Auburn’s Nick Fairley will get a lot of scrutiny in Iron Bowl

Nobody asked me but:

1. Nick Fairley will get a lot of scrutiny in the Iron Bowl: I think the SEC office got it right when it didn’t suspend Nick Fairley for the Iron Bowl on Nov. 26. The shot to the back that Fairley put on Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray was way over the line and he was penalized for it. The shot on the knee to Murray was a football play. But at that point I don’t think anybody from Georgia was in the mood to give Fairley the benefit of the doubt.

And please, I  don’t need the emails and the photos and the video that there was rough play on both sides. I don’t need to know that a bunch of Georgia players ran on he field. I get all of that.  Let’s talk about what happens as things move forward.

Because of what happened last Saturday at Jordan-Hare, the dynamic on Fairley has changed. I’m not saying if it is right or wrong. I’m just telling you that it has.

If Fairley puts the same kind of  hit on the Alabama quarterback as he did on Murray, there is decent chance he gets tossed.  Why? Because fair or not, Nick Fairley will be a marked man against Alabama because of what happened against Georgia. The officials, whose No. 1 job is to keep control of the game, won’t let this one get out of control like Georgia-Auburn did at the end.  And if some players have to be tossed to maintain order, so be it.

That’s why I said on Monday that the Auburn coaches need to sit this kid down and have a talk.

2. I don’t understand the uproar over Ole Miss and its 4-6 record: The Rebels were picked to finish last in the SEC West and they are going to finish last in the SEC West. New quarterback Jeremiah Masoli has done his part but Ole Miss is last in the SEC in scoring defense (34.8 points per game). I don’t follow recruiting but I hear that coach Houston Nutt has a very good class lined up. Don’t panic, Ole Miss. The guy has won nine games the past two seasons. Have a little perspective.

3. Until there is some news, we’re going to have a “Cam Free” zone here:  Here is a little bit of news: Media reports surfaced yesterday that the FBI has spoken to former Mississippi State player John Bond about what he knew and when he knew it concerning the Cameron Newton case. But it’s interesting how things tend to move a little more quickly once the feds get involved. Someone made this suggestion to me yesterday: Now that the FBI has decided that this case falls under its jurisdiction, everybody involved in needs to be hauled before a judge and testify under oath. You lie, you go to jail. I like that idea. I believe that would add some much-needed clarity.

4. Pray for the kids from Southern Miss: All this fussing back and forth among adults about a game doesn’t seem so important when three kids are in a hospital and one of them is paralyzed from the  waist down. The three Southern Mississippi football players were shot at a club as the players were celebrating their win over No. 25 Central Florida in the early hours of Sunday morning. One of the players, whose name I won’t give here, is reportedly paralyzed. This is when coaches have to be at their very best. Southern Miss is 7-3 and has a big game with Houston on Saturday. The kids on that team will not want to play and I don’t blame them. It will be hard to get them to focus.

5. I’m a little concerned about that game at Wrigley: Northwestern and Illinois will play at Wrigley Field in Chicago on Saturday. It is a quaint notion but I’ve seen some of the pictures. The back of one end zone is right next to a wall. It looks dangerous to me. Nothing may happen and I hope it doesn’t. But if a kid gets hurt because the venue could not safely accommodate a college football field, somebody’s lawyer is going to be on the phone Sunday morning.

The uproar over Ole Miss is that even if everyone picked them last they should be 6-4 right now and in bowl contention…hard to overlook the two very bad losses they have.

Tony, what I don’t understand about the game at Wrigley is why they aligned the field in the way they did. I’ve seen old aerial photos from when the Bears used to play there, and the field was turned 90 degrees from what it is currently — and there was not an issue about the field running directly into a wall with that configuration.

Has Mike Slive lost control over the SEC? Spearing a player’s spine, using a helmet to cut a player’s chin, and using a helmet to hit someone’s knee are now permitted based on Slive’s decision not to punish the guilty player. Will it take a player being permanently injured before the commissioner finally wakes up? UGA lost a football game Saturday, the SEC office lost all integrity and credibility by its inaction.

Tony (the author), instead of saying “I’ve seen some of the pictures” re: Wrigley, why not just provide a link? (e.g. http://www.clubhousecancer.com/2010/11/danger-looms-in-the-east-endzone-of-wrigley-field-for-northwestern-vs-illinois.html).

Tony (the commenter), Wrigley added stands in left field several years ago, which would prevent the field from being aligned the way it was when the Bears played there.

2. Are they still called the Rebels? Or are they official the Bears now? That will take some getting used to.

Good points Tony.

There will be alot of emotion in the Iron Bowl and the refs will need to establish control from the beginning. I have never seen a rivalry in which the fan bases despise each other as much as this one. Even more than GA-FL.

Ole Miss has been a disappointment nonetheless. They typically have the weakest out of conference schedule of anyone in the SEC and they still lost to Jax State. I’m shocked that they scheduled Boise State to open in 2011.

I don’t care to hear anymore speculation with Newton. At this point I only want to hear the facts when they come out, whatever they may be.

That is really sad about the So. Miss situation. There are bigger things in life such as this and the Nick Bell tragedy.

I agree that Wrigley seems to be a small venue to play a football game in. I believe Gameday will be there too.

The hit by Fairley at the end, which was a late hit that wasn’t penalized, is what started the whole problem at the end of the game. You want to make the argument that it was a football play, fine, I’ll give you that he was still playing all out, but he didn’t get knocked into him and it certainly looks like he aimed his helmet for the knee.

I’m sorry but any teams fans would be upset about that hit. Your telling me that Auburn fans wouldn’t be outraged if one of our guys was involved in that exact same play with the game already decided? He should have been called for another late hit on that play. The official is standing there staring at the play in the background looking right at them. The officials haven’t been quite as bad this year, but they missed that one big time.

I don’t see Justin Houston the SEC sack leader trying to purposely hurt the other teams quarterback.

Tony, Institutionally, Auburn teaches dirty football – been watching it for years and yes you can ask Glenn Dorsey who almost had his multi million dollar per year NFL career ended by Auburn a few years ago – I see it in almost every Auburn FB game I watch so this is nothing new. Nick Fairley is just a bit more blatant than most since I suppose hs is one of those “all in” men of integrity over on the Plains. I’ve had to shut down your TV show twice in the last two weeks since you continue to bring that sniveling weasel Mr. Finebaum on the show. Who the hell outside of Northern Alabama would want to hear what this homer has to say? Please, some objectivity is in order for somebody calling themselves “Mr. Football” – you might have to change that to Mr. Alabama – but the weasel would probably sue you for that one.

Tony, glad to hear that the SEC officials will finaly pay some attention to Fairleys dirty play.

It’s to bad the officials didn’t do their job in the Ga / UA game, it almost turned much uglier and it’s just another example of bias by the $EC officials for the team that’s in position for the MNCG, everybody knew that Fairley had been coached to take the Qb out with dirty hits coming in and the officials watched it happen numerious times.

The Ga / Aub rilvery has always been a classy affair but Fairleys play and the coaches applauding and encouraging it have turned it into something else.

The atmosphere in Sanford stadium will feel much different for next years Ga / Aub game.

Amen Tony you are right about Fairley. The one bad hit fairley did he got flaged for it. The other hit on murrays leg was just football. Ga had 5 personal fouls in this game with the first one being on the first play of the game on rambo. What about all the CHOP BLOCKS ga was putting on fairley FROM THE START OF THE GAME. Ga got called for one and got away with more. Then when jones and the other ga player had fairley on the ground and were punching and kicking him why were they not thrown out of the game they threw the first punch. I was at this game and have watched it 2 times on tv. I see one very bad hit fairley done and he was flaged for it. And when the whole ga bench came on the field. Richt has no control on his team. This game was bad on both sides you cannot just blame auburn but ga will because ga just ga thats the way they are. I bet if fairley played for ga he would be the best player in the world.

Say you you will, but Auburn is this year’s SEC Darling, thy’re going to get all the calls, somtimes it’s Bama, sometimes Florida, sometimes LSU, this year, it’s Auburn. Ben Jones got suspended for a 1/2 for a lesser infraction. Fairley should be BANNED from COLLEGE FOOTBALL, not for ONLY his hits on Murray, he has illegal hits on MULTIPLE QB’s and TOTAL DISREGARD for the HEALTH of a QB.

Refs missed a LOT of calls against Georgia:
1- Onside kick was touched by kicker beforeit went 10 yards
2- Georgia was flagged for 10 penalities (only average 5 a game)
3- Fairley had 3 illegal hits, including a helmet to helmet
4- Newton’s fumble on the goal-line (announcers called it a fumble)
5- Pass interference on Geogia was questionable

Again, I predicted this. been watching football too long in te SEC, i kno their moves before they happen.

Just the Vegas SEC connection.

The Wrigley field alignment is due to the fact that goal posts are no longer placed in the endzone. They had to reconfigure the alignment to allow for a goal posts to be set behind the endzone.

In response to skydawg… you are forgetting that a baseball player can feel where the warning track is and is usually waiting on a fly ball to either gracefully land in their mitt…or have time to play it off the wall. Either case, they have a few seconds to decide whether or not they are going to approach the wall and how they are going to play against it. In football, you have to catch the ball in the air, full speed, while a defender is trying to knock you out of bounds.

In response to those arguing that there isn’t much clearance in NFL stadiums between the endzone and stands… keep in mind that Wrigley’s wall is brick (not padded)… Could lead to some ugly injuries. Just saying…

SEC football is growing old. Here is what we saw Saturday.
- Auburn: Player possibly being paid to play and too much dirty play for it to be just football. They are teaching that.
- Georgia: A team full of petty criminals. And not good football players.
- Florida: A key player that has bullied a woman and threatened to harm her.
- South Carolina: They had issues too. The hotel and agent thing.
- Consistent bad officiating.

I have loved SEC football my whole life, but it is getting hard to accept anymore. Out of control and an inpept commissioner / office.

I am not sure why everyone is so quick to jump on the Auburn bashing bus, other than that they are winning and opposing teams and their fans cannot stand it. Fairley’s hit on Murray in the back was indeed dirty, and he was penalized, as he should have been. the one low was due to him being tripped up and rolled into the QB by the O-lineman. That is football, get over it. he was being chop blocked all day by the O-line and was only flagged ONCE. The same blocking that Pugh put on Dorsey that injured him 2 years ago in the LSU game. it is WRONG, but no one seems to bring this up. Fairley’s face mask got caught in Murray’s, he was not intentionally trying to cut him, give me a break. And if the AU players get suspended for the fight (which they did), i am shocked that there was no consequence to UGA’s bench clearing. For years now viewers have cited inconsistencies in the SEC officiating. This is just another example. Not saying it is right, but it definitely goes both ways and every team has been on both sides of that. So stop acting like AU is the only team that has ever done any of this. They are winning, get over it. end of story.

Tony, I agree that it is time for everyone to shut up about the Auburn-Georgia game. It is beginning to remind me of a divorce trial. I don’t understand the role of the FBI in the Newton investigation. I think that it is based on “marketing children” from the movie industry or some connection to child-labor laws, but Cam is certainly not a child. If Cecil got money from somewhere, it would not be subject to the IRS yet because we are still in the 2010 tax year. I am glad the FBI is in it because they move faster than the glacial NCAA, and they put the fear of God into people. Refs will certainly be watching Fairley in the same way they watched Georgia after the end-zone frolick against UF.

Emotions were certainly running high especially towards the end of last weeks game with the tigers. Since the SEC decided not to make Fairley ineligible then the next course of action was to monitor the situation very closely. I am sure that Chizik has gotten the word by them that blatant late hits will not be tolerated. I think so will the officaiting crew for the iron bowl. Hopefully, no situations will develope due to what I am sure ever Bama player on the offense has seen and is familiar and in wanting to protect their QB from illegal hits. I hope the iron bowl is one marked by a great southern tradition of football and not marrred by incident.

1. Enough with Fairley. IMO, they did not suspend him because of the backlash they would have received about not suspending the UGA players that came off the bench at the end. I’m not worried about it. Fairley will have to have an armed escort, and be lucky to leave the stadium walking if he tries anything with Alabama because those people are crazy. Murray is a tough kid; I’m proud of him, and with Scam and Scumbag gone next year, he’ll hang 70+ on them, with Coach Richt calling timeouts at the end to score again. Make no mistake, when Richt says “no comment,” he speaks volumes. He always defends players and the game; if you recall, he said the Spikes eye gouging thing was no big deal. I feel sorry for the Auburn team that comes to Athens next year.

2. No worries Ole Miss, we dog fans understand all too well losing games you shouldn’t.

I agree Fairley made a dirty hit & he was called for it! Ya’ll say AU is “a bunch of thugs”? This coming from ThUGA, the team with more arrests than I can count lmfao Both of your starting TB’s have been arrested THIS SEASON ! Remember the “Blackout” game where the 4th qtr. turned into a Soulja Boy dance party? I lost all respect for UGA that day, and Richt was just dancing along! If Fairley played for ThUGA ya’ll would love him lol If u don’t like it, beat us on the field! Stop snitching & STFU no1 wants to hear ya’ll sore losers anymore! U LOST!! SHUT UP!! LOL

Tony — The Bears played at Wrigley Field from 1921 – 1970 and now you are suggesting that Northwestern & Illinois players may need to lawyer up — brilliant.

Meanwhile, you go out of your way to not call out Mike Slive and the SEC office for sleeping at the switch on Nick Fairley. You state “the SEC office got it right when it didn’t suspend Nick Fairley.” Really? So, a player who has been documented on film throughout the season, for shots like we saw on Saturday, should be allowed to continue unabated and without any real consequence — apart from don’t do it again son? Your approach is that he get a lecture from his coaches before the 11th game of the season. Gary Danielson has already reported that LSU brought Fairley’s play on Jordan Jefferson to the attention of the league office. That obviously fell on deaf ears — sound familiar (Miss St./Cam Newton). He is allowed to continue his shenanigans on Saturday (spear to the back, pile drive tackle and raking his facemask across Murray’s face all while his head coach dances around pumping his fist in the 4th quarter like a complete jack-off). So, how does the SEC office respond to yet another incident? It “gets it right” by doing nothing. Your logic is astoundingly stupid. So, the SEC should willfully sit by while one it’s players runs around attempting to maim other players, but the Big10 should fear legal action by playing in a venue that held games for 50 years. Great analysis Tony. Well done!!

So Tony, you’re saying that Fairley will be a marked man in the Iron Bowl…what do you think happened last Saturday? I mean it’s been reported that Georgia had sent a tape of Fairley’s ‘hits’ during the season to the SEC office the week before the game, so why wasn’t he ‘marked’ then? These officials are the ones that should be suspended. If they had been paying attention, and had had the cajones to do the right thing, there wouldn’t have been a problem at the end of the game cause half Auburn’s team would have been in the locker room – along with their damn coaching staff.

This guy cheeze-it has forever changed the rivalry between the two schools – at least for me – and I’m gonna have a hard time dealing with my Auburn friends when they start making excuses for him and for that quarterback who shall remain nameless. How can a program that Shug Jordan had lent class to fallen so far? Oh, I forgot, they hired Pat Dye…nevermind.

1. this wasn’t the first game were Fairley made a questionable tackle. I wonder what his fines would total up to “if” he were playing in the NFL.
2. do you think Oregon would be undefeated and #1 if Masoli had not been kicked off of the team?
3. still in Cam’s corner, great ball player wish that he had stayed at Florida!

5. DA BEARS use to play there but as previous post stated the field was turned 90degrees, i would like to know why it wasn’t set-up like it was in the 50’s also Wrigley will only hold about 40,000 fans

That’s why I said on Monday that the Auburn coaches need to sit this kid down and have a talk.

Exactly. The most disconcerting part for me was that Cheezit didn’t pull the kid from the game himself. That’s part of a coach’s job- to help these kids learn to control their emotions. A few plays on the bench and a good dressing down by the line coach would have been appropriate. Looked to me like nobody even scolded the kid.

What are the odds Cam will play in Tuscaloosa? Probably very good, if AU has a choice of playing and winning and probably retro-fitting a full slate of forfeitures years from now. They’re betting that nobody will remember in 5 years that they (on paper and in theory) had to give back the wins and the NatChamp title (like USC/Bush). In the end, it’s only a tiny footnote in some obscure book someplace. It is what it is. We all know AU will likely be 13-1 this season, thanks to Cam. Anybody want to bet on Aubie’s record next season, san Cam? 5-7, best case? Most of you know what I’m saying and agree.

cheat? where is proof. the only ALLEGATIONS have been made in regards to MSU and their recruiting of Cam. NOT AUBURN. in no way shape or form has Auburn been accused of improper recruiting. If you are referring to them playing Cam, why shouldn’t they? how many times does the SEC and NCAA have to meet with them and NOT tell them to sit him before you realize there is no reason for them to do so? There is no evidence or reason for them to bench Cam, so he plays. as he should be. good lord people. let’s just chill out until all the facts are in, then start the bashing.

Tony, do not worry about the Illinois – Northwestern game at Wrigley Field. Remember, the that Wrigley was the Bears home field fo many years.
Also, I will admit to all that we have the worst coaching staff in the SEC this year. UF has too much talent to be managed by an under achieving coaching staff. Meyer will be forced to make changes.

Auburn fans seem to focus on the timing of the Fairley hits (i.e. – He was palying to the whistle.). What they ignore is the manner of the hit (i.e. – How he hit Murray.) The object or job of a defense is NOT to injure anyone. It is to negate the play of the offense with supperior CLEAN defensive talent. If you think injuring people is part of the game, you are a big part of the problem, in college football and society (see No. 4 on Tony’s list).

Tony – This blog was a little more balanced than your previous one. Thank you. I agree he will be watched very closely during the Iron Bowl..but honestly, everyone will be watched closely. This game is always heated and played with so much emotion. Heck, last year we had a piss poor team out there and almost beat bama. I expect AU to win the game due to the fact we have a better offense than they do. If we shut down the run game we will win. I’ve given up the fact about the passing attack. We suck. But, we’ve played against teams with 10x better quarterback (McSuckeroy) is overrated. Their defense is filled with a BUNCH of freshmen..it showed against SC and LSU..

I hope we all can move on past this hit..UGA needs to focus on GT and GT only..you might get burned for looking at the past way too much. Focus on getting beating GT..getting into the Liberty bowl…and preparing for next year with recruits..AU is in your rearview mirror..let it be like that.

Before any more stones are casts by the UGA fans (who continuously wear their red/black sunglasses), look at all of the facts:

1. The tone was set by UGA in pre-game warm-ups with the team jumping on the logo at midfield. The officials were there and kept them from being in the direct center and avoiding the penalty. How is that “classy” UGA?

2. On the first drive of the game UGA was called for a personal foul. The player was away from the ball.

3. For the game UGA was called for 6 pers fouls and AU was called for 5 pers fouls. Many of these were offsetting.

4. The hit on Fairley in Murray’s back was a late hit and was called a penalty. It was a vicious hit BUT it is being treated as the first late hit in the history of college football by UGA. Should he have used his helmet like that? NO, but if you watch the game tape there are other instances of UGA def backs using their helmets in a similar fashion on AU QB and RBs when being tackled.

5. There was a chop block on Fairley that was called and, if you watch the tape, a couple that were not. A chop block does not as vicious as the hit in the back but could result in a severe knee injury.

6. The game was very emotional and “chippy” throughout. There is one instance shown on TV in the 3Q where Gamble has tackled Cam and drives his elbow into Cam’s back when getting up. There is another play where a UGA defender drives a knee into Cam at the end of a tackle. How is that “classy” UGA?

7. The play at the end of the game where Fairley’s helmet hit Murray’s knee is clearly not intentional. He is being blocked to the ground and rolls into his knee.

8. The UGA players clearly went after Fairley on the next play and did throw punches while he is on the ground. It is clearly on the tape. How is that “classy” UGA?

9. Several UGA players came onto the field after that play ready to fight. How is that classy UGA? How many AU players came onto the field? Should the AU coach be ashamed because his players did NOT go on the field?

10. The AU players that retaliated were ejected. There is no excuse for what they did and it is not defensible.

BUT to make AU and it coach out as a “dirty” team is beyond silly. The tone was set early by UGA and continued throughout. I’m sure AU were not “angels” either on the field. Please look at ALL of the facts before making accusations. The “holier than thou” rhetoric from UGA fans should stop.

The people who’ve joined the Dirty Fairley campaign should stop and listen to Buck Belue. You know things have gotten crazy when the former Georgia quarterback, now an Atlanta radio host, becomes the voice of reason.

“Fairley would be a rock star in Georgia if he played for the ‘Dogs,” Belue wrote on his blog. “But he plays for Auburn. So we hate him. I get it.”

Tony, Ole Miss may have been picked last, but they played really really poorly this year. They could have been much better. They should be bowl eligible now. They did not get the maximum out of the people they had on the roster this year. This has been a very substandard year for the Rebels and Houston Nutt. The Front 7 on defense fell flat on their faces when they were supposed to be good and they have left points on the field on offense quite a few times and they have misused Brandon Bolden.

This was a really bad year for Houston Nutt and the coaching staff deserves the criticism it is getting.

It’s not the school’s job to discipline my kid (though they might if he deserves it), it’s mine, and my punishment will likely be more sever than theirs. And for you to say that the only ‘allegations’ are directed toward Miss State, you seem to forget that it’s been ‘alleged’ that young Cam told a recruiting representative of MSU that ‘he wanted to come to Miss State, but his Daddy said the money was too good at Auburn’…now that’s what I call an allegation that can easily be verified. If the guy’s lying they’ll find out soon enough. Plus I’ve seen enough episodes of Law & Order to know that all they’ll need is to ‘pull the luds’ on the Newtons, the MSU recruiters, Bobby Louder and Milton McGregor…along with ‘following the money’ on Daddy Newton’s, so-called, church, and the allegations will become proof soon enough. Wonder what rationalizations and excuses you’ll be making then?

Hell fire, any program with an once of integrity wouldn’t have recruited him in the first place. His bad behavior at Florida got him run off – OK, so they let him ‘withdraw’ in lieu of dismissal – but cheating, stealing (or paying somebody else that stole), attempting to destroy evidence and the accumulation of traffic violations that he never was penalized for, would be enough for just about every school in the Conference, but not you guys, and apparently not Miss State either – they just got ‘out bid’.

Tony, where’s the consistency in your takes on Fairley and Brandon Spikes’ eye gouging last year? Here’s your quote on Spikes: “If Florida doesn’t suspend Brandon Spikes, then the SEC office should.” To me, Spikes’ actions were just as objectionable as Fairley’s, and should draw equal punishment. Yet, you seem satisfied that Auburn was penalized 15 yards, then put the player on double-secret probation. I guess that’s old guard SEC people watching out for their brethren.

A couple of points to all fans.

Football unlike golf isn’t a gentlemans game. That said, Fairley’s style of play isn’t what I would coach a young man to do. You play hard, lights out, whatever you want to call it without “intentionally” trying to injure the opponent. That’s “dirty” football period. AU has condoned his style of play all year. I am becoming more and more skeptical of the game as far as the officials ability to move a game to one side of the board with their calls, or non calls.

I have no complaints in losing to AU, I expected it. And as far as our defense goes, CMR throttled CTG’s intensity and his ability to get the players attention. CTG can only do so much within CMR’s guidelines. CMR sets the tone for our team and his “passive” nature is our current culture. Not condoning or criticizing, but want to bet as to whether “young” AJ McCarron goes against Sabans wishes again? It’s pretty “damn” clear who’s in charge in that program.

Bama dude you say that the school should punish Fairley but he didn’t break any rules. When he did break a rule (ie. the spear hit) he was penalized. Do you penalize your kids for not breaking the rules? It’s not the job of the coaches to call fouls on their own team. Get a clue.

Really. If it wasn’t against the rules then why was it flagged? I have been around football for a long time in almost every capacity. I currently work the chains at a big time HS. Almost like clockwork, a stupid late hit results in the player spending some time on the sideline with his coach telling him (nicely, of course- HA) that his actions hurt the team and that his future playing time depends on his controlling himself.

I’m completely fine with the SEC not suspending Fairley. He only had the one clearly bushleague hit and then the facemask rake earlier in the game, but that’s kind of what we ask out of beastlike defensive linemen.

What should have happened is that the Officials should have removed Mr. Fairly from the game after the 4 seconds late hit spear.

Ejections should be more common in football. Forget the Suspension/Fines after the fact.

When guys do something ergrigous flag them for the 15 yarder then kick them out on the spot.

Fairley is a thug

November 17th, 2010
9:57 am

We should be ashamed for wanting to see Fairley’s knee blown out? He’s been trying to injure QBs all year, hitting them late when they’re defenseless. He’s not picking up running backs up and body slamming them.because they have forward momentum and can defend themselves, unlike a QB who has just let go of a pass, or in the case of Jordan Jefferson, is just standing there while the officials are blowing whistles for a false start.

What’s really pathetic is that Tracy Rocker asked Fairley why he was body slamming QBs after one of his dirty plays in the LSU game, yet the Auburn coaching staff has done nothing to stop it.

I’d rather see Fairley hurt than multiple opposing QBs. Maybe if he spent a few months rehabbing he’d reflect on how much it sucks. But I doubt it.

Tony, Glad to see you read my blog the other day regarding the scrutiny Fairley will get the rest of the way out. He was pretty stupid to shine the spotlight on himself like this at a time when they could have used his aggressiveness. He’s also solely responsible for turning what used to be a gentleman’s quarrel (Auburn vs. Georgia) into a full blown hate rivalry now. Since the game, I have not talked to a single Georgia fan who said they will pull for Auburn from this point forward — even if it means the SEC losing in the NC game. I sure wouldn’t want to be an Auburn fan between the hedges next year. The Georgia fans will give them no quarter.

I don’t know why I continue to read Tony Barnhart’s stuff. I guess for the same darn reason I continue to turn on the TV on Saturdays to watch a product that produces no legitimate champion. That said, you can’t say the SEC got it right by not suspending Fairley for the hit on Murray and then turn around and say that Fairley would deserve to be tossed if he puts a similar hit on McElroy. The two statements are contradictory and, as usual with Tony, make no sense.

If the refs don’t call it a penalty, how can you punish the kid for playing hard and to the limits of the rules. I just think that all of the UGA fans (and Bama, Fla.) forget about how their players have been over the years. There are plenty examples of hits by all of the teams in the SEC year in and year out that could be fines in the NFL. Fairley’s play this year is spot-lighted because his team is fore front in the news right now. Until he is called out again he is going to continue to walk the fine line. Every team wants their players to play like that. If they don’t they end up with a 6-6 record.

Tony, Fairley not getting suspended and the Cam Newton investigation dragging on slowly is all about making sure Auburn gets through to the National Championship game – BIG MONEY FOR THE SEC – regardless of what happens after the game is done and the checks are written. Watchs the call in the Iron Bowl when Fairley continues to come in with late hits, they might flag him, but won’t eject him. Fairley late hit Murray five times in the game and gets flagged for one? If Justin Houston or Dobbs or Jones or take your choice of Bulldog lineman or LB’s had done that they would have been flagged for every one of those hits. I can agree with the first part of your statement about getting into a players head. But, with a good clean lick, not a cheap shot. Fairley is a “Cheap Shot Artist”.

Second, anytime you try and injure someone it can be a “serious permanent injury”. Play hard but play clean. AU coaches condone it by letting it happen.

1. The Fairly thing will die fast.

2. Ole Miss is Ole miss but they are better. Like I’ve been saying about Mark Richt, the problem is that the rest of the SEC is better.

3. I don’t understand why the FBI is involved but…I deal with banks and I worked for a company that dealt with a bank once they folded–causing the bank to lose money. Since it was federally insured, the FBI got involved. When they interviewed me, my forehead kept sweating like a faucet. These guys are trained to intimidate and get the truth from people. I gave them the name of an institution in Miami that was involved in the transactions and with 12 hours they had interviewd several people there and moved on. So from my experience–Yes, they move fast and NO you better not lie to them. My only question is: What do they do with their findings?? Do they turn them over to the NCAA? What if Cecil faces charges but the files are confidential? Then what? Tony, you said on your show last night that we are in uncharted waters. That about says it all.

4. I think the coaching that needs to be done is in the way of counceling the kids.

Go back and look at the LSU and Auburn game Fairley can be seen Picking UP the LSU Qback and body slamming to the ground. Yes the Ref’s are there to control the game but they are also there to protect the players. Especially the Qback. It’s all about money. Heck I wouldn’t be surprised if the NCAA and SEC haven’t already made a deal. I do know they need to do a better job protecting these players before someone winds up in a wheelchair. I have no problem with hardnose football but Fairley is out of hand. Yes the Georgia line is responsable, and when someone takes a shot at your Qback, some lineman should have taken him out. I’m just as upset with the O-line for not doing something.

Georgia fans are seriously making that much fuss over a guy playing too rough. Mark Richt is such a nice guy. Don’t fire him. And don’t hit our players so hard.

I’ve never heard another teams fans complain so much about their opponent after being beat by them. Does Georgia ever look in the mirror and say, wow, we are not very good? Sources familiar with the investigation have said the probe has included the use of wiretaps, and several lawmakers agreed to wear wires to capture the conversations between themselves, other lawmakers and lobbyists.

More evidence emerged Thursday that the federal investigation has been going on for more than a year. Rep. Benjamin Lewis, R-Dothan, emerged from the grand jury to say that, in March 2009, he went to the FBI to report a conversation he considered inappropriate.

Between your QB, Scam Newton, Trooper Taylor acting like thuggery should be congratulated, your coach waving his towel in agreement, and Nick Fairley auditioning for the WWE with his suflex QB slams, you’ve become the cartoon of college football. But we can see you’re very proud of that. Let the chips continue to fall and when your football program is devastated, I hope this season gives you lots of fuzzy memories because I have a feeling the Abarn football program is going to be toast and you’ll have to live on the memories of 2010 for a very long time. By the way, when Alabama stomped us two years ago, noone wished ill will towards Bama. When UF beat UGA two years ago, I hated Florida but pulled for them in the championship game. It’s not about getting beat on Saturday. It’s about respecting the game. Something you know nothing about.

OldFan

The comment’s been made, and I think it’s an fair one, that the premier team in the conference will always get cut a little more slack on the field. I doubt there’s an “arrangement” to ensure Auburn wins, but the SEC officials know that the best chance for the SEC to be in the NC game is with Auburn, so absent a player pulling a gun or knife on the field, they’re going to be sure that judgment calls don’t lead to an upset that keeps the SEC out of NC contention. Reasonable enough. There’s simply too much money on the table for the SEC to allow its dominant position to be challenged. A big upset feels good for about two days—-losing all that prestige and revenue on the national stage hurts for a long time. If UGA wants to get all the judgment calls it thinks it deserves, it better be good enough to earn them.

The guy that runs Victoryland went to Troy State but ‘funnels’ a lot of money to Auburn, along with most of the politicians in Alabama..maybe he’s laundering Bobby Louder’s money these days since the Feds have Bobby under, pretty much, constant scrutiny.

The FBI’s involved because they have subpoena power and can get all the players under oath in a hurry. You see the NCAA and the SEC want this mess cleared up before they have to be embarrassed again so soon. If your people are clean you’ve got nothing to worry about AU, if not, then we and lot of others may have to be looking for another opponent for next November.

And don’t get me wrong, I don’t wish Mr. Fairley any harm. That’s for others to deal with now..and for Auburn fans to regret the hell out of signing…along with Newton…and cheeze-it…and a whole lot of others that’ll be looking for someplace to go when AU has to give up football for a while.

TB got it wrong right off the bat. The shot to the knee was not a football play. Had Fairley even attempted to extend either of his arms in ANY way, it would be considered a tackle. But when falling to the ground, still driving forward, you curve your torso toward the QB knees, pulling your arms underneath you, that is a spear, and an intentional attempt to injure.

Watched the replay countless times, trying to give Fairley the benefit of the doubt.

If there is an NFL lockout and Fairley returns for his senior season, then he is truly a marked man.

Good points Dirty Dawg. All of them. But in light of what USC got, for much worse, I doubt they will have to give up football. Reggie Bush’s case was much more severe. A new home for the family to live in. Paper trails everywhere. Bush flaunting cash and cars in front of the coaches.

I’m just sayin, maybe they get the same punishment, except they don’t have to have Lame Kitten as a coach. That being the case, forefeit the season, lose some scholarships and sit out of bowls for two years. I can’t see it being more than that.

USC isn’t exactly dieing on the vine out there. They only lost a couple of guys after the news broke. So I think Auburn will still be a solid team even if they get popped.

The question is does the FBI speed this thing up enough to possibly effect the outcome of the mythical NCG and the equally mythical–best player in the country award.

TB is doing a good job. Proof is, all sides are calling him a homer for the other side. Thats when you know that you are being unbiased. If only one side was doing the bashing, then there’s probably a bias.

Speaking of bias (which I am). Here’s my 2 cents.

UGA fans: Get over it. You got spanked. It happens. I would be more worried about the 49 points that were laid on you and making sure to beat tech to be bowl eligible.

Fairly had a clear late hit. AU was penalized. The other one, was part of the game. AU and UGA were pretty even on penalties. Stop making a big deal of it. Thats not why you lost. See above.

So some say AU would not be the same without Newton. Well…DUH. I love it. UGA fans say UGA would have beat AU without Cam. Maybe. Just maybe. On the other hand, what do you think would have happened if UGA didnt have AJ Green. I’m guessing a mercy rule or modify score board to work with 3 digits.

On Cam Newton saga. The whole world has been digging for almost a month. The NCAA since January. And as a result, the same smoke being recycled, nothing new has been found. All roads lead back to former MSU players. The only new thing that’s bad for AU, NCAA stated if a player or his rep, solicited money (play for pay) they are inelegible. However, there is precedent for a identical situation with a former Bama player. In that instance, the NCAA ruled, that he was unlegible to play for the school with which negoatiations ocurred. We’ll see who has the better lawyers. Btw, there needs to be proof. An ESPN/Fox/blogger analyst citing unamed sources doesn’t count. It makes for a busy news day. Thats about it.

And if AU gets slammed by NCAA. UGA still got taken to the woodshed in the field. Cam and the rest of the team could have got paid in gold coins, framed the coins and put them on their wall. That doesnt make the AU players any stronger or faster or coached any better.

Fairley is a good player, no doubt. Of course, Auburn is giving up nearly 30 a game in SEC play with him on the field so I imagine points can be scored. Bama will put up some serious points and has the athletes to tackle Cam. He’ll get his yards and put some points up but I don’t see it being enough. The young Bama D has been downright nasty at home this season.

AUinAtl you are correct, UGA got beat by the best paid player in the NCAA.

The rub is, at some point, it may be stricken from the records and cost AU dearly.

If this plays out like the Reggie Bush saga, the real question of was it worth it, may not be answered for several more years. If it plays out like Bush, the obvious answer is “hell no it wasn’t worth it.”

More interested in seeing if there is any truth to article in the Tuskegee News by Paul Davis, questioning possible payments to players thru a lobbying firm retained by AU and Alabama. Rumored monies filtered thru casinos that the lobbying firm represents. Seems like Alabama state law would prohibit state funded schools from doing business with firms that deal with the gambling industry, dangerous mix.

Mark Richt let his players stomp on our AU logo before the game. For people calling Chizik classless, please get a clue. Richt masks behind his Christianity, but hes the worst coach on and off the field in the SEC. How can you recruit that well, year in and year out, and still never produce your players? When’s the last time you guys had a running back get drafted in the NFL? Do you realize your players left the bench for a BRAWL? Richt sure is a good guy ;) Stay classy, Athens! Once again you are wrong. As bad as Fairley was in the Georgia game he has been getting away with this all year, body slamming QB’s on their necks & heads. You will be the first person to criticize & complain when a QB is paralyzed from this intentional, illegal take down and no it is not a tackle & has nothing to do with toughness, which is why it is banned in the NFL.

“Coach Rocker always asks me, ‘Why are you always trying to slam the quarterback?’” Fairley said. “I’m like, when you’re in a fight, you slam to take the heart out of (them).”

“Eventually that starts to build up in their minds,” Chizik said.

The National Media has done a pretty good job of giving the player, program and conference and to a certain degree ‘college football’ a black eye over this.

A year is a long time from now. Guessing that by the time the game rolls, things will be pretty much back to normal.

Only question will be if Auburn is looking at probation or not. (And I honestly hope that they are not).

While there are many idotic post attempting to defend his play, I still want Auburn to beat Alabama and then find a way to beat Oregon (which I’m not sure they are capable of doing).

All right ‘Barners I have read enough of your crap today. Nick Fairley is a sorry excuse for a football player. End of story. Don’t start that crap about well UGA players retaliated by punching him on the next play. I have yet to hear anyone condone the actions of that redneck a-hole Ben Jones. BTW he is from Bibb Co. AL. I can’t stand his fat-A$$ and he should be sent packing. He is very reminiscent of that uber-A$$, Daniel Inman who was a personal foul waiting to happen every snap of the ball. I have yet to find a dawg fan that could stand him either.

Nick Fairley was not blocked into Murray’s knee. He was clearly being shoved past Murray then the Ghetto the hut wannabe had the presence of mind to lunge back toward Murray. After seeing the numerous video clips you cannot deny it in good conscience.

Also please stop the excuse of “he was playing all out” and “you can’t ask a guy to play less than full speed.” Give me a break, David Pollack is the poster boy for all out and while he did ocassionally get flagged for a late hit etc, he was never accused of trying to injure or maim another player. Nick is considered a good player because of his dirty play not in spite of it.

Hey Bulldog59-

Just for the record, if something improper such as play for pay was done at AU, I will be leading the lynch mob at AU. I agree its not worth it.

However, at this point in time. There’s absolutley nothing in common with the Reggie Bush case with exception of the Heisman/NC potential. In Bush’s case, there was a house ($750k?) in which Reggie’s parents moved into from a small apartment. It took a while to produce documented evidence. There was a lot more than smoke.People forget, Newton was not Heisman material when he was being recruited (Reggie Bush was). Cam wasn’t even named the starting QB at AU until August/September. It would be strange to have this kind of money and risk involved for a potential special play/backup QB at the time. I can see where MSU wanted him bad. D Mullen coached Cam at UF. I’m not saying paying is justified for a known potential Heisman contender such as Bush at the time. I’m saying that it would be strange. That would mean that the booster or whomever allegedly is rumored to have paid knows the future. In Cam’s case, so far, everything is based on the MSU gang. The famous church hasn’t been fixed as was originaly claimed. Granted, I’m an AU alumnus and I am hoping for the best.

Based on what I know, I’m guessing what happened is that the Newtons visited MSU. Kenny Rogers and C Newton discussed play for pay (not clear on who approached whom, it doesn’t matter). Former MSU player J Bond becomes involved or gets wind of it. Reports it. MSU reports to it to the SEC/NCAA. Newton backs off for whatever reason. AU, UO and UT recruit Newton. All three (Stoops, and Kiffin went on record) claim nothing improper happened. Newton ends up at AU. I know, the implication/accusation is that AU must have outbid MSU. But so far nothing, not even a rumor of the money. It is very hard to hide $200k. Note how fast they found $1k in the AJ Green case). We all know, everyone and their brother is looking for the money trail. Nothing so far. I hope its stays that way. I’m not saying Newton is a choir boy either. I don’t know of any SEC school or any big program that recruits choir boys only. Specially UGA.

On the lobby group/casino/dog track angle. That would be pretty bad if it turns out the way that it is being speculated. I’ve never been a big fan of Lowder and his MO at AU. But at this point, if true, it seems to be more of an IRS case. I hope that stays that way.

If nothing else, AU maybe guilty of everything they are accused of. All that means is that the AU thugs are better at football than the UGA thugs. And smarter, as they at least manage to stay out of jail.

You left off that the refs allowed Auburn to score 3 TD’s after UGA was up 21-7. Dave, you seriously watched that game and can tell me Auburn wasn’t the better team? Take the blinders off buddy. Enough of this crap. Accept the UGA-AU rivalry for what it is and, since college football is all about money anyway, why not make the most of it? Here’s a suggestion: using the UGA-UF game as a hugely successful marketing model, why not turn this one into the “Hillbilly Barn Dance”, complete with its own logo? My first thought is the banjo kid from “Deliverance”, but certainly there are other images just as appropriate. The AJC could run a contest and Ned Beatty can announce the winner. AUinATL, agree with everything…..nothing proven yet, which is why everyone needs to calm down. The only things for certain is the NCAA is incredibly slow and they never quit. Once they come knocking, they rarely leave empty handed.

NCAA investigations don’t typically involve the FBI, so everyone is or should be wondering why now? The investigation of the lobbying firm and it bleeding over to the NCAA because they found a trail of money from schools to players is a possible explanation. Again, just have to wait and see.

Maybe the Falcons can draft Farley? No one can forget Hall of Fame Falcon/Auburn Linebacker Tracy Rocker. He is an all-time classic, at least as far as wasted draft picks. Good thing McKay is around now to save us the possibility of making the same mistake twice.

Tracy Rocker never played for the Falcons, and Thomas Dimitroff is now the team’s GM.

You Dawg fans who keep repeating “30-24″ like a mantra enjoy yourselves all you want. The thing is… Tech alumni and fans have lives that don’t depend entirely on what a bunch of kids does on Saturday afternoons. College sports are fun to follow, but the biggest reason for going to college is to get an education.

UGA fans don’t seem to care about anything but football, and they don’t care if their players are enrolled in silly majors that no parents who are paying the bills would send their kids to UGA for. The very few football and basketball players who graduate have no job opportunities and end up unemployed or working in menial jobs that hardly require a college degree.

Georgia Tech is a real school with serious academic standards, and that includes scholarshipped athletes. UGA has a long history of being a party school, where parents send their kids for an easy degree, even if the degree itself is practically worthless.

Jan Kemp exposed the crap going on at UGA with athletes being enrolled in courses a ten-year-old kid could pass. That was almost three decades ago, and nothing has changed. If anything, the abuses are more blatant today. Way too many illiterate morons are being recruited, and the very high arrest rate shows clearly that Richt does not care if his players have any morals or self-discipline.

The bottom line is that most Tech fans have very good jobs and productive lives that don’t depend on Tech’s football record for their happiness in life. It would be great to beat UGA more often, but when you put scholar-athletes up against dummy-athletes, it’s usually no contest.

It’s pretty pathetic to see UGA fans who typically have never been within miles of a college classroom and who live or die with UGA’s weekly results on the football field.

So keep on posting your “30-24″ all you want, especially since you’re home with plenty of time on your hands. I wish you well, maybe you’ll get lucky and get your old job back at the Waffle House before your unemployment checks stop coming.

I wonder if any of the books about UGA football include the perspective of someone speaking for the late Jan Kemp? The perspective that “student” athletes like Lindsay Scott were playing years without taking college level courses? That the proudest moment of the football program was earned by players who never earned a single college credit?

Dawgtards love to return to 1980, but their memories are really short when it comes to remembering an earthshaking event that happened a few years later that showed the world what a joke UGA athletes were and what a scam artist their beloved Vince Dooley was (and is). So for all those dawgtards with short memories or who think their athletes are actually taking real courses and trying to graduate, here’s the quote that broke the trial wide open and showed what a slimeball Dooley is:

O. Hale Almand Jr., a lawyer for the defense, offered a justification for the favorable treatment accorded the athletes, citing a hypothetical player. “We may not make a university student out of him,” he told the jury, “but if we can teach him to read and write, maybe he can work at the post office rather than as a garbageman when he gets through with his athletic career.”

Nothing has changed at UGA, they just do a slightly better job of keeping things quiet, but that’s hard to do when 44 of your player-thugs have been arrested, isn’t it?

No one on this blog has even mentioned “30-24.” And don’t bring up that crap about “scholar athletes.” 85% of Tech football players are listed as Management majors. WTF does that mean. I am willing to bet none of them will ever be a manager. That major is worthless and every damn one of you bugs knows it. None of us are too proud to admit we have had issues with academics at UGA, however you are a complete fool if you think Tech players are superior intellectuals. Managment at Tech = Housing at UGA. Don’t even try to deny it.

By the way, nice cut and paste from every UGA blog from the last 10 years. You have never been accused of being original have you. Jan Kemp has now passed away and does not deserve having you continue to use her legacy as a punchline. And normally I would never hope for a school to get heavily sanctioned. But after the way your players, fans, and coaches acted Saturday, and continue to act, I couldn’t care less what AU gets, even the death penalty. Cobble-Dawg, the FBI is involved because it involves something GREATER than football. The dogtrack is the focus and the kickbacks going to Alabama politicans is the crux of the investigation. And if were a betting dog, I’d say alot of that money laundering could have potentially went through quite a few lobbyists and boosters at Alabama University. Because the state of Alabama has a fan base that consists mostly of Bama fans, you can bet the politicans are riding that Roll Tide crescent as well. This is bigger than Cam and Cecil Newton. You can speculate and make childish remarkds remarks at AU fans meant to nothing more than irritate but until this FBI thing plays out, they are not going to release ANY information to anyone, regardless of how GUILTY an INNOCENT party may look. Tony, how did the SEC get it right? Was it then wrong to suspend Ben Jones for the first half of the Colorado game? Didn’t you feel that the suspension of Brandon Spikes last year was appropriate. If so then you should critize the SEC for those suspensions. The SEC needs to be uniform in its application of the rules! The rules should be applied equally to the last place and first place teams in the SEC East and SEC West respectively. If suspension was appropriate for Ben Jones and Brandon Spikes than certainly it is appropriate for Fairley! Frankly, the SEC officiating and its preferential application of the rules makes me sick.

gt4ever, Saying the “Calculus” taken by the football players is as rigorous as that taken by say Aerospace Engineers is laughable. (I know atleast one of Tech’s players is majoring in AE and kudos to him.) There is no way that all of these players are “good” at calculus. As a UGA graduate I did take several Calculus classes and beyond. I do know, personally how hard it is. Your general, run of the mill college athlete at any school, save the service academies, couldn’t pass these courses. (Before you start running your mouth about I probably couldn’t get into Tech save it. I was accepted to Navy, MIT, UGA, Tech and Miami. But I chose to folow the family tradition and go to UGA.) No denying they are hard but you bugs continue to spout off about how your players take these classes. I would be very surprised if the classes the player take are legit. I know for a fact all college football players do not take very rigorous classes. Although there are exceptions. But to make claims that Tech has somehow gotten players that are far superior intellectually to other schools is preposterous.

I don’t necessarily think he should be suspended, but the culture of justification from the HC is alarming. This behavior should not be defended publicly. Cheezit’s quote should read something like, “There were a few plays that we weren’t proud of in that game, plays that were contrary to the what we teach and stand for. Bama dude, I would agree with you with any other team…but AU isn’t any other team. They have proven they cannot be stopped on offense.

As far as bama’s offense..we can stop bamas running game..hear me out..our line up and how we clog the gaps (generally)..can stop bamas running style..(stopped them last year no need to get into those run numbers)..only thing AU fears day in and day out is the passing game.
I respect Julio Jones he is beast and I hate he plays for bama. But, we have played against many great Wide-outs this year and have beaten them all (schools). I am not afraid of McElroy at all…i felt if a true passer was going to beat us it would be Mullet or Murgay.

As far as bamas defense…Great they will be in the future. But, right now they are a young defense composed with many freshmen. Cam has proven he can toy with a young defense and do whatever he wants to do against immature anxious players. I feel that will play a part in deciding the game. AGAIN..Bama’s defense will be something not to mess with next year and years to come but for now…they are young and inexperienced. Thoughts? Your view of the game to be?

Cam is good but not invincible. Clemson, Kentucky and LSU had you guys on the ropes. If Richt hadn’t stopped doing what was working and changed the game plan UGA would have made it more interesting. With that defense against Bama’s offense you will need 30 points to win this one. LSU gave you 24 and Bama has allowed almost exactly the same ppg they have. I truly believe that this Bama team, especially at home, matches up very well with Aubie. The DB’s are opportunistic enough for Cam’s mistakes to become INTs and Bama will torch that secondary with Jones, Maze, and Hanks. UGA has one great receiver, we have many more weapons than they do. Never know what will happen but I see Bama winning this 31-24 or so.

AU’s D line can be gashed all day long as long as the threat to pass is there. Your corners svck and your linebackers mediocre. UGA could have have should have put 50 on AU. Richt went into panic offense trying to hit a homerun with every play after the onside kick and our defense couldn’t stop not get your offense off the field. AU had the better team but more so Georgia was woefully out coached in the 2nd half

No one has mentioned the IRS who will definitely be interested to know if any money changed hands in this Cam Newton saga. It really is a shame if this truly was a pay for play scheme instituted by Cam’s father and a Chicago agent as it may destroy what could be a dream season for Cam Newton and the Auburn players, coaches, student body, faculty, alumni, and residents of the state of Alabama not to mention the deep South and the SEC Universities who for the most part would support the Auburn quest for a National Football Title that was withheld from them in their last undefeated season.

At the same time, I must say that when I saw Fairley actually pick up Murray and actually slam him down on the turf as hard as he could under the full force of momentum and weight of Fairley’s 293 lb. body several times in addition to hitting him late two different times, that the game officials should have stopped play on the first such tackle and warned Fairley and the Auburn coaches that would not be tolerated. It is one thing to make a clean and hard tackle but to pick up the player, throw him to the ground as hard as you can and to fall on him with the intent to hurt the opposing player and knock him out of the game with such a deliberate act should not be tolerated anywhere.

On September 14, 2003, the John Zenor of the ASSOCIATED PRESS reported:

Former Auburn coach Terry Bowden said on tape two years ago that boosters were funneling thousands of dollars to players when he became coach in 1993, a time when the Tigers were on NCAA probation.

“They were paying players cash, $12,000, $15,000 to sign,” Bowden said on a recording reviewed by the Associated Press. “All I was told to do was shake hands and say, “Thank you. I appreciate how much you love Auburn.’ “

On the tape, Bowden said 25-30 boosters would meet in Birmingham and 15-20 would meet in Rome, Ga., and that they would give $5,000 each. He said that when he arrived at Auburn, an assistant collected the money

I will admit that the hit on Murray in the back was flagrant.
Fairly should have been flagged and he was.

I think if I were Chizik or Rocker I would have sat him down at least for a series while we have a serious talk about the fine line between effort and unessessary roughness.

I have watched every game this year and I have seen his sacks.
There was nothing there more than just good form tackling.
Players are coached to run through the ball carrier wrap them up and drive with your legs.
Anyone that ever hit a tackling dummy knows that.
Fairley is simply pretty good at it.

Defensive linemen live to hit the quarterback.
Aside from the occasional fumble recovery, its the closest the guys in the trenches ever get to glory.
As long as its a clean legal hit, thats football.

I do hope that the coaches will clean up the junk……that would be both coaching staffs.
There was plenty to go around.

@Fan of the Game

The game got out of hand, but it’s time to let it go.

Everyone will form their own opinion about who “started it”. Both teams violated rules — that’s a fact.

It’s time to let it go.

You play again next year.

I’ve seen some Auburn fans on here claim that Georgia fans would love Fairley if he was a Dawg.

Maybe so?

Wonder how the Auburn fans would like him now if he was a Dawg and he had speared Cam in the back like that?

Fan of the game, I need a laugh tonight. Please explain to me why anyone would be jealous of Georgia. Let’s see no national title in my life time, Shreavport last year, 5-6 this year…This ougt to be good. By the way, the reason no one got hurt in the endzone thing was because the Gators actually handled it well. That could have been a huge brawl and a black eye that would never go away for college ball and the SEC.

I am a Georgia fan, through and through. I have been watching SEC Football since little kid. I wasn’t fan of gimmicks like rushing field or changing colors like Mark Richt. I am traditionalist. If you have to resort to gimmicks to get your team ready and it still gets your butts whipped, why not play wit regular colors. Mark Richt lost me when we were ranked 3 and he had ‘blackout crap’ for Alabama and the beat the dawg out of us at home in fornt of everybody. That was beginning of no opponent respect and no confidence in our team. You blew it boy..Thanks Mark.

Haggerty – Look how many people come on blogs containing info about UGA and then look at other blogs. Hey it sells news because people are concerned about UGA and what is happeing. That is an example of jealously. You don’t have to win National Championships in football or basketball to have a successful athletic program. Also look at graduation rate. Pretty damn good! The only black eye in the UGA Fla. series was Ealey’s caused by Spikes.

fan of the game, This is actually a college football blog (not Georgia). Fact of the matter is Georgia is a mediocre regional program. Nationally nobody cares about Georgia and hasn’t in our lifetime. Nation wide the SEC is Florida, Alabama, LSU, and now Auburn is getting up there. Just reality, trust me nobody is jealous of a poorly run, issue laden, mediocre at best program.

It is going to be interesting to see what happens to our two programs playing in Atlanta. It is not over yet as far as Newton and USC has not heard a final word on their problems with players staying at the plush hotel free of charge. Cloud over both programs. Who is your school?

Furthermore, your opinion on the SEC’s decisions, whatever they may be, should be kept to yourself. Due to the fact that you’re featured prominently on the SEC website and work for CBS, you have a financial conflict of interests if you call out the SEC.

Report: Booster received payment plan for Newton
By The Associated Press, AP

FILE – In this Nov. 13, 2010, file photo, Auburn quarterback Cameron Newton …
Mississippi State booster Bill Bell told ESPN.com that he received a payment plan designed to get Cam Newton to sign with the Bulldogs from a man who said he represented the quarterback’s father.

Bell, a former Mississippi State player, said Kenny Rogers sent him a text message outlining a payment schedule that included $80,000 on the day Newton signed, $50,000 30 days later and $50,000 30 days after that. Rogers, who has worked for an agent, is also a former Mississippi State player.

“When he asked for it, it was like ‘Bam!”’ Bell said in the report. “He told me this kid’s dad is going to want money and the next day he sent me a text message. He didn’t say anything other than ‘This is what I want and I want it in three installments.”’

Cam Newton, a leading Heisman Trophy candidate, eventually signed with Auburn. The second-ranked Tigers (11-0) have clinched a berth in the Southeastern Conference championship game.

Calls from The Associated Press to Bell, Cecil Newton and Rogers’ attorney were not immediately returned.

Bell said in the report that the phone that contains Rogers’ text message was damaged by water, but he’s attempting to retrieve the text through his cell phone provider.

Bell, who lives in Florida, said he was on three-way calls with Rogers and Cam’s father, Cecil, when discussions about the payment plan took place. He said Cecil Newton never directly asked for money and he has shared some voice messages with the NCAA.

“(Cecil Newton) didn’t come out and say, ‘I want $180,000,”’ Bell said in the report. “He inferred it and talked about it, but not directly. Kenny would talk about it in front of him, and (Cecil Newton) never corrected him or said, ‘No, that’s not what we’re doing.”’

Bell said the initial contact to him was made by Rogers. But Bell said he also had several conversations with Cecil Newton during his son’s recruitment.

“He said it was going to take more than just a relationship with (Mississippi State coach) Dan Mullen and that Cam’s relationship with Mullen wasn’t what Mullen thought it was,” Bell said. “That’s when he said, ‘Dan Mullen is going to have to put a smile on my face if he thinks he’s going to get my son.”’

Bell told ESPN.com he is publicly talking about the payment plan to make clear Mississippi State did not break NCAA rules.

Rogers’ attorney, Doug Zeit, told ESPN.com Mississippi Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann has requested an interview with Rogers, but that hasn’t occurred. He also confirmed that Rogers has met with the NCAA.

red neck 61 : on the chop block called – if you play it back in slow motion you will see that Jones basically fell down and barely bumped Fairley at all. Show the play from the proper angle and you will see what really happened. #50 (o-line) for Auburn hit Georgia’s DE from behind at the knees and knocked him out of the game. He did this at least three times and never got flagged. Newton punched Rambo in the face on a play following Rambo’s interception and the ref pointed to Newton and “warned” him but never flagged him – pitiful. Refs shouldn’t warn when they see a penalty they are payed to throw the flag. The refs let the game get out of hand.

Fairley should have been called for roughing the passer at least six times in that game. Of course, Cam Newton should have had an obvious face mask personal foul. One way or another, Wes Byrum’s feet were planted on the 40 and he reached back arm’s length for the football. Those nine yard onside kicks are a bitch.
