Georgia can beat Gators, lose to Auburn, and still win SEC East

I  put this list together yesterday as sort of a sanity check of what could happen in the whacky SEC East as we move into the stretch drive. It doesn’t include every scenario, such as Kentucky winning its last three conference games with Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, and Tennessee to finish 4-4. If that happens, I will gladly stand corrected.

Here are SOME possibilities, not all, of what could happen to determine a champion in the SEC East race.  The most fascinating one is that if Georgia beats Florida, the Bulldogs could still lose to Auburn and go to the SEC championship game in Atlanta. In that respect, the game in Jacksonville is huge to both teams.

Have fun.

First, the teams:

SOUTH CAROLINA (3-2 SEC)

Wins: Georgia, Alabama, Vanderbilt

Losses: Auburn, Kentucky

Games left: vs. Tennessee (Saturday), vs. Arkansas (Nov. 6), at Florida (Nov. 13)

FLORIDA (2-3)

Wins: Tennessee, Kentucky

Losses: Alabama, LSU, Miss. State

Games left: Georgia (Jacksonville, Saturday), at Vanderbilt (Nov. 6), vs. South Carolina Nov. 13.

GEORGIA (3-3)

Wins: Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Kentucky

Losses: South Carolina, Arkansas, Miss. State

Games left: Florida (Jacksonville, Saturday), at Auburn (Nov. 13).

THE SCENARIOS

1. South Carolina controls its own destiny. If the Gamecocks beat Tennessee, Arkansas, and Florida they win the SEC East at 6-2.

2. Florida controls its own destiny. If the Gators beat Georgia, Vanderbilt and South Carolina they will be 5-3 in the conference. Florida would win the tiebreaker with South Carolina if both are 5-3 and Georgia would be 4-4 at best.

3. Georgia doesn’t control its destiny because it lost to South Carolina on Sept. 11. But if it beats Florida and Auburn, and South Carolina loses two of its last three conference games, Georgia will win the Division. Georgia will be 5-3 while South Carolina and Florida will be 4-4 at best.

4. If Georgia beats Florida and South Carolina loses two of its last three conference games, Georgia will win the division whether or not it beats Auburn on Nov. 13. Here’s how:

If Georgia beats Florida but loses to Auburn, Georgia will be 4-4 in the SEC but 4-1 in the Eastern Division (loss to South Carolina).

If Florida loses to Georgia but beats Vanderbilt and South Carolina, it will be 4-4 in the conference but also 4-1 in the Division (Loss to Georgia).

If South Carolina drops two of its last three conference games and one of those losses is to Florida it will be 4-4 in the conference but no better than 3-2 in the division (Losses to Kentucky and Florida).

South Carolina is thus eliminated from the three-way tie at 4-4. Georgia wins the division on the head to head win over Florida.

That should keep us all busy for a while.

Hey Zero Chance, who is your team? Are you really going to argue that you don’t say Tech will be great “next year?” I’m assuming you are a nerd fan because your talking points are identical to theirs.

I think you’re the only Bama fan I’ve seen here so far. Now, I don’t know a whole lot about Bama football history so could you explain what Crimson Tide and the Elephant are? I mean, is the Elephant a mascot and the Roll Tide Roll just a battle cry?

Bama dude, it is my understanding that the SEC Office sets up the conference schedules and the individual schools setup their out of conference games.

Could be. I’m certainly not 100% on it. If so then Bama’s schedule this year is even more puzzling. It would almost appear that the SEC was trying to make repeating as difficult as possible.

Danny Sheridan, if Vegas would favor Bama by 5.5 then on a neutral field Bama would be favored by about 2.5.

I was surprised that Auburn was favored by only 7 over Ole Miss yesterday. I haven’t seen the line today but I figured it would be at least by 14.

if we beat the 2 #1’s in a row, idiots, we would be SEC champs then that puts us in the Sugar Bowl! And yes I have a Doctorate degree. Some (most) of ya’ll are embarrassing with how little NCAA football knowledge you actually have. For goodness sakes actually learn something and watch a few games before coming on here and showing just how D-UMB yoy are! And don’t forget we would get to swat the reigning ACC champs in between the 2 #1’s

The Crimson Tide
Early newspaper accounts of the University’s football squad simply referred to them as the “varsity” or the “Crimson White.” The first nickname popular with the media was the “Thin Red Line,” which was used until 1906. Hugh Roberts, former sports editor of the Birmingham Age-Herald, is credited with coining the phrase “Crimson Tide” in an article describing the 1907 Iron Bowl played in Birmingham. The game was played in a sea of red mud with Auburn a heavy favorite to win. Alabama held Auburn to a 6-6 tie, thus graduating to their newfound nickname.

[edit] The Elephant
The elephant’s association with Alabama dates back to the 1930 football season when the Crimson Tide was led by Coach Wallace Wade. There are two stories about how Alabama became associated with the elephant.

Officially, following the 1930 game versus Ole Miss, Atlanta Journal sports writer Everett Strupper wrote:

“At the end of the quarter, the earth started to tremble, there was a distant rumble that continued to grow. Some excited fan in the stands bellowed, ‘Hold your horses, the elephants are coming,’ and out stamped this Alabama varsity. It was the first time that I had seen it and the size of the entire eleven nearly knocked me cold, men that I had seen play last year looking like they had nearly doubled in size.”

Sports writers continued to refer to Alabama as the “Red Elephants” afterwards, referring to their crimson jerseys. The 1930 team shut out eight of ten opponents, allowing a total of only 13 points all season. The “Red Elephants” rolled up 217 points that season, including a 24-0 victory over Washington State in the Rose Bowl.

Another account attributes the Rosenberger’s Birmingham Trunk Company for the elephant association. Alabama used the Birmingham Trunk Company’s luggage to travel to the 1930 Rose Bowl. The luggage company’s trademark was a red elephant standing on a trunk. When the football team arrived in Pasadena, the reporters greeting them associated their large size with the elephants on their luggage.

Despite these early associations of the elephant to the University of Alabama, the university did not officially accept the elephant as university mascot until 1979. [1]

Alabama’s elephant mascot is known as “Big Al

I can’t believe we’re talking about possibly winning a Division after losing to USC (east), Arkansas, and Miss St., but here we are. I’m guessing that Mr.McGarity and CMR had a little “sit-down” to discuss the future of the program and who would participate in that future. Even though UGA didn’t get blown out in any of our losses, we looked lackadaisical at best. I fault coaching, or lack thereof, for that. While I’m optimistic about the rest of the season, let’s remember that we’ve only beaten the state of TN in the SEC, not the likes of UF, AU, & Bama. The good news is that the wins were blowouts and we seem to be clicking……. Momentum is huge in CFB, hopefully it’ll continue. If we beat UF pretty good, I’m sure the War Eagles, Tigers, Bears, whatever they are, will sweat a little more about the upcoming contest. I’m sure they hate the targets on their backs as much as any team, and are a little focused on the Iron Bowl.

Serious Dawg fans need to start organizing and demanding that Richt be fired. Otherwise, sports writers will be asking the same questions this time a year from now.

Richt represents mediocrity. Saban and Meyer represent excellence and championships. Richt simply isn’t in their class, nor will he ever be. Richt would have to be incredibly lucky to win the division, and the odds against him winning the SEC championship would be at least 50:1.

Those are the simple facts, and there’s no amount of enthusiasm or cheerleading or Top 5 recruiting classes that can get around it.

As they say in poker, “Read ‘em and weep.”

Not really. The Big 12 is a joke because it’s been Texas/Oklahoma dominating one division with nobody in the other. This has been going on for awhile now. The SEC East is having a flukish feeling down year while the SEC West is as strong or stronger top to bottom as any in the country. I don’t think this would be much of a black eye, and don’t expect it to happen anyway. When all is said and done I think the UK/USCe game will look like an outlier and USCe will be playing in the Dome after beating Florida.
