The Fearless Friday Forecast

I don’t know about you, but I could sure use a break from the Cameron Newton story. So back by popular demand (okay, two guys asked about it) is the Fearless Friday Forecast:

1. Duke at Georgia Tech: Georgia Tech (5-5) needs this one to become bowl eligible with a trip to Georgia coming up next week. The Tech defense had better get some pressure on Duke QB Sean Renfree or this one could be a problem for the Jackets. Georgia Tech 31, Duke 24.

2. Troy at South Carolina: The Gamecocks have already clinched a spot in the SEC championship game and may look a little sloppy in this one. South Carolina 28, Troy 14.

3. Appalachian State at Florida: It will be senior day at Florida but I wonder how excited the Gators (6-4) will be against the Mountaineers (9-1)? Jerry Moore’s team was ranked No. 1 in Division I-AA until they lost their only game to Georgia Southern. Florida 24, Appalachian State 17.

4. Virginia Tech at Miami: Miami is on a little run behind freshman quarterback Stephen Morris. That comes to an end against the Hokies, who clinch the ACC Coastal. Virginia Tech 28, Miami 10.

5. Florida State at Maryland: The Terps have Florida State at home this week and N.C. State at home next week. Win them both and they clinch the ACC Atlantic. I’m picking the Fridge. Maryland 17, Florida State 16.

6. Ole Miss at LSU: Last year was the low water mark for Les Miles as clock mismanagement was all anybody remembered about a 25-23 loss to the Rebels in Oxford. There will be no such issues this time. LSU 35, Ole Miss 10.

7. Arkansas at Mississippi State; Arkansas could be caught looking ahead to a big game with LSU next week. But Ryan Mallett and the Razorback offense is just too good. Arkansas 31 Miss. State 21.

8. Tennessee at Vanderbilt: Tennessee (4-6) can go to a bowl by beating Vandy this week and Kentucky next week. The Vols have beaten the Commodores 26 out of the last 27 meetings. Tennessee 31, Vanderbilt 14.

9. Ohio State at Iowa: Iowa is supposed to go in the tank after losing to Northwestern last week. I just get the feeling that the Hawkeyes have a big game left in them. This week’s Upset Special: Iowa 17, Ohio State 14.

10. Nebraska at Texas A&M: The Aggies (7-3) have won four straight. Three of those have come with a new quarterback in Ryan Tannehill. Another Upset Special: Texas A&M 21, Nebraska 20.

Tony….lots of misses on your picks this week! South Carolina wins by 28+ Troy has absolutely no D…See Fla. International last week. Miami and FSU both win. Ohio State and Nebraska both win. Thus, you will miss 4 picks this week and should have added many more points in another.

I counted only two Eddie Lacy spin moves. The coaching staff must have worked with him all week to eliminate them. He also tripped and fell in the open field twice. As Trent’s backup next season, he will be hard to handle.

I will NOT be surprised when App State beats UF. The only issue is if App State is looking past this game to next week. Don’t laugh. App State begins the FBS playoffs next week and they may be careful with their regulars.

as I see it….Bama has to control the ball. If we punt 3+ times, the situation will become doubtful.

I just don’t see Bama slowing Newton and Co. up. As good as Newton was in their first four games, he is a lot better now. Even the GSU QB (the one that can run) gave Bama some trouble last night.

I’m pretty sure our WRs are better than Auburn’s DBs, but sustaining drives by passing alone is pretty iffy.

I’m hoping McElwain is putting together a game plan that includes Ingram and Richardson both in the back field. Split backs like the old pro sets, using toss sweeps and play action.

BAMA dude

November 19th, 2010
11:14 am

Very few teams can line up from the very beginning of a game and run between the tackles consistently when the other team is stacking the box like crazy. We have Mark Ingram in the backfield and Greg McElroy at QB. Who would you choose to beat you? I know I’d choose McElroy. Even still, you go ahead and pound it in there a few times regardless of the success you have on those plays. Doing so keeps the defense in tight so you can get them on the edges and in the short passing game. Then, when the DBs start giving less cushion, you fake that dive play and go over the top.

Here’s what bothers me most about all of the corrupt booster stories floating around. Many of these guys are business partners, etc..with Bama boosters. Whether fans like it or not, Bama, and AU are sort of joined at the hip. I’m afraid these investigations will prove just that.

I’d hate for either school, or any school for that matter to get in trouble. But I’m becoming convinced there is a real problem here.

It is getting old, but it isn’t going away. The feds got into this thing because of pay-for-play legislation, and I’m starting to believe that it reaches athletics as well.

BAMA dude

November 19th, 2010
11:25 am

Murph, I think the reason for that is that Cam isn’t really the big fish here. The Feds are sniffing around Colonial Bank, presumably to see where the TARP money went. With Colonial Bank and Auburn being as intertwined as Lowder made them, this could go anywhere as it pertains to the University.

The ‘Ole Ball Coach is no better this year than he’s been in recent years. The difference between this 7-3 team and his 5-6 loss teams is that Tennessee, Florida and Georgia are all mediocre at the same time, and Kentucky and Vandy are still Kentucky and Vandy.

Also, an upset of Alabama helps, although they aren’t quite up to their ‘08 and ‘09 standards.

The class of the SEC this year is Auburn and LSU, with honorable mention to Arkansas and Miss St. South Carolina is a 5-3 conference team, nothing more. No better than the 4th or 5th best team in the conference.

Funny thing is, I think they could actually win the SEC Championship game. Auburn’s defense is so porous, all it would take is one off week from the offense for that house of cards to come crumbling down. But winning the SEC this year isn’t much to brag about, I can’t remember when the conference as a whole was weaker.
