Auburn’s Nick Fairley will get a lot of scrutiny in Iron Bowl

Nobody asked me but:

1. Nick Fairley will get a lot of scrutiny in the Iron Bowl: I think the SEC office got it right when it didn’t suspend Nick Fairley for the Iron Bowl on Nov. 26. The shot to the back that Fairley put on Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray was way over the line and he was penalized for it. The shot on the knee to Murray was a football play. But at that point I don’t think anybody from Georgia was in the mood to give Fairley the benefit of the doubt.

And please, I  don’t need the emails and the photos and the video that there was rough play on both sides. I don’t need to know that a bunch of Georgia players ran on he field. I get all of that.  Let’s talk about what happens as things move forward.

Because of what happened last Saturday at Jordan-Hare, the dynamic on Fairley has changed. I’m not saying if it is right or wrong. I’m just telling you that it has.

If Fairley puts the same kind of  hit on the Alabama quarterback as he did on Murray, there is decent chance he gets tossed.  Why? Because fair or not, Nick Fairley will be a marked man against Alabama because of what happened against Georgia. The officials, whose No. 1 job is to keep control of the game, won’t let this one get out of control like Georgia-Auburn did at the end.  And if some players have to be tossed to maintain order, so be it.

That’s why I said on Monday that the Auburn coaches need to sit this kid down and have a talk.

2. I don’t understand the uproar over Ole Miss and its 4-6 record: The Rebels were picked to finish last in the SEC West and they are going to finish last in the SEC West. New quarterback Jeremiah Masoli has done his part but Ole Miss is last in the SEC in scoring defense (34.8 points per game). I don’t follow recruiting but I hear that coach Houston Nutt has a very good class lined up. Don’t panic, Ole Miss. The guy has won nine games the past two seasons. Have a little perspective.

3. Until there is some news, we’re going to have a “Cam Free” zone here:  Here is a little bit of news: Media reports surfaced yesterday that the FBI has spoken to former Mississippi State player John Bond about what he knew and when he knew it concerning the Cameron Newton case. But it’s interesting how things tend to move a little more quickly once the feds get involved. Someone made this suggestion to me yesterday: Now that the FBI has decided that this case falls under its jurisdiction, everybody involved in needs to be hauled before a judge and testify under oath. You lie, you go to jail. I like that idea. I believe that would add some much-needed clarity.

4. Pray for the kids from Southern Miss: All this fussing back and forth among adults about a game doesn’t seem so important when three kids are in a hospital and one of them is paralyzed from the  waist down. The three Southern Mississippi football players were shot at a club as the players were celebrating their win over No. 25 Central Florida in the early hours of Sunday morning. One of the players, whose name I won’t give here, is reportedly paralyzed. This is when coaches have to be at their very best. Southern Miss is 7-3 and has a big game with Houston on Saturday. The kids on that team will not want to play and I don’t blame them. It will be hard to get them to focus.

5. I’m a little concerned about that game at Wrigley: Northwestern and Illinois will play at Wrigley Field in Chicago on Saturday. It is a quaint notion but I’ve seen some of the pictures. The back of one end zone is right next to a wall. It looks dangerous to me. Nothing may happen and I hope it doesn’t. But if a kid gets hurt because the venue could not safely accommodate a college football field, somebody’s lawyer is going to be on the phone Sunday morning.

Tony, Glad to see you read my blog the other day regarding the scrutiny Fairley will get the rest of the way out. He was pretty stupid to shine the spotlight on himself like this at a time when they could have used his aggressiveness. He’s also solely responsible for turning what used to be a gentleman’s quarrel (Auburn vs. Georgia) into a full blown hate rivalry now. Since the game, I have not talked to a single Georgia fan who said they will pull for Auburn from this point forward — even if it means the SEC losing in the NC game. I sure wouldn’t want to be an Auburn fan between the hedges next year. The Georgia fans will give them no quarter.

I don’t know why I continue to read Tony Barnhart’s stuff. I guess for the same darn reason I continue to turn on the TV on Saturdays to watch a product that produces no legitimate champion. That said, you can’t say the SEC got it right by not suspending Fairley for the hit on Murray and then turn around and say that Fairley would deserve to be tossed if he puts a similar hit on McElroy. The two statements are contradictory and, as usual with Tony, make no sense.

AFDawg, I have to disagree with your statement on responsibility. The AU staff is “singularly” responsible by allowing Fairley to continue “his” IMO, “dirty” style of play.

I was at the game Saturday, I pulled hard for UGA, loud and vocal, and I was treated very respectfully by the AU fans. I have some reservations to a couple of issues but I will be pulling for the Tigers to go undefeated and hope they get to Glendale. If Fairley goes down, well, what comes around, goes around.

I watched just about all SEC fans give Bama a thumbs up and job well done for the SEC last year of representing our league last year. AU, you guys have not handled this well….not just from the Georgia game last week, but this whole Cam/Fairley deal……Hope none of it is true, but I’m very concerned about the SEC, your University and your open minded fans , who we’ve always enjoyed. A lesson learned for us, It Richt loses his job, be damn careful who you hire.

UGA wants to cry… what about the MUCH MORE OBVIOUS late hit on Tebow when you guys were wearing your Grambling uniforms? Or the bottom-of-pile gunning you guys did against Nesbitt? You are crying about this because quite frankly its easier than crying about how depressingly uninspired your team is playing. The most fire your team had against Auburn was when they thought they had a fight they would be able to participate in. Thugs.

UGA fans are upset because they lost and Bama fans are crying wolf and already making excuses and the game hasn’t even been played yet. Fairley got a penalty for the spear hit as he should have. If the refs don’t call it a penalty, how can you punish the kid for playing hard and to the limits of the rules. I just think that all of the UGA fans (and Bama, Fla.) forget about how their players have been over the years. There are plenty examples of hits by all of the teams in the SEC year in and year out that could be fines in the NFL. Fairley’s play this year is spot-lighted because his team is fore front in the news right now. Until he is called out again he is going to continue to walk the fine line. Every team wants their players to play like that. If they don’t they end up with a 6-6 record.

Ole Miss is coming off back to back Cotton Bowls (which is the equivalent of back to back BCS championships for any other SEC team).

The Rebs/Bears need a signature win this season, and I believe they will beat Miss St this year (for the signature win).

Do you remember DJ Hall in your “Sept. 11th Game” against UL Monroe in 2007? He was suspended for that game, but once Bama fell behind, Saban lifted the suspension and sent him in. Saban is nowhere close to a role model on morally disciplining players.

Tony, Fairley not getting suspended and the Cam Newton investigation dragging on slowly is all about making sure Auburn gets through to the National Championship game – BIG MONEY FOR THE SEC – regardless of what happens after the game is done and the checks are written. Watchs the call in the Iron Bowl when Fairley continues to come in with late hits, they might flag him, but won’t eject him. Fairley late hit Murray five times in the game and gets flagged for one? If Justin Houston or Dobbs or Jones or take your choice of Bulldog lineman or LB’s had done that they would have been flagged for every one of those hits. It’s a joke and anybody who has been watching football for as long as you have know that, but apparently have some need to soft pedal it.
