Georgia can beat Gators, lose to Auburn, and still win SEC East

I  put this list together yesterday as sort of a sanity check of what could happen in the whacky SEC East as we move into the stretch drive. It doesn’t include every scenario, such as Kentucky winning its last three conference games with Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, and Tennessee to finish 4-4. If that happens, I will gladly stand corrected.

Here are SOME possibilities, not all, of what could happen to determine a champion in the SEC East race.  The most fascinating one is that if Georgia beats Florida, the Bulldogs could still lose to Auburn and go to the SEC championship game in Atlanta. In that respect, the game in Jacksonville is huge to both teams.

Have fun.

First, the teams:

SOUTH CAROLINA (3-2 SEC)

Wins: Georgia, Alabama, Vanderbilt

Losses: Auburn, Kentucky

Games left: vs. Tennessee (Saturday), vs. Arkansas (Nov. 6), at Florida (Nov. 13)

FLORIDA (2-3)

Wins: Tennessee, Kentucky

Losses: Alabama, LSU, Miss. State

Games left: Georgia (Jacksonville, Saturday), at Vanderbilt (Nov. 6), vs. South Carolina Nov. 13.

GEORGIA (3-3)

Wins: Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Kentucky

Losses: South Carolina, Arkansas, Miss. State

Games left: Florida (Jacksonville, Saturday), at Auburn (Nov. 13).

THE SCENARIOS

1. South Carolina controls its own destiny. If the Gamecocks beat Tennessee, Arkansas, and Florida they win the SEC East at 6-2.

2. Florida controls its own destiny. If the Gators beat Georgia, Vanderbilt and South Carolina they will be 5-3 in the conference. Florida would win the tiebreaker with South Carolina if both are 5-3 and Georgia would be 4-4 at best.

3. Georgia doesn’t control its destiny because it lost to South Carolina on Sept. 11. But if it beats Florida and Auburn, and South Carolina loses two of its last three conference games, Georgia will win the Division. Georgia will be 5-3 while South Carolina and Florida will be 4-4 at best.

4. If Georgia beats Florida and South Carolina loses two of its last three conference games, Georgia will win the division whether or not it beats Auburn on Nov. 13. Here’s how:

If Georgia beats Florida but loses to Auburn, Georgia will be 4-4 in the SEC but 4-1 in the Eastern Division (loss to South Carolina).

If Florida loses to Georgia but beats Vanderbilt and South Carolina, it will be 4-4 in the conference but also 4-1 in the Division (Loss to Georgia).

If South Carolina drops two of its last three conference games and one of those losses is to Florida it will be 4-4 in the conference but no better than 3-2 in the division (Losses to Kentucky and Florida).

South Carolina is thus eliminated from the three-way tie at 4-4. Georgia wins the division on the head to head win over Florida.

That should keep us all busy for a while.

Georgia rents their logo from the Green Bay Packers. Point is, every school has something quirky about them.

Who cares? The fact that any of these scenarios could happen is a testament to how far the SEC East has fallen in just the last couple of years. A 4-4 division champ is embarrassing. There are at least 3 (probably 4) teams in the West who will finish with better conference records.

With Auburn’s running game it will be tough to get them off the field unless they self destruct, aka UK. And it’s not all Newton, although his presence makes everyone else look better. They have three good backs. Fannin seems to have Ealey type traits fumbling.

Auburn’s defense made a marked improvement against LSU, we’ll have to see if it’s sustainable. If Georgia somehow comes out of Jacksonville with a win, I suspect there will be some Auburn fans sweating a bit.

Georgia will definitely have to have some of Larry’s “Ole Lady Luck” to upset Auburn.

I guess, but LSU is the 110th ranked passing offense at 139ypg. Aubie held them to 128, so I guess that’s something; Aubie has been a respectable 28th vs. the run and held LSU to 115 on the ground. LSU’s inability to pass- like, at ALL – is what makes me think Bama might roll ‘em a bit next week. Nothing too outlandish because LSU does play D, but I think Bama can get well into the 20s. I honestly think LSU will struggle to get into double digits in that game.

Ok…Lets be realistic about this Georgia football team. I bleed red and black so I am a bit biased. Georgia is playing alot better because it’s Defense. Grantham has them playing very well, especially against the run. Our Offense should be good and AJ has helped us since his return. The thing that SEC fans have to realize is that Georgia vs. Florida, Georgia vs. Auburn, Georgia vs. Georgia Tech are huge rival games. These games are won and lost on emotion, heart, and sure will. I understand that talent still plays huge factor but I really like Georgia’s chances going down the stretch simply because in these types of rival games anyone can beat anyone but this Georgia team has ALOT to prove after a dreadful start!! Also a loss to Florida and this team is right back where they were before Tennessee, and thats under the dawg house!!

This may be the easiest UGA SEC win in years. Florida’s program is way down and it looks like half the team has already quit. They have no playmakers on offense and their D is average. UGA should really run it up good to teach meyer a lesson. Dawgs roll in jax—bet the house: Dawgs 38 uf 13

The bottom line is this. Alabama will NOT lose another game. To Saban, this is not an option. You have to remember that over half of Alabama’s players have only lost 1 game in their careers Cam Newton IS Auburn. Without him, they are just an SEC team like the rest of them. Saban will be the only coach with a plan for Newton. Guaranteed. Just look at Florida without Tebow. Georgia blew any chance they had when they lost to SCAR. Florida blew any chance they had when they lost to Mississippi State. SCAR will win at least 2 of the 3 SEC games that they have left and remember, they are the team that did the “impossible” by beating Alabama. I am predicting SCAR will win the East and Alabama will beat Auburn to win the West. It’s the only way Saban and Spurrier would have it guys…….a rematch is meant to be.

Bama dude, I hope you win out, watch out for the other Dawg, I’m in a tough spot with AU. Would like to see them win out and get an opportunity to play for the MNC, my better half is an AU Alum. Can’t pull against the Dawgs though, it’ll be a tough day for me regardless. I could stomach losing to Auburn if we play a strong game. That would be an epic Iron Bowl, an undefeated Auburn vs a one loss Tide team. I could live with seeing either team win the NC.

Sorry Chris, but SCAR will not lose at home to a 0-4 team in the conference. It’s just not going to happen. Arkansas will be the team with something to prove. Florida beating Georgia this weekend will give SCAR something to think about, but it is unlikely. To BAMA Dude…Rolltide are by far the most committed team I have ever seen regardless of age. You watch…they will not lose another game. A team like BAMA that loses just ticks them off and makes them harder to beat than they were before. I wouldn’t be suprised if they went another 30-0 because of it. By the way Chris overrated or not when you complete 72% of your passes, it doesn’t really matter does it?

Be sure to watch tonight as the giant killers in blue demolish yet another of the very best teams in college football. If the SEC was any good, then Boise State would be in the SEC. BSU is so dominant that they are the only team in the nation with a 96% chance of going undefeated.”

So a team from Idaho could be in the South Eastern Conference? Louisiana Tech is one of the “very best teams in college football?” Who are these “giants” this team in blue has killed?

They are the only team in the nation that won their first game and then was predicted to have an undefeated season.
