Auburn beats South Carolina in an instant classic

I can’t believe that I’m writing this, but here is the last Fearless Friday Forecast for the 2010 regular season:

1. Auburn vs. South Carolina (SEC championship): I didn’t think the SEC championship game could ever get better than the last two between Florida and Alabama. In both cases the winner knew it would be in the BCS championship game. But this game is just as big because of some additional storylines:

**–The controversy surrounding Auburn quarterback Cam Newton, which has subsided just a little with a controversial ruling by the NCAA that he is eligible.

**–Auburn having a shot to play for its first national championship since 1957 and perhaps getting payback for 2004, when the Tigers went 13-0 and didn’t a chance to play for the crystal football.

**–Auburn having a chance to give the SEC its fifth straight national championship.

To those good story lines you add the return of Steve Spurrier–The Head Ball Coach–to the game for the first time in 10 years. He won it six times as a Florida Gator and now has the Gamecocks in Atlanta for the first time ever.

If Spurrier wins he would have seven SEC championships and would be second on the all-time list only to Alabama’s Bear Bryant.

This is great stuff. The game? If South Carolina can run the ball a little bit, then this will be a nail-biter until the very end. And there is something special about this Auburn team, which has rallied from double-digit deficits four times this season to win. The Tigers won’t fall behind by double digits but it will fall behind and then rally in the fourth quarter. The final, in an instant classic: Auburn 35, South Carolina 31.

2. Virginia Tech vs. Florida State (ACC championship, Charlotte): If Virginia Tech (10-2) had not stumbled out of the gate at 0-2 with close losses to Boise State (33-30) and James Madison (21-16) the Hokies would be in the national championship discussion right now. But now Virginia Tech has won 10 straight games and will be trying to win its fourth ACC championship in seven years of membership. Florida State (9-3) made huge strides under first-year coach Jimbo Fisher, who replaced the legend, Bobby Bowden. I like the Hokies in a close game. Virginia Tech 28, Florida State 24.

3. Oklahoma vs. Nebraska (Big 12 championship, Arlington, Tex.): It’s kind of fitting that Nebraska’s last game as a member of the Big 12 should be against Oklahoma. For so long these old rivals played “The” game in the old Big Eight. And when the Big 12 conference was formed the yearly battle went away. The game features two old friends as coaches–Oklahoma’s Bob Stoops and Nebraska’s Bo Pelini. They both grew up in Youngstown, Ohio and played at Cardinal Mooney High School. I’m going with Oklahoma because the Sooners have the hot quarterback. Landry Jones has thrown for 1,853 yards and 17 touchdowns in his last five games. Oklahoma 27, Nebraska 21.

4. Oregon at Oregon State (The Civil War): It’s very simple for No. 2 Oregon. Go to Corvallis and win and the Ducks have a date with somebody for the BCS national championship on Jan. 10. The Ducks missed a big bullet on Nov. 13 when they won at California 15-13. The rest of their opponents could not keep up with a fast-break offense that leads the nation in scoring (50.45 points per game). This game will be close for a half because of the emotion involved. But the Ducks wear you down with a relentless pace. Oregon 42, Oregon State 21.

5. Connecticut at South Florida: Randy Edsall, a former assistant coach at Georgia Tech, did one of the best coaching jobs ever in 2009 when he held his team together after the death of popular player Jasper Howard. That Connecticut team won its last four games, including a victory over South Carolina in a bowl game. This season the Huskies started 3-4 overall and 0-2 in the Big East. If they can win at South Florida (7-4) on Saturday, Connecticut will go to the first BCS Bowl (Fiesta) in school history. USF is coached by Skip Holtz, who was the head coach at UConn from 1994-98. The Bulls are coming off a 23-20 upset of Miami last week. Connecticut 21, USF 20.

The only thing really makes this SECCG unique (aside from SC’s participation), is the fact that this will be the most lopsided match-up in the history of Conference playoff games. I’ll pull for the GamecLocks, but I’m not really interested in watching this game.

If true, that would be an ideal resolution to a coaching situation that clearly isn’t working. Addazzio moves on to another offensive coordinator position, sparing Urban Meyer from having to make the decision to fire or demote Addazzio, the guy who helped Meyer keep his own job last winter and spring when Meyer was facing his various stress-related health issues.

I wish Steve Addazzio wrong, but he clearly is the wrong guy to be the coordinator for the Gators’ spread offense.

“getting payback for 2004″
____________________

Tony, if there is something called payback, how about the SEC teams that deserve payback from losses to Auburn in the numerous seasons in which they afterwards put on several years NCAA probation.

Auburn has a history of paying players, and now it’s hard to believe Auburn paid Cam and Cecil?

Consider:

Pat Dye, legendary HC and AD, resigns and must disassociate himself from Auburn for a pay-for- play scheme comes to light.

Former HC Bowden says Auburn boosters were routinely paying recruits $12,000 – $15,000 to sign with Auburn when he became coach, even while Auburn was on NCAA probation from the Dye mess.

Former OC Tony Franklin says, “If I told you what goes on at Auburn, it would make headlines on the National Enquirer.”

Oct, 2010, several businessmen and Auburn Boosters are arrested by FBI in a bribery case where wiretaps were used for up to a year.

When the FBI finishes its case, and shares the wiretaps with the NCAA, the hammer is coming down on Auburn.

Auburn’s lawyers kicked the SEC and NCAA lawyers azz on this one. The powers on the Auburn BOT are running this show folks and they’re all in regardless to what happens down the road. You have to understand the inferiority complex that Auburn cares with them daily. They don’t care about what they will face once the Colonial and the other investigation with the vote buying is complete. The Cam deal is just another piece of the process thath will end Auburn for many years but again these folks don’t Care!!! They want that trophy more than what happens next year or the year following. Think like a fool and you then can understand Auburn much better. A trophy will make them someone for a short period of time and that is all it matters to them. Look back on their conduct after beating UGA…enough said..These are the facts and they’re undeniable.

Dawgtards will, of course, be watching the SEC championship at home as usual. Teams that finish 6-6 just don’t play in a lot of championship games. Unfortunately nothing is going to change until UGA changes its mediocre coaching. That’s where the difference is, and that’s why everyone outside Dawgtard Nation just laughs at Dawg fans getting so excited year after year about what a great recruiting class UGA gets. It doesn’t matter how many blue chip high school players go to UGA, they simply don’t get the coaching they would get at Florida or Alabama, to name two schools whose programs are far ahead of UGA. And that’s not going to change as long as Mark Richt is in Athens.

Agreed. Playcalling is a lot easier when you have Percy Harvin and Louis Murphy on the field. That said, Addazio was also very suspect at getting the right players on the field and/or in the right spots. Debose was one of the more dangerous players on offense and never saw the field. He was a nightmare on special teams and then could never get on the field. SA was also determined to get Deonte Thompson the ball even though he had terrible hands all season and didn’t produce. Jordan Reed didn’t see the field nearly enough either.

While the Gators had talent, the players weren’t good enough to overcome a defense that literally knew exactly what was coming at them nearly 75-80% of the game.

CharlotteGator

December 3rd, 2010
9:28 am

Shane,

I echo MURPHY’s sentiments. Urban certainly deserves some of the criticism as he’s involved in the gameplans and tacitly approves Addazio’s approach. The main problem however lies with Addazio’s predictable nature and lack of agression. His “on schedule” mentality meant that most of the year, DC’s simply had to defend a run on 1st down, a play for 3-4 yards on second down, and the deadly 3rd and long. I can’t tell you how many times Gator fans watched that script play out this season. Opposing defenses basically defended 6-7 yards with 11 players all year as Florida did not threaten anything outside of that much often. It was the mentality you’d expect from a coach who’s out of league as an offensive coordinator. In my opinion, after Mullen left, the OC job should have gone to Billy Gonzalez who’d been with Meyer and Mullen at every stop and helped develop the offense. Addazio was a late arrival to the staff and somehow combined the spread with the 3 yards and a cloud of dust offense to give us the current Frankenstein. While last year’s Gator squad had success, it was obvious to most that the great players on offense were overcoming Addazio’s mentality, not enhanced by it.

Joey,

Point taken. Of course, I’d also grant you that this year’s win was another rabbit out of the hat for the Gators along the lines of the Lito Sheppard punt return game and the Terrance Edwards throw down (it wasn’t a drop, he literally caught the ball and inexplicably threw it on the ground).

Most honest Gator fans will acknowledge that this year’s win was the by product of Burton and Thompson making some freak plays and the defense doing just enough (with an assist from a few UGA lapses). The Dawgs seemed uptight in the first half and came out blazing the second. The Gators did just enough in a game that could have gone either way. With Addazio, consider the gap closed. Addazio and Bobo means both teams are playing with one hand tied behind their backs.

South Carolina is pulling the upset. And Spurrier knows it. That’s why he’s been pumping up this game as “the biggest stage in college football.” He wants to Auburn to know they have all the pressure. It might not even be close.

I find it amusing that prior to the season, many UGA fans were proclaiming (with a certain amount of glee) Spurrier to be washed up and that this would be his last year in coaching because of the frustrations he would encounter in Columbia. Fast forward 14 weeks and suddenly Steve Spurrier is the savior of many the same UGA fans.

I would never take Spurrier lightly. His accomplishments speak for themselves. That being said, I wouldn’t take Auburn lightly either. This year’s team has accomplished some amazing things that many people would have sworn couldn’t be done.

Should be a great game.

This ruling is exactly the same as the Albert Means case at Alabama, except that in the Means case money actually changed hands. It opens no “can of worms.” Means was not eligible at Alabama but was fine at Memphis. Cam Newton wouldn’t be eligible at Mississippi State, but is fine at Auburn.

If one goes to the trouble to think about it, it’s very clear that this ruling is consistent with prior NCAA rulings.

I really never bought into as much because no one has brought proof to sideline Cam. Case closed. Auburn deserves to play just as much as Oregon. I like SC because they are the underdog. I look forward to this game

For the 1st time the ACC CG is a good game to watch. This game could save the ACC as for being the worst conference with a CG. I’m guessing that this game will be their 1st sell-out? Both teams travel well.

Just a gut, I think that Nebraska will upset OU. What do i know, I have been wrong before. The only thing I hate about this weekend is that it means, for the most part, that College Saturday is over with until next year.

Auburn wins a close one.
————————–
Spurrier and Garcia get into ONE FINAL LASTING
sideline “altercation” that will cost Spurrier his job.

FSU wins a very close one.
———————–
IMHO, ACC officials at MD-NCST game PURPOSELY screwed over NCST..on a HIGHLY DUBIOUS 4th down play that would have given NCST the ball and 1st Down for a potentially game-tying score. The ACC didnt want NCST in the ACC-CG. They wanted FSU in the ACC-CG. ACC “insiders” wanted an
FSU-VT matchup. And more importantly, the “insiders” want FSU to beat VT. An FSU win assures the Orange Bowl of a HUUUUUUUUGE fan turnout for an Orange Bowl that has financially “struggled” in recent years.
Oranege Bowl doesnt waant another Wake Forest vs Louisville game.
They dont want a VT-UCONN game either. THEY WANT FSU. And, they are likely going to get it. FSU:34 VT:30.

BIG12 to Nebraska: “F-U and Goodbye.”
———————————–
So, you dont believe conferences or referees wont “alter” outcomes.
The I give you Neraksa vs the BIG12 and its officiating crews.

If you thought Nebraska got screwed by the BIG12 agaisnt Texas in the 2009 BIG12-CG, I offer up the even bigger screwjob by the BIG12 officials in last weeks Nebraska-TXAM game. 16 Nebraska penalties for 145 yards, and only 2 penalties for TXAM. Even Barnhart admitted on TV that the game was an OBVIOUS screwjob by the BIG12 agaisnt Nebraska.

Now, if you thought THAT was a screwjob, then look here folks, in the BIG12-CG game, Nebraska vs Oklahome, you will likely see the
MOST-BLATANT screwjob in the history of college football. EVER.

There’s simply NO WAY the BIG12 it going to let Nebraska take home the BIG12-CG trophy. ANY AND ALL STEPS will be taklen to prevent it.

Think that sounds crazy. Again, Barnhart himself said on TV that a royal screwjob against Nebraska is practically guaranteed in
the BIG12-CG. Be sure to set your TIVO. Its gonna be a “classic.”

Lots of talk about play-calling on here today. As I’ve said before, that is by far the most overrated part of the game from a fan’s perspective. Noticed that a couple said they could guess the plays 75% of the time. Two things on that:

1- No you can’t. You might call “run” or “pass” and get it right based on the strong side of the formation and/or DnD, but that doesn’t mean you are calling the play. Most colleges will have four or five different “run left” plays with different blocking schemes out of every formation.

2- Guess what? As a playcaller you WANT the defense to “guess right” 75% of the time. You know why? Those 25% that are left are known as your “explosive plays.” You show a formation on 1n10 and run the same way out of it three times for the one time that you pull that ball out of his belly and chuck it. You spread the field and throw it three straight times so you can get a big gain on a draw. Why do you think fake Fg’s and onsides kicks work better in situations that don’t really call for them? Because you kick it 95% of the time in those situations.

Bottom line for me is that proper execution will create a successful play even if the defense guesses right. Good blocking will get you 3-4 yards on a run. Good pass pro, routes, and quarterbacking will get you completions on pass plays. This applies no matter how good the defense is at “guessing.”

Not really. Saban came in with a pedigree, is working on his fourth consecutive top 10 class (and possibly his second #1 class in four years), and had a good season in his third year, losing only to the two SEC division winners and LSU on the road by three. Next season looks promising as well, with loads of young talent returning including a preseason Heisman Hopeful in Trent Richardson. Aubie brought in two academic cheaters from the juco ranks in Cam and Fairley and will be left in ruins when they leave along with four senior OL, the MLB, and 19 other seniors.

Mark Emmert has shown his hand and now we know how the NCAA will cover it’s collective tail in the continuing Cam Newton soup opera: by closing a loophole that is self created by the ruling they just made, when, in fact, they could have brought clarity to the rule simply by ruling Cam Newton ineligible for the actions of someone who by every definition has to deemed as acting on his behalf… and now will be in future (after Cam plays for BCS title and wins the Heisman). My only question is, will this be called the “Cam Newton Rule” or the “Cecil Newton Rule”?

Bama dude, your assertion that Auburn will be 6-6 next year is based on nothing more than your all-consuming hatred of Auburn. I really wasn’t expecting an real answer from you, I just wanted to see how you’d spin it to be pro-Alabama.

BTW, didn’t Terrence Cody come to Alabama from the juco ranks?

1- No, my assertion that Aubie will be 6-6 is based on the schedule and returning talent. Here’s how I expect them to get there:

4-0 against Ole Miss and three patsies at home
1-4 at UGA, Clemson, Arky, LSU, and USCe
1-2 vs. Florida, Bama, Missy State at home

They Cam, Fairley, four starting OL, Bynes, and 19 other seniors. They could do as well as 8-4 or as poorly as 5-7 imo, but I look for 6-6.

2- Yes, Cody did. He was a very good player but not a Heisman Trophy candidate like Cam and we had other players around him on D so he didn’t stand out like Fairley. He also wasn’t involved in cheating scandals like Cam and Fairley. Basically, Aubie loses at least four or five without those two guys this year even with the senior leadership.

Wrong again Scott they may know that Rogers & Cecil Newton are “dirty” but so far not 1 shred of evidence has been produced to incriminate AUat all. Nothing is being “swept under the rug”. If they had dirt on AU believe me they would have found it by now. Coming so soon after the Reggie Bush/USC debacle they would love to try to make an example of an SEC team but the evidence simply isn’t there tying Auburn to this whatsoever.

10/22 at LSU
10/29 vs. Ole Miss

Good. Luck.

What the NCAA is trying to prevent with this ruling is the”cry wolf” scenario. Now every time a prospect spurns your school and signs with a rival team there will be hundreds of “Kenny Rogers or John Bond’s” out there looking to discredit that prospect. For example: An AU recruiter is recruiting Player X. Player X is down to AU and Bama, then he chooses the Tide. Then the recruiter runs to the NCAA with “allegations” that X or a member of his family tried to solicit money from him b/c he felt he broke his promise and signed with the Tide. That would open the door to all kinds of false allegations flying every which way and recruiting wars will get MIGHTY UGLY. Anyone who knows the NCAA knows they may be greedy but lenient they are not. They will use the hammer if they have proof believe that.

BAMA Dude,

Fair points. Not claiming to be an offensive genius by any stretch of the imagination, but when I said you could guess the play 75% of the time, I did mean more than run or pass. That’s what was infuriating about the Gators. I watched them all year (well except for the 4th quarter against FSU which I admittedly turned off) and by the LSU game was able to do that. I’ll save you the script, but I promise by personnel, down, and formation you could pick out the play and/or the route. It was really sad. And with the other 25% unfortunately they weren’t the explosive plays you describe, but bubble screens, swing passes or options with John Brantley. Yet another point of contention with Gator fans.

As far as comparing them to the 08 Gators, I don’t think that’s apples to apples. Compare them to 2009 and I think you’re point stands. People knew what was coming last year and just couldn’t stop it. 2007 and 2008 in my opinion were legit offenses that could beat you a bunch of different ways and actually kept defenses off balance with play calling. Consequently 09 is when Addazio took over which is why he takes heat from Gator Nation. He effectively took a ferrari and drove it like a minivan.

I’m with you on Brantley. No question that it’s coaching malpractice to have a guy running a play that is ill-suited to his ability. But the bubble screens and screen passes are designed to get the ball on the edge quickly but also roll the DBs up so you can throw it over them. By 51ML: “…receives or agrees to receive, directly or indirectly, any aid or assistance beyond or in addition to that …”
There’s your problem, 51 ML. In order to “agree to receive” an offer has to be made. Since MSU made no offer, there was no agreement to receive. Even Cecil Newton can’t agree to receive something that wasn’t offered to him

And Joey, up there a bit, says “Pat Dye was forced to dissociate himself from Auburn….” Wrong. Pat Dye has maintained an office and has been employed by Auburn University, without any sort of break, since he resigned from the position of head Football Coach in 1992. Note the ‘resigned” part. Dye was not forced to stop coaching Auburn, he quit coaching and assumed the position of adviser by mutual agreement..

I don’t think I’ve ever seen so much bad information about something in my entire life. Here’s a recent quote for you:

Auburn linebacker Josh Bynes to a reporter Wednesday: “If we told you the truth you wouldn’t print it. The truth doesn’t sell.”

Predictions from a sentimental fool —-

1. It was once said of Steve Spurrier that if he were blindfolded, bound and facing a firing squad, he would be a favorite to escape. Auburn has a great offense led by Cam Newton. Kid can throw and tuck it and run. Spurrier has finally coached Steven Garcia to not make obvious mistakes and not try win games by himself. Lattimore will be a legitimate Heisman contender next year. This game should turn on the ability of these two defenses to adapt to the opposing offenses, but this game has already been played this year. The history of same-season rematches is not a good one for the underdog. My heart says pick the Evil Genius, but my head tells me Tigers 35-24.

2. Virginia Tech vs. Florida State? Virginia Tech 28-21. The Seminoles peaked emotionally last week. After suffering two strange upsets to start the 2010 season, the Hokies have score no fewer than 28 points per game during their 10-game winning streak.

3. Nebraska over Oklahoma, 31-28, on the playing-over-their-heads strength of their Cornhuskers’ anger. If the BIG XII refs call another game like they did against Texas A&M, there will be a riot on the field, in the stands and on the street.

4. Oregon vs Oregon State? Ducks vs. Beavers? I love those fearsome water creature nicknames. LOL My money is on the fighting Waterfowl, 35-17.

5. In a battle of the not-so-traditional powers, Connecticut vs. South Florida? No money on this game because I haven’t followed these two teams all season and I don’t have a clue, but U Conn seems to have the Big Mo for my wild-a** guess. Huskies by 7.

Good luck to you and the teams for whom you cheer, and may the best teams win. (They usually do.)

Actually, 2011. And of course we’re looking to next year. The season is over for us except for the bowl game. And Saban’s “following up championships with blah, blah” is garbage. They lost the Aubie and LSU games by 4 points combined. Win those two and they’re playing for revenge and a BCSCG trip tomorrow. Alas, they didn’t, but not a bad season any way you slice it.

As far as the Cecil Newton business, Auburn is accused of no wrongdoing. Just like Albert Means couldn’t play at UAT but was ok at Memphis, Cam probably couldn’t play at MSU but is fine at Auburn.

No, there is no evidence that Auburn paid. That this had to do with his recruitment to MSU and not Auburn was reported from the jump. Agreed. The big problem is they didn’t run the streak routes or any long pass routes with any consistency. Is that due to protection issues? Absolutely, but not much was done to aid that. Instead of keeping RB’s in or a blocking TE, the response was “the O line is fine, we’re just encountering some new blitz schemes.”

I don’t disagree with any of your points or analysis. What I would contend however is that the principles and counters/setups you describe were not found in the Gator offense this year. The OC decided to play “on schedule” and effectively shrunk the amount of field the defense had to defend due to threat, real or perceived.

In any event, thanks for the solid football talk. It’s my hope that the Gators get someone in that position that can implement the basic concepts of offensive play that even us casual fans pick up on. Eagletired…irrelevant is subjective. Will they play for an SEC title game or a NC? I don’t know. Will they have a winning season? Probably.

Chiszk seems to know what he is doing.

What makes you say that? He has a recruting class ranked in the 20s his first year, number one his second year, then back to the 20s so far this year with very few top recruits even considering Aubie.

Very, very rarely has a single player been responsible for a larger percentage of an undefeated team’s offense. His numbers are Tebow-esque, and the other players get big plays because the defense has to key on his running game. Also, go back and name me the last Heisman Trophy candidate that played one year at a school, his third school in three years. Like I said, lottery stuff.

OU-Nebraska will be a bittersweet game to watch. Growing up this used to be one of the top 3 season ending rivalries along with Bama-AU, Ohio State-Michgan and the then big 8 conference and subsequent orange bowl trip was always decided with this game- as well as overall national title implications in most years.

The new big 12 format largely reduced the rivalry and Neb going to the big 10 ends it. Very sad to see one of the nation’s greatest rivalries come to an end.

No one knows what’s eventually going to become of the NCAA and FBI investigation and yes- it is still ongoing. These investigations take time and the whole thing isn’t over yet. But you should chill because it just may end up that one day Cam Newton could be the most hated name on the AU campus if its found he knew what dad was doing and AU gets pounded with USC style probation. Just something to think about. A lot could happen in the ongoing investigation- devastating probation, a vacated national title and vacated wins, and in 2 years you may dread the day he signed with AU. I seriously doubt in 2 years you will think the cash n carry plan was worth it.

Now I’m usually the last one to play the “race card”( In fact I despise when Jesse Jackson & the “Rev Al” do it) but after re-reading these comments this morning it can’t be denied…. there is an underlying racist bent to a lot of these haters. The fact that Cam has been arrested before doesn’t help either. I’m not saying this is ALL “Race based” but re-read some of the remarks and tell me u don’t see it. Folks see a black kid with an arrest on his record & they automatically scream “GUILTY” before all the facts have even come out yet! Here's the thing

December 4th, 2010
10:20 am

If South Carolina wins this game, they will be celebrated as heroes throughout college football fandom – Auburn Family© excluded, of course. Not simply because of the significance of South Carolina rising above their historical position as a middle-tier program in the most powerful football conference in the nation, but because they will have accomplished what the SEC and the NCAA have been unable, or unwilling to do – put the brakes on a thus far unbridled run toward yet another tainted BCS National Championship.

Everyone knew back in 2004 that Reggie Bush was a professional ringer competing in an ostensibly amateur league. Ironically, nobody was more disgusted by this perceived injustice than the Auburn fan-base, as USC’s participation in the BCSCG destroyed any chance that Auburn had to win the Crystal Trophy. The NCAA finally, four years later, exposed the truth and placed their asterisks in the record books, but justice so profoundly delayed is justice denied. And so, the University of South Carolina now finds itself in the unique position of being supported by a huge fan-base that would normally not know, nor care about the outcome of their football season. It is not impossible for South Carolina to prevail in this contest, however, they are certainly playing the part of David to Auburn’s Goliath.

As for Auburn, even if they lose today’s game, this season will represent a high point in the history of their football program. They have already pocketed a rare undefeated regular season. This a difficult task even for teams such as TCU, who play a decidedly less grueling regular season schedule. To accomplish an undefeated season in the SEC is a truly major accomplishment. Add to that the come from behind victory in their final regular season game, over their cross-state rivals, in their own home stadium, and this season has already provided Auburn fans with success beyond their wildest dreams.

Considering the state of SEC Eastern Division football this season, and the fact that a win for South Carolina will not propel them to the BCSCG, this game wouldn’t normally be seen as a particularly outstanding SECCG. And yet, college football fans across the nation will be watching and waiting for a miracle to occur. If the sheer numbers of fans of the “underdog” can will a team to perform beyond their own natural potential, then today’s game might well result in Goliath crashing to the ground in defeat. Only time will tell.

I Agree

December 4th, 2010
10:28 am

South Carolina might not have a shot at the National Championship, but they would be the most admired team in college football if they managed to pull off the upset today and remove the stain of Cecil Newton’s “ministry” from the BCS Championship Game.

“The facts in this case, as we understand them, are that the student-athlete’s father, without knowledge of the student-athlete, solicited improper payments (which were rejected) from an institution the young man did not attend, and that the institution where the young man is enrolled was not involved,” Bloom told the AP in an e-mail.

We have gone from the seven circles of Hell tome to oh gee-whiz Auburn deserves it all. “The controversy surrounding Auburn quarterback Cam Newton, which has subsided just a little with a controversial ruling by the NCAA that he is eligible.” Subsided just a little? Are you joking me? The ruling made the controversy worse. Auburn and Cam Newton have a darker cloud over their heads than they ever have before because now, everyone (well except those Auburn fans too Cam-blinded to see) knows that exactly what was runoured to have happened did indeed happen. The truth is there in black and white and all it takes is some common sense to see it. Hard evidence be damned. Cam knows exactly what happened. AUin ATL

I had to stop and see what was going on inside the short bus. More of the same I see. Ok ok I’ll stop.

Chill out guys. Enjoy the game. Personally, I care more about the game of football than the rules and backdoor stuff whether is at AU, USC or gasp, even UGA. If AU paid Newton or the whole team for that matter. Its still 11 on 11 in the field playing by the same rules with the same refs. You still have to run, block and tackle. A player does not get any better or worse if he breaks recruiting rules, nor does it affect the play and coaching of either team.

We can argue til the cows come home on the purity or lack therof in college football (and spare me, its not just AU that doesnt recruit choir boys), at the end of the day we all care because we like college football. I get that rules need to be in place and enforced to try to mantain at least a sense of amateurism. In this case it appears that AU got a pass for one player whom most haven’t even heard of until midseason (no one dreamed that he was heisman material until the USC game, heck he wasnt even named starting QB until the very end).

The NCAA will put out more clarifications and maybe change the wording of some rules. Its not the end of college football as we know it guys. The NCAA will bring the hammer down on AU or any program (SEC or not) is found to have given improper benefits. I know right now we look like death star with cam newton as darth vader in cahoots with the NCAA and SEC, I promise you, AU has been on the receiving end of the NCAA hammer. It will suffer it again if proven guilty. But as of now, AU is not even being investigated. I don’t believe that Newton is a saint by any stretch of the imagination. I do think he is the best player in college football today.

I get the resentment. AU was on the other side of it when SC (w/Bush) won in 2004. When AU went undefeated and got no shot beacuse of the polls. We whined for a long time. AU was13-0, doesn’t happen very often. UGA is 6-6 this year. Whether rules were broken at AU or not nor the NCAA has anything to with that. Stop worrying about AU or NCAA, talk about defense, common opponents, coaching changes, Xs and Os whatever. What happens if AU loses? TCU? thats more fun.

Stop quoting the rules and speculating on conspiracy theories. It’s common sense that the lunatic fringe of the AU fan base will see it one way and the rest of the lunatic fringe another.

As I watched the SEC championship game, I got more and more disgusted. Why?

Because the leadership at the University of Georgia has let the State of Georgia, all its alumni, and its huge fan base down for a long, long time. We UGA fans like to think we are a top tier football school. Wrong. We haven’t really been top tier since Herschel Walker went to the old USFL. The leadership has brought mediocre coaches and staff in here ever since. With such a huge talent pool in Georgia, a blind idiot could win at UGA.

Just ponder for a moment that Mark Richt graded Cam Newton as a tight end. Cam didn’t fit into his “system.” That just about says it all. Richt and his coaching staff are a disgrace, a ripoff to those who pay their bloated salaries. Analyze whether Rodney Garner is really a good recruiter. Does the staff actually assess the talent, or just read who’s supposed to be good with the scouting agencies? I think the latter. How many of our 5-star recruits have really performed? Very few. It is combination of sorry assessment of talent plus sorry coaching once the recruits arrived in Athens.
We are now stuck in the cellar of the SEC until Richt and his entire gang are thrown out of town. Get used to the Music City Bowl, the Liberty Bowl. Florida will continue to have their way with us, as will Auburn, Alabama, Tennessee, and probably South Carolina, Arkansas and even Kentucky. We couldn’t even beat lowly Colorado this year. There is absolutely no discipline. We had more arrests than touchdowns this year. The players ran out of gas in the third quarter because they were not disciplined enough to get in shape. They liked to rap and break dance in between plays rather than get focused to win, Soldier Boy…
I am totally disgusted. Totally, totally disguested. What does it take to get Richt moved out?

JP Tigers, no one called Tebow a thug because he isn’t. A cornball, definitely. A bit of a religious nut, possibly. But not by any stretch of the imagination a thug.

Newton on the other hand is clearly a shady character, I don’t see how even the biggest Auburn fan can deny that. Not sure what race has to do with that. If a white kid stole something, cheated on tests, had multiple traffic citations, and was linked to NCAA violations, I don’t think he would be spared the bloggers’ wrath.

Actually Ed on this blog he probably would if he played for thUGA. Ya’ll seem to conviently “forget” the multiple rap sheets & arrests that have piled up in Athens over thye past few years. Read Snoop’s post he makes some great points about what discipline can mean to a program. What has Cam done AT AUBURN that is “shady? Absolutely NOTHING! If you are telling me race doesn’t have to do with this hatred, you must not live in the south. Wasn’t too long ago when folks said blacks “weren’t smart enough” to play QB! Name 1 black QB that has won the Heisman from the SEC? U can’t b/c Cam is the first. I have PERSONALLY heard some of my friends who are UGA fans call the kid racial slurs, and u say it’s not a factor? PLEASE!!

Just because Auburn is a backward little redneck bastion of racism doesn’t mean that the rest of the South is. Pull the beam from your own eye before you begin to speculate about splinters in the eyes of others.

snoop dog, richt would’ve never recruited this thug, Scam was too much of a crook for UF, why would we want him. We have enough problems without the good Bishop Newton getting involved. This thing at AU will eventually turn into a big black eye, for AU, for the SEC, and for the BCS. The said part is, the AU players (except for Cam) will have an incredible effort thrown out the window.

A quick look at other blogs this morning reveals that fans from all over the country, at least fifty other schools, every other conference, all feel that the NCAA gave SCam a kitchen pass. You AU folks condemning UGA fans is a joke. Everyone knows the deal here . . . SEC and NCAA bailing out the title game, at any cost. Cam is awesome. I, a UGA fan, love the UGA AU game, its a great rivalry. I always pull for the SEC champ, period. Until this year. Cheating is cheating and the truth will pull out. Its not just bama or dawg fans, its football fans who know a SCAM when they see one. And those guys that played with him, they will get the worst of this when its all over. Go Ducks!

“Auburn beats South Carolina in an instant classic”
The first time they met the score was AU 35 – 27
The spread was a mind boggling 5
Auburn squeaks by 56 – 17…truly an “INSTANT CLASSIC”

Really, you thought that this would be a squeaker, that AU would have to come from behind in the 2nd half. If $cam had not been given a free bill of health and actually had something hanging over his head, then yes maybe it would have been tighter. But, he was given the Keys to the City, given the ol’ attaboy, the good to go, whatever. Only a SC die hard homer could have thought that this would have been an Instant Classic, a squeaker, a come from behind victory, but “Mr. College Football” how could you have fallen for such?

You must not have spent much time on this blog if you think that. A lot of Georgia fans, myself included, have expressed our unhappiness with the calibre of athlete that Richt has brought to UGA, even calling for Richt to be fired if he can’t get his players under control.

Taking race and rooting interest out of the equation for a moment, are you really denying that there are serious problems with Cam Newton and his family.

If Cam Newton wasn’t leading Auburn to a dream season, would you let him anywhere near your home? Would you trust him with a family member, or your valuable possessions?

Of course not. But he’s the SEC Champion quarterback and soon-to-be Heisman Trophy winner, and he wears an Auburn uniform! So of course he’s as pure as snow, as long as he’s enrolled in school. What a crock.

Don’t lecture me or anyone else about race, you just sound silly.
