Spurrier could make history (again) at the Georgia Dome

Nobody asked me but:

1. Steve Spurrier has a chance to make history (again) at the Georgia Dome: The No. 1 story line heading into Saturday’s SEC championship game is whether or not No. 1 Auburn can stay undefeated and give the conference a shot at its fifth straight BCS title.

The No. 2 story line is whether or not Auburn quarterback Cameron Newton, with everything swirling around him, can lead his team to a victory and, in the process, lock up the Heisman Trophy.

Almost lost in this game is that South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier has a chance to win his seventh SEC championship, exactly 10 years after he won his sixth and final one as the head coach at Florida. Spurrier’s seven SEC titles would move him past Vince Dooley and John Vaught on the all-time list. Spurrier would be second only to Bear Bryant who won 14 SEC championships (13 at Alabama, 1 at Kentucky).

For the first time at the SEC championship game, Spurrier is here but is not the headliner. I’ll bet he likes that.

2. TCU is making a good move to the Big East: It’s really a no-brainer. From the start of the 2012 season Gary Patterson and the Horned Frogs will know they are good enough to win the Big East and go to a BCS bowl game. No debate. No having to ask for respect. Win your league and you go. Now TCU has to get serious about men’s basketball and the Big East has to figure out how to stage a conference basketball tournament with 17 teams. Understand that the Big 12 (now at 10 teams) was never going to invite TCU to be a part of the club. The Horned Frogs had to step out and do the best thing for their school.

 3. I’m sorry that Boise State lost. I was hoping that  Boise would go to the Rose Bowl and somehow wind up playing Ohio State in what would be known as “The Little Sisters of the Poor Bowl.” Last week Ohio State president Gordon Gee (the former president at Vanderbilt) said the teams in the Big Ten and SEC deserved a shot at the BCS championship over Boise because “We don’t play the Little Sisters of the Poor.” For about 48 hours the media went just a little batty and then Boise State lost to Nevada Friday night. It was on the same day that Auburn came back from a 24-0 deficit to beat Alabama and Oregon beat Arizona with a strong second half.

So at the end of the day was Gee right? Probably, but I am reminded of something said by the late, great Lewis Grizzard: “Damn, brother, I don’t believe I would have told that.” You may think it. It might even be true. But you don’t say it.

4. Jon Gruden to Miami? Jon Gruden? Did I miss something? What is the facsination with Jon Gruden? Won a Super Bowl. Dynamic personality.  Loved it when he sat down with the quarterbacks (Tebow, McCoy, etc.) in the summer of 2009 and gave them the unvarnished truth. It was compelling television and I watched every minute of it. But somebody has to tell me how Gruden’s skill set translates to college football, which is a completely different game. There is no doubt that Miami will make a big splash and win the press conference if it happens. But I’ve seen too many guys come from pro football (Charlie Weis comes to mind) who believe they are so much smarter than everybody and will be able to just out-scheme people to wins. They believe they can flash a Super Bowl ring and the  recruits come running. It doesn’t work like that.

And let’s get this on the record. Miami  hired Randy Shannonto clean up the program and he did.  While other schools were living on the police blotter, Shannon instilled discipline. Miami’s graduation rate under Shannon was second only to Duke in the ACC. He didn’t win enough games, I get that. But if you’re a Miami fan you need to thank that man for what he did for your school as a player, assistant coach, and head coach.

5. Vanderbilt needs to get serious about football: First of all, Bobby Johnson did a helluva job at Vanderbilt with the resources he had. Yeah, he went 2-10 his last season but under Johnson Vanderbilt was consistently competitive and a tough out. As the years pass Vanderbilt fans will realize how good Johnson really was.  Now Robbie Caldwell, who replaced Johnson last summer, is gone. Vanderbilt has some decisions to make. First of all, spend the money to get a top flight coach and give him the money to hire a top of line staff. In other words, spend the money necessary to give Vanderbilt a reasonable shot. Do that for five years and if it doesn’t work out, you can scale back on the next coaching hire. It’s like Vanderbilt wants to commit to football but doesn’t want to commit at too high a level because it would be, well, unseemly.

But in order to compete in the SEC, you gotta be all in. Vanderbilt ain’t close to being all in when it comes to football.

As an Auburn fan, it sure makes me nervous that the OBC has that much on the line. I am sure we will get SC’s best shot by a lot. I hate it that if we lose, we will have beaten them earlier in the year, have a 12-1 record in the SEC, they will be 10-3, and Carolina will be the champion. Obviously, this is one of those years that as Auburn, you really don’t want the SEC championship game to be played–only have everything to lose. If I am SC I have got everything to gain–that’s just the way it is.

Big Tone, great piece as usual, but I have to disagree regarding TCU to the Big East. They are located in Ft. Worth, TX. Their traveling will be a nightmare. The best thing for them to do since they are located in big XII country, and they are down to 10 teams, is to try and join them first. The move to the Big East just doesn’t make any sense.

Tony, just more of your idiotic rants.

Gee was totally wrong…yet you agree with him. What’s new? Boise schedule is ranked 62…Ohio State’s 64. What an idiot.

The funny thing is Miami is not considering Mark Richt because he doesn’t run a clean enough program to meet Miam’s standards. Hilarious.

The Bs–bcs is the worst and most unfair system ever developed by man and is only supported by idiots like Tony. We need a 16 team playoff and we need to let the athletes decide it on the field…not by some pundit’s idiotic opinion.

Here’s to a South Carolina victory on Saturday.

Facts about Paul Johnson

December 1st, 2010
7:59 am

- He has blown as golden an opportunity as Tech will EVER have to overtake UGA as the premier program in the state, all by losing to a 6-5, and then a 5-6 team. This game is enormous for recruiting in our talent rich state, and we’ve seen the fruits of that with this year’s mediocre “post-ACC Championship” recruiting class.

- I take ZERO heart in the fact we were more competitive in the game than expected. First of all, they are a 5-6 team and tried to give us the game with fumbles, which we promptly returned. Second, we should not be so poor in the first place as to where we are a 14 point dog to a 5-6 team, particularly in the 3rd year of a coach’s regime.

- If Paul Johnson had beaten the two worst UGA teams since Ray Goff, Mark Richt would be OUT OF WORK today.

- Mark Richt would be UNEMPLOYED today merely if Tech had sent Saturday’s game to overtime and won, after all UGA had to do was kneel on the ball. Of course this was not possible, since the unbalanced nature of our offense precludes the development of a credible passing game which can threaten an opponent in a 2 minute scenario. Joe Hamilton, in a Ralph Friedgen offense, would have tied that game on Saturday. Under Paul Johnson, we stumble around and skip footballs into the turf.

- Paul Johnson DOES NOT CARE about the UGA game more than any other. Whenever he is asked about it, there is zero passion. He’ll say something along the lines of “yeah, it’s important to the fans and the players, so it’s important to me,” but he does NOT take the UGA game personally, nor does he identify himself so much as a part of GT, but as a guy paid to coach at GT, and that is very disappointing to me.

- It has long been obvious, as previously mentioned, that this offense is not built to come from behind late in a game. This is something that MUST be addressed, and SHOULD HAVE been addressed after we lost to UGA last year for this very reason. Leading the nation in rushing offense is nice and all, but this offense will need more balance if we ever expect to become a consistently great program.

- Chan never beat UGA, but that does not mean PJ’s performance vs UGA has been up to par. We should always beat them when they are poor as they have been the last two years. As far as I’m concerned, 2-1 vs these three UGA teams should be considered par for a GT coach. Paul Johnson is currently BELOW PAR in regards to his performance in the most important game on our schedule. I will take 2-1 vs the Dogs over 1 championship in a crummy ACC any day!

As to a playoff, cut the current schedule down by one game (removing the weakest opponent or Little Sister of the Poor), then add a first round of playoffs with an 8 team schedule (decided by BCS rankings, coaches polls, pull names out of a hat, I don’t care). Then the remaining four teams do the four big bowls in rotation. In other words Sugar has NC game, then Rose and Orange have semi-finals. Fiesta can have the Little Sisters of the Poor. The next year Sugar sits out, etc. etc. As to the other 35 bowls that only fans from the schools playing watch…#1 who cares? #2 they can still be great recruiting tools #3 the teams get the extra practice and #4 again who cares?

I agree that Randy Shannon got a raw deal from Miami. Honestly it indicates a certain hypocricy from The University of Miami and big time college football as a whole. How can you stress that you want a coach to be the moral compass, hold players accountable on and off the field, promote character, increase graduation rates, but if it is not followed by a conference championship then get out of dodge?! This suggests that it is about winning games and generating revenue and not about building young men and giving them a solid education.

I don’t know how you can even compare the two. Vanderbilt is a class institution that values education over the big $ of athletics. I promise you that there will be no stories of players being paid coming out of Nashville any time soon. I believe Vandy just wants to be competitive, not really worried about winning championships. The SEC needs them around to bring up our conference GPA.

Nice column by you today Tony – some interesting topics.
SC-AU should be a good one. The OBC will have some wrinkles for Auburn.
TCU joining any BCS conference is a no brainer for them – the Big East is the only one that would offer. As far as travel is concerned, TCU has to travel to San Diego (1200 miles) and Laramie (900) now, Once you have to get on a plane does it matter whether it is a 4 hr flight to Syracuse or a 3 hr flight to San Diego?
Tony obviously doesn’t follow basketball. The Big East does not have to organize a 17 team tournament. They don’t have a 16 team tournament now – only the top 12 play at MSG.
Gruden isn’t going to the University of Miami – it is not a good position and they are not going to pay him 1/2 of what he can get in the NFL (or at a college powerhouse for that matter).

If Gruden is going to the U, he obviously he may not understand what he is in for. They have a great brand name but they don’t have the kind of money that is needed to get back to being a powerhouse. It’s a small private school, with an athletic budget similar to GTs, poor facilities and play in a half empty stadium 30 miles from campus.

If Boise can play a schedule as difficult as Auburn’s and go undefeated then they deserve the go to the BCS championship. But they dont, they play an extremely weak schedule. Boise is a good football team, we just couldnt tell how good since they dont play many competitive games. Nevada proved they dont measure up to Oregon or Auburn, or any of the other top five teams. If SC goes to the Sugar and Auburn to the Orange, Alabama and LSU will likely take the Cotton and Capital One slots (each school could end up in either bowl) . Godzilla u obviously know nothing about the Spread offense. U just fit a new guy in and go at it! That’s why I think Cam has been a bit over-rated in the sense that he just was a perfect fit for the spread much like Tebow was at UF.

Unbelievable. You clearly know nothing about football. In fact, you just contradicted yourself- how is Florida doing this year without Tebow? How about Texas without McCoy (and how did they do McCoy’s first year after VY left)? Perhaps you’d like to discuss West Virginia’s first year without Pat White?

Yeah it is easy to put someone into the wpread offense and let ‘em fly…i.e. Brantley at UF comes to mind. I will give it to them…AU has had one heck of a season. Of course Bama had one last year and UF the year before that. In this information age that we live in, I’m not sure you will see the “dynasty” type years that Miami had in the 80’s and FSU had in the 90’s and UF had this decade. Don’t get me wrong, there will be teams with winning records for years and years to come, but undefeated? (Qualifying statement, undefeated in SEC) Not so fast my friend.

The spread offense doesn’t work without a hot-dog quarterback. Even with Cam Newton, Auburn’s offense could not have been as productive as they have this season without the talent and experience that Auburn had on their offensive line. Malzahn will look about as much like an offensive guru next year as Urban Meyer looks this year without Cam and that O-line. He would be wise to accept any offers that come his way while he still enjoys the limelight from this season.

Word around is that the Cotton has indicated that they plan on taking Bama regardless of the outcome. LSU will end up in the Cap One and Arkansas/USCe will take the Sugar and Outback depending on who wins Saturday.

College Football is nothing but a bank to college presidents.

They are all fairly certain that people will continue to shell out huge dollars to see lackluster if not terrible matchups at anytime of the year. At most the best football teams may play 5 or 6 difficult loseable games (see Auburn this year) out of 11. That’s in the BEST conference. In the Big 10 this year you only really needed to be great 2 or 3 times and no one could manage that. Oregon was the same way. Auburn is the only team all year that is undefeated that was consistantly challenged by top competition.

I could CARE LESS who is eventually crowned national champion. When it comes down to December and January I want to see the best teams playing against the best teams. When that actually happens which is exceedingly rare in bowl matchups it is exciting. Bowl Tie In’s are far far more damaging to actual competitive matchups than the BCS.

A few days ago, I really thought the U would offer CMR somewhere around $3mil/year to leave UGA. After discussing this with other insiders I doubt CMR is going to leave and desperately wants to sign a huge class this February and give it a few more shots. He knows a few big players can make all the difference in the world. His selling point is this…. If you want to play immediately please come to UGA, because the depth chart is going to be wide open this summer after AJ and Houston leave..

You want them to start throwing millions of dollars around to improve their football team into a 4-5 win team every year? Face it, Vanderbilt is a great academic school who will have ok athletic teams from time to time. The SEC should like having them because they give some small academic face to the SEC. Here are the big rubs from last Friday:

- Bama’s PA announcer (or some poor flunky) played hurtful songs
said flunky was subsequently fired

- Some Bama fans threw Monopoly Money at a mystified Cam Newton
Cam Newton subsequently threw three TDs against a mystified Bama defense

- Trooper Taylor (who looks like someone rolled him out of the Hood this very morning) was high fiving AU players on the sideline while Greg McElroy was trying to re-establish what planet he was on.
There is no “subsequently” on this one…..just an assistant coach who looks, and acts like a seventh grader

I have a lot of respect for Vandy, but they bring nothing to the table for the SEC…..and yeah…I know they play pretty good basketball.

My biggest issue is: they will never be a competitive team. They’ve done away with the AD position. The argument that their academic standards will always prevent them from competing is bunk. It is something that GaTech, and Stanford (and I think Notre Dame will) have overcome…..but there has to be a grass-roots movement from the entire institution for that to happen.

SC would be in the Sugar and Atlanta? They’re gonna be tired.

3rdN8:”I guess your reasoning for Arkansas not going back to the Cotton Bowl is that the sponsors would not want a rematch?”

Word around is that the Cotton has indicated that they plan on taking Bama regardless of the outcome. LSU will end up in the Cap One and Arkansas/USCe will take the Sugar and Outback depending on who wins Saturday.

You are right about SC. If SC is in the Sugar then Ark probably goes to the Outback.

That’s right 3rdN8. The Hogs and A&M have already played in Cowboys Stadium.

The point of GT was, they choose to leave. They were not booted out or asked to leave as you suggest should happen to Vandy.

If Vandy wishes to leave for more competitive pastures in other conferences fine, that’s their choice. To infer they should heavily invest in football, you and Barnhart need to get your collective heads removed from your butts

The biggest hen house fight of them all is Satdy night in the Bird Dome down in Georgia- a bunch of war eagles from the Plains in Alabama comes in to visit a bunch of fighting roosters from Carolina in a great big fighting ring in Georgia – who woulda thunk this one up?
The War Eagle fliers have shown the Tiger faithful that the direction of flight they took a couple of years ago was the right one. Led by the biggest fighting eagle this side of the Mississippi, the War Eagles are perfect and have their eyes on a championship style bird bath in January –

The fighting roosters from Carolina have a couple of extra sets of spurs attached to their running legs – and they have an old ball coach who keeps slinging those eggs left and right – tryin’ real hard to bust that big ole goose egg off the loss side of the big fightin’ birds from Alabama.

Being the underdog is one thing the fighting chickens from Carolina like – problem is, everyone knows it – ain’t no secrets here – I’m afraid when it’s all said and done, the Carolina roosters will fight like banny roosters but will scatter like chicks in the barnyard when the big birds get done with them – Leonard’s Losers – in a close one South Carolina

There’s a business aspect to higher education in general. Football is but one aspect of it, not the only aspect. And I have to disagree with you, the SEC institutions are known in other circles for much more than athletics. Again, you can’t see the forest for the trees. Football is all you care to see. There’s more at stake than Vandy investing heavily in football to appease your or Barnhart’s warped priorities. There is still a sense of Pride and Honor among the fiercest SEC football fans. 1. If not for the BCS, Spurrier/SC would be the story here. If Cam is dirty, the NCAA needs to throw Auburn under the bus

2. What kind of geography are they teaching at The Athens Day School. Big East ??? TCU needs to be in the Big 12. What about all the other sports and the travel required. How can you expect students, alunmi and parents to follow/sport their team.

3. Boise State as a BCS buster would have been a hoot, but it was great game and win for U of Nevada.

4. Agree with you on this though Gruden could be another Pete Carroll hopefully without the probation. Randy Shannon probably has had a more positive influence on his players than any coach in the ACC/SEC. but it all comes down to the Wins.

5. Maybe Vandy is the one school that has it right and all the others are wrong.

Vandy has their moments on the football field. Not as many apparently as you would like to see but, if you looked in basketball, baseball, softball you would see a different Vandy. The bigger picture here is, what if Vandy wish to kick Bama out out of the SEC because it can’t hold a candle to Vandy or the rest of the conference academically? The point here is, academics do matter

It’s not all football but football is a whale of a money maker for the schools who do it right. Again, the SEC is an athletic conference within the NCAA. Look at a school like Villanova. What is their conference affiliation? Their hoops team plays in the Big East, the football team in the CAA, and the women’s lacrosse in the Patriot League. Tradition has gone by the wayside.

Thanks, Tony for providing us with the answer for the Aflac trivia question during the SEC Champ. game. I can see it now: “Who would Steve Spurrier break a tie with to be in 2nd place overall for most won SEC titles if he wins today?” Yada, yada, yada.

In regards to Vandy, the school has more of a focus on academics than athletics. I thought i read an AJC article awhile back where former SEC coaches talked about how the Vandy athletic dept was under the Dean of Students and they don’t have a real athletic dept like all the state schools in the SEC, etc. If this is true then why would they want to change this line of thinking. While I am a UGA alum, if my kid gets a scholarship to Vandy to play football, I would be happy b/c its a free education at a great school. I consider Vandy much like my wife’s alma matta, W&L. Yeah they have a football program but they don’t live and die by it. Education is their main focus, even though their sports are Div. III (like Emory).

Vandy actually is pretty competitive in football. They lost their coach right before the season. They have good players just not the level or amount of great players that the other schools in the SEC have.

The Vandy alumni aren’t going to be as rabid as other fanbases because frankly they have better things to do, but for what they are Vandy has a solid program. They weren’t great this year but they were able to embarass Houston Nutt anyway.

GTBob

@3rdN8,

Its not so much that Vanderbilt’s academics are hindering the athletic programs, its that it’s not a main focus of the University. Vanderbilt is one of the highest ranked universities in the country, with a pretty large endowment and lots of federal research funding. Trying their hardest to improve their football team isn’t high on the priority list of the staff, faculty, students, or alumni. Nobody goes to Vanderbilt because they are excited about football. Thats where they differ from the other SEC schools. If the SEC wants to give the ACC Vandy for Clemson or Fla St though, I would be all for it.

It takes much more intellect to attend and graduate from Vandy as well as much more cash. The SEC is a better conference because Vandy is a member. I’m not even a Vandy fan. But I do respect Vandy and on any given day Vandy’s football team can beat any team in the SEC. Even if you have 12 powerhouse football teams in the conference, the dynamics of the conference wouldn’t be any different than it is now. NCAA Vultures

I feel sorry for Bama fans having to wait to get vindication for last Saturday’s loss while we ( The NCAA Vultures) drag our feet in the $Cam Newton investigation. I feel sorry for the Auburn fans that the process is slow and that while you’re currently in the throes of exortation and jubulation, this also will eventually come to pass, that Thor’s mighty Hammer will knock a tainted title next to the “other one”, the 1957 model still residing near Toomer’s Corner. We are sad that the Auburn alumni and fans are being dragged to the edge of the cliff only to be pushed off it by the very cheater who led them their.
Just so you know, parts of our investigation are complete amd have been universally known by the public for sometime now, but we confirmed:
A) Cam Newton was NOT enrolled at the University of Florida when he sat with his father and decided not to stay at Florida when Tim Tebow announced he was coming back for his senior season. He was however facing a Student Judiciary Hearing for a cheating scandal that has NOT been confirmed at this moment due to public/student records laws in the state of Florida. We are still waiting for our attorneys motions before the courts to unseal these records to confirm or deny.
B) He DID steal the laptop, he did NOT buy a stolen laptop, as the story circulating goes around. A check of the FACTUAL, er, uh, excuse me, the ACTUAL Police Report can be obtained from the Alacha County Police Department or via the website thesmokinggun.com. Our question was, “why would you buy a stolen laptop out of car when you could’ve saved time and effort by just walking into the room next to yours, where it was, where it came from, and who reported it stolen to begin with, oh yeah, “I bought it out of a car, I didn’t know, some coincidence”, huh?
In summation, the truth may set you free, but it isn’t going to make Auburn fans feel any better when we strip them of the title if they win it. We our QUIETLY hoping that Dark Visor prevails this Saturday, or the Muscovy Ducks. If and when $Cam Newton wins the Heisman, he’ll be speechless, “NO COMMENT”, COMPRENDE HOMBRES?

Okay, lets try the “apples and oranges” business approach. If Vandy were kicked from the SEC and say, Miami were added. Say Miami has a stadium capacity of 120K (I would use GT as an example but nobody can give out 120K free hotdogs and cokes).

Miami comes into the conference with 120K rabid fans. 3-4 years down the road Miami can’t compete well in the SEC and has a losing record for 4 straight years. How many rabid fans does Miami have in year 5? Maybe 60K?

The point here is, the pie is only so big. There is only so much of it to go around and that is the business aspect of it. You don’t create more pie by changing up the conference for the sake of change or adding a team with (currently) good cash flow. Someone will still have a losing record or, they didn’t play a conference schedule

The concept of throwing Vanderbilt out of the SEC because they are uncompetitive in football and that the SEC is all about football just cracks me up.
The people making the decisions in the SEC are the school Presidents and they are trying to make the conference much more of a force academically. They have set up an academic consortium similar to that of the Big 10 (see link below). There is much more money in research grants for the school than from athletics. Kicking out 1 of the only 2 AAU members (along with UF) from the SEC and the school with the 2nd largest research budget (again after UF) is not something that fits with the direction the Presidents are trying to take the conference.

Alabama: The only school to “add” 5 NC’s to their resume. The real NC # is 8 not 13. They have also been put on probation twice in the past decade alone. Also forced to vacate 21 wins from ‘05 to ‘07 and forfeit 9 victories from ‘93. One of the stars from their “92 NC team was Antnio Langham who was later found to be “on the take” & signed with a sports agent. They are currently on probation til 2012 check the facts. AND WE ARE THE CHEATERS????? Yes AU has also ran afoul of the NCAA in the PAST but have no violations IN ALMOST TWENTY YEARS!! We cleaned up our program b/c we simply cannot afford any more trouble! I don’t have a Dawg in this fight, but I don’t think Carolina wins against Auburn. Auburn beat them once and knows the drill. Cam has been unstoppable. Auburn by a touchdown.

If TCU wanted to make a REAL statement, why not join the Big 12. Why did Boise not join the Big 12 rather than to jump to another “little” league? These guys will not get respect until they play a “big boys” schedule. BCS? Forget it – they don’t deserve it. Try shovelling some of this crap in the SEC each week- week after week, or the Big 10, Big 12 or PAC 10? Being the bully on the block with all the little boys doesn’t cut it with me. Play someone your own size – or the size you want to be …

I applaud Vandy for maintaining their high academic standards – they just need to be in another league.

If not for the 90% of ESPN’s college football staff being Big 10 homers, we never would have had to have been subjected to their pathetic performances in any BCS games.

And the bias continues. The Little 11 had their first respectable bowl season showing last year and look what that got them? nearly their entire conference was shoved in the preseason polls this season. It’s unbelievable.

Anybody listening to Richt would believe Bobo ain’t going anywhere. And as far as Malzahn goes, would Aubie pony up $750k to keep him like Bama did for Kirby? I’m not sure. The only reason that move would really make sense for Gus is if he was convinced that Urban might be headed out soon and he got a Jimbo Fisher deal.

The SEC should ditch Vandy and pick up Texas. Vandy can join the Big East which would give them 18 teams after adding TCU. TCU gets a stopover in Nashville after returning from Syracuse. SEC gets the Texas market and keeps the league at a manageable 12 teams. All member SEC teams are large state schools. Think of the matchups: Arkansas – Texas a rivalry from the old Southwest Conf days, Bama – Texas, LSU – Texas, etc. Texas keeps Oklahoma and A & M as top non conference rival games.

What happens at Auburn if/when Malzahn leaves? Chizik has never been an advocate of the spread offense and Auburn has traditionally featured a straight-up power running offense. Bama dude, AU very nearly pulled the upset last year without the said players. We will see if Gator_Fans comment on recruiting at AU holds true. Will they try and raid the “free agent” market again and see if they come up gold. Like I said earlier in other words, AU has just had the once in a lifetime season. Like UGA in 1980.

Bama’s stable is well stocked to compete for the next several years. If Saban reels in another Top 5 class they will be poised to make another run. Bama is stocked at virtually every position, I recognize that as well as a lot of others.

If I were a betting man my money would be on Bama based on what I see on paper. But intangibles have a way of making “huge” differences in college football, and there is no way to predict them. I’ve been bad under the weather since early Monday so my thinking’s not as clear as it probably should be. My opinion is that if Newton and Fairley go, so goes AU. They will be average to good in the SEC but won’t approach Bama. Will be interesting to see how UF rebounds, and how LSU and Arky fare also. USC has another good looking QB coming along. I like what Spurrier has put together over there as well as fear it. College football is beginning to resemble basketball in that there are just to many good atheletes out there for anyone to corner the market. The traditionally lower tier schools can put some good programs on the field and be competitive.

I don’t know Murph, everytime I listen to Richt talk he convinces me he doesn’t really have a clue. He never hits specifics, as to what his needs are, where his weaknesses are. It’s always generalities, i.e. dream team. What we need is “beef”, and talent, on both lines.

I mention Joey Jones quite often because I get to see the body of his work and hear his programs on the radio. He was asked a question by a caller about the offensive line, i.e. possibly being a weakness. His answer was “we need a minimum of 16 to 17 players” on the roster every year to be competive, and cover for injuries. No smoke and mirror bs answers. Bama dude, I suppose one could say that that ruling would be “good news” for the conference for a number of reasons, unless one had a “personal” motive that would like to see Auburn take the hit. Don’t know anyone over here in the great state of Alabama that would fall into that category, do you? My perspective is “good news”, and “glad it’s finally over”. If it is in fact….

There’s no crow to be had DC. The NCAA admits that Cecil and Kenny Rogers tried to shop Cam. They simply don’t have evidence that Cam knew. Yeah, right. Cam left the decision up to his pops but didn’t know pops was trying to get paid? Black eye averted, and that’s obviously all they cared about. Guarantee you he’ll be “encouraged” to go pro.

1, Spurrier is the best coach ever in getting his team ready to play against a team that he really wants to beat. He doesn’t get as focused on that as much he used to, and spends more time on the golf course than a head coach can afford to do. But Garcia is a fine QB, and Alshon Jefferies is an outstanding receiver (underrated a bit from playing in the same conference with Julio Jones and A.J. Green)…plus they have an outstanding running back. I think Auburn will win, because they have a better defense…but I expect it to be a good game.

2. Nobody can blame TCU for moving to a larger conference, especially one with an automatic BCS slot. But I hate to see these huge jerrymandered conferences growing up, and also hate to see good smaller conferences falling apart the way they are.

3. I, too, was hoping for a Boise State – Ohio State matchup.

4. I don’t understand the fascination with Gruden either, but he might be the best option available. Miami can talk all they want about cleaning up the program, but to me they will always be (along with FSU) one of those scum teams.

5. Vanderbilt is about as serious as they’re ever going to get about football, I’m afraid. I think it’s one of those strange “point of pride” things for them, that they’re such a strong academic school they can’t really be competitive in the SEC. Apropos of nothing in particular, I think Mark Richt would be a fine fit there. He’s a clean-cut, nice-looking guy…says the right things, and represents the university real well. Also, he’s a good recruiter, so he’d probably get a few kids there that Vandy might not get otherwise. Don’t think he’d get $3 million a year there, but it’s something to think about. (Hint, Hint!)

I’ll say it again like I’ve been saying Auburn has done nothing wrong in this case! Maybe Cecil Newton discussed $$ with MSU maybe he didn’t. That had nothing to do with AU’s recruitment of him. It’s a crying shame that his Daddy may have tried to sell him w/o his knowledge, if that even happened (still not proven). Auburn did the right thing, co-operated with the NCAA, decalared him ineligible for 1 day, then got him re-instated. Living in Mobile, I have to listen to both sides spew their hatred for each other. I know what your feeling, my wife wasn’t going to work on Monday when it was 24 – 0. Just be glad you’re in Cleveland. Well, maybe not !

Next, the Vandy thing – Vandy and Tech ought to trade places – the ACC is more suited to Vandy’s athletic department set up, is primarily a basketball conference and one that Vandy could compete. They aren’t far from the heart of the ACC – so travel would be good for them and they would have a realistic chance to have a winning record in football and all other sports.

The NCAA has found evidence of violations on the part of Cecil Newton and Kenny Rogers regarding amateurism issues. There is currently no evidence to indicate that Cam Newton is ineligible. Back in March 2010, I predicted that
Mike Leach would end up at either Maryland or Miami.

Why Maryland:
Mike Leach is very clsoe personal friends with Kevin Plank, Chairman of UnderArmour Corporation, a Maryland alumnus and former Maryland football player.

Miami:
When Leach left Lubbock, TX he immedaitely went to Key West where he has been for months. Leach is close friends with Donald Trump who strongly recommmend to Miami to hire Leach way back in 2006, instead of promoting Shannon.

Well, here we are, 4 years later, in the post-Shannon era.

Maryland has already agreed to give Ralph Friedgen
one more year at Maryland.

So, its now or never for Miami.

MARK IT DOWN;

Miami will hire Leach…very soon.

Trump is gonna make sure of it this time. Trump has even reportedly sent a written note to the Miami presdient to hire Leach immediately.

Miami Athletics DESPARATELY needs LOTS of money,
and Trump has plenty of it.

If Miami hires Leach, Trump will likely donate tens of millions
of BADLY needed dollars to the Miami Athletics program.

Jon Gruden cant do that for Miami.

So long Gruden. Hello Mike Leach.

Help me to understand Scam is ineligible for one day(a non game day at that) because his father damaged his amateur status but now it’s ok? what a pile of _ _ _ _

Pandora's Box

December 1st, 2010
4:28 pm

The NCAA has just legalized pay for play.

Let’s go along with the NCAA and assume Cam Newton truly had zero knowledge of his father’s actions hard to believe but I’ll play, and if that IS in fact the case what a turd for a father but that’s another story.

What the NCAA has basically done is tell schools, boosters, and player families that as long as the players themselves have no knowledge of their father, brother, coach or whoever recieving money or extra benefits then it’s ok. I have a feeling that we’re going to have more Cam Newton scenarios coming up in the future.

Dad: “Son, you REALLLY should go to ___________University. I think it would be in the family’s errr YOUR best interest” (insert wink & nod)

Fast forward to next fall–Son comes home for the weekend.
Dad:”Hey son, here’s a few hundred bucks for some walking around $$$”
Son: “Thanks Dad! Heeeyyy, where did you get this $$$ I thought times were tough”
Dad: “Oh uhhhh, well I won it playing cash 3 yeah that’s it, and it looks like I’ll be getting a bonus from work next month so if you need more just let me know.” (insert another wink & nod)

And if there weren’t already enough Cecil Newtons around already, the NCAA just created a heck of a lot more.

BAMA

Is everyone forgetting that Cecil is the one who picked Auburn for Cam. Why would a man who would shop his kid around for money suddenly turn it down to go to a different school for free ?

Pandora,

You’re right. This eligibility ruling seems to fly in the face of both the NCAA and SEC bylaws regarding student-athlete amateur status. With that said, the press release makes it clear that the investigation is ongoing and that Cam’s eligibility could yet be revoked pending the final results of the inquiry.

I know that this case is special because of the SEC Championship and BCS Championship ramifications, but if this sort of player shopping is allowed to stand then the NCAA should just stop pretending that collegiate athletics are to be considered “amateur” any longer.

Well, I’ll be dam*ed. The NCAA conducted an investigation and made a timely ruling. So, let’s some up the various verdicts:

1. Cecil Newton, man of God? He’s a greedy dirtball who can’t close a deal. Tried to get money for his son’s placement, but received no money, and still got banned from Auburn events. “Dad can still watch my games on TV, and when I get my first NFL contract, I’ll buy him a new church roof . . . or a new church.” Assuming anyone still wants to go to his church. God is not happy with you, sir. You better hope he’s the forgiving father of the New Testament, not the vengeful God of the Torah who turn people into pillars of salt.

2. Former Mississippi State Kenny Rogers? Dirtbag. You just got banned from you alma mater’s locker room and the cheap seats of Scott Stadium. BTW, the NFLPA just called. Apparently, your NFL agent status is about to be revoked. Whoops.

3. Cam Newton? The luckiest guy on the planet. Money makes people do stupid things, son, and your daddy is one of them. I hope former Gator Cam can keep his nose clean until he decides to declare for the NFL Draft. Please don’t disappointt the faith of the Auburn Tigers fabs; they’re still feeling burned from 2004.

4. Bobby Lowder? You’re still a dirtbag even if you weren’t involved in this particular scandal. As my Atlanta Auburn friends always wish: “Don’t go away mad, Bobby. Just go away.”

5. Gene Chizik? The second luckiest man on the planet. Chhizk’s star quarterback, who has a history of petty larceny and alleged academic indiscretions, just dodged the silver bullet that could have ended his college career in disgrace and converted Auburn’s magically unexpected 12-0 season into an 0-12 nightmare. For those of you who don’t know, Chizik was a walk-on for the Florida Gators in the early 1980s. Hopefully, former Gator Chizik learned something from the late unpleasantness involving Florida and the NCAA caused by his former Gators coach, Charley Pell.

6. Dan Mullen? Happy as a clam. His people did what they were supposed to do when Cecil and Kenny tried to sell Cam to Mississippi State: they listened, and then reported the miscreants to the SEC and NCAA. Coach Mullen, the former Gators offensive coordinator, has had something of an unexpectedly magical season, too. A dirtball former player on the margins of his program has just been banned at no real loss to the Bulldogs program.

7. Steve Spurrier? Lost in all this controversy, the Evil Genius has dethroned his beloved Gators, upset the reigning BCS champion Crimson Tide, thumped the Dawgs and Vols, derfeated his current in-state rival and taken his second set of perennial also-rans to the SEC Championship Game. Does anyone else foolishly believe the former King Gator can’t coach in the SEC? And don’t think for a moment that the Old Ball Coach doesn’t believe he can’t beat Auburn—-he’s Steve Spurrier, damn it.

8. Urban Meyer? Sure, you lost a potential Heisman candidate as your future quarterback, and your team is 7-5, but look at the bright side. At least, you won’t have to bench one of your star players for stealing a computer the week before the SEC championship. That should help keep you from an anxiety attack, right?

Is it just me, or do there seem to be an awful lot of former Gators with something to lose from this mess? Well, that’s how I see it anyhow. Either way, a former Gator is going to be the head coach of the 2010 SEC championship football team. We find our silver lining anywhere we can.

Could happen, but unless Vanderbilt starts recruiting top-20 classes, a new Commodores coaching staff of Vince Lombardi, the Bear, Knute Rockne and Jesus couldn’t do better than an 8-win season. Well, unless that last guy calls in some serious favors from his Dad.

“m,”
Seeing your sorry Jackets lose to UGA on Saturday in Athens was fun. Tech really showed up big with about 4,000 fans. What pathetic support, but your coach and team have learned to expect this type of pitiful showing. Watching the basketball Jackets get blown out by a bunch of really smart white boys from Northwestern was priceless. What’s the excuse this time: Northwestern has lower academic standards than Tech. I don’t think so. Tech just plain sucks in every sport!!

To borrow your phrase, “m,” glad it hurts so bad. Now, go back under the rock where you have been hiding.

Wow, South Carolina has a very strong chance to knock off Auburn. In fact, they will. Odds are very much against another SEC team playing for a national title, and Spurrier has a very underrated team who is currently playing lights out. Beating Spurrier twice in the same season is virtually impossible. Just ask Bobby Bowden.
