Georgia can beat Gators, lose to Auburn, and still win SEC East

I  put this list together yesterday as sort of a sanity check of what could happen in the whacky SEC East as we move into the stretch drive. It doesn’t include every scenario, such as Kentucky winning its last three conference games with Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, and Tennessee to finish 4-4. If that happens, I will gladly stand corrected.

Here are SOME possibilities, not all, of what could happen to determine a champion in the SEC East race.  The most fascinating one is that if Georgia beats Florida, the Bulldogs could still lose to Auburn and go to the SEC championship game in Atlanta. In that respect, the game in Jacksonville is huge to both teams.

Have fun.

First, the teams:

SOUTH CAROLINA (3-2 SEC)

Wins: Georgia, Alabama, Vanderbilt

Losses: Auburn, Kentucky

Games left: vs. Tennessee (Saturday), vs. Arkansas (Nov. 6), at Florida (Nov. 13)

FLORIDA (2-3)

Wins: Tennessee, Kentucky

Losses: Alabama, LSU, Miss. State

Games left: Georgia (Jacksonville, Saturday), at Vanderbilt (Nov. 6), vs. South Carolina Nov. 13.

GEORGIA (3-3)

Wins: Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Kentucky

Losses: South Carolina, Arkansas, Miss. State

Games left: Florida (Jacksonville, Saturday), at Auburn (Nov. 13).

THE SCENARIOS

1. South Carolina controls its own destiny. If the Gamecocks beat Tennessee, Arkansas, and Florida they win the SEC East at 6-2.

2. Florida controls its own destiny. If the Gators beat Georgia, Vanderbilt and South Carolina they will be 5-3 in the conference. Florida would win the tiebreaker with South Carolina if both are 5-3 and Georgia would be 4-4 at best.

3. Georgia doesn’t control its destiny because it lost to South Carolina on Sept. 11. But if it beats Florida and Auburn, and South Carolina loses two of its last three conference games, Georgia will win the Division. Georgia will be 5-3 while South Carolina and Florida will be 4-4 at best.

4. If Georgia beats Florida and South Carolina loses two of its last three conference games, Georgia will win the division whether or not it beats Auburn on Nov. 13. Here’s how:

If Georgia beats Florida but loses to Auburn, Georgia will be 4-4 in the SEC but 4-1 in the Eastern Division (loss to South Carolina).

If Florida loses to Georgia but beats Vanderbilt and South Carolina, it will be 4-4 in the conference but also 4-1 in the Division (Loss to Georgia).

If South Carolina drops two of its last three conference games and one of those losses is to Florida it will be 4-4 in the conference but no better than 3-2 in the division (Losses to Kentucky and Florida).

South Carolina is thus eliminated from the three-way tie at 4-4. Georgia wins the division on the head to head win over Florida.

That should keep us all busy for a while.

I think Boise lines up once and has a pretty good game against top tier talent. The prophets point is made that they couldn’t do it week after week with an SEC type schedule. I don’t take away the fact that they may have a good football team, but it’s relative to who they play.

can’t believe fate has put me in this position. I need for Oregon to tank it vs SoCal.

I really despise Kiffin, and his collection of thug coaches. Even though UT is a bitter rival….they didn’t deserve this outcome…..Mike Hamilton should be nutted at high noon in Neyland Stadium.

So here goes…..Go Trojans!!!…….sort of…..

how2fish – I am really not concerned with what a UGA fan thinks of me. Over the years, I have witnessed your fans act worse than any other human being I have ever encountered. Your rhetoric has no meaning to me. I do not care how i am perceived by u or any other UGA fan. Dawg fans are without a doubt the biggest pricks out there. Ever wonder why i would want to kick someones ass? Look in the mirror.

Nothing there but trash, nothing meaningful, nothing to contribute to an intelligent conversation, hateful, spiteful rhetoric, just nothing. What is your point? Please make it and then just leave. I’m so amused at the “Awlbarn” comments from the likes of JanKemp U and the Tuscalosers, considering my AU Mechanical Engineering degree..and since were having a better year than either of those two , it seems the thing for them to do would be give a tip of the cap and grumble under their breath..maybe they think they have mpre style than AU..Do AU guys get Beiber cuts and pop that collar like its 1985, like UGA and Bama? no, probably not..but thats a good thing…

I didn’t know Tony put you in charge of what was and what was not interesting. I enjoy Spurrier’s comments. If you don’t like it, don’t read it. And since when did Bama and Dawgs become bed partners? It seems you both are scratching the fleas and flies off one another.

My point is that your fans are the worst out there, then when you have it thrown back in your face , you cannot take it. Typical bully mentality, you are real tough until you get humbled. This year, that is what y’all should be, humbled. That is a pipe dream though. Sorry you guys aren’t as good or tough as you think you are. Have a nice day.

So……….it WAS an option in ‘08 to lose to UF and (cough, cough) Utah, Adam?

Your comment sounds kinda like Tony’s a month ago that, UGA would win, because “it needs to.”

UGA will porbably win against the Gators and Idaho St then lose to Auburn and Tech. I think The Dawgs back in to the Sec east title. The Dawgs have to play a rematch aginst Aurburn or Bama in the Dome.

Cam Newtons legs will do more to determine if bama loses another game, than D(rhymes with Nick) Saban’s inner need to be constantly told how great he is, will.

They may win, we may win..Saban’s ego doesn’t much play into it at this point

Doesn’t a copy of a copy of a copy lose a little resolution?

I’ll go on record as saying that I wasn’t too happy with the decision to hire Nick Saban. I’d have preferred someone with ties to the school, and someone that understood what it meant to coach at Alabama. Saban is the polar opposite. He doesn’t care about any of the above.

However…after almost four seasons, I have to admit that the guy is as good as it gets when it comes to CFB coaches. His organizational skills, and his attention to detail are on a level that I’ve never seen. Bryant wasn’t as good…..there…I’ve said it.

Watching Dooley this season illustrates how a person can know all of the things necessary to be a successful coach. His father was one, and he worked for Saban long enough to understand all of the ramifications involved,

He hasn’t made that leap (yet), but I suspect he may be a good one. He just isn’t there at this writing….he’s a copy of a copy of a copy.

Bama dude,

You are correct about LSU’s 4 starters on the DL except Sam Montgomery, a 5 star DE and RS FR who was having a really good season, was lost for the year in the UT game. He was replaced by Chancey Aghayere, 268.

Auburn fans are sadly misguided. They forget that they barely beat Clemson and SCAR. SCAR is fumble and a misplaced timeout away from being undefeated just like they are. The entire conference is up in the air except 1 thing………BAMA will not lose another game and it will be SCAR in the East and BAMA in the West. Just watch it all unfold.

JB I totally agree. Auburn is too one sided and an already thin D is banged up. We had walk-ons playing against LSU. But the one thing the Tigers keep proving is they just find a way to keep scoring or get key stops when they just have to happen. Not the way I would design a team for sure. UGA-AU will be a typical close game down into the fourth and then I see Newton doing what he does best, wear down the D for a late push to get us over the hump. But alas, only conjecture and hope until they’re on the Plains and showing us all what both teams have. We wont know till it’s done. Good luck, I know we’ll need it.

To SadDawg……It is ALWAYS about the coaching. BSU is proof of that. All of the kids know how to play football. It’s how well they are coached that determines the season. It’s coaching that caused SCAR’s 2 loses…..yaning garcia against Auburn……not kicking a field goal against UK. In BAMA’s case…..not running the ball in the 1st half against SCAR. Coaching decisions have caused all of these losses. Same thing with UGA….coaching and strategy changes in the defense etc, etc…

From Wikipedia.com:
The oval “G” logo was created in 1961 by Packers equipment manager Dad Braisher. The team actually used a number of different logos prior to 1961, but the “G” is the only logo that has ever appeared on the helmet.[13] Although other organizations, notably the University of Georgia and Grambling State University, utilize a similar logo, the Packers were the first to employ it and hold the trademark for it. [14] However, the University of Georgia does hold some rights to the logo and was not required to remove the “G” logo as Grambling State University was because Vince Dooley slightly redesigned the “G” logo in 1964. Green Bay’s current, redesigned “G” logo is modeled after the University of Georgia’s redesign of the original “G” logo.[citation needed]

the SEC is only a half step behind NASCAR in pimping every last dollar out of licensing and sponsoship(and thats a good thing..money is always good)..so there is no way a major school would utilie any logo they do not own full rights to, for licensing and merchandising reasons.
