Georgia can beat Gators, lose to Auburn, and still win SEC East

I  put this list together yesterday as sort of a sanity check of what could happen in the whacky SEC East as we move into the stretch drive. It doesn’t include every scenario, such as Kentucky winning its last three conference games with Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, and Tennessee to finish 4-4. If that happens, I will gladly stand corrected.

Here are SOME possibilities, not all, of what could happen to determine a champion in the SEC East race.  The most fascinating one is that if Georgia beats Florida, the Bulldogs could still lose to Auburn and go to the SEC championship game in Atlanta. In that respect, the game in Jacksonville is huge to both teams.

Have fun.

First, the teams:

SOUTH CAROLINA (3-2 SEC)

Wins: Georgia, Alabama, Vanderbilt

Losses: Auburn, Kentucky

Games left: vs. Tennessee (Saturday), vs. Arkansas (Nov. 6), at Florida (Nov. 13)

FLORIDA (2-3)

Wins: Tennessee, Kentucky

Losses: Alabama, LSU, Miss. State

Games left: Georgia (Jacksonville, Saturday), at Vanderbilt (Nov. 6), vs. South Carolina Nov. 13.

GEORGIA (3-3)

Wins: Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Kentucky

Losses: South Carolina, Arkansas, Miss. State

Games left: Florida (Jacksonville, Saturday), at Auburn (Nov. 13).

THE SCENARIOS

1. South Carolina controls its own destiny. If the Gamecocks beat Tennessee, Arkansas, and Florida they win the SEC East at 6-2.

2. Florida controls its own destiny. If the Gators beat Georgia, Vanderbilt and South Carolina they will be 5-3 in the conference. Florida would win the tiebreaker with South Carolina if both are 5-3 and Georgia would be 4-4 at best.

3. Georgia doesn’t control its destiny because it lost to South Carolina on Sept. 11. But if it beats Florida and Auburn, and South Carolina loses two of its last three conference games, Georgia will win the Division. Georgia will be 5-3 while South Carolina and Florida will be 4-4 at best.

4. If Georgia beats Florida and South Carolina loses two of its last three conference games, Georgia will win the division whether or not it beats Auburn on Nov. 13. Here’s how:

If Georgia beats Florida but loses to Auburn, Georgia will be 4-4 in the SEC but 4-1 in the Eastern Division (loss to South Carolina).

If Florida loses to Georgia but beats Vanderbilt and South Carolina, it will be 4-4 in the conference but also 4-1 in the Division (Loss to Georgia).

If South Carolina drops two of its last three conference games and one of those losses is to Florida it will be 4-4 in the conference but no better than 3-2 in the division (Losses to Kentucky and Florida).

South Carolina is thus eliminated from the three-way tie at 4-4. Georgia wins the division on the head to head win over Florida.

That should keep us all busy for a while.

Excuses? It’s Florida, that’s an excuse enough. UGA over the past 20 years has invented new and creative ways to blow games to this group of trash.

I’m as diehard a UGA fan as they come, but until UGA begins to consistently beat UF like they should, I will continue to go into this game expecting the worst. When we get a QB that leaves UGA with a winning record against the backwoods swamp rats then I will believe the curse has been lifted. Murray is as good as any to right the ship in this series.

I really wonder what’s up with these nasty comments about Georgia from Alabama and Florida fans. You’ve both had some great teams and look to continue. It’s not the teams or all the fans it’s the individuals who take the time to post this crap on another teams blog. Hard to understand but I have the feeling that your taking your teams success too seriouly and personally. Lots of Alabama fans now. Where have you been before Saban.
Just a prediction, Alabama will beat Auburn and win the SEC. Although, I’d like to see Georgia win out, I think they’ll beat Tech and have no idea if they can beat Auburn or Florida – odds against it. It’s over the top having to play Florida in Jacksonville every year, a short bus ride for them, and them having a bye week. That has happened far too much over the years. A practice that I bet McGarity will put a stop to before too long.

georgedawg,
I haven’t read all of the posts but I’m sure there are just as many nasty comments about UF if not more from UGA fans. As far as the “short bus ride”, it’s about 1 1/2 hours. The same as the flight from Athens. One team has to board a bus and the other board a plane. Why no complaints when UGA was dominating in the 70’s and 80’s?

I simply post facts, and they rub people the wrong way..and I call mike convickt’s supporters ghetto trash, and the super dome a homeless shelter..WHICH THEY ARE(”dey was juz dogs, dey was his dogs!”), and IT WAS (during katrina).

Unlike BAMA fans(and UGA fans up thru about week 2 every year), I haven’t predicted we will win the next 5 NC in a row ..I simply said after seeing what Au did to ARK and LSU, nobody can stop cam or outscore us..we will have to turn the ball over a lot to lose..and we might.

The main rub on people is I just don”t kiss a** unless there is a paycheck involved, everyone else gets my real feelings face to face. Everyone should be that way.

Today people were talking about how D Dooley should appologize or avoid making FACTUAL comparisons, because people are stupid and don’t know history, and will take it the wrong way. Truth is, he should keep on talking that way and anyone too stupid to understand the analogy should kill themselves and NOT procreate.

I tend to think the Gators will beat GA , something like 21-20 but I prefer the dogs to win, because IF we do win out, or if LSU beats bama(in which case we could lose to bama and still be in the SEC championship game) i’d rather face the dogs than gators because the gators do have better coaching and more speed, even if it might be harder to beat the same team twice in 3 weeks.

Let’s take things one game at a time, shall we? UGA needs to focus on the Gators this week, and nothing else. Lose this game and the season is in the Tidy Bowl.

I always say things are never as good as they seem or as bad as they seem. Upside: UGA could win out and in the process make a major statement both this season and in the preseason polls for next year. Downside: not bowl eligible, sparking major fireworks in the offseason. Most likely: well, I’d say 7-5 with a bus-ride bowl bid.

I don’t care how many NC’s that UF has won to date, we are talking about the 2010 season and not seasons past. Congrats to the Gators on past success, but those NC’s aren’t going to matter this year. The Dawgs have the better team this year, and if they execute worthy of their talent, then they will win on Sat. Murray is the better QB, hands down. One thing is for certain, if the Dawgs lose then it would only be that they beat themselves. GO DAWGS!

Say what you will about UGA this year, but from an outsider’s perspective, they have improved tremendously since the 4 losses. I don’t think that their dominant wins over the last few games are flukes or b/c it was against cellar teams. I see them beating the Gators, although the game may be close. Aaron Murray is impressive and that Ealey kid can play. Coupled with AJ Green, this team continues to get better and will give any team fits. I can also see them beating Auburn as well, although I hope my team gets the honor of beating them as the #1 ranked team. I will be rooting for UGA this weekend. RTR!

Willb,

Yes, sir.

Georgia would have done far worse had we played the # 1 team in The SEC Alabama and the # 1 Defensive team in The SEC LSU, neither of which do we play. They also did a FAR BETTER job than us vs Missy State who beat us in a rout.

In the meantime, we also beat Kentucky by not nearly as well as the rout Florida had over them.

And, we LOST to the likes of Colorado a losing team with a losing record even with their win over us, a loss which Florida has nothing to compare.

All in all, Florida is a LOT BETTER FOOTBALL TEAM than we are.

4-3
4-4

Since when is this season compared as these feel-good fans are doing on this blog except for you Willb, and it determined that we are BETTER than Florida ?

B.S. of the highest order, as you point out correctly, Willb. I noticed none of them replied to you Willb on your point, so I will.

Hey Tator Train! You know, I seem to recall Georgia Playing Bosie State about 5 years ago and we beat the stuffings out of them in Athens!
Here read this!
Well folks, that is what happens when teams with smaller, slower, and generally well coached players run into faster, bigger, and much better coached teams. Georgia completely dismantled Boise State 48-13 in Athens.

Most of the offseason, many in the media and blog community labeled Boise’s offense as “too high powered” for UGA. How would the Bulldogs manage to hang with the 45+ points per game high flying attack of the Mustangs?

The answer? By playing conservative on defense, stopping the run and not falling for the play action. All the while, exposing the complete lunacy of the Bronco defense to the world.

[Photo: Imagine how bad it would have been if Hawkins wasn't a master motivator? The well read guru should consider the book above before taking on another elite BCS team.]

The Broncos managed just 13 points and 292 yards of total offense. It should be noted that 135 of those yards and all 13 of those points came after UGA was already up 38-0 and had begun to substitute liberally on defense.

YOu know what, we will do it again if Boise Plays us! SEC is by far the toughest conference. You might be able to beat a few teams but you would never even come close to being undefeated or even being ranked number 1 until you learn how to play defense in our conference.
