Georgia wins; Mizzou, Michigan State, Utah lose

The Fearless Friday Forecast:

1. Georgia vs. Florida (Jacksonville): Yes, I’ve seen and written the numbers about Urban Meyer and what he has done with more than a week to prepare a team. But as many of you pointed out, those numbers tend to be pretty good when you’ve got better players than the team you’re facing after the open date. Georgia has better players at quarterback (Aaron Murray), wide receiver (A.J. Green), running back (Washaun Ealey) and the offensive line is way better. Great quarterbacks are defined by this game and Murray, the redshirt freshman  from Tampa, puts his stamp on his first Georgia-Florida game by leading the Bulldogs to a victory. Georgia 24, Florida 20.

2. Auburn at Ole Miss: Yes, it’s okay for Auburn to be a little nervous about this road trip because in each of the past three weeks No. 1 has gotten beat away from home. This won’t be a dominating performance by Auburn because the last two weeks against Arkansas and LSU have been pretty draining. In fact, I think it will be close because Houston Nutt, the Ole Miss coach, has a way of winning these kinds of games. I just don’t think the Rebels defense is playing well enough to slow down this Auburn offense. Auburn 31, Ole Miss 24.

3. Tennessee at South Carolina: Freshman running back Marcus Lattimore is returning to the lineup after sitting out the past six quarters with an injury. That is all you need to know because when Lattimore plays South Carolina is a pretty good team. South Carolina 35, Tennessee 10.

4. Kentucky at Mississippi State: We haven’t even gotten to Halloween but already Mississippi State is bowl eligible (6-2). The Bulldogs have figured out exactly who they are. They run the football with quarterback Chris Relf and running back Vick Ballard. They are so much better on defense with new coordinator Manny Diaz running the show. Kentucky just can’t stop anybody on defense. Mississippi State 31, Kentucky 20.

5. Miami at Virginia:  Okay, Hurricanes. It’s time to show us something. You got taken to the woodshed by Florida State on Oct. 9 at Miami. You took care of business last week at home against North Carolina. You are still very much in the ACC Coastal race as you  go to Georgia Tech on Nov. 13 and host Virginia Tech on Nov. 20. Saturday’s game against the Cavaliers is the kind where you usually slop it around on the road. Step up, U. Show us that you’re for real. Miami 35, Virginia 7.

6. Michgian State at Iowa: The Spartans, ranked No. 5 in the BCS, have visions of getting into the national championship mix at best and a strip to the Rose Bowl at worst. But Iowa is in a must-win situation after falling to Wisconsin last week. Sparty hasn’t won at Kinnick Stadium since 1989. Michigan State’s run comes to an end. Iowa 24, Michigan State 21.

7. Missouri at Nebraska: Missouri (7-0) knocked off No. 1 Oklahoma last week and is off to its best start in 50 years. But Nebraska has to win at home if the Cornhuskers want to get to the Big 12 championship game. Another undefeated team goes down. Nebraska 21, Missouri 17.

8. Utah at Air Force: Everybody in the country is talking about next week’s game when the No. 8 Utes (7-0) host No. 4 TCU (8-0). It says here that Utah is going to get caught looking ahead. Air Force, despite a 38-7 loss to TCU last week, still leads the nation in rushing (326.5 ypg). Air Force 24, Utah 23.

9. Oregon at Southern California: The Ducks looked absolutely unstoppable last week when they simply destroyed UCLA. This is USC’s bowl game because the Trojans are on probation. But this is not a vintage Southern California defense as it is No. 87 nationally, giving up over 400 yards a game. Monte Kiffin is one of the best defensive coordinators of this generation.  But he doesn’t have an answer for Oregon. Oregon 35, USC 20.

10.  Clemson at Boston College: What a difference a week makes. Last Saturday Clemson running back Andre Ellington shredded the Georgia Tech defense for two long touchdowns runs, part of 236 total rushing yards against the Yellow Jackets. On Saturday the Tigers face a Boston College defense that is giving up only 83 yards rushing per game and 2.6 per carry. The Eagles are ranked fourth nationally. Thanks to N.C. State’s win over Florida State last night, Clemson is back in the chase for the ACC Atlantic championship. Clemson has to take care of business on the road. Clemson 21, Boston College 17.

not so sure about Oregon. If USC’s defense shows up at all, their offense is good enough to win it. Think this may be a barn burner (no disrespect to AU fans)

Tony — The most interesting game of the weekend is Miss State-Kentucky; I’m happy for Mullen and Miss State (except when they show up in Tuscaloosa in a few weeks). And this game is in glamorous Starkville. Very interesting. I see you picked the two wiinners (Mizzou and Michigan State) to become the next losers. Interesting. Remember, both are motivated and have the big MO with them–but both are also on the road. We’ll see.

By the way, Joe Pesci wanted to know what a ute is.

Bonus pick- NC State over FSU courtesy of a late FSU fumble.

South Carolina has averaged around a 17 point spread in their wins this year. To Spurrier, this is pitiful but acceptable considering his QB has a Jekyll and Hyde personality. He dreams of a 40 point spread and will attempt one in Columbia Saturday, even at the expense of running his big horse lame. His year long nightmare of Tennessee in Black thumping his Gamehens in 2009 on Halloween night still haunts him. Although the guy that rode the Tennessee sidelines last year is long gone, Coach Steve’s revenge burns strong. There is no team Spurrier would rather whack and whack hard than the team that represents the state of his birth that shunned him way back when and ignores his self proclaimed greatness now. By all accounts, Darth should get his W but like TB, I don’t pick against my boys often. UT 27 Darth 21…

Winners : UGA, Auburn, Nebraska, Sparty, Oregon,

Hey Tony, we all saw what happens when an SEC team finally leaves the South.

Do you think Colorada would win the SEC Least?

Do I have to use my cancelled SEC championship ticket for the All-U-Can-Eat Fried Catfish Contest that replaced it? Or can I use it to get into the Gun & Knife show the following weekend in the Georgia Dome?

I think Georgia and Florida are pretty evenly matched. I have a feeling Auburn is not going to be at its best while Ole Miss has nothing to lose.

I’ve been known to wrong on my picks many times though.

here’s my assumptions:

either MSU, or Mizzou will run the table…….probably MSU. I don’t see the polls jumping Bama over an undefeated Big 10, or PAC 10 team,,,,

I think Oregon will make it, so Bama gets left out even if they run the table.

Tony, you are such a BSBCS homer. You are just making idiotic picks hoping they will help the sec in this stupid system.

We need a 16 team playoff. We need it now. So that idiots like Tony have nothing to do with it.

I can’t remember the last time I was less excited about a Florida-Georgia game. Even thought the Gators are still in the running for the SEC East Division title, that just doesn’t seem to matter much. Thankfully, I am not the Gators head coach, and the guy who is knows that the future of a great program is made or lost in games like this one. The Gators should win this game on talent alone, but having suffered one blowout and two disappointingly close losses, it’s time for Urban Meyer to pull a “Gene Ellenson” and motivate these young Gators to rise from their pissing, moaning and feeling sorry for themselves and play for the future.

I do feel better for one reason, however. Every time Tony picks UGA or Tech in a competitive game, it turns out to be a forlorn hope. Go, Tony!

Paul in RDU

I agree with all of Tony’s picks apart from Utah-AF – Utah wins.
He still has teams (Iowa, Neb, Clemson) winning “because they have to” – I think these teams will win because they are stronger on the lines than their opponents.

I think most Auburn fans like myself are nervous about the Ole Miss Black Bears simply because having that target on your back is something new to us in the age of the BCS. But, I think our offense (Newton-Dyer-Adams-McCaleb-Taylor) does wear out the Miss D and we get the win……35-21

This Ga/Fla game is anybody’s…..Gators will look better than they have( It’s Gerogia and bye week) and Dawgs will play as good as they have last two weeks, so, It’ll be a good one, but only these two schools will care this year, but South Carolina will keep an eye on it. I would assume chickens are pulling for us, since in a tie breaker, they are on top of us due to beating us….what the hey, Dawgs 31-17

Dawg_Mike—-Let’s not exaggerate or rehash old material. Chris Rainey was not convicted of a “felony.” He pled to a misdemeanor and accepted supervised probation. There was no violence involved, he had no prior history, and he was suspended for half of the season. He’s a good kid who screwed up, but he’s done his time, paid his price, and hopefully learned something about life and how to handle himself from his mistake. Given the circumstances, thirty years ago, this would never have wound up in court.

1. I can’t pick the Dawgs to win. I just hope they do.

2. Auburn, big.

3. Vols in an upset. They were going to knock off somebody they weren’t supposed to and USC looks to be that team.

4. Missy St.

5. Miami

6. Iowa

7. Mizzou

8. Utah

9. USC, Oregon has played an easier schedule than Boise St so far! Me thinks they are a mirage.

10. Clemson I guess
