Grantham should be suspended and fined–now

The University of Georgia, led by President Michael Adams, should run the school’s football program the way it sees best. Dr. Adams delegates that task to his athletics director, Greg McGarity, and his head football coach, Mark Richt.

But if I’m in charge at Georgia, three things would happen today:

**–Defensive coordinator Todd Grantham will be informed that he’ll be watching Saturday’s game with Idaho State from somewhere other than Sanford Stadium.

**–His wallet will also be considerably lighter because I’m taking a sizable chunk of his $750,000 salary.

**–He would know, in no uncertain terms, that if he ever repeated the behavior in question again and it could be proven beyond a shadow of a doubt, he would be fired on the spot.

It took a couple of days to sort out but the facts are no longer in dispute. Grantham, Georgia’s first-year defensive coordinator, did something in the Georgia-Florida game that is so far over the line that it can’t even be debated. He gave a student-athlete from another school, Florida kicker Chas Henry, the choke sign as Henry was preparing to kick the game winning field goal. Grantham was caught in a screen capture and the image went viral in no time at all.  Jeff Schultz showed you the video where Henry told Tracy Wolfson of CBS that coaches on the Georgia sidelines were telling him that he was going to choke.

Since the first posting of this before 8 a.m. it has come to my attention that there was some taunting going on from both sides. In other words, Grantham was provoked and lost his cool. In other words, he took the bait.

Okay. It has been duly noted. Every story has has two sides. I got it.

Still, this is totally unacceptable on any level. And I don’t want to hear this “heat of competition” crap from anybody. I don’t care how intense a game is. A coach does not attempt to intimidate a student-athlete from another school. You don’t do it. Period. I don’t care what the other side is doing.

This not about competition or the intensity of the Georgia-Florida rivalry. This is about the adults in charge acting like adults. Georgia fans complain to me all the time that they think Mark Richt’s program doesn’t have enough discipline. If the adults can’t control themselves how in the hell do we expect the players to do it?

Now in fairness I have to say that I have yet to meet Todd Grantham. He may well be a perfectly fine fellow. I hear that he is. His defense is starting to play better. They might play better still if he would concentrate on coaching them instead of trying to harrass players from another team.

This is unacceptable and embarrassing for the University of Georgia. Grantham said Tuesday wants to “move on.” I’m sure he does because he knows he screwed up big time.

But before Mr. Grantham moves on he is going to apologize to Chas Henry and apologize to the University of Florida. Then he’s going to apologize to the University of Georgia for embarrassing the institution on a national stage.

Then he will accept a one-game suspension and a fine and keep his mouth shut.

Grantham is a coach that is supposed to set an example for his players to abide by. Rainey is a student athlete that also did something stupid and was punished for his actions. Comparing the two and bringing Urban Meyer into the argument is totally missing the point.

For Grantham not to be punished for his childish act is just flat out wrong and Barnhart is right on the mark in his opinion.

What about the little arm in arm “dance” the uga players did on the sideline during the OT coin toss. Did they need 3 more hours credit in country line dancing. After the display a few years ago one might think that wouldn’t happen. It probably wasn’t shown on TV, should have been.

Tony, buy a dress. And while you’re in character ask your wife, daughter and/or sister what she thinks of Rainey’s affair and how it was handled from start to finish in Gainesville. Talk about classless. Take a look at some women’s cirises groups around Atlanta, and ask them what they think the chances are that Rainey will up the ante on his threat with a woman in his life sooner than later. Choke sign, get real. There is much more harassment and cursing going on back and forth during any game than merits even a consideration of a choke sign. It was not the slit throat sign, which was popular with thugs a few years ago. It was a choke sign. We use it on the golf course where etiquette supposedly reigns. Get some freaking perspective!

From an 85 grad and letterman, PLEASE AJC, setup some system where only grads of the University can respond and get all these Red and Black diehards who want to throw up Urban Myer negatives to offset a bad situation with Grantham, aka, coach sweetshirt’s choke hold.

It’s a bad scene and the response from McGarity to Richt, …..

This thing is really getting messy in Athens.

Meanwhile, how does MR sit there on the sideline listening to Coach Sweathshirt and his cussing, sailor antics. Van Gorder and Coach Sweatshirt are 2 different things all together.

And don’t get me started on Mike Bobo,

Furious over the state of the program.

I can’t believe it’s come to this point that we can’t even make a hand gesture in a competitive sport. Everybody in college football cried when CMR “supposedly” called for the touchdown celebration. CMR spent that whole off season apologizing to all the sportswriters and everyone that wanted one. WRONG, that took all of the fire out of that highly ranked team! Everyone made a big deal but nothing was said of Urban Meyer’s timeout to pay UGA back (JUST LIKE A WOMAN) happened.Seems like everytime someone tries to light a fire to the UGA football program, you guys disagree about how it is done. Classless, etc, etc.

Now today you say CTG went overboard with student-athletes and should be an adult. This is FOOTBALL and our biggest rival. He made a hand gesture that signified CHOKE and you treated the coach like he murdered someone (Or threaten to do so like Rainey which shouldn’t ever happen).

Bottom line, you point needs to be associated with female flag football and not SEC football. If I were these two coaches I would definitely ignore half of you sportswriters! That’s why you guys are on the side lines and they are coaches. I really like CMR and I think if he had an ounce of CTG’s personality we would steam role the competition.

Lastly, I follow your comments and like 90% of them. I understand that people disagree and everyone aren’t going to always be on the same page but Tony I really think you’re wrong on this one. If he’s suspended, he should definitely go back to the NFL. Atleast he can show some passion in a meaningful game. Just my two cents, have a nice day and GO DAWGS!!!

According to posters on this blog FrozenGator, that would just be the hip hop culture Mark Richt is embracing so that would be OK. Sportsmanship means nothing anymore apparently. I think most of the ardent supporters have truly given up at this time and just quit posting.

This is just a part of the process going on in Athens which will result in New, Fresh, Leadership for our program to move forward.

I agree, this has nothing to do about Rainey. What happens at UF I can personally care less. That’s between them. Again, this is football and for you people wanting to hang TG you might as well discipline 80% of the college coaches out there. How can some of you TOOLS actually act as if this is a 1st time this happened. Unbelievable. Tony B and Jeff S are such wussy boys it’s unbelievable.
People that are on here whining and crying obviously never played any kind of football before. There is no love loss between UF & UGA. Do you guys think that during an Auburn/Bama game that during a field goal to win a game that there is nothing but “pleasantries” for each other.

Hey Tony, not that I expect you to answer this but here goes. What about what CUM did at the end of the game? He was doing the “gator chomp” at UGA players and fans after the game. It wasn’t accidental…it was very cleary directed. Should he be suspended for a game and fined? Most UF fans I’ve spoke to have no problem with the CTG issue, and some even liked it. Why is the media, or more to the point the AJC, trying to make such a big deal about this? Of course there is no screen capture of what CUM did because it happened off camera. Maybe someone got a picture/video of it and it’ll surface at some point. If/when that surface what will the high and mighty TB have to say about how he is going to punish Meyer? give me a break…much ado about nothing. If I’m CTG I appoligize at the exact time hell freezes over.

Good grief! Take a chill pill! I don’t care what your opinion is and from the tone of these message boards, neither does most of the fans. Florida allowed a player who threatened to kill his girlfriend to play in this game. Nothing you can say will change that. This girl who then asked the judge not to charge him with anything serious displayed classic abuse victim signs. The judge in this case blew it. Now, when sometime down the road this boy (he will never be a man) hurts someone, we will see what Urban crier has to say about that!

Wow…….you media types are taking this WAY too far. So what if he did it? I like a little passion from my coaches and what he did was nothing. Everyone wants a jerk of a coach who will light a fire into his team, but when one comes along, you ridicule him. Get over yourselves already.

The again this is what I expect from those who think this is a major issue while at the same time looking the other way when the opposing coach did practically the same thing after the kick was made and doing the “chomp” at the UGA fan section. Never mind that the coach already showed his lack of testicular fortitude by allowing someone who threatened to kill his girlfriend to play in this game and be a critical factor. Sadly, true sports journalism – and all journalism for that matter – has gone by the wayside.

After watching the “Sportsmanship Video” of Coach Grantham, two words immediately come to mind:

Lame Kiffin.

The guy just has no class. “Heat of the moment?” That excuse sounds like something you hear these days to justify all kinds of stupid behavior; even crimes. No, this certainly isn’t a crime, but if the school wants to be seen as having “class”, there must be consequences when a representative of the school shows a lack a class.

Unchecked, the behavior becomes the public image of the school. Don’t believe it?

Then ask College Football Fans what “image” they have of the 2010 Fulmer Cup Champions.

You are so far off base on this… Did you ever play football?

What about coaches telling players to “knock their heads off”? Trying to psych the other team out is something I would expect out of a coach — same as Icing.

This is getting old. Seems like all the sports writers do lately is bash the Georgia Program. Why can’t they talk about some of the good, like how much the Dawgs have reduced their penalties this year. I saw on another post about how Coach Richt can’t make the throw, catch the pass or hold onto the ball for these guys. The players have to make the plays. I agree with this statement. I also believe football has a certain amount of luck that goes along with it – and this year, we just didn’t get the lucky breaks. I went to UGA and I think the coaches are doing a good job. The media is out-of-control, not the Georgia Football Program. Geez, enough already.
