The Fearless Friday Forecast

I don’t know about you, but I could sure use a break from the Cameron Newton story. So back by popular demand (okay, two guys asked about it) is the Fearless Friday Forecast:

1. Duke at Georgia Tech: Georgia Tech (5-5) needs this one to become bowl eligible with a trip to Georgia coming up next week. The Tech defense had better get some pressure on Duke QB Sean Renfree or this one could be a problem for the Jackets. Georgia Tech 31, Duke 24.

2. Troy at South Carolina: The Gamecocks have already clinched a spot in the SEC championship game and may look a little sloppy in this one. South Carolina 28, Troy 14.

3. Appalachian State at Florida: It will be senior day at Florida but I wonder how excited the Gators (6-4) will be against the Mountaineers (9-1)? Jerry Moore’s team was ranked No. 1 in Division I-AA until they lost their only game to Georgia Southern. Florida 24, Appalachian State 17.

4. Virginia Tech at Miami: Miami is on a little run behind freshman quarterback Stephen Morris. That comes to an end against the Hokies, who clinch the ACC Coastal. Virginia Tech 28, Miami 10.

5. Florida State at Maryland: The Terps have Florida State at home this week and N.C. State at home next week. Win them both and they clinch the ACC Atlantic. I’m picking the Fridge. Maryland 17, Florida State 16.

6. Ole Miss at LSU: Last year was the low water mark for Les Miles as clock mismanagement was all anybody remembered about a 25-23 loss to the Rebels in Oxford. There will be no such issues this time. LSU 35, Ole Miss 10.

7. Arkansas at Mississippi State; Arkansas could be caught looking ahead to a big game with LSU next week. But Ryan Mallett and the Razorback offense is just too good. Arkansas 31 Miss. State 21.

8. Tennessee at Vanderbilt: Tennessee (4-6) can go to a bowl by beating Vandy this week and Kentucky next week. The Vols have beaten the Commodores 26 out of the last 27 meetings. Tennessee 31, Vanderbilt 14.

9. Ohio State at Iowa: Iowa is supposed to go in the tank after losing to Northwestern last week. I just get the feeling that the Hawkeyes have a big game left in them. This week’s Upset Special: Iowa 17, Ohio State 14.

10. Nebraska at Texas A&M: The Aggies (7-3) have won four straight. Three of those have come with a new quarterback in Ryan Tannehill. Another Upset Special: Texas A&M 21, Nebraska 20.

The pay-for-play stuff is growing legs…..several of them. It isn’t all aimed at Cam Newton or any particular university either. Some guy in Louisiana must have a huge interest in the Newton case, he put together this dissertation on the subject. If you have a couple of hours to kill, it is an interesting read.

Why would Florida “go down to Troy”?

Troy is North of Gainesville, if I’m not mistaken. So then, if they actually wanted to go to Troy for some reason, they’d be going “up” to Troy, wouldn’t they?

I don’t want you driving my car! ;-)

Nebraska over A&M

Have to visit MR SEC to find out that St. Nick says:’Bad for college football’ if Cam Newton can’t play in Iron Bowl. Could not find this in Mr. Football’s work so it is true the SEC rules – nothing else matters and all others are pretenders and frauds like Utah, Oregon,TCU and Boise – geez GMAFB

Buck Futt, I wouldn’t get too carried away. Fact is that Bobby Lowder and Milton McGregor are both being investigated by the FBI. If Lowder goes down you can bet the University will be affected.

What would be an interesting game is if South Carolina was playing the “other Trojans” – the one with Lane Kiffin as head coach.

@ Mr.Football:
Good point. There are more than a few good football teams that have been burned by underestimating Coach Nutt

Did you see last weeks Ole Miss game? He gave up half a hundred to a rag-tag group of true freshmen and some left overs. How can you underestimate a guy like that?

Surely this isn’t the first NCAA investigation that you’ve ever witnessed? The NCAA isn’t going to update the news media on the progress of the investigation until the investigation is completed. Partial leaks and innuendo are all that we’ll get until an official announcement is made. I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for that to happen.

You might be surprised to learn….

Anyway, you might be surprised to learn that many Bama fans (myself included) do not want this investigation to go badly for Auburn. This stuff is bad for everyone. I hope it all goes away before the Iron Bowl, and that AU brings a healthy, FULL roster into BDS.

I still remember all the SEC East fans laughing when

He may not have better players than the rest of the East
but he is a much better coach than all the others.

I don’t disagree with you re: the positive aspects of the Bama-GaState game. I just don’t think those types of games should count as official.

What I’d like to see is the NCCA sanction a “Pre-season” where teams can schedule two games like that to get ready for the real schedule. That way, everyone wins.

T3

GT vs Duke
**********
GT wins in a BEATDOWN.

Miami vs VT
***********
I have previously posted that Miami will DESTROY VT.

And more importantly, VT will be so beat-up after the Miami game
that VT will lose in an upset to UVA in Blacksburg on Nov 27th.

FSU vs Maryland
***************
Maryland lost to Miami 26-21.
FSU obliterated Miami 45-17
FSU wins in a BEATDOWN.

Iowa vs Ohio State
******************
The Big10 WILL DO “anything” necessary to make
sure that Ohio State reaches a BCS bowl game.
Look for LOTS of HOLDING and Pass Interference calls on Iowa.

Nebraska vs TXAM
****************
Big 12 WILL DO “anything” they can to screw Nebraska.
I expect to see Nebraska get screwed again by the Big12
and TXAM to win.

Not even mentioned by Barnhart:

NCST at UNC
***********
A must win for NCST to get a shot at the ACC-CG.

A win for NCST sets up NCST vs Duke on Nov 27th to
determine whether NCST or FSU wins the ACC-Atlantic

Stanford at Cal: The “BIG GAME”
*******************************
Cal almost upset Oregon.
Oregon destroyed Stanford.
Cal might just pull off the biggest upset of the weekend.

When did anyone make the claim that Milton McGregor had a personal relationship with Cam Newton? He’s pretty high up the food chain to play the part of bag man, don’t you think?

I wouldn’t pay too much attention to lawyer’s denials of charges for which their clients have not been accused. It’s probably safe to say that McGregor was not on the grassy knoll the day that JFK was shot either. So what?

3rdn8, they don’t for all intents and purposes. It used to be that FCS games didn’t count at all toward bowl eligibility for the FBS team, but they changed it to allow one win when some mediocre programs started scheduling the patsies of the FBS division instead. The FCS schools obviously didn’t like this because it cost them some big paychecks. To me, it just proves that there are too many bowls.

Lousy weekend for football overall, but take heart: it’s almost over. For one, I don’t want a replay of the season for Ga. Tech or UGA, or Tennessee, my three faves. Let’s look forward to 2011. 3rdN8

Why this is not a very long stretch…..

McGregor is a seedy guy…..that is a documented fact. Even his wife, and granddaughter have verified it.

Mayor Larry Langford amazingly “wins” 500+ jackpots at a McGregor Bingo Casino. Coincidentally, this occurred at a time when McGregor (the seedy) needed Langford’s (the greedy) support for some gambling legislation.

That casino is only 30 miles from all of the loving athletes at AU. McGregor is a AU booster.

None of this proves anything, but it is understandable why these questions are being asked.

I couldn’t agree more. I’d rather see the bowl games require teams to have 8 or more wins to participate and let the other teams schedule their own local, post-season exhibition games so that all of the FBS teams could benefit from the extended practices that now come only with a bowl game.

BAMA dude

Buck Futt,
This is what I would be concerned about if I were an Aubie. Lowder nearly lost the school their SACS accreditation in 2003 because they felt that he was afforded too much power and that his intermingling bank and school business represented significant conflicts of interest. If it’s found that TARP funds were used in any way to fund the Auburn athletic program it will not be a pretty story, and that’s just one of the possibilities.

All will come to pass, good or bad with Auburn. They either cheated…or didn’t……time will tell.

Hey murphy, if you’d paid closer attention to the Newton’s lawyer he said he was one million percent sure that ‘can’ didn’t receive any money…and he said that there ‘was no question’ that Cecil and the wife didn’t either…First of all, why not a million percent sure on momma and daddy instead of the ‘no question’ deflection? And I guess you haven’t heard about the uncle up north someplace – ask him about whether or not ‘he’ got any money. And what ever happened to the two phone calls to Miss State recruiters where, one, Daddy Newton supposedly told ‘em that it was gonna take more than a scholarship and, two, Cam said he wanted to come to MS but that daddy said the money at AU was too big. Did those guys fall off the face of the earth? As for the Newton attorney, he weasel-worded with the best of ‘em, just wish the interviewer knew more about the story so that he could have asked questions that would have painted the guy into a corner…then see what would happen.

Actually, if anyone is interested in the whole Lowder bit here is a story I posted yesterday that gives some details of the investigation that landed Auburn on a one-year SACS probation because of Lowder and his cronies. One year probation is the stiffest penalty SACS imposes short of losing accreditation altogether.
