Georgia wins; Mizzou, Michigan State, Utah lose

The Fearless Friday Forecast:

1. Georgia vs. Florida (Jacksonville): Yes, I’ve seen and written the numbers about Urban Meyer and what he has done with more than a week to prepare a team. But as many of you pointed out, those numbers tend to be pretty good when you’ve got better players than the team you’re facing after the open date. Georgia has better players at quarterback (Aaron Murray), wide receiver (A.J. Green), running back (Washaun Ealey) and the offensive line is way better. Great quarterbacks are defined by this game and Murray, the redshirt freshman  from Tampa, puts his stamp on his first Georgia-Florida game by leading the Bulldogs to a victory. Georgia 24, Florida 20.

2. Auburn at Ole Miss: Yes, it’s okay for Auburn to be a little nervous about this road trip because in each of the past three weeks No. 1 has gotten beat away from home. This won’t be a dominating performance by Auburn because the last two weeks against Arkansas and LSU have been pretty draining. In fact, I think it will be close because Houston Nutt, the Ole Miss coach, has a way of winning these kinds of games. I just don’t think the Rebels defense is playing well enough to slow down this Auburn offense. Auburn 31, Ole Miss 24.

3. Tennessee at South Carolina: Freshman running back Marcus Lattimore is returning to the lineup after sitting out the past six quarters with an injury. That is all you need to know because when Lattimore plays South Carolina is a pretty good team. South Carolina 35, Tennessee 10.

4. Kentucky at Mississippi State: We haven’t even gotten to Halloween but already Mississippi State is bowl eligible (6-2). The Bulldogs have figured out exactly who they are. They run the football with quarterback Chris Relf and running back Vick Ballard. They are so much better on defense with new coordinator Manny Diaz running the show. Kentucky just can’t stop anybody on defense. Mississippi State 31, Kentucky 20.

5. Miami at Virginia:  Okay, Hurricanes. It’s time to show us something. You got taken to the woodshed by Florida State on Oct. 9 at Miami. You took care of business last week at home against North Carolina. You are still very much in the ACC Coastal race as you  go to Georgia Tech on Nov. 13 and host Virginia Tech on Nov. 20. Saturday’s game against the Cavaliers is the kind where you usually slop it around on the road. Step up, U. Show us that you’re for real. Miami 35, Virginia 7.

6. Michgian State at Iowa: The Spartans, ranked No. 5 in the BCS, have visions of getting into the national championship mix at best and a strip to the Rose Bowl at worst. But Iowa is in a must-win situation after falling to Wisconsin last week. Sparty hasn’t won at Kinnick Stadium since 1989. Michigan State’s run comes to an end. Iowa 24, Michigan State 21.

7. Missouri at Nebraska: Missouri (7-0) knocked off No. 1 Oklahoma last week and is off to its best start in 50 years. But Nebraska has to win at home if the Cornhuskers want to get to the Big 12 championship game. Another undefeated team goes down. Nebraska 21, Missouri 17.

8. Utah at Air Force: Everybody in the country is talking about next week’s game when the No. 8 Utes (7-0) host No. 4 TCU (8-0). It says here that Utah is going to get caught looking ahead. Air Force, despite a 38-7 loss to TCU last week, still leads the nation in rushing (326.5 ypg). Air Force 24, Utah 23.

9. Oregon at Southern California: The Ducks looked absolutely unstoppable last week when they simply destroyed UCLA. This is USC’s bowl game because the Trojans are on probation. But this is not a vintage Southern California defense as it is No. 87 nationally, giving up over 400 yards a game. Monte Kiffin is one of the best defensive coordinators of this generation.  But he doesn’t have an answer for Oregon. Oregon 35, USC 20.

10.  Clemson at Boston College: What a difference a week makes. Last Saturday Clemson running back Andre Ellington shredded the Georgia Tech defense for two long touchdowns runs, part of 236 total rushing yards against the Yellow Jackets. On Saturday the Tigers face a Boston College defense that is giving up only 83 yards rushing per game and 2.6 per carry. The Eagles are ranked fourth nationally. Thanks to N.C. State’s win over Florida State last night, Clemson is back in the chase for the ACC Atlantic championship. Clemson has to take care of business on the road. Clemson 21, Boston College 17.

Tony — The most interesting game of the weekend is Miss State-Kentucky; I’m happy for Mullen and Miss State (except when they show up in Tuscaloosa in a few weeks). And this game is in glamorous Starkville. Very interesting. I see you picked the two wiinners (Mizzou and Michigan State) to become the next losers. Interesting. Remember, both are motivated and have the big MO with them–but both are also on the road. We’ll see.

South Carolina has averaged around a 17 point spread in their wins this year. To Spurrier, this is pitiful but acceptable considering his QB has a Jekyll and Hyde personality. He dreams of a 40 point spread and will attempt one in Columbia Saturday, even at the expense of running his big horse lame. His year long nightmare of Tennessee in Black thumping his Gamehens in 2009 on Halloween night still haunts him. Although the guy that rode the Tennessee sidelines last year is long gone, Coach Steve’s revenge burns strong. There is no team Spurrier would rather whack and whack hard than the team that represents the state of his birth that shunned him way back when and ignores his self proclaimed greatness now. By all accounts, Darth should get his W but like TB, I don’t pick against my boys often. UT 27 Darth 21…

I can’t remember the last time I was less excited about a Florida-Georgia game. Even thought the Gators are still in the running for the SEC East Division title, that just doesn’t seem to matter much. Thankfully, I am not the Gators head coach, and the guy who is knows that the future of a great program is made or lost in games like this one. The Gators should win this game on talent alone, but having suffered one blowout and two disappointingly close losses, it’s time for Urban Meyer to pull a “Gene Ellenson” and motivate these young Gators to rise from their pissing, moaning and feeling sorry for themselves and play for the future.

I do feel better for one reason, however. Every time Tony picks UGA or Tech in a competitive game, it turns out to be a forlorn hope. Go, Tony!

There was no violence involved, he had no prior history, and he was suspended for half of the season. He should be benched. If I am not mistaken, he is also the player that got burned on the winning touchdown in the Ark game. We can win if we have a corner we can put in the game instead of Cuff, if we don’t Meyer will throw the ball to any receiver that Cuff is covering because it is a sure catch usually resulting in a TD and FL will win the game.

Between Mullen and Chizik the Gator “alumni” are doing well for their new teams. Former Gator walk-on Chizik has silenced all doubters and made Auburn a legitimate SEC contended by rebuilding the Tigers’ traditional strength: defense. Former Gator coordinator Mullen has certainly exceeded expectations in second season at MSU.

The Gators are suffering from a variety of problems this year, including the loss of Mullen. But coaches come and go from great programs all the time; you just have to deal with it. The Gators are loaded with young talent on both sides of the ball, and it’s time for Meyer to rally the troops and start building the foundation for another run in 2011 and 2012.

In case you folks haven’t figured it out yet, Tony B is a homer. He doesn’t need to ruffle the feathers to get people to read/react to his columns, so why pick against the locals only to have their diehard fans rip him a new arsehole?

TOs and special teams will certainly help GA vs. FL. They can still win if they don’t get last week’s UK TO/Special teams experience, but it will be tough solely b/c of UF’s track record in this one over the past couple of decades.

Also, the NCAA has all its financial eggs in the SEC basket, thus the BCS will make sure an SEC team is in the title game. They’ve already set the table by leapfrogin Auburn, and not dropping Alabama enough. Think about it:
Alabama gets its butt kicked, and barely drops. Boise State, TCU, and Utah keep winning and are getting jumped by a team that started the season ranked below them. What have BS,TCU,Utah done to say they are not just as good or better than preseason predictions? Now, should one of them SQUEAK out a last minute/OT win or, god forbid LOSE a game, how far will they drop?

Chizik and Mullen have both done a fabulous job this season, but Mullen has brought his troops further and faster, given the relative talent levels of the two teams. Notwithstanding Auburn’s recent problems, there was not a day in the past decade when the Tigers didn’t have twice the talent on paper that the Underdogs had on their roster.

When you play in the best BCS conference in the nation and haven’t lost a regular season game in 2 years you are not going to drop very far in the polls. Maybe in the Gator world assault (threats of violence with reasonable capability to carry out the threat, which is what Rainey did under the specific classification of stalking) is not violence, but in most civilized societies assault is violence. Also, from the stories from Rainey’s recruitment and freshman year, he is not a “good kid.” Please, remove the ugly orange and blue glasses before commenting on an issue that really is beyond simple football.

anything but an objective viewpoint…….

Sports Illustrated’s poll predictions mathces Bama and Oregon for the NC.

THAT would be one of the more interesting matchups that I could envision.

Oregon’s fastbreak offense would hamper Bama’s substitution pattern, but more importantly, limit their blitz packages. Bama’s best chance would be to control the ball, and keep Oregon’s offense on the sidelines.

Here’s hoping.

Morning folks. All of the SEC contenders are certainly hoping Tony’s right this week. We need Mizzou and MSU out of the way. Ieteresting stat note from Bruce Feldman via Twitter:

Cam Newton is hitting 74% of his passes vs. the blitz & has an 8-0 TD-INT ratio. No blitz: he’s at 62% and 5-5

As many of us have said, putting pressure on him, especially off the edges, is the wrong way to attack him. He’s big and strong enough to escape, and then your defense is out of position when he takes off. Better to trap him in the pocket and wait for his mistakes. Send pressure straight up the middle if you’re sending it at all then contain the edges. Mainly, focus on keeping him in front of you and sound tackling (like a good RB) vs. trying to get a big hit in the backfield (like a classic QB).

Because of the ESPN-SEC contract, SEC wins directly (financially) benefit ESPN in the form of increased viewership which leads to increased advertising revenue. I doubt the head hunchos at ESPN tell the commentators to favor the SEC but, some of the commentators can see the big picture.

We’ll be able to run on those guys if that were to happen. Also, give a good coaching staff a month to prepare and they’ll get the defensive players accustomed to the pace (see 2010 Rose Bowl vs. OSU, held to 17 pts.)

3rdN8,

That is so true. The coaches and their staffs are what set the SEC apart from the rest of the country. It’s gonna be hard for any program, even Bama, to win the SEC year after year, because of this elite coaching. In just 3 or 4 years, our guy has gone from being considered as one of the best in the SEC, to being on a hot (or warm, at least) seat.

ARK, UK, AU, Bama, MSU, and (maybe) UT all have great new coaches with even better assistants. Then you have three others who have won NCs: Saban, Myer, and Miles.

Richt needs to become a CEO-type head coach, and get a NFL whiz kid to come and develope his offense in order to compete for SEC titles again.

Max, we’ve lost 9 games in a season and a half mostly because of our predictable offense and playcalling. Kiffen said, “Georgia is the easiest team on our (UT) schedule to prepare for …..”

In our recent games vs UT and Vandy, Bobo put Murray in a version of the spread a lot more and he and the offense thrived. Not so much vs UK, but I understand he wanted to run clock and UK has a terrible run-defense.

Bobo needs to go back to coaching our QBs, teaching footwork and reading defenses. We need a real OC, who can build an offense around our best QB in years. Murray is a weapon, and putting him in a the Power I set, handing off is crazy, especially with all of the 3-and-outs it produces.

I suggest you take your “Red and Black glasses” off, and quit banging the drum to punish Chris Rainey more than he already has been. every team morphs….into something else……

I always find it intersting when someone predicts a future outcome based on a game(s) that occurred two months ago.

The premise is: If Team X beat Team Y by 17 on Sept 4, and Team Z beat Team Y by 3 on Sept 11, then Team X is a 14 point favorite over Team Z.

But teams morph…into something else. Some players develop as the season progresses, some players get injured, some players become total head cases. Some teams develop chemistry, and some teams experience meltdowns.

The only thing that matters is next Saturday.

That having been said, Chris Rainey has already paid an appropriate price for his level of misconduct, and that suspension, misdemeanor conviction and half-season suspension were all entirely appropriate under the circumstances. For the circuit court or university to impose greater penalties than they already have, would be to hold Rainey to a different and harder standard than any other University of Florida student or 21-year-old Gainesville resident. I agree with all of those picks except UGA vs. Florida and Kentucky vs. MSU.

I could see Kentucky knocking off MSU. They seem to do better when they are under the radar.

UGA might have a better offense than Florida, but the Gator defense is pretty talented. Also, I think Florida’s program is in much better shape than UGA’s. They just landed the 1# recruiting class in the nation, and that will kick in eventually. The Gators are coming off a bye week: and while I don’t think that is enough time to fix all of their offensive problems, its certainly enough time to expolit some of the weaknesses in the Dawgs defense, which lacks talent. I can also see Richt and Bobo giving this Gator team too much respect and playing conservative. Never underestimate our idiotic coaching staff in games like this: they have a way of pulling defeat out of victory. I think the Gators are a 7-5 football team at best. Be that as it may, I just don’t see them losing 4 in a row especially coming off a bye week. I like the Gators in this one as much as I hate to say it.

Atlanta Gator,

I don’t think emotion will be a factor in this game, just execution. I would like my Dawgs chances better if the Gators had beaten LSU and MSU and UGA had only beaten Vandy and Kentucky by a TD. In that scenario, I could see Florida thinking they are better than they are and then losing to UGA. But I think that since your team has been down, they’ll be motivated enough to want to get off the snide vs. UGA. I think Florida views UGA in the same way UGA views Tech, in that they think that is a game they should win 90% of the time. I think Gator players, even in a down year; feel that they are good enough to still beat UGA who is also having a down year. And like I mentioned before, if I felt like we had compentent coaching I would like our chances in this game, but we don’t. I think if the Dawgs continue stick to their game plan, they can beat the Gators. But Bobo has proven to me that he’s incapable of just sticking with what works. I can see him doing something really dumb like running the Wildcat formation on the goal line, which would get knocked for a 5 yard loss and totally kill our momentum. Bad coaching is such a liability in games like this.

Wrong. USC will score 40+ against the Duckeys. If they hold Oregon to the 35 as you predict, They win.

As usual you base your opinions on what you read in the stats. If you had seen the improvement in the USC defense over the past 2 games (esp Cal) you would know it as much about the Duckeys defense holding Matt Barkley and the USC offense as the USC defense holding Oregon.

The over/under is 70, bet the over; USC 49 UO 35 in a shootout. Barkley may throw for 400+ this game. He has 20 TDs /4 INTs. He’ll be 26/4 after the Duck Hunt.

The Georgia-Florida game could be decided by the kicking game, and we know who has the advantage there.

As for USC-Oregon, it’s Lane Kiffin’s Little Big Horn and he’s gonna get scalped by the Ducks. I know their nickname doesn’t sound intimidating but their offense is amazing!

I did have one more comment.

In the interest of political correctness…..

Now that Ole Miss has adopted a more, less controversial (please note the oxymoron) team mascot of “Rebel Black Bear”, or “Black Bear Rebels”…..doesn’t everyone agree that it just makes good sense to do a complete cleansing? I mean, let’s get rid of the “Ole” part of the name as well. That’s clearly a slam at the “old” people….and senior citizens have enough problems.

Thank you for your support.

3rdN8—-I’m not adverse to casting stones, but in this case there was a bit of an overreaction. Rainey had been knocked unconscious the previous day and was suffering from a severe concussion. No prior history of violence or threats of violence against women. Probably would never have been arrested if he hadn’t mouthed off to the cops, which was also oddly out of character. In a better world, he probably should have been under medical supervision, not arguing with his “girlfriend.” There was also the weirdness that was related to the fact that the woman in question was significantly older and apparently is some kind of Gators groupie. It wasn’t the woman, but the woman’s sister who actually called the cops, and the woman in question wanted no part in bringing charges. Frankly, given the facts, it would have been a grotesque judicial travesty if this kid had been convicted of a felony.

That is correct. Again, the favorite wins straight up over 70% of the time. Point is, Vegas (not the bookies but the consensus of the money) usually picks the right team to win. Not always, of course, but usually. An interesting note about that is something I read, and I can’t remember where now, that showed where Vegas is right almost 90% of the time when Number 2 is favored over Number 1 in college football i.e. Florida over Ohio St. in the 2009 BCSCG. Small sample size since that situation doesn’t happen very often, but interesting nonetheless.

Top 10 recruiting classes during the past five years:
1. USC
2. Florida
3. Alabama
4. LSU
5. Texas
6. Georgia
7. Oklahoma
8. Florida State
9. Notre Dame
10. Ohio State

How the current BCS Top 10 falls in the same recruiting rankings:
1. Auburn (11th in recruiting)
2. Oregon (22nd)
3. Boise State (not ranked)
4. TCU (59th)
5. Michigan State (33rd)
6. Missouri (32nd)
7. Alabama (third)
8. Utah (tied for 52nd)
9. Oklahoma (seventh)
10. Wisconsin (42nd)

How the SEC West should look based on recruiting rankings alone:
1. Alabama (third in recruiting)
2. LSU (fourth)
3. Auburn (11th)
4. Ole Miss (18th)
5. Arkansas (29th)
6, Mississippi State (37th)

How the SEC East should look based on recruiting rankings alone:
1. Florida (second)
2. Georgia (sixth)
3. Tennessee (14th)
4. South Carolina (15th)
5. Kentucky (tied for 52nd)
6. Vanderbilt (not ranked)

Georgia beat 3 SEC teams. I dont care how you cut it, its still the SEC and those “lesser” teams are still more talented than any ACC of Big Least teams. To try and degrade who we lost to is a little foolish when you are playing SEC opponents.

And for the Gators that wanna talk about how you lost to superior teams, two of your three loses came at home. LSU is not that good and will be exposed at least twice more by the end of the season and MSU is, historically, the cellar dweller of the West. Your four wins Miami (OH), USF, Kentucky, and Tennessee. And of the two teams we have both played, UGA was by far more convincing in their wins.

Great recruiting classes for the big name schools can be a curse also . Look how many Juniors go pro and along with the normal senior class it can hurt a great school with great players still there because it is so disruptive. The new sophomores and junior have to learn to be starters and the Freshman class has to learn the play book. So it is very disruptive for a team to get great recruiting classes every year. Schools life South Carolina want have players leave early and most of their Juniors and senior have been there for 4 or 5 years.
The other big reason that many of the great recruiting class schools struggle is because they lose their coordinators or head coach on a regular basis and the players have to all learn new plays or develop new philosophies. Georgia, Florida, Southern Cal , Notre Dame , Tennessee just to name a few.

76-DAWG – Counterpoint to part of your analysis: Auburn, with multiple coaching changes, new QB, new system; and Georgia, whose DC coordinator change is a positive (albeit a new 3-4 is part of the explanation there.)

With consistently good recruiting, there should not be talent gaps due to 3 year players. Florida is the most surprising, and it is in part to losing the coordinators, as you said.

Oregon, Michigan St., and Missouri in the current top 10 with 5 year recruiting rankings in the 20s and 30s, along with coaching stability are getting the job done.

USC didn’t have a great year last year under Carroll, plus he left a stink bomb for Kiffin with the sanctions. Texas projected to be much better this year. Tennessee is a recovery effort from a devastating situation.

The common is misconception is that it was all about Tebow. The truth is that is was Tebow + excellent skill players (e.g. Harvin) + Dan Mullen.

2007 = Tebow + Mullen – excellent skill players = No titles
2008 = Tebow + Mullen + (Harvin, Murphy, Hernandez) = SEC and BCS Championships

Interesting article, Delbert. Of course, the author says that Boise’s classes are underrated because they have had eight players taken in the NFL (two 1st rounders) over a 6 year period. Not getting his logic since most of the top schools will have three times that many, some having six drafted just about every year. Miami put six in the first round one year.

5IML, I’d submit that they would have had a title in 2009 if Saban was still in Miami. I thought they were clearly the number two team. The problem from my perspective is that the whole offense was built for and around Tebow, much like our little brothers this year with Cam. Texas struggled when VY left and now when McCoy left. Saban’s offense is more balanced and less QB driven, which I think is a good thing.

In the long run, a balanced attack is definitely a more sound strategy. But most fans would auction their giblets for one BCS championship followed by 9 winless seasons.

I’m not sure Saban is as offensively conservative as we think. Over the summer, during one of BAMA’s 40K behind-the-scenes specials, Saban said you make players play within your defensive system but you tailor offensive systems to the strengths of the players. I think we will see the offense change with AJ or Sims.

I think the playcalling might change, not sure about the offense. And the playcalling itself might not even have to. I think Greg lacks confidence sometimes, holding the ball when a gunslinger might make a play downfield. Of course, that gunslinger mentality creates INTs too. No dreaming here. Simple roster or statistical analysis shows Bama to be the better team. They had an awful quarter in Columbia that changed the entire game. Hard to dig out of a 3 TD hole on the road against a good team. Like I said yeaterday, Cam and friends are gonna get theirs on November 26th. Deep down every one of you Aubies know it too. Florida looks terrible, but until UGA proves they can beat them, then how can you fault anyone for picking UF to win when you’re only a 2pt fav.

You will beat Idaho State.

UGA beat us last year and we will be amped to get you guys in our house this year. Up until last year, then road team had the most success in recent years. That was not the case last year, and I don’t think that will be the case this year.

Got news for you. Danny Sheridan who picks the opening betting lines for USA Today and several large Vegas casinos stated a couple of days ago that if the Iron Bowl was played today that Bama would be a 5 1/2 pt favorite. Seems the smart money is on Bama considering all the narrow escapes AU has had. Sooner or later the luck runs out and your one man team gets exposed. I’m hoping you guys can stay undefeated until the beatdown on Nov. 26th but somehow I just don’t think that will happen. Hope I’m wrong though.

KimZ’Package,

Ole Miss has a very outside chance of pulling the upset. Call me crazy but I really think UGA has a legit shot at beating them. You have to realize that AU hasn’t really dominated anyone. They beat 2 teams by 3, beat LSU by 7, beat USC by 8 after Garcia fumbled the game away, had to rally to beat a Clemson team that also fumbled the game away, and was losing to Ark in the 4th qtr before Ark fumbled the game away on 3 straight turnovers. They’re just not that good and have been sliding by a lot of teams.

To add to that just how good can an Auburn team be that only beat Miss state by 3 and beat the kentucky mildcats on a field goal on the last play of the game. Not to mention all those other narrow wins. Their just living on borrowed time and sooner or later it will catch up to them. It always does.

There have been some interesting posts about the betting line and what does that mean for who is most likely to win.
In the Sack Schultz competition, anyone who took the favorite (most popular among the people in the competition) would have gone 87-33. That’s the favorite winning 72% of the time. Latest line has UGA at -2.5, for what that’s worth.

The Vols are gonna continue to suffer as the year finishes but look for them to be solid next year. Doubt the Simms boy will be back in the saddle though. It is good to see the Dooley name back in the SEC. CMR is a fine man & a very good coach hopefully for my friends Donnie & shane #1 that he is still strolling the sidelines between the hedges next year.

The author of this article may be a fine newspaperman but his prediction that the dogs will beat the Gators is foolishly goofy. We will humiliate the dogs, again. The funny part is that we do not have to play a bunch of thugs like georgia does to win either. The dogs have no class, are not very good, and have no chance whatsoever against the Gators. We will be playing our backups by the 3rd quarter unless our great coach decides to run up the score, which he should for the arrogance that the dogs show every year. You dogs should know who your betters are, you should be thankful the Gators allow you to even be on the same field with us. Kim Z- Au may have a better overall offense as far as the kind of numbers they’re putting up, but all they do pretty much is run. KY. may not be as good of a team overall, but they do have a good offense. Cam is what makes AU good, but KY has more of a passing attack. Even though AU is undefeated…they did almost beat AU. Not saying UGA will beat AU, but you never know. UGA has won the last 4, & 2 of those times UGA was having a bad yr. where a lot of people didn’t think they would win. Must be a self appointed position. Now you’re covering your tail about Richt. “unless the coach wants to make a change”??? He’ll make a change about like Tuberville did at Auburn. Fired in the meeting and presented to the press as “it was time for me to move on.”. What a joke! Richt is gone and you’ll look as stupid as ever.

But Tony, I thought UGA wins "Because They Gotta Win"
