Spurrier could make history (again) at the Georgia Dome

Nobody asked me but:

1. Steve Spurrier has a chance to make history (again) at the Georgia Dome: The No. 1 story line heading into Saturday’s SEC championship game is whether or not No. 1 Auburn can stay undefeated and give the conference a shot at its fifth straight BCS title.

The No. 2 story line is whether or not Auburn quarterback Cameron Newton, with everything swirling around him, can lead his team to a victory and, in the process, lock up the Heisman Trophy.

Almost lost in this game is that South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier has a chance to win his seventh SEC championship, exactly 10 years after he won his sixth and final one as the head coach at Florida. Spurrier’s seven SEC titles would move him past Vince Dooley and John Vaught on the all-time list. Spurrier would be second only to Bear Bryant who won 14 SEC championships (13 at Alabama, 1 at Kentucky).

For the first time at the SEC championship game, Spurrier is here but is not the headliner. I’ll bet he likes that.

2. TCU is making a good move to the Big East: It’s really a no-brainer. From the start of the 2012 season Gary Patterson and the Horned Frogs will know they are good enough to win the Big East and go to a BCS bowl game. No debate. No having to ask for respect. Win your league and you go. Now TCU has to get serious about men’s basketball and the Big East has to figure out how to stage a conference basketball tournament with 17 teams. Understand that the Big 12 (now at 10 teams) was never going to invite TCU to be a part of the club. The Horned Frogs had to step out and do the best thing for their school.

 3. I’m sorry that Boise State lost. I was hoping that  Boise would go to the Rose Bowl and somehow wind up playing Ohio State in what would be known as “The Little Sisters of the Poor Bowl.” Last week Ohio State president Gordon Gee (the former president at Vanderbilt) said the teams in the Big Ten and SEC deserved a shot at the BCS championship over Boise because “We don’t play the Little Sisters of the Poor.” For about 48 hours the media went just a little batty and then Boise State lost to Nevada Friday night. It was on the same day that Auburn came back from a 24-0 deficit to beat Alabama and Oregon beat Arizona with a strong second half.

So at the end of the day was Gee right? Probably, but I am reminded of something said by the late, great Lewis Grizzard: “Damn, brother, I don’t believe I would have told that.” You may think it. It might even be true. But you don’t say it.

4. Jon Gruden to Miami? Jon Gruden? Did I miss something? What is the facsination with Jon Gruden? Won a Super Bowl. Dynamic personality.  Loved it when he sat down with the quarterbacks (Tebow, McCoy, etc.) in the summer of 2009 and gave them the unvarnished truth. It was compelling television and I watched every minute of it. But somebody has to tell me how Gruden’s skill set translates to college football, which is a completely different game. There is no doubt that Miami will make a big splash and win the press conference if it happens. But I’ve seen too many guys come from pro football (Charlie Weis comes to mind) who believe they are so much smarter than everybody and will be able to just out-scheme people to wins. They believe they can flash a Super Bowl ring and the  recruits come running. It doesn’t work like that.

And let’s get this on the record. Miami  hired Randy Shannonto clean up the program and he did.  While other schools were living on the police blotter, Shannon instilled discipline. Miami’s graduation rate under Shannon was second only to Duke in the ACC. He didn’t win enough games, I get that. But if you’re a Miami fan you need to thank that man for what he did for your school as a player, assistant coach, and head coach.

5. Vanderbilt needs to get serious about football: First of all, Bobby Johnson did a helluva job at Vanderbilt with the resources he had. Yeah, he went 2-10 his last season but under Johnson Vanderbilt was consistently competitive and a tough out. As the years pass Vanderbilt fans will realize how good Johnson really was.  Now Robbie Caldwell, who replaced Johnson last summer, is gone. Vanderbilt has some decisions to make. First of all, spend the money to get a top flight coach and give him the money to hire a top of line staff. In other words, spend the money necessary to give Vanderbilt a reasonable shot. Do that for five years and if it doesn’t work out, you can scale back on the next coaching hire. It’s like Vanderbilt wants to commit to football but doesn’t want to commit at too high a level because it would be, well, unseemly.

But in order to compete in the SEC, you gotta be all in. Vanderbilt ain’t close to being all in when it comes to football.

The most difficult thing to do in CF is win year in and year out. That’s what was so impressive about the U in the 80’s and FSU in the 90’s. When u have a target on your back it makes it a WHOLE diff. ballgame! That’s why we need to learn to be gracious and classy winners as well as losers, something the Mullet nation knows nothing about!

LMAO @ somebody thinking Aubie will have a good season next year. You lose the whole offensive line, Cam, and Fairley. You go on the road to USCe, Clempson, Arky, LSU, and UGA, all of which are gonna be heavily motivated to beat you down for barely eeking out wins against them. You have to play Florida, Missy State, and Bama at home. Ha. Good luck.

Unless Kiehl Frazier can simultaneously play five different positions on the offensive line, then I don’t see him helping the 2011 Auburn offense very much.

TY Bama Fan #2 for including GA in your list of great SEC programs! After so many fans of other teams listing GA as mediocre, nice change!

Don’t know who to pull for AU or USC. Either fan base will be obnoxious for a yr!

On a different note Tony, what happens to Arkansas if SC beats Auburn, which I don’t see happening? Texas A & M has accepted a bid to play in the Cotton Bowl so that would rule the Hogs out there since they have already played there this season.

If SC goes to the Sugar and Auburn to the Orange, Alabama and LSU will likely take the Cotton and Capital One slots (each school could end up in either bowl) . I doubt that SC would go back to the Chick Fil A bowl since they are in Atlanta this week. Would SC go to the Outback and Arkansas fall to Atlanta?

Godzilla u obviously know nothing about the Spread offense. U just fit a new guy in and go at it! That’s why I think Cam has been a bit over-rated in the sense that he just was a perfect fit for the spread much like Tebow was at UF. It’s all about the system that’s why possibly losing Gus Malzahn is the only thing that truly scares me! We need to lock him up stat! I BTW Cam was an inexperienced QB who no1 thought was gonna be that great this year & look what happened lol

JPTiger,

I believe at some point Auburn will have a bad game-for 4 qtrs that is.I think Carolina can force Aurburn to press a little to much.I see Auburn really start to feel the pressure this week while Carolina is playing with alot less pressure. I have doubted Chizik and Auburn many times this year only to be proven wrong.I could very well be proven wrong again, but Im sticking with Spurrier.I think he pulls it off on Sat.Good luck to yall

Bama dude, its going to be a very difficult road..thats why I need/want AU to win it all this year…

But, do you think they will lose all those games next year??…
Arky..losing mullet at qb we shall see if that backup is going to put up those numbers against everyone next year
USC,..im sorry but USC is always hit or miss year in year out…
Clemson…tough stadium…thats about it
LSU…good defense..crap QBs
UGA..losing AJ and offensive line..running backs are overrated ..Murray will have to play like a beast next year…and they will have to fix their defensive flaws..
BAMA…Bama’s 5 stars haven’t really showed their stars this year..we dont know what to expect next year with them..running backs have been shown as “overrated” will they come back or will they play next year to prove people and get their draft board numbers higher..
Florida..not like they were past several years…dont see them fixing everything just yet..
Missy state…UPs and DOWNs

Unbelievable. You clearly know nothing about football. In fact, you just contradicted yourself- how is Florida doing this year without Tebow? How about Texas without McCoy (and how did they do McCoy’s first year after VY left)? Perhaps you’d like to discuss West Virginia’s first year without Pat White?

Yeah it is easy to put someone into the wpread offense and let ‘em fly…i.e. Brantley at UF comes to mind. I will give it to them…AU has had one heck of a season. Of course Bama had one last year and UF the year before that. In this information age that we live in, I’m not sure you will see the “dynasty” type years that Miami had in the 80’s and FSU had in the 90’s and UF had this decade. Don’t get me wrong, there will be teams with winning records for years and years to come, but undefeated? (Qualifying statement, undefeated in SEC) Not so fast my friend.

The spread offense doesn’t work without a hot-dog quarterback. Even with Cam Newton, Auburn’s offense could not have been as productive as they have this season without the talent and experience that Auburn had on their offensive line. Malzahn will look about as much like an offensive guru next year as Urban Meyer looks this year without Cam and that O-line. He would be wise to accept any offers that come his way while he still enjoys the limelight from this season.

Word around is that the Cotton has indicated that they plan on taking Bama regardless of the outcome. LSU will end up in the Cap One and Arkansas/USCe will take the Sugar and Outback depending on who wins Saturday.

DC, Bama’s five stars played like five stars but they also played like first year starters. Mark Ingram started the year with knee surgery and Richardson injured his knee against LSU. It’s more about Aubie having a once in a lifetime deal here with four senior OL, Fairley, and getting Cam to join up with them. Oh yeah, Malzahn is more than likely on his way out too- I have heard he may not even make it to the bowl game. On a related note: Some of the media in the state of Alabama (& a few higher ups in Auburn’s AD) are demanding a formal apology from the University of Alabama’s president, Dr. Whitt, because they believe Cam’s feeling were hurt when two songs were played in BDS last Friday – “Take the Money & Run” and “Son of a Preacher Man”. The young lady resposible was fired from her job at Alabama but that’s not good enough for several that state’s media. No.

Dear Auburn faithful & your faithful media hacks:
You are currently #1 in the country and about to play for the SEC Championship AND YOU ARE WORRIED about two songs played that may have hurt the feelings of your INELIGIBLE QB?!
This is just another example in a plethora of examples, of WHY YOU ARE & ALWAYS WILL BE AUBURN!

You should just stop posting. You are only embarrassing yourself further. Alabama has been running the spread offense for some time now, it simply isn’t their only option. As for sour grapes, I don’t see a lot of Bama fans whining that they won “most of the game” against Auburn. I have only recently stopped hearing that sort of crap about the 2009 Iron Bowl from obnoxious Auburn Fans.

Best of luck in your upcoming games. I’d like to see the SEC win another NC — even if they are being represented by Auburn University.

Good point on swapping Vandy for TCU. Best option I’ve heard yet.
