Auburn’s Nick Fairley will get a lot of scrutiny in Iron Bowl

Nobody asked me but:

1. Nick Fairley will get a lot of scrutiny in the Iron Bowl: I think the SEC office got it right when it didn’t suspend Nick Fairley for the Iron Bowl on Nov. 26. The shot to the back that Fairley put on Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray was way over the line and he was penalized for it. The shot on the knee to Murray was a football play. But at that point I don’t think anybody from Georgia was in the mood to give Fairley the benefit of the doubt.

And please, I  don’t need the emails and the photos and the video that there was rough play on both sides. I don’t need to know that a bunch of Georgia players ran on he field. I get all of that.  Let’s talk about what happens as things move forward.

Because of what happened last Saturday at Jordan-Hare, the dynamic on Fairley has changed. I’m not saying if it is right or wrong. I’m just telling you that it has.

If Fairley puts the same kind of  hit on the Alabama quarterback as he did on Murray, there is decent chance he gets tossed.  Why? Because fair or not, Nick Fairley will be a marked man against Alabama because of what happened against Georgia. The officials, whose No. 1 job is to keep control of the game, won’t let this one get out of control like Georgia-Auburn did at the end.  And if some players have to be tossed to maintain order, so be it.

That’s why I said on Monday that the Auburn coaches need to sit this kid down and have a talk.

2. I don’t understand the uproar over Ole Miss and its 4-6 record: The Rebels were picked to finish last in the SEC West and they are going to finish last in the SEC West. New quarterback Jeremiah Masoli has done his part but Ole Miss is last in the SEC in scoring defense (34.8 points per game). I don’t follow recruiting but I hear that coach Houston Nutt has a very good class lined up. Don’t panic, Ole Miss. The guy has won nine games the past two seasons. Have a little perspective.

3. Until there is some news, we’re going to have a “Cam Free” zone here:  Here is a little bit of news: Media reports surfaced yesterday that the FBI has spoken to former Mississippi State player John Bond about what he knew and when he knew it concerning the Cameron Newton case. But it’s interesting how things tend to move a little more quickly once the feds get involved. Someone made this suggestion to me yesterday: Now that the FBI has decided that this case falls under its jurisdiction, everybody involved in needs to be hauled before a judge and testify under oath. You lie, you go to jail. I like that idea. I believe that would add some much-needed clarity.

4. Pray for the kids from Southern Miss: All this fussing back and forth among adults about a game doesn’t seem so important when three kids are in a hospital and one of them is paralyzed from the  waist down. The three Southern Mississippi football players were shot at a club as the players were celebrating their win over No. 25 Central Florida in the early hours of Sunday morning. One of the players, whose name I won’t give here, is reportedly paralyzed. This is when coaches have to be at their very best. Southern Miss is 7-3 and has a big game with Houston on Saturday. The kids on that team will not want to play and I don’t blame them. It will be hard to get them to focus.

5. I’m a little concerned about that game at Wrigley: Northwestern and Illinois will play at Wrigley Field in Chicago on Saturday. It is a quaint notion but I’ve seen some of the pictures. The back of one end zone is right next to a wall. It looks dangerous to me. Nothing may happen and I hope it doesn’t. But if a kid gets hurt because the venue could not safely accommodate a college football field, somebody’s lawyer is going to be on the phone Sunday morning.

Tony,
Once again you are wrong. As bad as Fairley was in the Georgia game he has been getting away with this all year, body slamming QB’s on their necks & heads. You will be the first person to criticize & complain when a QB is paralyzed from this intentional, illegal take down and no it is not a tackle & has nothing to do with toughness, which is why it is banned in the NFL.

So which would UGA fans rather have?

Fairley gets suspended, Auburn loses to Alabama, no SEC team in the BCS championship.

or

Fairley plays, Auburn wins, Auburn plays for the BCS championship.

Which is stronger, your hate for Fairley or you conference pride?

Lost in all the uproar of spearing in the back are two pile drivers that Fairley put on Murray. Two that were shown on TV. The guy is out to hurt the QB, not just making plays. Til now Auburn was the team I pulled for when they weren’t playing Ga.

Go BAMA, ROLL TIDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pile it on!! Fairley.

Check out this quote from Fairley and coaches in interview/article by Andy Bitter at Ledger-Enquirer.com on Oct. 26. He is being praised for knocking out opposing quarterbacks

“Coach Rocker always asks me, ‘Why are you always trying to slam the quarterback?’” Fairley said. “I’m like, when you’re in a fight, you slam to take the heart out of (them).”

“Eventually that starts to build up in their minds,” Chizik said.

Tony, I would agree about Fairley being scrutinized in the Iron Bowl, IF he played for Bama. Auburn the the SEC’s team this year and as been proven through many games somehow the teams with a chance for Championship games are protected. Conspiracy or not the SEC officiating is suddenly very second rate.

The National Media has done a pretty good job of giving the player, program and conference and to a certain degree ‘college football’ a black eye over this.

A year is a long time from now. Guessing that by the time the game rolls, things will be pretty much back to normal.

Only question will be if Auburn is looking at probation or not. (And I honestly hope that they are not).

While there are many idotic post attempting to defend his play, I still want Auburn to beat Alabama and then find a way to beat Oregon (which I’m not sure they are capable of doing).

See you in Athens

Tiger undercover today said this and I think it makes the most sense out of anything out there.
If Auburn didn’t offer or give Newton any money, could it still receive sanctions?

No. Victories in games in which he played could be vacated, but that would be the extent of it. Auburn can’t be sanctioned for something that happened at Mississippi State.

Un-Fairly won’t be a factor in the Iron Bowl because the refs will be watching him (hopefully it’ll be a different bunch than the ones who showed up at the UGA/AU fiasco). And if Un-Fairly can throw cheap shots, he can’t play. Simple as that. He may as well stay on the bus. ROOOOOLLLLLLLLL Tide!!!! Go USC!!!! Punish Awbun!!!!!!!

If baseball players can run into the ivy covered wall of Wrigley without pads then why can;t a bunch of fully padded football player do it? Of course this time of year the ivy is dormant and the leaves aren’t quite as soft as the summer time.

You don’t want to talk about Caleb King going after Fairley’s knees and then have 3 OL jump on him throwing punches. Because they’d be out for their next game. You don’t want to talk about Ealy throwing punches. You don’t want to talk about Charles throwing punches. You don’t want to talk about 2/3’s of the UGa team leaving the bench to start a fight. Because it would bring heat to your alma mater. YOU ARE A HOMER!!! ADMIT IT!

Ole Miss may not have the greatest football team on earth now, but they do have a GREAT coach. I think Houston Nutt is probably one of the fairest coaches in college football, and I take my hat off to him, and that, ladies and gentlemen, is an AUBURN hat I wear.

BTW, if anyone lays a series of late hits on Steven Garcia in the SEC Championship Game, you can look forward to the Evil Genius going ballistic. If the refs won’t do anything, SOS will turn his big uglies loose on the player(s) responsible.

Spurrier’s still angry about late hits and dirty play by Florida State in 2001. Say what you will about the Old Ball Coach—-he sticks up for his players. And he has pull at the commissioner’s office.

I officiated (the referee) for 25 years. I would have ejected Fairley– period. When a player attempts to injure another player– there is no gray area– he gets tossed. And making it worse the injured player wasn’t in a position to defend himself. Any good referee would have ejected Fairley.

Bama Dude : Newton is just an exception to any rule. Personally I think defending anything Newton is all about playing disciplined gaps between the tackles and speed, speed, speed everywhere else. Take a tip from ol’ Monte Kiffin, Tennessee 2009 : Move your best Safety hitman around. The ball will go the other direction.

All right ‘Barners I have read enough of your crap today. Nick Fairley is a sorry excuse for a football player. End of story. Don’t start that crap about well UGA players retaliated by punching him on the next play. I have yet to hear anyone condone the actions of that redneck a-hole Ben Jones. BTW he is from Bibb Co. AL. I can’t stand his fat-A$$ and he should be sent packing. He is very reminiscent of that uber-A$$, Daniel Inman who was a personal foul waiting to happen every snap of the ball. I have yet to find a dawg fan that could stand him either.

Nick Fairley was not blocked into Murray’s knee. He was clearly being shoved past Murray then the Ghetto the hut wannabe had the presence of mind to lunge back toward Murray. After seeing the numerous video clips you cannot deny it in good conscience.

Also please stop the excuse of “he was playing all out” and “you can’t ask a guy to play less than full speed.” Give me a break, David Pollack is the poster boy for all out and while he did ocassionally get flagged for a late hit etc, he was never accused of trying to injure or maim another player. Nick is considered a good player because of his dirty play not in spite of it.
