree. It’s a factor but rarely the deciding factor. It’s more of a warm/fuzzy for the parents if the parents are involved in the decision. If a kid grows up a Georgia fan and he gets heavily recruited by Georgia, it really isn’t going to matter who the HC is unless he is someone the kid despises. There are a number of factors that are in play, the HC is but one and not the biggest

Will the Zimba and the Auburn O-line grind the much smaller oregon D-line into a fine powder as Cam and Dyer runs thru gaping holes?

Will Michigan state take out their anger on Alabama or will Saban give the spartans coach another heartache?

Key quote: Petrino, who is paid $2.85 million annually by the Razorbacks, is not permitted to leave Arkansas for another Southeastern Conference Western Division school according to the terms of his contract. But the Gators are in the SEC East. Petrino’s contract includes a $6.75 milion buyout if he were to leave the Razorbacks before Dec. 31. The buyout drops to $4.75 million after Dec. 31.

“He was the perfect coach for Florida- arrogance personified!”

Lots of snarky comments today, aren’t there?

Yes, in many ways, Urban Meyer was the perfect coach for Florida. He was a family man who treated his players like they were an extended family, some times to his own detriment. His players went to class, or they rode the pine. There was no pay-for-play hanky-panky. His teams were disciplined on the field, and when a player got in trouble off the field, Meyer imposed appropriately measured punishment (Tony’s comments notwithstanding). His players graduated at the second highest rate in the SEC, following only Vanderbilt. And his teams won a lot of football games, too.

That having been said, no man is irreplaceable and there are things in life that are more important in life than college football. Urban Meyer knows that, and if he didn’t, he seems to have absorbed that along the way. His coaching career burned brightly in Gainesville, but it was already apparent at Bowling Green and Utah that Meyer was going to be a rock-star coach. Now, it’s done; six years, an 81% winning average, three SEC championship games, two SEC championships, six New Year’s bowls, and two BCS championships. Not bad, coach. Not bad.

Yup. Meyer was a the perfect coach for Florida. And if we could find some one just like Urban Meyer ver. 2005, we would take him in a heartbeat.

“It’s much easier for a coach to tell a player “they are all out to get us” instead of “dealing with the media–good and bad–is part of growing up. If you want to play at the next level you need to learn how to deal with these people and be smart about it. We will teach you how to do that.” But that takes work and, in some coaches’ narrow view of the world, it has nothing to do with winning and losing and so it should simply be eliminated as a factor. It is short sighted but if you win enough games, being short sighted eventually becomes a virtue.”

Tony- perhaps if some of your fellow media brethren spent more time REPORTING the news rather than trying to CREATE the news Meyer and other coaches would grant more access to their players and themselves. Instead many (not all of course) spend more time trying to figure out how they can edit someone’s responses to questions to make the responses more sensational or stir up controversy. I’m obviously not a UF fan, but that reporter that Urban dressed down at his practice was wrong. He clearly took a young man’s words (D.Thompson) and spun them around to make it appear he was criticizing Tebow when he wasn’t. Almost everyone in the media ran to the defense of this guy and very few had a problem with what he tried to stir up. It’s things like this that cause coaches to have a “Us against them” attitude towards the media, not because they are taking the “easy” road and not teaching them to deal with the media.

Zook is a player’s coach, and had significant trouble disciplining his players. Most of the internal problems never hit the media. One of my long-time friends is another one of the Gators’ national championship-winning coaches, and my friend says that virtually every other Gator coach thought Zook was as dumb as a rock. He put his foot wrong with the university administration, and then he lost Foley’s backing after an on-campus incident at a fraternity house where Zook was directly involved in a shouting match with students. It was only a matter of days thereafter, that Machen and Foley fired him mid-season. Zook was in the middle of his third season, and the program was still going in reverse. It’s the one and only time Foley has ever pulled the plug on a coach mid-season, and he was almost certainly ordered to do it by the university president because Zook was an embarrassment, not on the field, but off it.

Unlike Auburn and Tuscaloosa, the football coach answers directly to the athletic director, who in turn answers directly to the president and the university board of trustees. The president, with the backing of the board, still runs the show. There is a separate board of directors for the University Athletic Association, but they are responsible mainly for the financial aspects of the athletic program. Major policy still comes from the president and the university trustees, as it should.

Why is he now resigning then? The timing of this is just coincedental? That “conspiracy theory” may have hit close to home huh?

Come on, Tony. Its not like he was Joe Pa or Bobby Bowden here. Meyer is one of those coaches that blows in, wins early, and then leaves before he has to go through the pain of addressing attrition in his program. Add to that, he has a serious ego, and as you pointed out, had a variety of questionable decisions.

All I have to say is, Dawg fans calling for Richts head should be ashamed. Meyer’s program fell off a cliff in his 6th year. Richt? It was year 9 thanks to Stafford and Moreno leaving early for the NFL. Meyer’s program could not sustain the departure of Tebow and Co. Richt’s program won the SEC the year after Green and Pollack left. Meyer’s program showed immediately the loss of Strong and Mullen. Richt’s offense is still doing pretty well under Bobo after 4-5 years, and it took Martinez’s 4th season for the defense to fall off.

Up next? Watch Nick Saban. His program took a step back this year. He loses McElroy and likely Ingram, Richardson, and Julio Jones. Lets see if he decides to stick it out for the rebuild.

What planet are you living on man? “Appropriated measured punishment”? Aggravated stalking & armed robbery I believe here’s the link of all players arrested during UM’s tenure. Quite a rap sheet.

Starting in 2009, the Orlando Sentinel compiled a list of Florida football players arrested or charged with a crime since coach Urban Meyer took over six years ago

http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/2010-09-17/sports/os-florida-gators-arrests-list-20100915_1_frankie-hammond-second-degree-misdemeanor-charge-misdemeanor-possession

Ha. Richardson replaces Ingram and we have two studs to battle it out for the QB spot. Bama has at LEAST seven players from the All-SEC first or second teams returning next season, and that number assumes that Jones, Ingram, and Dareus all leave. combine that with another top five recruiting class and I don’t think there will be much to rebuild.

Since you know so much where did the leak of Newton’s records come from then? It was either Meyer or someone on his staff that would have had to have known about Cam’s academic record at UF. Are you asserting the conversation between Mullen & Meyer never took place? It’s funny how you left this part of the post out LoL

Time flies, but Urban Meyer was the Gators head coach for six full seasons. Only four coaches have stayed in Gainesville longer—-Spurrier (12), Ray Graves (10), Bob Woodruff (10) and Doug Dickey (9). As a six-year coach, it’s tough to understand how you can say that he didn’t have to manage his own recruits. Tim Tebow? Percy Harvin? Both recruited by Meyer. He’s also had top-5 recruiting classes four out of six years (twice, No. 1), and had top-10 or top-15 classes the other two years. Tough to see how he didn’t hold up his end of the bargain.

Little reading for you ATL Gator. Since you know so much: If Urban wasn’t the source who was??

Source for FoxSports.com story on Cam Newton likely violated federal law
Auburn, Florida Gators, Football, Urban Meyer — posted by Rachel George on November, 9 2010 6:58 PM
In the past week, Auburn QB Cam Newton has faced accusations of recruiting violations and academic cheating. (US Presswire photo)
Florida coach Urban Meyer has denied being the source for a FoxSports.com story alleging academic cheating by Auburn QB Cam Newton during his time at Florida.

Whoever leaked the info, however, could face legal repercussions.

According to The Buckley Amendment, a university or institution cannot release confidential information without the consent of the student.

From the UF website:

“Student directory information that can be released to the public is limited to name, class, college and major; dates of attendance; degree(s) earned; honors and awards received; local, permanent and e-mail addresses; telephone number; most recent previous educational institution attended; participation in officially recognized activities and sports; and the weight and height of members of athletic teams.”

Explanation of the Buckley Amendment on the school’s website also says:

“Non-directory information, such as grades and/or disciplinary records, will not be released to a third party without express written consent of the student.”

According to the FoxSports.com story, Newton allegedly had three different instances of academic cheating during his two years at Florida. The story said Newton faced expulsion at UF before leaving the school after the fall 2008 semester (although, this story says it’s unlikely Newton would have been expelled).

“We can’t comment on federally protected student records,” UF spokesman Steve McClain said.

It’s unclear who the source for the story was, but UF seems the likely place to start looking

Little light reading for those interested in finding out who the REAL cheaters are (Hint, Hint)

Former coach says he took payoff in Alabama recruiting scandal
By Woody Baird, The Associated Press
MEMPHIS — A former high school coach testified Tuesday that he took a $150,000 payoff to send his top football player to the University of Alabama.
Lynn Lang said he received the money from Logan Young, a Memphis millionaire who is on trial on federal bribery and money laundering charges.

Lang is awaiting sentencing on a guilty plea to racketeering conspiracy. He said he took the money to convince defensive lineman Albert Means to sign with Alabama in 2000.

Young’s lawyers contend Lang is lying to save himself from a long prison sentence.

Means, who has not been accused of wrongdoing, testified earlier in the day that he let Lang choose his college.

Lang said he began shopping Means around to various colleges when he realized in 1999 how many schools wanted him. He said he was referred to Young, a longtime Alabama booster, by former Crimson Tide assistant coach Ivy Williams.

Lang said he began the bidding for Means at $50,000, and Young “took to it like water.”

Lang said he kept upping the price until it topped out at $150,000, which he received in a series of payments each smaller than $10,000, the threshold at which bank transactions must be reported.

Young told him that since the payments were in cash, “If anything happened, it was his word against mine,” Lang testified.

Beginning his cross examination, defensive lawyer James Neal questioned Lang about denials of taking a payoff he made to federal investigators, the NCAA and officials with the Memphis school system.

Neal was to continue his questioning Wednesday.

In his testimony, Means said he depended on Lang to deal with college recruiters.

“He took care of everything else,” Means said. “That’s why I trusted him.”

Means also said someone else, who was not identified in court, took his college entrance exam for him, and he acknowledged lying about that to a grand jury.

“I was afraid,” he said.

While entering his guilty plea in 2002, Lang said he arranged for a stand-in to take Means’ entrance exam.

Means, who said he had never met Young, stayed at Alabama for one football season. He transferred to the University of Memphis after reports of a payoff to Lang became public.

Alabama’s recruitment of Means became part of an NCAA investigation that led to sanctions against the Crimson Tide in 2002 that deprived the team of scholarships and bowl eligibility.

Means wrapped up his eligibility to play college football last season and expects to graduate in May. He said he hopes to have a professional football career.

Lisa Mallory, a former girlfriend of Young’s, told the jury he is a heavy drinker who likes to brag about Alabama football.

She said Young talked about Means, saying, “He’s mine.”

Under defense questioning, she said Young also made similar comments about other high school players who did not sign with Alabama but went to other colleges.

Mallory said Young often carried large amounts of cash, spent heavily at bars and restaurants and gambled with sports bookies and at casinos.

One of the charges against Young accuses him of setting up bank withdrawals to hide a crime. The defense contends he often makes bank withdrawals under $10,000.

“He spends a lot of money doesn’t he?” defense lawyer Robert Hutton asked Mallory.

“A lot,” she replied.

With the jury out of the courtroom, prosecutors sought permission to call a witness who would say Young boasted about sending other athletes to Alabama.

U.S. District Court Judge Daniel Breen said the prosecution failed to lay a legal foundation to directly link such testimony to the charges against Young. Breen denied the request but said he might reconsider it.

Kirk also says Lang required a payment up front before even agreeing to send his star player on recruiting trips — with representatives of Kentucky having paid $6,000, and Alabama and Georgia $4,000 each.

Kirk says Georgia booster Bill Harper was hit up to cover the cost of a van and other expenses for a planned unofficial visit that Means and Lang never took to the Athens, Ga., campus. “[Harper] asked for his money back, [but] Coach Lang wouldn’t budge on that one,” Kirk says.

The College Football Research Center lists Auburn as the 14th best college football program in history,[3] with eight Auburn squads listed in Billingsley’s Top 200 Teams of All Time (1869–2006).[4] ESPN ranked Auburn 21st overall[5] and 22nd in the BCS era,[6] behind several other SEC schools, including Florida, Georgia, LSU, Tennessee, and arch-rival Alabama.

The Associated Press poll statistics show Auburn with the 11th best national record of being ranked in the final AP Poll[7] and 12th overall (ranked 470 times out of 970 polls since the poll began in 1936), with an average ranking of 11.26.[8] Since the Coaches Poll first released a final poll in 1950, Auburn has 25 seasons where the team finished in the top 20 in both the AP and Coaches Polls.[9]

Auburn has the 13th most wins in D-1A college football.[10] In terms of winning percentage, Auburn ranks as the 9th most successful team in the past 25 years with a 71.6% win rate (214–83–5)[11] and 12th over the last 50 years with 63.0% (386–176–10).[12] Of the 93 current I-A football programs that been active since Auburn first fielded a team 116 years ago, Auburn ranks 13th in winning percentage over that period.[13]

Heisman links
Two Auburn players, Pat Sullivan in 1971 and Bo Jackson in 1985, have won the Heisman Trophy. The Trophy’s namesake, John Heisman, coached at Auburn from 1895 until 1899. More from the Albert Means case:

In prior testimony in U.S. District Court, Lang said coaches at two other Southeastern Conference schools, Kentucky and Georgia, gave him money. He also testified that Tennessee, Mississippi, Michigan State and Arkansas offered money for Means but never paid.

Under cross examination by defense lawyer James Neal on Wednesday, Lang added Memphis to the list of schools that offered him a deal, testifying that then-coach Rip Scherer said he would arrange for Lang’s wife to attend law school for free at the university.

Lang also told jurors that former Arkansas assistant coach Fitz Hill offered him either an assistant coaching job worth more than $80,000 a year or $150,000 in cash if he delivered Means and another player. Hill later became the head coach at San Jose State before resigning this past season.

Logan Young, Key Figure in Alabama Scandal, Murdered
James Joyner | Tuesday, April 11, 2006

ESPN is reporting that “A man found dead Tuesday in a Memphis home is believed to be Logan Young, an Alabama booster convicted of bribing a high school football coach to get a top recruit for the Crimson Tide.”

Police are investigating the case as a homicide. They have not yet confirmed the body was Young, but the Memphis Commercial Appeal reported on its Web site Tuesday that that detectives were working at a house where Young’s body was found. “We’re treating it as a mystery homicide,” Sgt. Vince Higgins told The Associated Press. He said officials assume the victim was Young but needed to use fingerprints and dental records to confirm the identity. “Suffice it to say, there was quite a physical struggle in this and this individual was injured severely,” he said.

Nashville attorney Jim Neal, who defended Young, said he had been told the body was found by a housekeeper. “I’ve had two or three calls about it, all to the same end, found killed in his home. … I heard that there was blood everywhere. That is all I know,” Neal said. Higgins said Young’s housekeeper found the body after she arrived for work this morning. The body had not been removed from the house and no family members immediately arrived at the house.

The 65-year-old Young was convicted under federal law of money laundering and racketeering conspiracy in the case involving the peddling of defensive lineman Albert Means. Young was sentenced in June to six months in prison and six months of home confinement then two years of supervised release. But he had been allowed to remain free pending his appeal.

[...]

Means’ recruitment became part of an NCAA investigation that led to sanctions against Alabama in 2002, costing the Crimson Tide scholarships and bowl appearances.

Attorney Tommy Gallion, who represented Williams and former Alabama assistant Ronnie Cottrell in a defamation suit against the NCAA and others, called the news tragic. “I have no idea who could be behind this. I was shocked that Phillip Shanks was beaten and this was more shocking,” Gallion said in a statement read by his secretary. Shanks was assisting Gallion on the lawsuit in May 2004 when he was attacked in his office and left unconscious. Key case documents were stolen, he said. No one was ever charged in the case.

Defense attorney Robert Hutton said he last talked with Young last week and called his death a total shock and a real loss. “He was very generous man. He was generous with people around him. A pastor of a Catholic Church, he asked for money for some program, for the roof or something, and he gave him the money. Logan wasn’t even Catholic,” Hutton said. “He was a wonderful character. I really enjoyed him as a person. It’s just a horrible tragedy.”

I don’t know much about Logan Young but certainly have no good feelings toward him in his role in embroiling my alma mater in a major scandal, setting the football program back several years.

It should go without saying that physical violence, let alone murder, is well beyond the pale for anything surrounding young men playing a game. Sadly, Young’s obsessession with college football made him notorious. Apparently, it led someone even more obsessed to kill him.

SEC Fact Checker

December 9th, 2010
4:03 pm

The 10 most Demanding Collegiate Head Coaching Jobs are in the SEC. We can exclude Vanderbilt and Kentucky( and Kentucky is beginning to take that leap to the pressure cooker job) as they have other priorities such academics and basketball.

We can say the pressure at Nebraska, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Ohio St, Michigan, Florida St, and a select few others are right up there with the prime SEC schools who spend more money on football and make more money from college football than many conferences as a whole earn from the sport. Money Puts the pressure on the Head Coaches to produce and to win each year.

People in other parts of the country to do not get the fact that College Football rules the sports sections in the south. We live, breath, get married, get divorces, set funerals, delay church services, schedule business trips, schedule vacations, and every major decision around our football schedule. Many many coaches have moved to the south to take the controls of one of our great historic football programs only to be gobbled up in the job. Did Urban Meyer see the writing on the wall as his do everything quarterback(Tebow) and a host of current NFL to be players left Florida to graduation or early exits?

If a coach is not willing to live, breathe, eat college football 365/24/7 he is not going to last in the South. Whether it is pee wee, middle school, high school, Junior College, Div. I, II, III or NAIA it matters to the people who are invested in those kids, programs, and schools.

Urban Meyer should be applauded for knowing he could not give the UF fans what they deserved and for knowing when the time was right for his resignation. Most UF fans will say after this past season he should have kept his resignation last December in place, but remember all those 5 star recruits he signed in February? Thanks to Urban Meyer some of the most talented players on that roster will be there for 3 and 4 more years.

The real question being asked now by UGA fans is: Does Mark Richt have that fire in his belly to rebuild the UGA program to the level needed to satisfy the 30 year absence from a National Title?
And that is not a retooling job, it is a rebuilding job.

The Auburn football team’s performance in the N.C.A.A.’s new rankings of student athletes’ academic progress surprised many educators on and off campus. The team had the highest ranking of any Division I-A public university among college football’s six major conferences. Over all among Division I-A football programs, Auburn trailed only Stanford, Navy and Boston College, and finished just ahead of Duke

Another one that illustrates the lack of core educational priorites at Auburn University.

The funny thing is someone called Auburn Running Back U. Yes they have produced many many great running backs over the past 30 plus years. The problem is beside producing great football players university is to provide a quality education to those same athletes who run onto the football field. How many players listed on the list provided by the blogger actually graduated from Auburn?
How many of those players are now productive citizens? After their NFL careers how many went on to give something back to the communities in which they were pampered and babied through the system?

Here you go.

So Professor Gundlach looked at the player’s academic files, which led him to the discovery that many Auburn athletes were receiving high grades from the same professor for sociology and criminology courses that required no attendance and little work.

Eighteen members of the 2004 Auburn football team, which went undefeated and finished No. 2 in the nation, took a combined 97 hours of the courses during their careers. The offerings, known as directed-reading courses, resemble independent study and include core subjects like statistics, theory and methods, which normally require class instruction.

The professor for those players and many other athletes was Thomas Petee, the sociology department’s highest-ranking member. The star running back Carnell (Cadillac) Williams, now playing in the National Football League, said the only two classes he took during the spring semester of his senior year were one-on-one courses with Professor Petee.

At one point, Professor Petee was carrying the workload of more than three and a half professors, an academic schedule that his colleagues said no one could legitimately handle.

One day, however, when the likes of Meyer, Spurrier and Chizik are old and no one remembers or cares about them except their immediate families, they may want to check in with Mark Richt and discover who the real winners are in this life. We all write our funerals every day, and I do believe, in the end, that character is important than how many football games and championships you may have won 20 or 30 years ago. Perhaps Urban realized he was right about his priorities last year, and decided it was time to get it right this time.

UGA’s A.J. Green out due to ongoing NCAA probe

Posted by Chip Patterson

North Carolina, South Carolina, and Alabama have all had to sideline top playmakers because of agent-related NCAA investigations. Now we can add Georgia to the list.

Earlier in the week, Mark Richt refused to speak on the issue of A.J. Green’s eligibility, but on Saturday morning the university released a statement confirming Green’s absence from the lineup against Louisiana-Lafayette.

Georgia released a statement barely two hours before game time, saying Green “will miss Saturday’s game … pursuant to UGA Athletic Association policy and pending a ruling from the NCAA clarifying his status.”
Georgia had hoped to receive word from the NCAA before Saturday’s kickoff, but similarly to the other agent-related situations there has yet to be a ruling. If Georgia had played Green and he was later deemed ineligible, the Bulldogs would be forced to vacate any potential victory. The NCAA first informed Georgia of their investigation on July 21, Green has still been listed as the first-string receiver on the depth chart, although the coaching staff has acknowledged the possibility of playing without him.

Running back Washaun Ealey, wide receiver Tavarres King and safety Alec Ogletree will also be sidelined for Saturday’s game, all due to recent arrests.

3-The Seven Dwarfs are in a cave when the roof collapses. Snow White runs to the entrance and yells into the darkness, “Somebody, say something!”

A distant voice responds, “Oregon will win the BCS Championship!”

Snow White sighs, “Oh, thank goodness! At least, Dopey is still alive!”

I am know Urban Meyer fan, but this is about more than family here. You can see it in his face. He is tired of having to deal with many of today’s athletes. Arrests, players threatening to boycott a tough practice and many other things. You can look at the Cam Newton fiasco and the Meyer situation and see that there are many things wrong with college athletics, particularly football and basketball. Nobody is willing to clamp down on things because there is so much money involved now. Coaches have to put up with so much more now that has nothing to do with x and o’s.

Looks like you’re long on hyperbole and short on facts. Saban went to Dolphins owner Wayne Hiezuenga who made a counter offer to keep Saban there. Saban kept him apprised of the situation and after a couple of days of mulling over the offer decided to take the Bama job. There was a lot of crap thrown at Urban Meyer on this blog today, including questioning the sincerity with which he treated his Gators football players. Most of the comments were made by grown men who should know better. I just came across a story about the Pouncey twins, and their head coach, which I thought to share with you. Excerpt and link follow:

“As he lay on the ground, his right leg gone, Webster [the Pouncey twins' step-father] tried to fashion a tourniquet with his belt, unthreading it from the loops of his pants when a train mechanic found him. Together Webster and the mechanic wrapped the belt around the stub of Webster’s knee, halting the flow of blood. That was when the dread suddenly swept through Webster’s body.

“Florida was playing Florida State that weekend. The Gators needed to win to keep their national championship hopes alive and now everyone’s going to be distracted by The Pouncey Twins’ father getting into an accident.

“Then he went to the hospital and lost consciousness for two days.

“It was Michael who Lisa Webster [the twins' mother] called that morning. She was crying and screaming into the phone. At first the twins, who were heading to class, thought she was playing a joke. Lisa Webster often did such things, making weeping phone calls to her sons, making them believe something horrible had happened until bursting into laughter. Ha. Ha. Gotcha. Only this time she didn’t laugh. They raced to Lakeland.

“As Robert Webster lay in his hospital bed a pall did indeed descend over the Florida Gators. Coach Urban Meyer, defensive coordinator Charlie Strong and offensive line coach Steve Addazio flew down to check on the family. When Webster finally awoke on the Wednesday before the Florida State game, his boys looked down, terrified.

“’I’m glad you came,’ their father said. ‘You have a team to go play. Y’all got a game to play this weekend.’

“And with that, the Pouncey twins were sent back to Gainesville to prepare for Florida State. Three days later, Florida beat Florida State as Webster watched from the hospital. Meyer had old-fashioned sweatbands specially made with the initials “RW” printed on the front. A little more than a month later, Webster was in Miami where the Gators won the national title he always dreamed for his boys.”

That guy Meyer sure is a real, no-character, win-at-all-costs prick.

BTW, I pointed this out earlier today in the blog, but the College Football Hall of Fame minimum requirements for a coach are ten full seasons as a head coach and a 60+% winning average. It’s been fun guys. I must return to grading my law students’ exams. UUUGGGHHHH!!

I especially appreciate Atlanta Gator and the way he conducts himself on these blogs. My apologies to Tide. I certainly did not intend to cause you consternation.

A great holiday season to all of ya’ll.

No War Eagle, we wouldn’t. Cam Newton is just a symbol for what’s wrong with “college” sports. Cam Newton is not a student. He’s a paid, professional football player. You know it and I know it. Cam Newton could not pass English 101 or College Algebra. The NFL needs to have a minor league system like MLB has. So that kids who can barely spell their own name, and are wanting to get paid for their services, like Cam did, can start making money without the pretense of being a student. The *AU program is the filthiest in the NCAA.

So glad we UGA fans have Richt who can balance all his aspects of daily life. I never totally disliked Meyer but thought his relationship with Tebow was just a little over the top. I did dislike him when he continued to call timeouts in 2009 vs UGA, but he just that was an unmanly way to tell UGA he didn’t like the running on the field. I felt that he was definitely too lenient on Rainey, as was Auburn on Fairley. Maybe Meyer had come to Jesus and didn’t like the person he was turning into…. never know, do we????

Then I will likewise apologize. I’m normally a fair minded person but I just get my dander up when I hear the criticisms of Saban, Bama, etc. In any event I’m out. Happy holidays to you, Atlanta Gator, and everyone else.

In order to be a great coach, you’ve got to have the fire. If Urban Meyer has lost his, for whatever reason, no one should begrudge him a break of his own choosing followed by a comeback.. The dangerous thing about comebacks, though, is it’s nearly impossible to catch lightning in a bottle twice. Different school, different players, different staff, and the game does evolve. I’m sure John Heisman, Knute Rockne and even the Bear would struggle for a few seasons, playing catch up, if they made a comeback in 2011.

You hit the nail on the head!!! This is exactly what’s wrong with college athletics, or ATH – E – LEC – TICS as Cam would pronounce it. I’m still wondering where Cam’s dad was the night of the SEC Conference game. He wasn’t sitting with his wife, but was he on the field???

I was about to head out but gonna leave with one last post. I see a couple guys blogging about Cam Newton and him being everything that is wrong with college football.

I think he is the greatest player in college football this year. That being said I find it extremely difficult to believe he had no idea that his father was selling him like chattel. Why?

When Albert Means found out that his high school football coach sold him out to a bama booster and steered him to Bama Means became depressed, distraught, withdrew from school, transferred, and was out of football a year later. He had regarded his high school football coach as a father figure and never got over the betrayal.

Contrast that with Cam’s behavior. His psyche and happy, giddy behavior is certainly not indicative of someone that was just sold out and betrayed by his father.

It would seem to me he either was either in on it with his father or he truly didn’t know but he doesn’t care and has absolutely no problem with what his father did. Either way its not good. A kid who shows no signs of shame or being upset or angry over what his father did strikes me as being very, very odd. I can’t be the only person who finds this very odd.

It is sad for college football that UM is leaving. He’s a great coach and when we played his Gator teams, you had to play your best.

There is no disputing that he is one of the best and will be very tough to replace.

Excellent article Tony, no one is better than you at what you do.

Pointing out his faults(many by now) is needed. He is a stud coach no doubt, but made some bad decisions in the effort of winning, which he did. Mainly Rainey-obvious, terrible. He has daughters and knows it was wrong. His reasoning to leave is solid and commendable. HE should have never came back and too many don’t do this. 15 years ago, a coach could not do this as he did not make $4M a year. His assistants will suffer and UF will shortly. Frankly, I hate UF, but respect him as a coach and more so this 2nd decision. Listen to your family and heart, always.

the rest of us- Maybe so, but that’s bc a lot of people don’t know what they’re talking about. He won his first title w/ Chris Leak as the starting QB, & Tebow barely played. I get tired of people say ing that Tebow won 2 titles. When they don’t even consider that Leak won that title. Tebow may have been a key contributor that season. It’s just the way people make it sound like he was solely responsible for 2 titles…it’s almost like Chris Leak didn’t even exist. I just think it’s inaccurate to not give him any credit though…when you consider that he did win one in that situation. He also won at Utah…back when nobody won there. I’m not a Meyer fan, but I will give credit where it’s due though.

It would be misleading of me to say I do not find a measure of glee in the fact Florida, not Meyer, has a somewhat minor issue on their hands. As far as Coach Meyer leaving, so be it. I think he did a fine job in the W-L columns at UF but does that mean I gotta be sorry he’s hitting the bricks..? Nope. Sorry, TB. Good luck to him and his. Personally, I hope his family holds up their end of the deal…

Tony — I normally love your stuff, but to quote your own column, YOU are flat wrong here.

Consider that most of us hate Urban Meyer NOT for all the winning he did, but because of ALL the reasons you mentioned (his unprofessional behavior, quick temper, lashing out at a reporter for doing his job, keeping thugs like Spikes and Rainey on his team because they were great athletes, etc. etc. etc.) Consider that other coaches have won a lot of games and won national titles — Joe Paterno, Bobby Bowden, Tom Osborne, Vince Dooley, Gene Stallings, Bobby Ross, Johnny Majors, etc. etc. etc. — but all of THOSE guys have earned a lot of respect over the years because of how they behaved and how they dealt with and led the young men in their program.

Urban Meyer proved himself as nothing more than a glory-seeking, win-at-all-costs, obsessive/compulsive, can’t-ever-let-it-go, perfectionist who stalked the sidelines and looked like he was never having fun. For God’s sake, the man got paid tens of millions of dollars to coach a program that basically recruits itself — how could he NOT win SEC titles and national championships at Florida with Tebow, Harvin, Pouncey, Demps, Harvey, Crowder, Nelson, etc.?

Perhaps he has FINALLY seen the light and become human. We all need balance in our lives — Meyer always seemed like the 200% football guy who let losses gnaw at him and got ulcers anytime he got beat. Guys like Bobby Bowden survived as long as they did because they learned how to prioritize things and know what was REALLY important in life.

Sorry, this is one college football fan who will NOT shed any tears for Meyer. Go take some Pepto Bismol and spend time with your family, Urban… some of us who slave away every day at hard jobs for very little pay don’t have TIME to feel sorry for you as you sit on your millions and go to the beach or fish or travel or whatever you do.

Good luck finding your new coach, Florida… I hope this time you get a guy with a little more balance, a little more personality, and a little more moral fiber.

And by the way, Meyer supporters, ask yourself this: do you think for one minute that YOU or even Meyer himself would let an animal like Chris Rainey anywhere NEAR your daughter or his daughter?

I didn’t think so.

He should have been thrown so far off the Gator football team that he was in another area code. Had it been me — an average, slow white kid — I would be in jail right now. But Rainey, a privileged athlete, had powerful Coach Meyer in his corner, so he basically skated after threatening a woman’s life.

Glad to see that ol’ Urban has his priorities straight.

I HOPE for Meyer’s sake that he takes some time away for reflection, rest and re-prioritizing, and maybe he’ll come back a better coach — and a better MAN — in the future.

Your article is both silly and revolting. You think new media can sit behind a computer and just write whatever they want about any sports situation…true or false…and then just be ignored or whatever. What about responsible journalism…something you never see anymore. I think if a reporter writes incorrectly he should be banned from practice, the team, etc. Stop taking up for the hack journalist who cover sports these days.

This just in. Urban Myers is resigning as head coach of the University of Florida. It is rumored he is getting ready to accept the position of head coach of the Denver Broncos. The number one reason for this is he is desperate to have his boy toy Tim Tebow back.

I agree with Tide Rising on the Newton deal. I also see Meyer leaving because he will loose most of his starters on both sides of the ball plus a below average QB returning. He’s in the same place Richt was a few years back. Both coaches lost the main cogs that made the machine run.Richt lost his defensive coach to the NFL, plus the offensive line coach to UAB. Meyer lost both offensive and defensive coordinator coaches in the same year. All of these coaches were some of the best in the country and it just goes to show what happens when you lose certain special coaches placed together to makeup that winning chemistry that’s so delicate in college football. Meyer is no fool. He seen what happened to Richt with top of the line players and seen he was headed down the same road. Richt is still the same person and coach as he was when he came to Georgia and so is Meyer and both are good coaches. Richt chose to try and find that same chemistry and winning combination he put together when he came to Georgia. Meyer on the other hand sees a possibility of a loosing season next year and if that happened Florida fans would be calling for his head just like Georgia fans are calling for Richt the last two. He’s gettin out while the gettin good.

The sport did not burn him out; his own actions did. He drove himself hard. I bet he could dial it back 20% and still be successful. I think sometimes the idea that being in the office means you are working harder than everyone else when it might be insecurity. Also fatigue means you make mistakes. So working while really tired can be counterproductive.

“Florida will never go back for more than a year or two”

Based on what? Miami and F$U both took steps back, and they play in a weaker conference than UF. If Jimbo gets the Noles going again, and Miami makes the right hire, Florida will almost definitely fall off for more than a year or two.
