Dawgs, Jackets win; Wisconsin upsets No. 1 Ohio State

The Fearless Friday Forecast:

1. Arkansas at Auburn: This game features the two hottest quarterbacks in the SEC in Ryan Mallett of Arkansas and Cameron Newton of Auburn. I’m giving the edge to Auburn at home and because the Tigers will be able to run the ball with Newton and Michael Dyer and limit Mallett’s posssessions.  Auburn will also play a little more defense with Nick Fairley up front. Auburn 27, Arkansas 21.

2. Vanderbilt at Georgia: The Bulldogs finally showed some signs of life last week in beating Tennessee 41-14 and should be able to take care of a Vanderbilt team  that is still having some issues on offense (11th in the SEC in scoring) when running back Warren Norman does not have a big game.  UGA VIII starts with a win. Georgia 28, Vanderbilt 10.

3. Middle Tennessee State at Georgia Tech: The Yellow Jackets take a break from conference action to play the Blue Raiders of Rick Stockstill. MTSU will be playing its second game with quarterback Dwight Dasher, who sat out the first four games of the season on suspension. Dasher is a good athlete but Tech rolls and starts getting ready for next week’s big trip to Clemson. Georgia Tech 31, MTSU 10.

4. South Carolina at Kentucky:  South Carolina’s upset of No. 1 Alabama last Saturday has the Gamecocks’ fans dreaming of their first-ever trip to the SEC championship game. But those same fans have seen their hopes dashed before when the Gamecocks have stumbled after a big win. If Kentucky RB Derrick Locke (shoulder) can’t go, that changes this game significantly. The Cats’ Randall Cobb is good, but South Carolina wins because of defense. South Carolina 24, Kentucky 20.

5. Ohio State at Wisconsin: Ohio State just moved to No. 1 but the Buckeyes have to play on Saturday night at Camp Randall Stadium, where the Badgers are 40-4 since 2004. Make that 41-4. Our Upset Special for this week:  Wisconsin 17, Ohio State 16.

6. Maryland at Clemson: After three straight losses to Auburn, Miami, and North Carolina, Clemson really needs a win against the 4-1 Terps. Maryland has won three of its last four meetings with the Tigers but Clemson gets it done at home. Clemson 24, Maryland 20.

7. Ole Miss at Alabama: Yes, I know. Ole Miss has had a week off and Alabama is coming of its first regular season loss since the 2007 season. Doesn’t matter. Alabama and Nick Saban are mad, refocused, and have to take it out on somebody. That somebody will be Houston Nutt and the Rebels. Alabama 31, Ole Miss 10.

8. Mississippi State at Florida: For only the second time since Urban Meyer became coach in 2005, Florida has lost two straight games. The Gators have never lost three in a row under Meyer. It will be an ugly game because Florida’s offense is, well, ugly. Mississippi State’s Dan Mullen, the former OC at Florida, will not have a pleasant Homecoming. Florida 21, Miss. State 10.

9. Texas at Nebraska: Some of the national spice got taken out of this game when the Longhorns dropped two straight games to UCLA and Oklahoma. But the folks at Nebraska have had this one circled on the calendar since last December then they lost a controversial Big 12 championship game to the Longhorns. This will be the last time these two teams will meet as members of the Big 12. Nebraska wants it to be a game to remember. Nebraska 23, Texas 14.

10. North Carolina at Virginia: The Tar Heels have had a season of distractions but they are still very much in the ACC Coastal race. The Tar Heels haven’t won in Charlottesville since 1981. That changes Saturday. North Carolina 27, Virginia 20.

UGA wins big 51-10. The real shock will be the upset of South Carolina and UF. Look for Garcia to have 3 picks and a fumble and UGA will be within 1.5 games of the eastern division leader.

Hey I agree USC is the real deal this year, but where have you SC fans been in YEARS past? You wait until your team has a couple signature wins and have the upper hand on winning the East before you start getting on here running your pie-holes? It’s not much to brag about beating UGA this year. Colorado did it, yet the same UGA backers are on here every week not just when UGA wins. I will be curious to see what happens next year when your team is not doing so well to see if all of you are still on here… My guess, probably not. But I guess enjoy it while you can. Your team has earned it.
SC fans, act like you expect to be here. There is a lot of bent up frustration because you had to wait so long. I get it, but as of today you still:
A. Have not won the SEC East
B. Have not won the SEC Championship
C. Have yet to be in a BCS Bowl game
Y’all are already acting as if you have done all three!. I mean congrats on the great season your team is having. They don’t have much of a challenge until the SEC CG, but it is the SEC and you never know what will happen.

Well… Alrighty then. SC has exactly two more games this season that warrant bragging — if you win them.

[[[ BAMA DUDE & 5 STAR RECRUITING GIRL ]]]

Ok fellas, love the passion but I’ve got to disagree with you wholeheartedly. (first off, Bama Dude- as much as I hate Oregon State, they have lost to two Top 5 teams ON THE ROAD nevertheless, and were in each game in the 4th qt. You sound badly informed when you say they were thumped, and they just went on the road to beat top 10 team in the other team’s house. They are a top 25 team. Jake Locker was dubbed Prom King before the year started and will be the NFL’s #1 or #2 draft pick come April. Pencil that one in. He’s a jack@ss, and I hope they drop football at UW, but the fact is he’s a talent and the people around him just suck.)

Your points on Oregon….. you guys couldn’t be further from the truth. Taking a broad sweeping stroke and judging a team solely on yards gained, and yards allowed is rather foolish boys. I know I’m just a tree hugger hippie, wearing wears hemp sandals who’s from Eugene Oregon, but hear me out. Do the Oregon Ducks have a championship-level defense? That might be the big question for the Ducks. The defense is a bit on the smallish side, but it is fast and relentless, and it is well-conditioned Oregon that ends up being the fresher team in the second half. The Ducks have allowed only 13 second-half points, and the havoc they cause is evident in the 22 turnovers they have forced, leading the nation in that category. We are constantly in the bottom of the NCAA for time of possession, you know why? Because we score so freaking quickly. Our defense FOR TWO YEARS IN A ROW has played the most snaps of any ‘d’ in football. So yes we will give up more yards. LOOK AT YARDS PER PLAY, that’s a telling state. We are in the nation’s Top 20, and only trail the best defense ever built by man, Alabama’s by a few percentage points.

The Ducks have the most-feared offense in the nation, averaging 567.0 yards and 54.3 points per game — both marks are No. 1 in the country. The suspension and transfer of QB Jeremiah Masoli had the potential to derail the offense, but sophomore QB Darron Thomas has led the offense with a steady hand, passing and running with aplomb out of the read-option attack. And when he was sidelined with a shoulder injury against Washington State, senior Nate Costa stepped in and didn’t miss a beat. Meanwhile, no one seems to be able to stop RB LaMichael James, a burner who leads the nation with 169.6 rushing yards per game. Darron Thomas is healthy, he got nicked up at Wazzu, by why put him back in against the Cougars? Your sister’s friends could beat Washington State. After Barner was taken away in an ambulance, Thomas was banged up on one play; coaches said screw it- just put in Costa and let’s get out of dodge.

I’m ok with our defense. Sure were undersized, and yes we might give up some yards. Just go ahead, and try and smash mouth us into the grass and ‘run it up our gut.’ I dare you. Ask Stanford how that worked out for them. Before Stanford played us, go and read what Tony was saying how wonderful old school football they were playing and how they’d stack up nicely in the SEC… not just him, bloggers/college football pundits from Gainesville, to Orlando, to Colombia, to Atlanta.

At this point, you gotta give USCe their due. Coach Steve feels his fowl might actually finish this year without imploding and make the Dome. If so, good for them. There are only a handful of programs in the SEC that haven’t made the SECCG and his Chickens are one of them. Maybe this is their year, maybe it ain’t…4 teams to have never made the SECCG : Kentucky, Vandy, South Carolina and Ole Missy…As you can see, Florida (10), Tennessee (5) and Georgia (3) have dominated the East. If USCe makes it, it will seem weird…

*** NOT SO FAST *** I’m with you 110%….

Getting there is only the entry ticket to the dance. You still have to boogie when you get there and score more points than the other team.

Trust me, we were not in the parking lot tailgating in the third quarter when Oregon had the lead vs. Ohio State in the Rose Bowl, we knew that showing up in BCS games is where you really get judged. Yell at me as much as you’d like, but that loss I’m throwing almost entirely on Masoli. Show me one good throw he made in that game? (actually all year, he only had a few pretty long balls) Masoli’s inability to consistently hit open guys across the middle of the field 10+ yards and his inability to hit targets streaking down the sidelines and deep post rights, was Oregon’s downfall. Look at Ohio State’s offensive numbers, go check them out. Pryor beat us. Their RB’s averaged less than 3yds a carry on us, they didn’t gash us. Pryor’s athleticism was the difference and kudos to the kid. OSU stacked the box with 17 defenders, and Masoli never could hit open receivers. Therefore, they bottled up L James, Blount, and Kenyon Barner. Simple as that.
