Now it’s Auburn’s turn to wear No. 1 crown

We are headed into the final week of October. So what did we learn over the weekend?

1. Uneasy lies the head that wears the No. 1 crown: On Oct. 9 No. 1 Alabama went on the road and lost to South Carolina after 29 straight regular-season wins. On Oct. 16 Ohio State moved to No. 1 and promptly lost on the road at Wisconsin. Then Oklahoma took over  as the BCS No. 1 and got beat last Saturday night at Missouri. Now Auburn, fresh off an impressive win over previously No. 6 LSU, has moved to No. 1 in the BCS Standings. After a schedule that has included one tough, emotional game after another, Auburn must go to Ole Miss (3-4) on Saturday. Auburn has four games remaining (Ole Miss, Chattanooga, Georgia, Alabama). Win them all and the Tigers get some retribution for 2004, when they went 13-0 and did not play for the national championship. Can they do it now that the whole world is watching?

2. If Cameron Newton is not at the top of your Heisman list, you need to take another look: I wrote for CBS on Saturday that Cameron Newton’s 49-yard touchdown run against LSU “was a Heisman Trophy moment if ever I saw one.” Consider that this guy ran for 217 yards against the No. 6 rushing defense in the country (83.6 ypg), a defense that was set up specifically to stop him. I saw former Auburn head coach Pat Dye before the game and asked him about Newton: “Somebody called and asked me to compare Cameron to all the other great quarterbacks we’ve had at Auburn,” Dye said. “I couldn’t do it. It didn’t make any sense because their ain’t never been anybody like him at Auburn. Never.”

3. Georgia is confident and it should be. But are the Dawgs confident enough to beat Florida? You have to say that Georgia’s march from 1-4 to 4-4 has been most impressive to watch. Beating Tennessee and Vanderbilt at home was what Georgia was supposed to do and they didn’t fool around with those teams. But to be able to go on the road and jump out to a big lead on Kentucky is a good sign. Now Georgia goes down to Jacksonville with a better football team than Florida. Georgia now knows the identity of its football team. Florida, while talented, is still searching for its identity post-Tebow and post 11 players who went to the NFL. But Florida has a decided edge because it still controls its destiny in the SEC East. Georgia has to win this game and get some help to still have a shot to get to Atlanta.

4. Don’t forget about Alabama: Alabama (7-1) is No. 7 in the BCS Standings with four or possibly five games left to play. Down the stretch the Crimson Tide will play three teams ranked in the Top 21 of  the BCS: No. 21 Mississippi State (6-2), No. 12 LSU (7-1), and No. 1 Auburn (8-0). If Alabama wins all of those and the SEC championship to go 12-1, how far will it launch them? I feel confident it will launch them past an undefeated TCU or Boise. But will it launch them past an undefeated Michigan State or Missouri? I’ll dig a little deeper into that on Tuesday.

5. Don’t forget that South Carolina controls its own destiny in the SEC East: If the Gamecocks had not lost at Kentucky on Oct. 16 they would be in pretty good shape right now. Still, if Steve Spurrier’s bunch Tennessee and Arkansas at home and then win at Florida on Nov. 13 they will go to the SEC championship game. It looks like running back Marcus Lattimore will return for Tennessee and that makes a big difference in the way that Steve Spurrier calls his game. Can South Carolina handle the spotlight down the stretch?

Auburn looks good now, and Cam Newton may win the Heisman, but I have an uneasy feeling about the UGA and Alabama games.

Look Cam Newton is great football player. I have not seen a player like him since Bo or Herschel but I have a problem with the Heisman talk. He has a past( stealing laptop). I put the Heisman on a pedestal and good moral players should get hit.

Nothing about Georgia Tech? Tech may win the Duke game but that’s it! Auburn will get beat by Georgia! SC is still SC and won’t win if Lattimore is not in the lineup! Alabama is way too much over-rated and has been exposed! Urban Meyer is a fancy Galen Hall with his coaches gone! No SEC team in National Championship game this year!!

I would just like to say, I told you so, to all the folks that hurled insults at me when I suggested that Auburn was on the rise. They may not stay at #1, but as I said at the beginning of the season UGA and Bama have there work cut out for them.

Auburn should be concerned with the number of hits that Newton is taking. You know that Alabama & Georgia are going to hit him numerous times. QB hits take a toll on them.

Would like to see Auburn go far, but the stars must almost align and then there is the luck factor to go to the BCS Championship Game.

Regardless, a Great Season and a team playing with Great Chemistry !

I’m not sure of Cam Newton’s past at all but think you are being harsh. He is a kid just like the other winners and if he has one transgression then I think society shouldn’t be so quick to judge. Not said as a bleeding heart liberal but as more of an optimist and a father. Events such as success, can change a persons life and CN deserves to be recognized for the success, happiness and money he is generating for Auburn as an unpaid athlete. He messes up again, I am with you, but give the kid a break.

As an Auburn fan, the game which I’m most concerned about is UGA. UGA’s passing offense will challenge/expose Auburn’s secondary. Hopefully, when the time comes for the UGA game, Auburn can outscore the Dawgs. BTW, Dawgs beat the Gators in Jacksonville this week. Much celebration for the Dawg Nation.

If we already knew the future, there’d be no reason to play the games. If you think you KNOW the outcome ahead of time, you’re delusional. UGA may or may not win another game. I feel pretty confident that Auburn will win out, but I don’t know that for sure. I’m hoping like hell they do In the mean time, I’m loving it. It’s great to be an Auburn Tiger. War Eagle!

Normally I would agree with your assumption Phil, look at Shoelaces up at Michigan. But he’s what almost six foot and probably 180? Cam is a tank, 6′6″ and 250. He’s bigger than two thirds of the people who are hitting him!

That said, I’ll be in the South Endzone this Saturday watching the streak hopefully hit 4. These are the types of games Houston Dale seems to pull out of his hat. Unfortunately for us, so were JSU and Vandy. Hotty Toddy!

While I believe Cam Newton may be a good player, I believe he also manages to cover up the inept coaching of the auburn coaches. As long as they continue to score they way they are now, they have a good chance to win their remaining games. However if their offense takes a game off, they could get blown out the stadium by a good team. Time will tell, but he does deserve some recognition for what he has accomplished so far, even if he has stolen a computer. By the way, auburn should lockup Malzahn (very similar to Mullen and Florida, isn’t it?) b/c he is by far the reason they are winning….along with newton. GO DAWGS!

Newton continues to impress, but the number of hits he’s taking is alarming. I haven’t figured out if the plays are all centered on him or if he is improvising and keeping the ball. We have some pretty good running backs; I’d like to see us use them more.

Auburn’s defense is showing improvement, but still has a long way to go.

This Auburn fan is only concerned with the Ole Miss game this week. Way too many teams have been caught looking down the road rather than at their next opponent. Auburn still has a lot of tough games between now and the end of the season.

Auburn is a good team but come on “one tough, emotional game after another”. Tough maybe but what’s so emotional about this teams schedule? I mean so far they have played Arkansas St and Louisiana Monroe and they have benefited from having their 4 toughest games at home. On the road they barely beat Kentucky & Miss St. This team can score but they also give up a lot of points and yards against non cream puffs so they will have to improve to win out and play in the BCS championship game.

Im very happy with the way the Dawgs played in Kentucky. I wasnt impressed with the announers we recieved for the game. They kept harping on the ” GIVE ME” points we recieved from the Cats turnovers.Last time I checked that is the game of football.Win the turnover battle and win the game! Of course turnovers decide the outcome. Our defense looked good, nice pass rush-stout against the run.We must sure up our pass defense,if we dont that will be our downfall.Offenseive line played well and I thought Ealey ran very hard. On to Jax we go! Trick or Treat Let The Big Dawg Eat!!!!

Murphy, LSU’s offensive line is average and played their worst game of the season. However credit should be given to Auburn’s defensive line. Fairly completely overmatched T-Bob. T-Bob is undersized at 280/

Also, I can’t think of but one SEC team that Jefferson or Lee would start for. The lack of a SEC caliber QB has really hurt the Bayou Bengals.

@ AlabamJack….you better worry about beating LSU and forget what everyone else needs to do. In case you haven’t noticed your team has leveled off and will have a tough time running on LSU and will have to throw on the best corner in college. Good luck, if you think you can run all over them like Auburn did remember one thing, you don’t have Cam Newton.

I’m not too sure about Auburn at number 1. They don’t have a great defense and that may cost them against UGA or Alabama. Cam Newton is a freak, no doubt. they have been finding a way to win so far but will lose to either GA or UA. South Carolina will fade at the end of the seasons like they usually do and lose 2 more games. I predict that Georgia will go to the SEC Champ games to play Alabama. Bama will win and play for the national championship game.

What’ll hurt Alabama, if it gets that far, is that it won’t get style points for playing against a (very) multi-loss team in the SEC championship game. Beating a 3 or 4 loss team isn’t going to help.

Wow, I never thought UGA fans could be this delusional. Did you know the combined record of the teams (4) that UGA has beaten this year is 10-18? UGA has beaten Tennessee, Vandy, and Kentucky and now they are projected to be SEC Champs? Give me a break. How far has UGA fallen so that a winning streak against the 3 a 2-4 UT team, a 2-4 Vandy team, and Kentucky means they are “hot”. Give me a break. But, the good news is that all of this will soon be over as Florida will beat the Dawgs as usual….wonder what gimmick Richt will use on Saturday.

Shug,

You are exactly right. That’s why we need (not necessarily want) Aub to make it to Tuscaloosa undefeated. Everyone in the country will be watching the Iron Bowl because it’s the only real game on that entire day. We need that national exposure to make up for the lackluster SEC championship game opponent.

Love my Dawgs….but Auburn looks GGOOOD! Too Good!
I just dont see us winning at their place. Dawgs could not handle S Carolina’s running game.
And while the defense has several games under its belt, Auburn rushing offense is better than SC and could keep our offense off the field.

But right now, the Dawgs need to be concentrating on Florida. They have lost 3 in a row and you know the Gators are going to bring everything including the kitchen sink to avoid losing 4 in a row.
Time for the Dawgs to shake that monkey uh gator off their backs. But if so, please no dancing in the endzone.

We need to get 3 of the last 4 at a minimum. It starts in Jax.

Go Dawgs!

Jim, not so fast my friend. Floridia is lost on the football field. Georgia’s defense will make the Gators offense look better but not good enough to win. Georgia’s offense is rolling and hard to stop now. They will score enough points to squeak past Florida. USC will take it’s usual swan dive at the end of the season. It’s a lock. Dogs will play for the SEC Championship, however will lose to Alabama or Auburn.

KR….the AU D is improving but not by much. They are still bad and if not for Cam, you guys would have several losses due to the # of points you are giving up. As for the number of hits he is taking, I see it differently….he is handing out a lot of the hits. As a BAMA fan I say the kid is fun to watch.

As for the not looking ahead comment, I have never understood this from fans. It is not ok for your team to look ahead but as a fan, all you can do is talk so I dont see how it makes a difference. You are not going to play so just relax and enjoy the banter.

jumbeauxtiger….I was stunned to see Jefferson start. Neither he or Lee are great QB’s but Lee has impressed me this year by bouncing back after 2 disasterous years of INT problems. If he gets time and reps in the game, I think he could be the guy. This 2 qb system sucks as it doesnt give your QB’s a chance to get into a rythme. Jefferson needs to be left in the locker room.

How strange has this football season been, when defeating a team that has lost it’s past three games in a row signifies a return to glory for Georgia and every team in the SEC East is mathematically viable in week nine to go to the SECCG?

Thank you Auburn, for locking down the First Place position in the BCS. Best of luck with the Hotty Toddies.
