Auburn’s Nick Fairley will get a lot of scrutiny in Iron Bowl

Nobody asked me but:

1. Nick Fairley will get a lot of scrutiny in the Iron Bowl: I think the SEC office got it right when it didn’t suspend Nick Fairley for the Iron Bowl on Nov. 26. The shot to the back that Fairley put on Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray was way over the line and he was penalized for it. The shot on the knee to Murray was a football play. But at that point I don’t think anybody from Georgia was in the mood to give Fairley the benefit of the doubt.

And please, I  don’t need the emails and the photos and the video that there was rough play on both sides. I don’t need to know that a bunch of Georgia players ran on he field. I get all of that.  Let’s talk about what happens as things move forward.

Because of what happened last Saturday at Jordan-Hare, the dynamic on Fairley has changed. I’m not saying if it is right or wrong. I’m just telling you that it has.

If Fairley puts the same kind of  hit on the Alabama quarterback as he did on Murray, there is decent chance he gets tossed.  Why? Because fair or not, Nick Fairley will be a marked man against Alabama because of what happened against Georgia. The officials, whose No. 1 job is to keep control of the game, won’t let this one get out of control like Georgia-Auburn did at the end.  And if some players have to be tossed to maintain order, so be it.

That’s why I said on Monday that the Auburn coaches need to sit this kid down and have a talk.

2. I don’t understand the uproar over Ole Miss and its 4-6 record: The Rebels were picked to finish last in the SEC West and they are going to finish last in the SEC West. New quarterback Jeremiah Masoli has done his part but Ole Miss is last in the SEC in scoring defense (34.8 points per game). I don’t follow recruiting but I hear that coach Houston Nutt has a very good class lined up. Don’t panic, Ole Miss. The guy has won nine games the past two seasons. Have a little perspective.

3. Until there is some news, we’re going to have a “Cam Free” zone here:  Here is a little bit of news: Media reports surfaced yesterday that the FBI has spoken to former Mississippi State player John Bond about what he knew and when he knew it concerning the Cameron Newton case. But it’s interesting how things tend to move a little more quickly once the feds get involved. Someone made this suggestion to me yesterday: Now that the FBI has decided that this case falls under its jurisdiction, everybody involved in needs to be hauled before a judge and testify under oath. You lie, you go to jail. I like that idea. I believe that would add some much-needed clarity.

4. Pray for the kids from Southern Miss: All this fussing back and forth among adults about a game doesn’t seem so important when three kids are in a hospital and one of them is paralyzed from the  waist down. The three Southern Mississippi football players were shot at a club as the players were celebrating their win over No. 25 Central Florida in the early hours of Sunday morning. One of the players, whose name I won’t give here, is reportedly paralyzed. This is when coaches have to be at their very best. Southern Miss is 7-3 and has a big game with Houston on Saturday. The kids on that team will not want to play and I don’t blame them. It will be hard to get them to focus.

5. I’m a little concerned about that game at Wrigley: Northwestern and Illinois will play at Wrigley Field in Chicago on Saturday. It is a quaint notion but I’ve seen some of the pictures. The back of one end zone is right next to a wall. It looks dangerous to me. Nothing may happen and I hope it doesn’t. But if a kid gets hurt because the venue could not safely accommodate a college football field, somebody’s lawyer is going to be on the phone Sunday morning.

If anyone is interested in an in-depth look at all the rumored FBI conncection to the Cam story, here is a good write-up on it. It could all be bologna, but it’s very interesting conspiracy stuff anyway. How many folks knew Jay Jacobs worked for Tigers Unlimited before becoming Aubie AD?

Cam is good but not invincible. Clemson, Kentucky and LSU had you guys on the ropes. If Richt hadn’t stopped doing what was working and changed the game plan UGA would have made it more interesting. The thing is, a Cam Newton is going to put up some yards and score but, it can be contained. Nobody has finished it with him yet but, your season isn’t over

With that defense against Bama’s offense you will need 30 points to win this one. LSU gave you 24 and Bama has allowed almost exactly the same ppg they have. I truly believe that this Bama team, especially at home, matches up very well with Aubie. The DB’s are opportunistic enough for Cam’s mistakes to become INTs and Bama will torch that secondary with Jones, Maze, and Hanks. UGA has one great receiver, we have many more weapons than they do. Never know what will happen but I see Bama winning this 31-24 or so.

This blog really does show anyone can get a degree. Hurling insults at someones school is really lame and immature. I am a UGA fan and hung out with all AU folks saturday. We got along good. I shook their hands and congraduated them on a great game. Please move on. THere are WAY more important things than football. Acting like a child and insulting others is just the work of a weak mind. Please grow up.

Bama Dude, DC, et al, I believe this will be a Barn Burner, no pun intened. Should be a close one in my opinion. No matter how good or bad these two are on the season, it is a moot point in the Iron Bowl. An amped up Bama team can caused fits to Auburn and vice-versa.

IMHO

AU’s D line can be gashed all day long as long as the threat to pass is there. Your corners svck and your linebackers mediocre. UGA could have have should have put 50 on AU. Richt went into panic offense trying to hit a homerun with every play after the onside kick and our defense couldn’t stop not get your offense off the field. AU had the better team but more so Georgia was woefully out coached in the 2nd half

The Milton McGregor connection with Camgate is now being reported. No solid facts yet, but it has gone beyond mere rumor or it wouldn’t be getting air time.

No one has mentioned the IRS who will definitely be interested to know if any money changed hands in this Cam Newton saga. It really is a shame if this truly was a pay for play scheme instituted by Cam’s father and a Chicago agent as it may destroy what could be a dream season for Cam Newton and the Auburn players, coaches, student body, faculty, alumni, and residents of the state of Alabama not to mention the deep South and the SEC Universities who for the most part would support the Auburn quest for a National Football Title that was withheld from them in their last undefeated season.

At the same time, I must say that when I saw Fairley actually pick up Murray and actually slam him down on the turf as hard as he could under the full force of momentum and weight of Fairley’s 293 lb. body several times in addition to hitting him late two different times, that the game officials should have stopped play on the first such tackle and warned Fairley and the Auburn coaches that would not be tolerated. It is one thing to make a clean and hard tackle but to pick up the player, throw him to the ground as hard as you can and to fall on him with the intent to hurt the opposing player and knock him out of the game with such a deliberate act should not be tolerated anywhere.

I know this is old, but every that’s old is new again!

On September 14, 2003, the John Zenor of the ASSOCIATED PRESS reported:

Former Auburn coach Terry Bowden said on tape two years ago that boosters were funneling thousands of dollars to players when he became coach in 1993, a time when the Tigers were on NCAA probation.

“They were paying players cash, $12,000, $15,000 to sign,” Bowden said on a recording reviewed by the Associated Press. “All I was told to do was shake hands and say, “Thank you. I appreciate how much you love Auburn.’ “

On the tape, Bowden said 25-30 boosters would meet in Birmingham and 15-20 would meet in Rome, Ga., and that they would give $5,000 each. He said that when he arrived at Auburn, an assistant collected the money

Someone asked earlier on this blog how anyone could say that this sort of behavior could possibly be a continuing trend at Auburn when they have a “brand new coaching staff”.

There is a common thread that runs through Auburn’s dirty history, and ironically, it originated in the state of Georgia. It’s name is Pat Dye.

“And still More”, in case you didn’t know it the “A” in “AJC” stands for “Atlanta”. Atlanta is in the wonderful, beautiful state of Georgia. The University of Georgia, founded in 1785 (making it the oldest public university in the United States) is also in the state of Georgia (thus the name). So, we folks who read the AJC are largely interested in UGA. Does that make sense?

Funny Tony – AFter Green and Georgia got job for the excessive celebration the SEC decided they would fix it……… Now you can run and jump in the crowd, pump your fist, do a hip chop,
etc., etc., etc. Swung too far do they not have any common sense or is the SEC judgement that bad? Now they will allow you to poke peoples eyes out, hit them 4 seconds late, pick them up and Body slam, throw a punch for a stiff arm….. but they will fix again after the Georgia Game.
Awful strange . Silve and the Ref’’s are on the take $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.
