Auburn beats South Carolina in an instant classic

I can’t believe that I’m writing this, but here is the last Fearless Friday Forecast for the 2010 regular season:

1. Auburn vs. South Carolina (SEC championship): I didn’t think the SEC championship game could ever get better than the last two between Florida and Alabama. In both cases the winner knew it would be in the BCS championship game. But this game is just as big because of some additional storylines:

**–The controversy surrounding Auburn quarterback Cam Newton, which has subsided just a little with a controversial ruling by the NCAA that he is eligible.

**–Auburn having a shot to play for its first national championship since 1957 and perhaps getting payback for 2004, when the Tigers went 13-0 and didn’t a chance to play for the crystal football.

**–Auburn having a chance to give the SEC its fifth straight national championship.

To those good story lines you add the return of Steve Spurrier–The Head Ball Coach–to the game for the first time in 10 years. He won it six times as a Florida Gator and now has the Gamecocks in Atlanta for the first time ever.

If Spurrier wins he would have seven SEC championships and would be second on the all-time list only to Alabama’s Bear Bryant.

This is great stuff. The game? If South Carolina can run the ball a little bit, then this will be a nail-biter until the very end. And there is something special about this Auburn team, which has rallied from double-digit deficits four times this season to win. The Tigers won’t fall behind by double digits but it will fall behind and then rally in the fourth quarter. The final, in an instant classic: Auburn 35, South Carolina 31.

2. Virginia Tech vs. Florida State (ACC championship, Charlotte): If Virginia Tech (10-2) had not stumbled out of the gate at 0-2 with close losses to Boise State (33-30) and James Madison (21-16) the Hokies would be in the national championship discussion right now. But now Virginia Tech has won 10 straight games and will be trying to win its fourth ACC championship in seven years of membership. Florida State (9-3) made huge strides under first-year coach Jimbo Fisher, who replaced the legend, Bobby Bowden. I like the Hokies in a close game. Virginia Tech 28, Florida State 24.

3. Oklahoma vs. Nebraska (Big 12 championship, Arlington, Tex.): It’s kind of fitting that Nebraska’s last game as a member of the Big 12 should be against Oklahoma. For so long these old rivals played “The” game in the old Big Eight. And when the Big 12 conference was formed the yearly battle went away. The game features two old friends as coaches–Oklahoma’s Bob Stoops and Nebraska’s Bo Pelini. They both grew up in Youngstown, Ohio and played at Cardinal Mooney High School. I’m going with Oklahoma because the Sooners have the hot quarterback. Landry Jones has thrown for 1,853 yards and 17 touchdowns in his last five games. Oklahoma 27, Nebraska 21.

4. Oregon at Oregon State (The Civil War): It’s very simple for No. 2 Oregon. Go to Corvallis and win and the Ducks have a date with somebody for the BCS national championship on Jan. 10. The Ducks missed a big bullet on Nov. 13 when they won at California 15-13. The rest of their opponents could not keep up with a fast-break offense that leads the nation in scoring (50.45 points per game). This game will be close for a half because of the emotion involved. But the Ducks wear you down with a relentless pace. Oregon 42, Oregon State 21.

5. Connecticut at South Florida: Randy Edsall, a former assistant coach at Georgia Tech, did one of the best coaching jobs ever in 2009 when he held his team together after the death of popular player Jasper Howard. That Connecticut team won its last four games, including a victory over South Carolina in a bowl game. This season the Huskies started 3-4 overall and 0-2 in the Big East. If they can win at South Florida (7-4) on Saturday, Connecticut will go to the first BCS Bowl (Fiesta) in school history. USF is coached by Skip Holtz, who was the head coach at UConn from 1994-98. The Bulls are coming off a 23-20 upset of Miami last week. Connecticut 21, USF 20.

Jimbo was worried about he weather in Charlotte…he should be. All the warm weather just went south and there is a possibility of showers late. FSU will freeze and VT will win.

Remember superior benched Garcia and used his freshman…for two picks. Won’t happen again. Too bad for Aub.

The AU-South Carolina should be a classic that goes down to the wire.

OU-Nebraska will be a bittersweet game to watch. Growing up this used to be one of the top 3 season ending rivalries along with Bama-AU, Ohio State-Michgan and the then big 8 conference and subsequent orange bowl trip was always decided with this game- as well as overall national title implications in most years.

The new big 12 format largely reduced the rivalry and Neb going to the big 10 ends it. Very sad to see one of the nation’s greatest rivalries come to an end.

MikeP,

Stating a payment plan (80K at signing, 50K within 30 days, 50K 30 days later) is “agreeing to receive.”

No, it is not. It’s a solicitation. Someone has to say “Ok, I’ll pay” and the other party has to say “Ok, I’ll accept it”. Take the semantics up with lawyer & ex-judge Mike Slive if you wish, but what you stated is not agreeing to receive.

Cam will laughing all the way to the bank with his big fat NFL paycheck? Good for him! Why the hell would anyone begrudge a great player like Cam getting a big NFL check?

No one knows what’s eventually going to become of the NCAA and FBI investigation and yes- it is still ongoing. These investigations take time and the whole thing isn’t over yet. But you should chill because it just may end up that one day Cam Newton could be the most hated name on the AU campus if its found he knew what dad was doing and AU gets pounded with USC style probation. Just something to think about. A lot could happen in the ongoing investigation- devastating probation, a vacated national title and vacated wins, and in 2 years you may dread the day he signed with AU. I seriously doubt in 2 years you will think the cash n carry plan was worth it.

Just watched for the first time your show on CSS, and I must disagree with Mr. SEC. He is totally unaware of any of the comments from other blogs on espn or ajc or wherever to think that all the SEC fans are cheering for Auburn. Completely wrong. Tell him to check out comments. Basically everyone is anti-SCAM and Auburn. No one is thinking about how it will effect them in bowls — they just dislike his dishonesty.

Something interesting to think about; If Cam Newton was a WHITE kid from an affluent family, would this level of hatred & vitriol still be directed towards him? Now I’m usually the last one to play the “race card”( In fact I despise when Jesse Jackson & the “Rev Al” do it) but after re-reading these comments this morning it can’t be denied…. there is an underlying racist bent to a lot of these haters. The fact that Cam has been arrested before doesn’t help either. I’m not saying this is ALL “Race based” but re-read some of the remarks and tell me u don’t see it. Folks see a black kid with an arrest on his record & they automatically scream “GUILTY” before all the facts have even come out yet! I know firsthand b/c I live in an area where sadly “tolerance” is not exactly practiced regularly lol WDE!!

Here's the thing

December 4th, 2010

If South Carolina wins this game, they will be celebrated as heroes throughout college football fandom – Auburn Family© excluded, of course. Not simply because of the significance of South Carolina rising above their historical position as a middle-tier program in the most powerful football conference in the nation, but because they will have accomplished what the SEC and the NCAA have been unable, or unwilling to do – put the brakes on a thus far unbridled run toward yet another tainted BCS National Championship.

Everyone knew back in 2004 that Reggie Bush was a professional ringer competing in an ostensibly amateur league. Ironically, nobody was more disgusted by this perceived injustice than the Auburn fan-base, as USC’s participation in the BCSCG destroyed any chance that Auburn had to win the Crystal Trophy. The NCAA finally, four years later, exposed the truth and placed their asterisks in the record books, but justice so profoundly delayed is justice denied. And so, the University of South Carolina now finds itself in the unique position of being supported by a huge fan-base that would normally not know, nor care about the outcome of their football season. It is not impossible for South Carolina to prevail in this contest, however, they are certainly playing the part of David to Auburn’s Goliath.

As for Auburn, even if they lose today’s game, this season will represent a high point in the history of their football program. They have already pocketed a rare undefeated regular season. This a difficult task even for teams such as TCU, who play a decidedly less grueling regular season schedule. To accomplish an undefeated season in the SEC is a truly major accomplishment. Add to that the come from behind victory in their final regular season game, over their cross-state rivals, in their own home stadium, and this season has already provided Auburn fans with success beyond their wildest dreams.

Considering the state of SEC Eastern Division football this season, and the fact that a win for South Carolina will not propel them to the BCSCG, this game wouldn’t normally be seen as a particularly outstanding SECCG. And yet, college football fans across the nation will be watching and waiting for a miracle to occur. If the sheer numbers of fans of the “underdog” can will a team to perform beyond their own natural potential, then today’s game might well result in Goliath crashing to the ground in defeat. Only time will tell.

I Agree

December 4th, 2010
10:28 am

South Carolina might not have a shot at the National Championship, but they would be the most admired team in college football if they managed to pull off the upset today and remove the stain of Cecil Newton’s “ministry” from the BCS Championship Game.

You just made the point I was trying to make. Did they accuse him of cheating or “being a thug”? No they didn’t! I am excited about today too but I was just stating what I feel. If u don’t like it just ignore it but u can’t deny it’s there. We may win on the field today but we need to start winning the war of public opinion or an SEC Title will mean squat. The knives are oot in full force right now, if u wanna bury your head in the sand & wave your pom-poms be my guest. I prefer to play with “a chip” on our shoulder because that’s when we play best. Who else has Auburn paid off besides Cam Neuton’s family? Are the SEC, NCAA, Herbstreit, and other talking heads receiving paybacks or just the churches of these people getting donations? Should other schools start contacting the parents of athletes for Special deals? This is a disgrace to college football! Where’s the money?

I also feel the way Cam has played with all this swirling around him has spoke volumes too. If he had a “guilty” conscience would he have been able to keep it rolling despite knowing he had broke the rules? If he were to win the Heisman next week, what will he say? We will actually be fined if he doesn’t make himself available to the media after this game. Someone needs to start defending him or by the time we hear his side of the story….it won’t matter anymore.
