Georgia can beat Gators, lose to Auburn, and still win SEC East

I  put this list together yesterday as sort of a sanity check of what could happen in the whacky SEC East as we move into the stretch drive. It doesn’t include every scenario, such as Kentucky winning its last three conference games with Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, and Tennessee to finish 4-4. If that happens, I will gladly stand corrected.

Here are SOME possibilities, not all, of what could happen to determine a champion in the SEC East race.  The most fascinating one is that if Georgia beats Florida, the Bulldogs could still lose to Auburn and go to the SEC championship game in Atlanta. In that respect, the game in Jacksonville is huge to both teams.

Have fun.

First, the teams:

SOUTH CAROLINA (3-2 SEC)

Wins: Georgia, Alabama, Vanderbilt

Losses: Auburn, Kentucky

Games left: vs. Tennessee (Saturday), vs. Arkansas (Nov. 6), at Florida (Nov. 13)

FLORIDA (2-3)

Wins: Tennessee, Kentucky

Losses: Alabama, LSU, Miss. State

Games left: Georgia (Jacksonville, Saturday), at Vanderbilt (Nov. 6), vs. South Carolina Nov. 13.

GEORGIA (3-3)

Wins: Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Kentucky

Losses: South Carolina, Arkansas, Miss. State

Games left: Florida (Jacksonville, Saturday), at Auburn (Nov. 13).

THE SCENARIOS

1. South Carolina controls its own destiny. If the Gamecocks beat Tennessee, Arkansas, and Florida they win the SEC East at 6-2.

2. Florida controls its own destiny. If the Gators beat Georgia, Vanderbilt and South Carolina they will be 5-3 in the conference. Florida would win the tiebreaker with South Carolina if both are 5-3 and Georgia would be 4-4 at best.

3. Georgia doesn’t control its destiny because it lost to South Carolina on Sept. 11. But if it beats Florida and Auburn, and South Carolina loses two of its last three conference games, Georgia will win the Division. Georgia will be 5-3 while South Carolina and Florida will be 4-4 at best.

4. If Georgia beats Florida and South Carolina loses two of its last three conference games, Georgia will win the division whether or not it beats Auburn on Nov. 13. Here’s how:

If Georgia beats Florida but loses to Auburn, Georgia will be 4-4 in the SEC but 4-1 in the Eastern Division (loss to South Carolina).

If Florida loses to Georgia but beats Vanderbilt and South Carolina, it will be 4-4 in the conference but also 4-1 in the Division (Loss to Georgia).

If South Carolina drops two of its last three conference games and one of those losses is to Florida it will be 4-4 in the conference but no better than 3-2 in the division (Losses to Kentucky and Florida).

South Carolina is thus eliminated from the three-way tie at 4-4. Georgia wins the division on the head to head win over Florida.

That should keep us all busy for a while.

I don’t know who “we” are. Both of my sons (and one daughter-in-law) are AU grads. I can assure you that they weren’t pulling for Bama to win anything.

But……I like your heart.

@ Bama Dude… hate to admit it but I agree with a lot you say. specially at Spurrier boy. I have to say though If AU can arrive undefeated at the Iron Bowl it will certainly be the biggest and best one since 89 and depending on how it plays out, possibly ever.

“UGA been around a whole lot longer than Greenbay.”

Still has nothing to do with the fact that they rent their logo from Green Bay.

From Wiki

he oval “G” logo was created in 1961 by Packers equipment manager George “Dad” Braisher. To most people’s minds, the “G” stands for “Green Bay”. However, when the logo was designed and adopted, it was determined the “G” would stand for “Greatness”. The team actually used a number of different logos prior to 1961, but the “G” is the only logo that has ever appeared on the helmet.[34] Although the Packers have granted limited permission to other organizations to utilize a similar logo, notably the University of Georgia and Grambling State University, the Packers hold the trademark for it.

Auburn Redhead is right. Always SEC even if I have to hold my nose while pulling for Bama. True fans and people who actually attended SEC schools get that. Bubbas that are hangers on don’t.

“Auburn fans are sadly misguided. They forget that they barely beat Clemson and SCAR. SCAR is fumble and a misplaced timeout away from being undefeated just like they are. ”

Last I checked, Auburn was 8-0 and everyone else had a loss or more.

Those logo comments were directed towards people who make fun of other schools. Someone was making fun of SC for having a chicken as their mascot which prompted me to point out that UGA rents their logo from the Packers.

The point is, you guys are not undefeated because you are an unstoppabe force. You are undefeated because there is some serious luck involved, but that’s the game of football. Auburn’s luck will run out against BAMA. Auburn is an excellent football team, but without the Cam Newton juggernaut, you are just another SEC team. BAMA’s defense will make Auburn look like just another SEC team. You Tiger fans sould lock up the Heisman though. Newton is seriously worthy.

I was waiting for that comment to appear at some point. Whenever Auburn has a good year, it’s always luck. Whenever Bama/LSU/Florida has a good year it’s because they are unstoppable.

I’m a SCAR fan and I am in the same boat. It is always luck. The powers that be tell us that is has to be that way because we aren’t the top this and the top that. It’s just like someone earlier saying that Garcia was overrated eventhough his stats are off the chart. Heck…we beat BAMA of all teams and then lose to UK which was supposed to be impossible. Alot of football is good and bad luck.

let me be the first (apparently)…….

AU is a very good foorball team. Cam Newton may be the best football player I’ve seen on the Plains since Bo Jackson. And…..he is not a one-trick pony. He has some very good skill players (see….D. Adams) at his disposal. AU’s defense is anchored by Nick Fairley (the best SEC DL I’ve seen this year), and Josh Bynes (my favorite SEC player).

AU is for real. Bama will have to play their best sixty minutes to stay on the field with this team.

I like our chances.

I made my point pretty clearly. When Auburn went undefeated in 04 people said they sucked because they played Citadel. Florida played the Citadel in 08 and no one said a word about it. Now that Auburn is 8-0, people are calling Auburn lucky and that Auburn is a one man team even though it takes more than one person to win a football game. I do see your point about Cam, which is a huge factor because he carries the offense……….like EVERY qb is supposed to do.

Colts: Take out Manning and they instantly suck.

Pats: Take out Brady and they suck.

The QB is supposed to be the leader of the team. Auburn has it’s leader and they are all having fun. This year was supposed to be an ok year for Auburn. Cam has helped Auburn become a great team and the chemistry is better than any school in the nation, say maybe Oregon.

Yeah, and I think Chizek has done a great job so far. I was very skeptical, like EVERY Auburn fan/grad, about it but I didn’t get out there and protest when he arrived. Chizek came in a really bad situation and people were really mean towards him. Hell, the president of Auburn didn’t even bother showing up at the airport to greet him. Chizek will build his resume and probably move on in the next couple of years. I don’t see him as a long term coach and who can blame him? Auburn has a history of weirdness with coaches.

3rd,

Hopefully, the Saban hire and subsequent success will put an end to the “BAMA ties” theory of hiring. Not that there aren’t good coaches with BAMA ties out there. The problem becomes availability at the very moment BAMA has the vacancy. Several times, when a good BAMA guy wasn’t available, we have chosen a bad BAMA guy instead of a great non-BAMA guy.

You are making my point for me. Watch ESPN on Saturday. They give ZERO credit to the rest of the Auburn team. To them..Cam is Auburn. Same thing with us…..according to them Lattimore is the only reason we are in contention for the east. Nevermind we have the number 5 QB in the nation.

Alright, yeah I do see your point now but that is ESPN. They always do stuff like that. I don’t think anyone on the Auburn team really gives a crap about what ESPN thinks of them. Honestly I have nothing against SC. Never have probably never will.

Funny story though, I was at an opening of Chic Fil A and had my Auburn hat on. Some random guy came walking up to me and said that SC would beat us by 17 points and then said that we suck. After he said that, I just kind of stood there with my chicken sandwich and said, “well, you may well beat us but right now I am enjoying eating your mascot.” He just looked at me and rolled his eyes.

All I want is for Auburn to do things straight and right. Ever since Pat Dye and co. got us put on probation I’ve been cautiously optimistic. I do miss Tuberville but he could be so predictable. Chizek seems to have his squad fired up and doesn’t seem to look past each game like Tuberville did. I do remember the Pat Dye days where all I can remember was the announcer saying “Pat Dye is going for the tie, again……”

We get called War Chickens all the time by the Bammers. It is what it is. If you can laugh at them and yourself you know you’re doing alright.

Another funny story about Pat Dye: I was watching Sports South a few years ago and there was a retired SEC ref talking about the old days. Anyway he said he was coaching a game and Pat Dye came up and screamed at him and called him an a-hole. He said that he stood there and took it and then replied “Pat, we go to the same church so if you would, please refer to me as Brother A-hole.”
