Auburn’s Nick Fairley will get a lot of scrutiny in Iron Bowl

Nobody asked me but:

1. Nick Fairley will get a lot of scrutiny in the Iron Bowl: I think the SEC office got it right when it didn’t suspend Nick Fairley for the Iron Bowl on Nov. 26. The shot to the back that Fairley put on Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray was way over the line and he was penalized for it. The shot on the knee to Murray was a football play. But at that point I don’t think anybody from Georgia was in the mood to give Fairley the benefit of the doubt.

And please, I  don’t need the emails and the photos and the video that there was rough play on both sides. I don’t need to know that a bunch of Georgia players ran on he field. I get all of that.  Let’s talk about what happens as things move forward.

Because of what happened last Saturday at Jordan-Hare, the dynamic on Fairley has changed. I’m not saying if it is right or wrong. I’m just telling you that it has.

If Fairley puts the same kind of  hit on the Alabama quarterback as he did on Murray, there is decent chance he gets tossed.  Why? Because fair or not, Nick Fairley will be a marked man against Alabama because of what happened against Georgia. The officials, whose No. 1 job is to keep control of the game, won’t let this one get out of control like Georgia-Auburn did at the end.  And if some players have to be tossed to maintain order, so be it.

That’s why I said on Monday that the Auburn coaches need to sit this kid down and have a talk.

2. I don’t understand the uproar over Ole Miss and its 4-6 record: The Rebels were picked to finish last in the SEC West and they are going to finish last in the SEC West. New quarterback Jeremiah Masoli has done his part but Ole Miss is last in the SEC in scoring defense (34.8 points per game). I don’t follow recruiting but I hear that coach Houston Nutt has a very good class lined up. Don’t panic, Ole Miss. The guy has won nine games the past two seasons. Have a little perspective.

3. Until there is some news, we’re going to have a “Cam Free” zone here:  Here is a little bit of news: Media reports surfaced yesterday that the FBI has spoken to former Mississippi State player John Bond about what he knew and when he knew it concerning the Cameron Newton case. But it’s interesting how things tend to move a little more quickly once the feds get involved. Someone made this suggestion to me yesterday: Now that the FBI has decided that this case falls under its jurisdiction, everybody involved in needs to be hauled before a judge and testify under oath. You lie, you go to jail. I like that idea. I believe that would add some much-needed clarity.

4. Pray for the kids from Southern Miss: All this fussing back and forth among adults about a game doesn’t seem so important when three kids are in a hospital and one of them is paralyzed from the  waist down. The three Southern Mississippi football players were shot at a club as the players were celebrating their win over No. 25 Central Florida in the early hours of Sunday morning. One of the players, whose name I won’t give here, is reportedly paralyzed. This is when coaches have to be at their very best. Southern Miss is 7-3 and has a big game with Houston on Saturday. The kids on that team will not want to play and I don’t blame them. It will be hard to get them to focus.

5. I’m a little concerned about that game at Wrigley: Northwestern and Illinois will play at Wrigley Field in Chicago on Saturday. It is a quaint notion but I’ve seen some of the pictures. The back of one end zone is right next to a wall. It looks dangerous to me. Nothing may happen and I hope it doesn’t. But if a kid gets hurt because the venue could not safely accommodate a college football field, somebody’s lawyer is going to be on the phone Sunday morning.

@Mobile Dawg Yes. To the point where to quarterback thinks about him and gets in his head. Do I think he is trying to hurt him and end a career or permanently injure him no. If you have ever played football or any other contact sport, it’s all part of the game. Any player will tell you that.

Not on illegal cheap shots.

I can agree with the first part of your statement about getting into a players head. But, with a good clean lick, not a cheap shot. Fairley is a “Cheap Shot Artist”.

Second, anytime you try and injure someone it can be a “serious permanent injury”. Play hard but play clean. AU coaches condone it by letting it happen.

1. The Fairly thing will die fast.

2. Ole Miss is Ole miss but they are better. Like I’ve been saying about Mark Richt, the problem is that the rest of the SEC is better.

3. I don’t understand why the FBI is involved but…I deal with banks and I worked for a company that dealt with a bank once they folded–causing the bank to lose money. Since it was federally insured, the FBI got involved. When they interviewed me, my forehead kept sweating like a faucet. These guys are trained to intimidate and get the truth from people. I gave them the name of an institution in Miami that was involved in the transactions and with 12 hours they had interviewd several people there and moved on. So from my experience–Yes, they move fast and NO you better not lie to them. My only question is: What do they do with their findings?? Do they turn them over to the NCAA? What if Cecil faces charges but the files are confidential? Then what? Tony, you said on your show last night that we are in uncharted waters. That about says it all.

4. I think the coaching that needs to be done is in the way of counceling the kids.

5. Wrigley field. Dumb idea. Somebody send them some measuring devices.

jrptigers, Do you realize that Abarn U is a lauging stock yet? Remember the last few years when whoever won the SEC had the support of all eleven other teams when it played for that mythical championship? Chants of SEC could be heard in the stands of almost every bowl game played over the holidays. I think that time has passed w/ Auburn’s obvious disrespect for the game we all love.

Tony I usually agree with your opinion, however this one I have some problem with. Go back and look at the LSU and Auburn game Fairley can be seen Picking UP the LSU Qback and body slamming to the ground. Yes the Ref’s are there to control the game but they are also there to protect the players. Especially the Qback. It’s all about money. Heck I wouldn’t be surprised if the NCAA and SEC haven’t already made a deal. I do know they need to do a better job protecting these players before someone winds up in a wheelchair. I have no problem with hardnose football but Fairley is out of hand. Yes the Georgia line is responsable, and when someone takes a shot at your Qback, some lineman should have taken him out. I’m just as upset with the O-line for not doing something.

Murphy, Milton McGregor is an Auburn alum and gave $1MM to the school in 2008 to help fund a new basketball arena. He’s currently in prison for trying to buy votes for legalizing gambling. Ok so the Fairly thing won’t die fast. I was traveling this weekend so I TIVO’d the game. I heard the uproar, so last night I watched the play and wondered what I missed.

Georgia fans are seriously making that much fuss over a guy playing too rough. Mark Richt is such a nice guy. Don’t fire him. And don’t hit our players so hard.

I’ve never heard another teams fans complain so much about their opponent after being beat by them. Does Georgia ever look in the mirror and say, wow, we are not very good? I’m just askin because it’s always somebody elses fault when you don’t win. Usually the officials. In this case it was that mean guy from Auburn.

Tony should know better than to stir up a frustrated, paranoid fanbase.

Sorry, I said he’s in prison. He’s actually just been charged (big difference- DOH). Anyhow- here’s an article about the case. Quote:

Sources familiar with the investigation have said the probe has included the use of wiretaps, and several lawmakers agreed to wear wires to capture the conversations between themselves, other lawmakers and lobbyists.

More evidence emerged Thursday that the federal investigation has been going on for more than a year. Rep. Benjamin Lewis, R-Dothan, emerged from the grand jury to say that, in March 2009, he went to the FBI to report a conversation he considered inappropriate.

Get Real, Abarn is being ridiculed nationwide, and by extension, so is every other SEC program. Between your QB, Scam Newton, Trooper Taylor acting like thuggery should be congratulated, your coach waving his towel in agreement, and Nick Fairley auditioning for the WWE with his suflex QB slams, you’ve become the cartoon of college football. But we can see you’re very proud of that. Let the chips continue to fall and when your football program is devastated, I hope this season gives you lots of fuzzy memories because I have a feeling the Abarn football program is going to be toast and you’ll have to live on the memories of 2010 for a very long time. By the way, when Alabama stomped us two years ago, noone wished ill will towards Bama. When UF beat UGA two years ago, I hated Florida but pulled for them in the championship game. It’s not about getting beat on Saturday. It’s about respecting the game. Something you know nothing about.

The comment’s been made, and I think it’s an fair one, that the premier team in the conference will always get cut a little more slack on the field. I doubt there’s an “arrangement” to ensure Auburn wins, but the SEC officials know that the best chance for the SEC to be in the NC game is with Auburn, so absent a player pulling a gun or knife on the field, they’re going to be sure that judgment calls don’t lead to an upset that keeps the SEC out of NC contention. Reasonable enough. There’s simply too much money on the table for the SEC to allow its dominant position to be challenged. A big upset feels good for about two days—-losing all that prestige and revenue on the national stage hurts for a long time. If UGA wants to get all the judgment calls it thinks it deserves, it better be good enough to earn them.
