Grantham should be suspended and fined–now

The University of Georgia, led by President Michael Adams, should run the school’s football program the way it sees best. Dr. Adams delegates that task to his athletics director, Greg McGarity, and his head football coach, Mark Richt.

But if I’m in charge at Georgia, three things would happen today:

**–Defensive coordinator Todd Grantham will be informed that he’ll be watching Saturday’s game with Idaho State from somewhere other than Sanford Stadium.

**–His wallet will also be considerably lighter because I’m taking a sizable chunk of his $750,000 salary.

**–He would know, in no uncertain terms, that if he ever repeated the behavior in question again and it could be proven beyond a shadow of a doubt, he would be fired on the spot.

It took a couple of days to sort out but the facts are no longer in dispute. Grantham, Georgia’s first-year defensive coordinator, did something in the Georgia-Florida game that is so far over the line that it can’t even be debated. He gave a student-athlete from another school, Florida kicker Chas Henry, the choke sign as Henry was preparing to kick the game winning field goal. Grantham was caught in a screen capture and the image went viral in no time at all.  Jeff Schultz showed you the video where Henry told Tracy Wolfson of CBS that coaches on the Georgia sidelines were telling him that he was going to choke.

Since the first posting of this before 8 a.m. it has come to my attention that there was some taunting going on from both sides. In other words, Grantham was provoked and lost his cool. In other words, he took the bait.

Okay. It has been duly noted. Every story has has two sides. I got it.

Still, this is totally unacceptable on any level. And I don’t want to hear this “heat of competition” crap from anybody. I don’t care how intense a game is. A coach does not attempt to intimidate a student-athlete from another school. You don’t do it. Period. I don’t care what the other side is doing.

This not about competition or the intensity of the Georgia-Florida rivalry. This is about the adults in charge acting like adults. Georgia fans complain to me all the time that they think Mark Richt’s program doesn’t have enough discipline. If the adults can’t control themselves how in the hell do we expect the players to do it?

Now in fairness I have to say that I have yet to meet Todd Grantham. He may well be a perfectly fine fellow. I hear that he is. His defense is starting to play better. They might play better still if he would concentrate on coaching them instead of trying to harrass players from another team.

This is unacceptable and embarrassing for the University of Georgia. Grantham said Tuesday wants to “move on.” I’m sure he does because he knows he screwed up big time.

But before Mr. Grantham moves on he is going to apologize to Chas Henry and apologize to the University of Florida. Then he’s going to apologize to the University of Georgia for embarrassing the institution on a national stage.

Then he will accept a one-game suspension and a fine and keep his mouth shut.

I appreciate CTG’s intensity because it has been lacking of the Georgia sideline for quite some time. However, I have to agree with you here, Tony. Harassing a player from the opposing team is pretty low. CTG owes Henry and the University of Florida a huge apology.

I honest to go God do not understand the furor over this. He wanted the kid to choke and miss a kick. He didn’t want to CHOKE the kid. Everybody needs to lighten up. I like Florida and I don’t see why I should be furious. What’s next? Fining coaches for cursing?

my post was lost!

2007- End Zone Dance

2008- Timeouts by Florida when up by 100

2009- Eye guoge by Spikes

2010- CTG choke signal at the end of the game

So Florida fans think this isn’t a rivalry? The game is quickly devolving into what dumb thing is the opponent going to do though.

Hard to believe that 4 days later this story is still getting play.

Barnhart, You’re quickly becoming Finebaum and squarely in my hack category. Anything for webpage hits huh? Get over it, you’re making a mountain out of a molehill, he didn’t actually choke the kid and there wasn’t anyone in the country wearing Red and Black (or Garnet and Black for that matter) that was thinking anything different. Lot of people in this country in general need to put on their big boy pants.

I guess you don’t have a problem with Urban Gator Chomping at Georgia fans after the victory? No big write up about that? Bet you could get some hits for that. Hack.

Stop grousing about the work of grown men that actually do good in the lives of young men who are human and occasionally have an error in judgement. Get back to your usual spam of promoting tv/radio spots and books.

I’m stunned……This is a load of bull………………..Tony has been hanging out at the AJC to long.
I thought I had logged on to Cynthia Tuckers space at first……I’m waiting for the SEC to reprimand us for taking the game into overtime…..After all, it is Florida….We should just lose in regulation……..I wish the rest of the staff cared as much…..You can Count Grantham gone, back to the NFL if there is no lock out…….He has fallen into a staff of softness. Tony, I hear, on TV, on a regular basis Paul Johnson cussing like a roofer on a 110 degree day and calling HIS OWN PLAYERS MF’s………..Where are you on this ?

What Grantham did was stupid and immature but I am not sure that it deserves a suspension and fine. However, right now he has suffered ZERO consequences – Grantham hasn’t even made an apology. The idea that Grantham’s behavior was “in the heat of the battle” and so should be forgiven is ludicrous. If a 44 year old coach can’t control his own behavior how can he control his players’ behavior. You can bet that if one of the defensive players had an unsportsman like conduct penalty that Grantham would instill some punishment for them.

Tony,
You should be fired for writing this article. Todd Grantham was just exercising his rights given to him by the Articles of Confederation.

Chris Rainey murdered his girlfriend and Urban Meyer gave him a medal. Urban Meyer severely beat several members of the media, and has threatened the Florida administration with further beatings if they criticize him.

Mark Richt is a beautiful God-fearing man who runs the cleanest program around, and meanwhile Gainesville continues to be the murder and kidnapping capital of the Southeast.

In this day and age, people are tried and convicted in a court of public opinion for what someone thinks another is thinking. That’s a sad testament to this PC bs. Actions do speak louder than words. CLK said what he said behind a mic, taped and heard around the world. He had to answer. In some cases, his team backed him up but the point is, he said it for all to hear. THAT IS SWAGGER. This is more akin to flashing gang signs or using the most recent tabooed in the sportsworld finger slice across the throat from a grown man that ought to know better.

No one is denying Grantham’s right to be stupid but he’s got to answer for it and then we all move along and await the next act of stupid out there.

Tony,

I usually enjoy your articles but this one is a waste of your time and the readers. Football is a violent sport and I have all the scars to prove it. Coach Grantham was expressing an emotional desire for the kicker to choke and miss. I don’t think anyone who is rational thinks this warrants a suspension or fine. My wife who cannot stand football thinks this ludicrous. This is too much political correctness.

Coach Grantham just needs to say I am sorry if anyone took offense and go on. By the way I would like to know if you ever played this game at any level. It’s not a criterion for doing your job but it certainly helps.

Your articles are usually rational and on the money. You rarely seem biased. This is not a biased article just seems way of base. Keep up the good analysis you usually bring to the table.

I generally agree with you on most things UGA but not this.

BIG TIME much ado about nothing.

Had he run out onto the field and done that to the kid, had he missed, sure.

To that end, I think calling time outs, late in a game that you’re up by 30, is a FAR bigger punk move.

This was nothing and I think, in some ways, TG did more than was needed in his statement.

In any case, how’s that Rainey research coming? Have you found the court proceedings where he became “an admitted domestic abuser” yet?

ARDawg – you got me dead to rights. I’m a homer Tech fan. Aren’t there a couple other ’stock’ details you left out of your canned Dawg response? I don’t think you hit your quota of calling me out for being a nerd, gayturd, classless, DDR-loving, Bama trailer livin, liberal pansy, pot-smoking, hippie, from the state of California that’s just about to fall in the ocean anyway so good riddance. Did that cover it all?

Actually, not trying to quell your speech at all. It’s really quite entertaining and fun to read. As far as the election, not sure how an election ‘wouldn’t go well for me.’ If you’re asking if my candidates won or not, I generally split my vote down the middle across both parties since it’s hard for me to believe one group is either completely right or completely wrong. So I guess last night went both good and bad for me, but maybe a little more good in the house and governor races.

UGA makes me sick. You applaud Mark Richt for his integrity and class, yet you expect it from no one else? No wonder your coaches act like buffoons, your players spend more time in jail than on the practice field, your AD decides he should be wearing women’s underwear while driving drunk and crying, your President is allegedly misappropriating funds, and your fans completely trash your campus. You want to right the ship? You want to play in the BIG game? How about you start demanding a certain standard from all those associated from your organization? Seeing your comments, it’s no wonder most of you want to get rid of Mark Richt–he can’t beat Florida, he isn’t a good coach–NO, he has class and he obviously doesn’t fit in at the University [sic] of Georgia.

DEAD ON Tony, from an 1985 grad and letterman, for Grantham to say I’ve said all I’m going to say when an apology was suggested?

This thing is looking very similar to Ray Goff when he went thru def. co-ord and the problem was the leadership at the top.

When “coach sweetshirt” was brought in, I thought he kinda looked liked a bit overweight, blowhard, cussing…. kind of a coach. Indeed that’s what we got, nothing really wrong with it but man what does Richt think with his act, while coach sweetshirt is cussing, doing choke holds…..

This thing is starting to look a bit hypocritical as well.

It’s well beyond the stage of no return as far as Bobo heading up the offense. He’s so inconsistent, predictable to much, no imagination, calling a 5 yrd button hook on the first play and gets picked…..

Aron Murray and Orson Charles will never see a ring, just like the greatest receiver ever to suit up at GA, AJ Green with this coaching regime.

Grantham knows he was brought in to fix the defense and had just seen the worst Florida offense in 20 years run up and down the field like Oregon. It wasn’t the heat of competition that sent him to Wackville, it was the heat of knowing his defense had laid another egg in the most important game of the year. For a program that gets embarrassed every week by one thing or another, this is really small stuff.

What a joke of an Article Tony!

You’re so full-o-crap that if you sneeze diarrhea will come out of your nose!

According to you what Grantham did is horrible, but HC’s can call TOs and try to ice the opposing kickers, and even further there is no basis for claim that he tried to “intimidate” a Student-Athl. because the Kicker from Florida knew that there was NO WAY that the DC of UGAy would do anything to him, at that point the Fla. Kicker should be focused on the task at hand and shouldn’t even see the DC that is a good 35 yards away from him.

Much worse than what Grantham did are all the gimmicky Offenses like Florida’s and even WORSE Ga. Tech’s where HCs/OCs can design plays with “borderline illegal” crack-back Blocks below the knees that put Defensive Players at risk for serious injury.

A DC that makes a gesture that is NOT the middle-finger is not even worth writing about, Grantham coaches BIG-BOY-CFB, not Pop Warner FB where the players get together after the games and eat Hot Dogs & Burgers from someone’s Mom whose turn it is to work the Concession Stand.

Another example of head coach laughing off the example set by his staff. A leader encourages poor behavior through his own behavior – e.g. telling team to get a unsportsmanlike conduct penalty a couple years ago OR not publicly admonishing the immature actions of his staff. Previous A.D. set the tone and it continues. Richt needs to learn to implement ‘tough love’ on staff and players. He’s letting the pressure of not winning alter his morals. I think he knows what’s right, he’s just blind right now.

Chaz Henry is not your typical weenie kicker. The kid also played QB in highschool and is used to pressur. He didnt miss the kicks against LSU and MSU because he choked, he missed them because he is a punter who is filling in as a place kicker. Tony – You are right on. With this kind of behavior from a coach how can we expect the players not to have on and off field problems. “In the heat of battle” argument doesn’t hold water. If it did there would be no reason to ever get upset with a player called for a personal foul on the field and “in the heat of the battle”. I am very disappointed that no apology was offered and that Richt swept it under the carpet also. I wouldn’t accept this type of behavior at any level from PeeWee to the Pros. I think your suggestion of suspension and fine would send a message to the whole team. By the way, this is a UGA issue and has nothing to do with any player or coach from any other team. We should make the right decision regardless of other’s actions. That is the definition of character.

“Constitutional rights” do not apply in this circumstance.

The right to free speech does not guarantee that you can’t get reprimanded by your employer. Try cussing out your boss and see how much he respects your “right to free speech.”

The “right to free speech” only guarantees that you can’t be arrested when using free speech in public, but even this does not always apply. You cannot yell “bomb!” on an airplane or “fire!” in a theater.

“Constitutional rights” do not necessarily apply in the private sector.
