Dawgs, Jackets win; Wisconsin upsets No. 1 Ohio State

The Fearless Friday Forecast:

1. Arkansas at Auburn: This game features the two hottest quarterbacks in the SEC in Ryan Mallett of Arkansas and Cameron Newton of Auburn. I’m giving the edge to Auburn at home and because the Tigers will be able to run the ball with Newton and Michael Dyer and limit Mallett’s posssessions.  Auburn will also play a little more defense with Nick Fairley up front. Auburn 27, Arkansas 21.

2. Vanderbilt at Georgia: The Bulldogs finally showed some signs of life last week in beating Tennessee 41-14 and should be able to take care of a Vanderbilt team  that is still having some issues on offense (11th in the SEC in scoring) when running back Warren Norman does not have a big game.  UGA VIII starts with a win. Georgia 28, Vanderbilt 10.

3. Middle Tennessee State at Georgia Tech: The Yellow Jackets take a break from conference action to play the Blue Raiders of Rick Stockstill. MTSU will be playing its second game with quarterback Dwight Dasher, who sat out the first four games of the season on suspension. Dasher is a good athlete but Tech rolls and starts getting ready for next week’s big trip to Clemson. Georgia Tech 31, MTSU 10.

4. South Carolina at Kentucky:  South Carolina’s upset of No. 1 Alabama last Saturday has the Gamecocks’ fans dreaming of their first-ever trip to the SEC championship game. But those same fans have seen their hopes dashed before when the Gamecocks have stumbled after a big win. If Kentucky RB Derrick Locke (shoulder) can’t go, that changes this game significantly. The Cats’ Randall Cobb is good, but South Carolina wins because of defense. South Carolina 24, Kentucky 20.

5. Ohio State at Wisconsin: Ohio State just moved to No. 1 but the Buckeyes have to play on Saturday night at Camp Randall Stadium, where the Badgers are 40-4 since 2004. Make that 41-4. Our Upset Special for this week:  Wisconsin 17, Ohio State 16.

6. Maryland at Clemson: After three straight losses to Auburn, Miami, and North Carolina, Clemson really needs a win against the 4-1 Terps. Maryland has won three of its last four meetings with the Tigers but Clemson gets it done at home. Clemson 24, Maryland 20.

7. Ole Miss at Alabama: Yes, I know. Ole Miss has had a week off and Alabama is coming of its first regular season loss since the 2007 season. Doesn’t matter. Alabama and Nick Saban are mad, refocused, and have to take it out on somebody. That somebody will be Houston Nutt and the Rebels. Alabama 31, Ole Miss 10.

8. Mississippi State at Florida: For only the second time since Urban Meyer became coach in 2005, Florida has lost two straight games. The Gators have never lost three in a row under Meyer. It will be an ugly game because Florida’s offense is, well, ugly. Mississippi State’s Dan Mullen, the former OC at Florida, will not have a pleasant Homecoming. Florida 21, Miss. State 10.

9. Texas at Nebraska: Some of the national spice got taken out of this game when the Longhorns dropped two straight games to UCLA and Oklahoma. But the folks at Nebraska have had this one circled on the calendar since last December then they lost a controversial Big 12 championship game to the Longhorns. This will be the last time these two teams will meet as members of the Big 12. Nebraska wants it to be a game to remember. Nebraska 23, Texas 14.

10. North Carolina at Virginia: The Tar Heels have had a season of distractions but they are still very much in the ACC Coastal race. The Tar Heels haven’t won in Charlottesville since 1981. That changes Saturday. North Carolina 27, Virginia 20.

…listening to your show yesterday you and Wes were trying to name college players who were good who went back to their school as head coach and had great success. You guys, at the time, could only come up with Spurrier. I had to leave and my question is whether y’all or anyone else ever came up with that guy that played and coached fairly successfully at Alabama…and I am not referrring to Ray Perkins, Mike Dubose or Mike Shula…

No, KidRay, he doesn’t. He picked Colorado over UGA and that was the only time he went against either UGA or GT so far this season…stay tuned.

Yep, Tony is hoping and praying that all those undefeated teams like Ohio State lose….so a one or two loss team from his beloved SEC can play in the NC game. What would the local sports talk radio folks do if its an Oregon/Ohio State NC game?

The head lines in this morning’s Columbus Ledger-Enquirer states the Bulldogs could possibly go to a bowl with a 5-7 record. The reason for this is the SEC has so many bowl tie-ins. The bowl system is a mess, a team should not be rewarded for a losing year or even a 6-6 year. Because of tie-ins a more deserving team will probably be staying home. And Tony supports the BCS and this set up. So for the next no telling how many years they will keep voting on who is lucky enough to play for the so-called National Championship. Also we’ll keep having these meaningless bowls which a few thousand fans in attendance.

Not sure if you watched the Tennessee game last week but Turnovers gave Georgia the game. Happy for the win but I doubt Vandy will cough up the ball quite as often. Georgia will have to work for points. The real question is how many times will Georgia give up the ball. Vandy is every but as good as Colorado and Missippi State. Tennessee had a complete meltdown last week. Georgia has not gotten any better.

Don’t think Arkansas has faced an offense like Auburns. Auburn forces defenses to defend all 11 players. If Arkansas does not turn the ball over, they can win this game, plus their at home. No real logic to it, I just think Texas has the talent to put a game together at some point. Nebraska’s kids are flying high after the big win in Manhattan last week and have the opportunity for a let down. The rest of the games either don’t interest me (here’s looking at you ACC) or won’t be close.

Only pick I disagree with is OSU-WI. Buckeyes are too good for the Badgers. OSU’s toughest game will be against Iowa.

Leave Jake alone.

The 11 men Auburn’s offense forces you to defend are Cam, the two-deep at each skill position (2 RB’s, 2 TE’s, 4 WR’s), Malzahn, and Chizik.

By Arkansas playing “at home”, Jake meant Arkansas is comfortable with who they are as individuals and feel “at home” with themselves wherever they play.

Makes prefect sense.

If it boils down to a Oregon/Ohio State NC game, then I will not be watching. Just because you’re undefeated against weak opponents, doesn’t put you on the same level with teams like BAMA, Florida, Oklahoma or Texas that must face each other (usually) in a conference championship game. Make all the conferences that do not have a championship game play each other. Solves the playoff issue & eliminates the pretenders.

I’m a bama fan but there is alot of ball to be played although I hope you’re right last year was fun. The thing that ticks me off is conference championship games. I apparently hurt his or her feelings by suggesting that Georgia Tech football was meaningless. Maybe that’s too strong a word, but the fact is that GT is not built to be a big time football school. They don’t have the stadium, facilities, and general college town atmosphere to recruit against UGA, Alabama, Florida, etc. Sure, they’ll get a kid or two here and there but they won’t have the depth. CPJ has a nice offense and seems to be a good leader but you don’t win big time football games without big time talent.

You start out a conversation by saying another team plays ‘meaningless’ football and don’t expect to have any back lash? Was not my first question to you that if GT football is meaningless, then why is GT in your fight song irrespective of when the song was written? If GT football is meaningless, replace ‘Yellow Jackets’ with some other team that is not ‘meaningless’. You’ve yet to posit an argument that holds water as to why a ‘meaningless’ football team will still remain in your fight song.

An Alabama fan is going to even mention intelligence with a Tech Alum…good luck with that

Ok…well if what you said about GT football is true, then the same argument can be made about Alabama ‘academics’.

…therefore, Alabama has ‘meaningless’ diplomas

BAMA Dude,
I agree that we are not set up to be a football powerhouse in the current landscape…but we can steal some big wins here and there.

And we don’t necessarily need a ton of talent if our coaching is better than most other teams’.

You should know as well as anybody that having a great coach (Saban is the best in the country in my opinion) can beat better talent. I personally believe that last year Florida had better talent than Bama.

We definitely do need better talent than we currently have, but if the wins come, better players will come too. No, we will never get 5-star players up and down the board, but with solid classes with a 5 star occasionally and a mix of 4 star guys, we can compete with the big boys.

Ok Tony, not sure about your Auburn vs. the Hogs pick. I know the game is at Auburns house, but I like the way Arkansas has moved the ball and I think they’ll be able to get an early lead and take Auburn away from their game plan in the second half. I’m taking Arkansas in this one. Also, look out Ole Miss. Alabama is an angry bunch and I think they’ll take Masoli and crew to the woodshed. Maybe Masoli will get back by stealing some crap in Tuscaloosa and taking it back to Oxford.

Texas will get whooped by Nebraska. Do you have any idea how much the entire state of Nebraska hates UT? Folks in Omaha and Lincoln hope Austin gets swallowed by Mexico; I’m serious. Spend any time in NB, and you’ll see how much they foam at the mouth with the thought of kicking Texas’ butt. The debacle in last year’s Big 12 title game is on everyone’s mind, and with the game being played at Memorial Stadium, that place will be rocking, and don’t expect that famous Husker Hospitality. Texas is showing up to a gun fight with a butter knife. Sorry Mac Brown, but it’s going to be a long Saturday in Lincoln.

Don’t sleep on Oregon State @ Washington. Is Jake Locker really that bad? Or is it, they just don’t have the surrounding cast of athletes and a competent offensive line that other quality QBs around the country have? I think it’s a combination of both, and he was a little hyped up too much pre-season. Oregon State and UDUB on ESPN Saturday night at Husky Stadium will be a good one.

Wisconsin hosting Ohio State will be a ESPN “Instant” Classic. I just see this game being slugged out until the last possession, and a turnover here or there, a special teams play, turning the table either way. You have to like the Badgers home record at Camp Randal, and how tough they are especially in night games. Pryor either cements himself with a Heisman moment or two, or he looks lackluster or handcuffed with conservative sweater-vest Tressel. IF Ohio State comes out throwing the ball like they did vs. Oregon in the Rose Bowl, Ohio State wins. IF they get all unadventurous than I like the Badgers in Madison.

October 15th, 2010
11:20 am

I can’t wait to see Ohio St. “upset” this weekend. The most overhyped, overrated, overexposed conference in the nation is a total joke. I said last year that since the Little 11 FINALLY had a respectable showing in the bowls for a change, to watch the Little 11 homer media cream their pants and put 75% of the conference in the preseason polls. Well, I was nearly correct in my assumption. Even now at the halfway mark look at how many of their teams have already slide their way out of the top rankings. OSU is the biggest fraud in the nation that benefits, year after year, from a biased, midwestern loving media that will no matter what keep the Suckeyes around the top 5 year in and year out. If OSU had finished last year at 2-10 they would have still been a preseason top 5 team this year. It’s just a matter of time before they are exposed, as usual. No better reason for it to happen one week in to their undeserving top spot.

BCS is terrible.

October 15th, 2010
11:23 am

Hate to think local paper was biased towards local team. What a travesty!!

6 BCS conferences, each have to play a championship game, winners make into playoffs, possible 2 at-large bids for the Boise St.’s TCUs of the world. Take away the patsy OOC games and the month long break in December. Add a couple more off weekends to give the kids a break.

Bam!! You have a playoff system that works. Use the current BCS bowls to play the games in and add a couple extras for the semis and NC.

Why wouldn’t this week

BCS is terrible.

October 15th, 2010

BAMA dude

BCS is terrible, my proposal went one better, including two more at large teams just like the BCS works now. The caveat is that the at large teams wouldn’t get a week off. Those four teams would play two games at a neutral site with the winners advancing to the 8 team playoff as the 7 and 8 seeds then going on the road. This gives the top six seeds a reward for winning a big time conference. Of course, I would want every conference to have a championship game as well.

Arkansas at Auburn …the big wide receivers for Arkansas against weak DB’s for Auburn. Wide open Auburn and Newton against spotty LB’s for Arkansas. Can Auburn keep up the pressure for 4 out of the last 5 weeks?
Arkansas 38 Auburn 35 on a late field goal. No rolling Toomers Corner this weekend.

South Carolina at Kentucky….can USC keep up with the pressure of leading the East? Kentucky has been in every game except UF and they are at home. Spurrier saw what Auburn did last week and how Auburn folded in the second half and had to make a final drive to win. USC needs to keep up the intensity, something USC has had problems with after a big win.
Kentucky 28 USC 24

Mississippi State at UF….Dan Mullen was the ringmaster while at UF. Now he is erecting a Big Top Tent of his own in Starkville, but the players in his new gig are not the caliber he had at Florida.
UF will not lose three in a row…
UF 40 MSU 28

Ohio St. at Wisconsin
The annual every other year loss in Badgerland for The Buckeyes. Wisconsin needs this win more than the Buckeyes and will have a tie breaker over OSU with a win.
Wisconsin 31 Ohio St. 20

Vandy at UGA in Athens..the swagger is back against a very weak Commodore team..
AJ catches 3, Durham catches 1, Ealey runs for 1 , Murray runs for 1…in a blow out by halftime..
UGA 51 Vandy 17

MTSU at GT….GT wins big and scores early , middle…late…
GT 48 MTSU 21

Ole Miss at Alabama…pay back time in a very late start in Tuscaloosa….
Alabama 42 Ole Miss 17

Texas at Nebraska…has Nebraska really played anybody? Great Offense against some weak defenses….Texas is not a weak defense..in an upset
Texas 28 Nebraska 20

Oh, and Bama ranks 16th and 35th (25.5 avg. ranking) respectively in the yards gained and yards allowed category despite a tough schedule. These numbers fall right in line with most other contenders:

Ohio St. 10th/13th (11.5 avg.)
Oregon 1st/64th (32.5 avg.)
Nebraska 29th/7th (18 avg.)
LSU 65th/14th (39.5 avg)
Auburn 6th/58th (32 avg.)
BSU 20th/1st (10.5 avg)- gave up almost 30% of their yards to VT
TCU 7th/8th (7.5 avg)

Oregon’s poor defense should bite them at some point, the way Alabama’s mediocre defense bit them. Sometimes your offense just doesn’t punch it in. Not much on their schedule though, so who knows? Based on these stats, assuming that SOS will keep the little guys out, you’d have to project tOSU and Nebraska as the MNC game. Will be interesting to watch.

When posting predictions don’t tell the upset you are predicting is possible because everybody knows an upset is possible…What folks really want to know what upset is PROBABLE….that being said…
USC will whip kentucky
USC will win the East
USC will beat whoever the West puts up (LSU, AUB, BAMA, ARK) and will have a BILLION fans in Atlanta cheering for them too.
USC will Not use the milk-toast defense they used against AUB…the lesson was learned
USC will use the defense they employed against BAMA and UGA
USC will roll into Glendale with an army of fans and take over that NC game…
USC rides a cinderella season by ending it with both the SEC CHAMPS and NC.
and the SEC is proud that another SEC school wins it all in football but Urban, Saban, Miles, CHEEZIT, the other head coaches and Richt all fume about it too….but too bad….smiles everyone…we still happy in Columbia too!

Bama Dude….I agree with you on the Oregon Ducks and the lack of defense…if a team lines up and just runs it down their throats and keep Oregon off the field, it leads to a large margin win for whoever is playing the ducks. Oregon is just horrible and I mean horrible on defense and how do you beat a good offense, keep their defense on the field. Every year Oregon will slip up and lose one or two, no different this year.

Hey I agree USC is the real deal this year, but where have you SC fans been in YEARS past? You wait until your team has a couple signature wins and have the upper hand on winning the East before you start getting on here running your pie-holes? It’s not much to brag about beating UGA this year. Colorado did it, yet the same UGA backers are on here every week not just when UGA wins. I will be curious to see what happens next year when your team is not doing so well to see if all of you are still on here… My guess, probably not. But I guess enjoy it while you can. Your team has earned it.
SC fans, act like you expect to be here. There is a lot of bent up frustration because you had to wait so long. I get it, but as of today you still:
A. Have not won the SEC East
B. Have not won the SEC Championship
C. Have yet to be in a BCS Bowl game
Y’all are already acting as if you have done all three!. I mean congrats on the great season your team is having. They don’t have much of a challenge until the SEC CG, but it is the SEC and you never know what will happen.

[[[ BAMA DUDE & 5 STAR RECRUITING GIRL ]]]

Ok fellas, love the passion but I’ve got to disagree with you wholeheartedly. (first off, Bama Dude- as much as I hate Oregon State, they have lost to two Top 5 teams ON THE ROAD nevertheless, and were in each game in the 4th qt. You sound badly informed when you say they were thumped, and they just went on the road to beat top 10 team in the other team’s house. They are a top 25 team. Jake Locker was dubbed Prom King before the year started and will be the NFL’s #1 or #2 draft pick come April. Pencil that one in. He’s a jack@ss, and I hope they drop football at UW, but the fact is he’s a talent and the people around him just suck.)

Your points on Oregon….. you guys couldn’t be further from the truth. Taking a broad sweeping stroke and judging a team solely on yards gained, and yards allowed is rather foolish boys. I know I’m just a tree hugger hippie, wearing wears hemp sandals who’s from Eugene Oregon, but hear me out. Do the Oregon Ducks have a championship-level defense? That might be the big question for the Ducks. The defense is a bit on the smallish side, but it is fast and relentless, and it is well-conditioned Oregon that ends up being the fresher team in the second half. The Ducks have allowed only 13 second-half points, and the havoc they cause is evident in the 22 turnovers they have forced, leading the nation in that category. We are constantly in the bottom of the NCAA for time of possession, you know why? Because we score so freaking quickly. Our defense FOR TWO YEARS IN A ROW has played the most snaps of any ‘d’ in football. So yes we will give up more yards. LOOK AT YARDS PER PLAY, that’s a telling state. We are in the nation’s Top 20, and only trail the best defense ever built by man, Alabama’s by a few percentage points.

The Ducks have the most-feared offense in the nation, averaging 567.0 yards and 54.3 points per game — both marks are No. 1 in the country. The suspension and transfer of QB Jeremiah Masoli had the potential to derail the offense, but sophomore QB Darron Thomas has led the offense with a steady hand, passing and running with aplomb out of the read-option attack. And when he was sidelined with a shoulder injury against Washington State, senior Nate Costa stepped in and didn’t miss a beat. Meanwhile, no one seems to be able to stop RB LaMichael James, a burner who leads the nation with 169.6 rushing yards per game. Darron Thomas is healthy, he got nicked up at Wazzu, by why put him back in against the Cougars? Your sister’s friends could beat Washington State. After Barner was taken away in an ambulance, Thomas was banged up on one play; coaches said screw it- just put in Costa and let’s get out of dodge.

I’m ok with our defense. Sure were undersized, and yes we might give up some yards. Just go ahead, and try and smash mouth us into the grass and ‘run it up our gut.’ I dare you. Ask Stanford how that worked out for them. Before Stanford played us, go and read what Tony was saying how wonderful old school football they were playing and how they’d stack up nicely in the SEC… not just him, bloggers/college football pundits from Gainesville, to Orlando, to Colombia, to Atlanta.

Maybe this is their year, maybe it ain’t…4 teams to have never made the SECCG : Kentucky, Vandy, South Carolina and Ole Missy…As you can see, Florida (10), Tennessee (5) and Georgia (3) have dominated the East. Getting there is only the entry ticket to the dance. You still have to boogie when you get there and score more points than the other team.

Trust me, we were not in the parking lot tailgating in the third quarter when Oregon had the lead vs. Ohio State in the Rose Bowl, we knew that showing up in BCS games is where you really get judged. Yell at me as much as you’d like, but that loss I’m throwing almost entirely on Masoli. Show me one good throw he made in that game? (actually all year, he only had a few pretty long balls) Masoli’s inability to consistently hit open guys across the middle of the field 10+ yards and his inability to hit targets streaking down the sidelines and deep post rights, was Oregon’s downfall. Look at Ohio State’s offensive numbers, go check them out. Pryor beat us. Their RB’s averaged less than 3yds a carry on us, they didn’t gash us. Pryor’s athleticism was the difference and kudos to the kid. OSU stacked the box with 17 defenders, and Masoli never could hit open receivers. Therefore, they bottled up L James, Blount, and Kenyon Barner. Simple as that.

Washington Duck….

Love the fact you are such a Duck Homer..good for you….but put anyone of the following teams in the PAC and they would lead the nation in offense: Auburn, South Carolina, Florida St. Georgia Tech, Arkansas, and on top of that with the defenses on any of these teams they would have better numbers than YOUR Oregon Ducks squad.

We all saw what happened against a very average Buckeye team last year when the Ducks were favored by what 11 points.

All those stats are relevant to the teams you are playing against. Last year when your offense was this potent juggernaut did you not get manhandled by a Boise St team?

Once again I appreciate the fact you support your PAC 10 Weakling conference..with USC on probation, Washington St. playing like a Division II program, Stanford having zero defense, Arizona St. is about as consistent as Obama’s Health care policy, and Oregon St. only having Mike Riley keeps them relevant.

We will see Oregon drop another game no one cares about and fall out of the view of ESPN and the rest of the nation.

So, you think Stanford runs the ball with anybody, eh? Their leading back averages 4.9 a carry. I watched some of the Oregon-Arizona St. game and wanted to vomit the football was so ugly. Looked like Arena ball out there. That defense is middle of the pack at best and there will be times when the offense doesn’t score as many points. Turnovers, dropped passes, penalties, sacks, etc. happen to everyone. You only win a MNC by having your defense keep you in games when they do. Oregon’s front would have a tough time getting off the field against a big OL from Bama or LSU.

Charles,

I’m going to answer you because I assume you made a typo and not an insult. McElroy does in fact have a tendency to hold onto the ball and not take risks. Our defense this year, while still athletic, just isn’t sound enough to dominate games like they did in 2008 and 2009. We need him to take some shots down field.

That said, there has been rampant speculation that he was playing hurt last week. Who knows?

The playcalling (i.e. coaching) was fairly straight forward and nothing special on either sideline. S. Car. won because their players executed. For example, BAMA’s D-line was blown off the ball almost every play. Spurrier, to my knowledge, does not coach O-line.

OKAY Lets call out some obnoxious fans..so lets make sure the fans at these schools understand it is only for those who have no clue how to show class.

USC act like you have been a contender before…oh that is right you never have been a contender in the SEC before.

UGA what are you guys going to do when your best players are gone next year and there is no AJ Green or Kris Durham to get the ball to and your great offensive line is gone?
USC you are a senior laden squad and the only player with talent returning is Lattimore and without any other playmakers around him…expect a long long season in the coming years.

AJ Green is the best reciever in the league and the most likely to be suspended by the NCAA …oh yeah that already happened….. And Alshon Jeffries as of today is the Best reciever in the league.

USC will be an underdog if they get past Kentucky, and Florida on the road against Auburn, Alabama, and LSU.

The only reason UGA will have a winning record next year is the weakest schedule of any SEC school in 2011.

How is UGA planning on having a Spring game when a large number of players will be doing community service for multiple law enforcement violations…just joking…UGA has some great young men on their team. and they do graduate their players…just having fun.

How does a team get “WHOOPED” by another team, if they have the lead in the 4th quarter, and have an even statistical showing with the other team? You just sound dumber and dumber man, seriously , no offense. Ohio State did not get whooped as you say in that Rose Bowl. Go back and find some film.

This arena ball football that you say we play seemed to do just fine in Knoxville. 49-13 if I recall correctly. Ohhhhh you say, “You beat the worst SEC team in our conference this year, they are dreadful. You’re a joke – Pac 10 sucks” Blah Blah Blah. Pretty sure that same wretched, weak Tennessee team went into Baton Rouge and nearly walked out of there with a win. YOU just said LSU and Alabama would walk all over Oregon, so your argument doesn’t really stand very strong.

Of course I’m an Oregon homer. No doubt about it. I’m not an idiot though who can’t put down the Duck Kool-Aid and admit when we got our asses handed to us. That loss to Ohio State was not an ass whooping. Sure we lost, straight up. No excuses.

I’ll most likely choose a lawyer with a degree from Emory, UGA or GSU, I know more of them and they tend not to wear one of those silly boxes/hats on their head.:)
By the way, I believe this will be the one game Auburn looses this year, because their secondary is the weak link in the defense. But if Arky does not stop AU’s offense, then it’s going to be a long afternoon for the hogs. Once that offense gets rolling the only thing stops them seems to be the coaches on he sideline trying to milk the clock.
It has been fun, I will check in tomorrow after all the SEC ad ACC games for more fun.

BAMA dude

AJ Green- Better leaper, faster, drops fewer passes, plays in an offense that affords receivers opportunity for big stats and is used as a big play threat.

Julio Jones- Bigger and stronger, better runner after the catch, superior blocker, drops a few too many but offsets with some spectacular catches, plays in a run first offense and is utilized as a possession receiver. Also returns punts.

As some have said, either would start for most any team in the country and both will go in the first round. They are different types of players, both being very well suited for what they are asked to do. I haven’t seen any WR in college football grab a screen pass, stiff arm a CB to the ground, and get a big gain better than Julio. I’ll take either of them, thank you.

Les Miles is Les Miles, there’s no game he can’t lose and LSU was probably caught looking ahead to Florida the next week. See. that’s life in the SEC. Look at Bama. You Dawg fans who keep repeating “30-24″ like a mantra enjoy yourselves all you want. The thing is… Tech alumni and fans have lives that don’t depend entirely on what a bunch of kids does on Saturday afternoons. College sports are fun to follow, but the biggest reason for going to college is to get an education.

UGA fans don’t seem to care about anything but football, and they don’t care if their players are enrolled in silly majors that no parents who are paying the bills would send their kids to UGA for. The very few football and basketball players who graduate have no job opportunities and end up unemployed or working in menial jobs that hardly require a college degree.

Georgia Tech is a real school with serious academic standards, and that includes scholarshipped athletes. UGA has a long history of being a party school, where parents send their kids for an easy degree, even if the degree itself is practically worthless.

Jan Kemp exposed the crap going on at UGA with athletes being enrolled in courses a ten-year-old kid could pass. That was almost three decades ago, and nothing has changed. If anything, the abuses are more blatant today. Way too many illiterate morons are being recruited, and the very high arrest rate shows clearly that Richt does not care if his players have any morals or self-discipline.

The bottom line is that most Tech fans have very good jobs and productive lives that don’t depend on Tech’s football record for their happiness in life. It would be great to beat UGA more often, but when you put scholar-athletes up against dummy-athletes, it’s usually no contest.

It’s pretty pathetic to see UGA fans who typically have never been within miles of a college classroom and who live or die with UGA’s weekly results on the football field.

So keep on posting your “30-24″ all you want, especially since you’re home with plenty of time on your hands. I wish you well, maybe you’ll get lucky and get your old job back at the Waffle House before your unemployment checks stop coming.

It’s kind of sad to see all the Dawg fans getting so excited this year (just like the year before, the year before that, etc.). How long is it going to take for UGA fans to realize that UGA is simply no longer relevant in the SEC? In the national picture, UGA isn’t even a blip on the radar, and hasn’t been since the preseason #1 ranking two years ago.

Sit back and be grateful for the seven or eight wins you’ll get every year. Coaching genius Mark Richt may take you to 8-4 or even 9-3 occasionally, but Florida will still win the SEC, meaning no BCS bowls and no top 10 final ranking. Most years, UGA will be very lucky to finish in the top 25, and only after a big bowl win over a nobody opponent.

It’s a different world now, and Dawg fans need to adjust their expectations downward to reflect reality.

Unfortunately nothing is going to change until UGA changes its mediocre coaching. That’s where the difference is, and that’s why everyone outside Dawgtard Nation just laughs at Dawg fans getting so excited year after year about what a great recruiting class UGA gets. It doesn’t matter how many blue chip high school players go to UGA, they simply don’t get the coaching they would get at Florida or Alabama, to name two schools whose programs are far ahead of UGA. And that’s not going to change as long as Mark Richt is in Athens.

Get your heads out of the sand and face reality. And mediocrity and irrelevance.

You guys rolled out the red carpet for Quincy Carter when he was coming out of high school. And all the thugs you’ve had on your basketball and football teams over the years speak for themselves. WashingtonDuck…blind..

Okay where to start….well sir, I do not live in Alabama. I reside in the Sunshine state and happily support my family by owing a company that actually does work in your lovely state of Washington as well as Oregon. I have attended a few sporting events on Oregons campus…I will date myself now..I came out to see Steve Prefontaine run while I was attending school as an Student Athletic Trainer. Lovely Lovely campus….Yes I am a season ticket holder for Alabama Football games as well as Georgia Tech, but I have not attended one single game this year on either campus. I have a child who is in gymnastics and every Sunday we have meets to attend. I do not smoke, drink only white wine(not out of a box either) and unlike you I run and workout daily. As for why I have time to be on this blog today is we took today off for my employees instead of this past monday’s holiday and here in Key West the Herald does a horrible job covering College Football.

I will work very hard to keep from calling you names, making accusations or calling your state a liberal bed of backwards a$$ hillbillies who are in close competition with Arkansas with the amount of people who have married a relative. If it were not for Phil Knight the state would be known as the logger state with the ugliest women in the U.S.

I will tell you why a school like UGA, Alabama, UF, GT, LSU, Auburn or South Carolina will not play you in a home home series…you are a glorified BOISE ST. That is right., Oregon has a pathetic little stadium, every 3 to 5 years the Ducks have a decent team and there would be no payoff to playing you or Boise St. The cost of travel is horrible and the reward is minimal to none. The only reason Tennessee scheduled you was because at the time Fat Phil wanted to recruit more players from the West Coast and he thought he would still be there.

As a proud SEC, ACC we can schedule a team like Michigan( which Alabama did) or a Oklahoma St.(like UGA did last year) because of the national recognition it truly brings. When a team from the SEC beats a team from the BIG TEN, BIG 12 it means something. When we beat a team from the PAC 10 it means either of two thing….1) a SEC team beats a weak team from a passive conference and blah blah blah…or 2) we are scheduling a team that is a National contender year in an year out..which for the past 3 decades excluding the USC Trojans have not be viable in the National Picture. If a team like UGA beats a Oregon team the payoff is The dawgs were suppose to win, no bonus points there, but if a UGA team loses to PAC 10 little sister then the world spends 3 weeks or until that team that beat UGA or the SEC team gets pounded by another poor PAC 10 team. The risk reward for playing OREGON is the same as Boise ST.

Everytime and I mean EVERYTIME Oregon has played a game to get them in or keep them in a title hunt the DUCKS have folded their tents or have players who have slugged an opposing player or having their star qb kicked off for stealing…heck even at UGA the players know better than to steal from someone (with the exception of a bike helmet) .

So go ahead an blah blah blah and whine whine whine…until Oregon lines up each week and plays a conference schedule as grueling as in the SEC KEEP YOUR GLORIFIED TREE HUGGING, NO DEODORANT WEARING , COON SKIN WEARING OPINIONS ABOUT US SOUTHERNS AND OUR FOOTBALL to your friends who believe the hype from ESPN.
SEC has 4 schools with BCS titles in 15 years, The ACC has 3 teams with NATIONAL Titles in 20 years, The Pac 10 has 1 in USC they have to forfeit one of those….

I’m glad we all agree that Tech will never be great. Becuase that’s what Tech folks expect, right? 7-5 seasons in D-1 ball is about as good as you can expect from a medium-sized university so academically one-dimensional and focused on research and academic rankings using sports only as advertising, right?

OH WAIT! I seem to remember a certain lying Athletics Director saying something to that effect to GT alumni and then getting canned in favor of a guy with SEC ties who has since begun our long, difficult road to recovery in almost all sports (some sports, thank God, did not fall to D-3 levels). This, of course, is magically coinciding with the rise of our liberal arts, business, economics and “soft sciences” programs (the undergrad and graduate Management degrees from Tech are now outranking UGA’s Terry College and are catching up with those from Emory)and a planned growth of campus and total enrollment (Tech is now over 20k students body.)

So…that old “little academic school” pigeon hole is getting quite cramped. Soon enough it’ll be too tight to stay in.

(before I get flamed, understand that I never made any prognostication of any of the sports teams…only that 7-5 football seasons in the admittedly droopy ACC is not and NEVER WAS good enough)

You’ll find Tech’s management degree (yes, that’s its official title…no quotes needed) is indeed on a brisk climb the last few years. Best public program in the state now according to the rankings. It’s not a personal cut, just a calrification I was trying to make.

And as far as GSU football goes…come play us in our “empty” (40k+ avg is still way more than your ~15k) little stadium and see if you like the outcome. You’ve got to be a Georgia fan…the Staters I know don’t crow against Tech this much…we’ve done nothing to make them hate us like that. But seriously, yall don’t even have your first winning season secured yet (in 1-AA ball) and you’re gonna beat your chest that way to ANY BCS team?!! I don’t care if it’s Washington State…y’aint there yet.

This must be what FSU or Miami fans felt like listening to USF fans when the bulls started up…

Why do folks pick on Tech fans on this blog? Could it be due to the fact that the bug fans have been so obnoxious since GT hired Chan Gailey? All that we heard on these blogs was how Tech was “back” in the CFB hunt. Then you guys fired Chan and hired some guy who still thinks that he can compete in upper echelon CFB with a tired old offensive scheme that ran it’s course in the 1970’s. Once again, you trumpeted your “return to glory”.

I know that Georgia Tech was once a true powerhouse in CFB, but that was a long, long time ago. The same could be said of Vandy, or even Suwanee, for that matter. There is no shame in choosing to deemphasize your athletics program. Just don’t come here bragging about being back in the top tier of CFB until you’ve done something to prove it. And no, winning the ACC Championship doesn’t qualify as “proving it”.

Here’s the other thing that annoys CFB fans. When you are faced with the fact that you haven’t actually returned to dominance — even in your home state, much less the nation; don’t try to change the subject by bragging about your academic excellence. Nobody cares. This is a football blog.

When you guys accomplish something noteworthy in football, then I’ll be the first to congratulate you for your success. Until then, you should refrain from complaining about the football programs that actually are successful. It only makes you appear small-minded and petty.

In closing, I would like to wish you the best of luck in your upcoming contest with Middle Tennessee State University. I like Tech to win this one.

Been to Wisconsin’s campus in Madison, and it’s a really good campus. However, I’d just as soon seen OSU go down because of ESPN’s shameless promotion of their QB for Heisman. Amazingly, it all came about because he had one very good game in the Rose Bowl last year, must have been a career game. Personally, I would like to see the Heisman board select a player that carries a team on his back for a season, rather than one that benefits having superior talent around them.

Kinda like Josh Nesbit….. He carries his team, the team is very average at best, but that is what the Heisman was all about…….. We have these ESPN blowhards who make it a popularity contest, with the biggest media usually tipping the scales…

Damon Evans:

Your argument is so last year and had been turned inside out multiple times, but for your weak minded self we will just hit a couple of points.

The SEC put up to 10 teams in some years in Bowl Games while every other Conference places 6 to 7. Therefore many 10 and 9 are playing others 5, 6, and 7s.

BUT HERE IS THE REAL NUMBER….IN TITLE GAMES WHAT IS THE NUMBER? Everytime it mattered the SEC wins in the big BCS Championship game.

In the next few years, tech will have its hands full with local football rivalries with Kennessaw State, SCAD Atlanta, and Georgia Gwinnett College. If tech is lucky, maybe the Agnes Scott Scotties will schedule the tech honey bees for homecoming, and all the tech virgins will finally see real, live women. Things are looking up at tech. Well, except football attendance, but no surprise there.

Auburn has that disease that LSU has, close with anybody they play. I think in Auburn’s part it is the protection of their quarterback. Once they win a game they put Newton into less punishing play calling. In LSU’s I think they have some of Georgia’s celebrate before the gun goes off mentality but the talent to back it up.

I think Vandy will do much better with Ga. than Tony thinks. First Georgai proved nothing last week against the weakest team in the SEC and Vandy is better than at least Mississippi, which is not much worse than Georgia if at all.

South Carolina is quarantined for excessive celebration this week against a much better team than its record in Kentucky. If they lose one this may be it, but Spurrier is the best coach in the SEC maybe the best they ever had. Tony watch and learn on this one, how great coaches bring it every week which not even your Bama boys can do. Bama has the best team in the SEC, South Carolina has the best coach.

Does anyone doubt next week LSU knocks Newton out of the game?

Newton was 80% of Auburn’s offense. He will not get those easy runs next week and with LSU’s shut down corners ..expect 7 men in the box and dare Cam to try and throw it.

First let me say that our offense stinks. Now the chance of UGA beating us at the party really is a possibility. The coach isn’t preparing our guys like in the past, as the size and speed hasn’t changed, but the execution has gone way down.

Tony, you really are having a hard time living up to Mr. College Football, as you do not have your pulse on what’s really happening.

LSU puts 8 men in box, Newton goes over top. Folks, all he is doing is taking what the opposing defense is giving him. The kid can and has thrown the football well. Go check his stats at http://www.sec.com and compare to other sec qb’s, you”ll be very surprised at how good the numbers are. He isn’t just some dog and pony show. Amazingly he really isnt getting hit that hard.
