Georgia can beat Gators, lose to Auburn, and still win SEC East

I  put this list together yesterday as sort of a sanity check of what could happen in the whacky SEC East as we move into the stretch drive. It doesn’t include every scenario, such as Kentucky winning its last three conference games with Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, and Tennessee to finish 4-4. If that happens, I will gladly stand corrected.

Here are SOME possibilities, not all, of what could happen to determine a champion in the SEC East race.  The most fascinating one is that if Georgia beats Florida, the Bulldogs could still lose to Auburn and go to the SEC championship game in Atlanta. In that respect, the game in Jacksonville is huge to both teams.

Have fun.

First, the teams:

SOUTH CAROLINA (3-2 SEC)

Wins: Georgia, Alabama, Vanderbilt

Losses: Auburn, Kentucky

Games left: vs. Tennessee (Saturday), vs. Arkansas (Nov. 6), at Florida (Nov. 13)

FLORIDA (2-3)

Wins: Tennessee, Kentucky

Losses: Alabama, LSU, Miss. State

Games left: Georgia (Jacksonville, Saturday), at Vanderbilt (Nov. 6), vs. South Carolina Nov. 13.

GEORGIA (3-3)

Wins: Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Kentucky

Losses: South Carolina, Arkansas, Miss. State

Games left: Florida (Jacksonville, Saturday), at Auburn (Nov. 13).

THE SCENARIOS

1. South Carolina controls its own destiny. If the Gamecocks beat Tennessee, Arkansas, and Florida they win the SEC East at 6-2.

2. Florida controls its own destiny. If the Gators beat Georgia, Vanderbilt and South Carolina they will be 5-3 in the conference. Florida would win the tiebreaker with South Carolina if both are 5-3 and Georgia would be 4-4 at best.

3. Georgia doesn’t control its destiny because it lost to South Carolina on Sept. 11. But if it beats Florida and Auburn, and South Carolina loses two of its last three conference games, Georgia will win the Division. Georgia will be 5-3 while South Carolina and Florida will be 4-4 at best.

4. If Georgia beats Florida and South Carolina loses two of its last three conference games, Georgia will win the division whether or not it beats Auburn on Nov. 13. Here’s how:

If Georgia beats Florida but loses to Auburn, Georgia will be 4-4 in the SEC but 4-1 in the Eastern Division (loss to South Carolina).

If Florida loses to Georgia but beats Vanderbilt and South Carolina, it will be 4-4 in the conference but also 4-1 in the Division (Loss to Georgia).

If South Carolina drops two of its last three conference games and one of those losses is to Florida it will be 4-4 in the conference but no better than 3-2 in the division (Losses to Kentucky and Florida).

South Carolina is thus eliminated from the three-way tie at 4-4. Georgia wins the division on the head to head win over Florida.

That should keep us all busy for a while.

I’m not an Auburn fan, but I think the barners will put up at least 40 points against UGA. If the game was in Athens, it might be a little more competitive, but I’m afraid it will be an embarrasing massacre.

Even if we don’t beat AU, I don’t think they can beat Bama…Control Newton, Beat Auburn, And Bama has a good of chance as anyone. They are weak at passing, and Saban will game plan to shut the big guy down. IMO

Georgia is getting little credit for being # 12 nationally against the run. Georgia, full of some pretty good players, are showing signs of being pretty good. We will give Auburn fits. Our OL is playing alot better, we can run the ball, and Murray and AJ will give anybody fits. I say REAL Auburn fans have US on their mind.

@ jasont13…You are mistaken if you think the 06 AU team was very good. We had 4 patsies on the schedule and lost to UGA and Arkansas. The 04 Au team was in another class. Pat your dogs all you want but that 06 AU team was mediocre and not one of the best of the decade.

I hope you are right, but Auburn is really tough at home. I don’t know if UGA has anyone that can stop Newton.

JB: Two National Championship: We demand greatness every year, Florida has Miami, Florida State to compete with signing good players. UGA has no one on that level and every year they are sub par and you people praise them for 4 loses.

Mark Richt woud be fired at any of the big 3 schools in Florida.

If Boise was so good they would play some teams other than the The Idaho Potato Pickers School for Girls. Until you play in a winning division, against ranked teams then you will get no respect.

@ JB….12th in the the country wont stop Auburn’s running game. They just put over 400 yards on LSU and their defense is better in anyone’s opinion. To say you’re going to give AU fits is more hope than reality.

Blue, you dufus. Are you insinuating SEC schools are scared of Boise? It was after Boise got the crap kicked out of them in Athens that they quit scheduling SEC teams in a-one-and-done format. Their stadium is so small, they cannot pay a SEC team enough to travel out there by splitting the gate. Hell, there are high school stadiums in Georgia as big as Boise’s.

UGA plays the current ACC Champ every year, UF has FSU annually, Bama played Penn State, Auburn played Clemson, etc. “Tough OCC – rare exceptions?”

You are a dufus, Blue.

Not an Auburn Fan,

Your handle should be “Not a Football Fan. If you were, you would know that both Auburn and UGA, especially the past 20 years or so, win more games on the other’s field than their own.

No doubt, Auburn is great this year, and their offense is better. But our defense is giving up fewer points against common opponents, so that may even things up some.

We’ll see soon . . .

I said on here last week that a 4-4 East team could make it to Atlanta. No team has ever played in the SECCG with a 4-4 conference record.

Beast, it seems to me that there has been a lack of leadership from the Gator players. When things are not going well the leaders have to step up. What do you think?

the best scenario would be win out and take the SEC east (as USC does its classic late fall collapse/although if latimore is playing don’t think it happens)-play Alabama for SEC title go to the Sugar bowl and dismantle Boise St who for a month straight was crying about how they deserve to play for a BCS championship

Sad Dawg,
I know about the two teams winning at each other’s home field. If UGA thinks they have a great defense because they have won against the likes of Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Kentucky, they will have a rude awakening when Newton breaks into the secondary. I hope I’m wrong and UGA wins but I don’t think they are really that strong on defense. We’ll see.

I’m as big as a UGA fan as there is, but during this 20 year nightmare in Jacksonville I’ve seen too many better UGA teams losing to weaker Florida teams. Until this trend changes and gets back to normal, I am going to continue to expect the worse.

Don’t underestimate how well UGAy’s defense played against Randall Cobb of Kentucky, that kid can play, and almost single-handedly beat Auburn on the same field.

Still not sold on Auburn. Yes, Newton is a beast and can throw it around a little bit, but they haven’t been destroying teams like Bama the past couple of years. A win is a win, but Auburn doesn’t look the slightest bit invincible.
