Dawgs, Jackets win; Wisconsin upsets No. 1 Ohio State

The Fearless Friday Forecast:

1. Arkansas at Auburn: This game features the two hottest quarterbacks in the SEC in Ryan Mallett of Arkansas and Cameron Newton of Auburn. I’m giving the edge to Auburn at home and because the Tigers will be able to run the ball with Newton and Michael Dyer and limit Mallett’s posssessions.  Auburn will also play a little more defense with Nick Fairley up front. Auburn 27, Arkansas 21.

2. Vanderbilt at Georgia: The Bulldogs finally showed some signs of life last week in beating Tennessee 41-14 and should be able to take care of a Vanderbilt team  that is still having some issues on offense (11th in the SEC in scoring) when running back Warren Norman does not have a big game.  UGA VIII starts with a win. Georgia 28, Vanderbilt 10.

3. Middle Tennessee State at Georgia Tech: The Yellow Jackets take a break from conference action to play the Blue Raiders of Rick Stockstill. MTSU will be playing its second game with quarterback Dwight Dasher, who sat out the first four games of the season on suspension. Dasher is a good athlete but Tech rolls and starts getting ready for next week’s big trip to Clemson. Georgia Tech 31, MTSU 10.

4. South Carolina at Kentucky:  South Carolina’s upset of No. 1 Alabama last Saturday has the Gamecocks’ fans dreaming of their first-ever trip to the SEC championship game. But those same fans have seen their hopes dashed before when the Gamecocks have stumbled after a big win. If Kentucky RB Derrick Locke (shoulder) can’t go, that changes this game significantly. The Cats’ Randall Cobb is good, but South Carolina wins because of defense. South Carolina 24, Kentucky 20.

5. Ohio State at Wisconsin: Ohio State just moved to No. 1 but the Buckeyes have to play on Saturday night at Camp Randall Stadium, where the Badgers are 40-4 since 2004. Make that 41-4. Our Upset Special for this week:  Wisconsin 17, Ohio State 16.

6. Maryland at Clemson: After three straight losses to Auburn, Miami, and North Carolina, Clemson really needs a win against the 4-1 Terps. Maryland has won three of its last four meetings with the Tigers but Clemson gets it done at home. Clemson 24, Maryland 20.

7. Ole Miss at Alabama: Yes, I know. Ole Miss has had a week off and Alabama is coming of its first regular season loss since the 2007 season. Doesn’t matter. Alabama and Nick Saban are mad, refocused, and have to take it out on somebody. That somebody will be Houston Nutt and the Rebels. Alabama 31, Ole Miss 10.

8. Mississippi State at Florida: For only the second time since Urban Meyer became coach in 2005, Florida has lost two straight games. The Gators have never lost three in a row under Meyer. It will be an ugly game because Florida’s offense is, well, ugly. Mississippi State’s Dan Mullen, the former OC at Florida, will not have a pleasant Homecoming. Florida 21, Miss. State 10.

9. Texas at Nebraska: Some of the national spice got taken out of this game when the Longhorns dropped two straight games to UCLA and Oklahoma. But the folks at Nebraska have had this one circled on the calendar since last December then they lost a controversial Big 12 championship game to the Longhorns. This will be the last time these two teams will meet as members of the Big 12. Nebraska wants it to be a game to remember. Nebraska 23, Texas 14.

10. North Carolina at Virginia: The Tar Heels have had a season of distractions but they are still very much in the ACC Coastal race. The Tar Heels haven’t won in Charlottesville since 1981. That changes Saturday. North Carolina 27, Virginia 20.

Not much longer, JW…Saban’s got a 3-4 year “itch.” He’ll be gone in a few years, I’d bet.

Masoli,
Texas might beat Nebraska, but I don’t see any way UVA beats UNC.

Virginia stinks, and UNC is playing like a whole new team even with all of the guys out.

Since I didn’t actually attend Alabama, and I simply jump on the bandwagon for whomever is the best team in the state, I will now change my allegiance to Auburn. Guess I need to go get a new wrap, and a couple cinder blocks for my trailer, it’s leaning pretty bad today from the 18 cases of twinkies I just stole from the Flowers bakery store.

Yeah, Rambler. I’m sure Nick will be ready to up and start a new endeavor at 63-64 years old. He hates the NFL, there’s no better place in college football, and he’s entering the twilight of his career. The haters are just gonna have to deal with him.

I’m really not a hater, BAMA dude…just making an observation. Saban had an unbelievable situation at LSU, too, but he left.

Nah, I figured it was JW that stole the handle. He’s apparently not intelligent enough to make an argument without resorting to the childish. I apparently hurt his or her feelings by suggesting that Georgia Tech football was meaningless. Maybe that’s too strong a word, but the fact is that GT is not built to be a big time football school. They don’t have the stadium, facilities, and general college town atmosphere to recruit against UGA, Alabama, Florida, etc. Sure, they’ll get a kid or two here and there but they won’t have the depth. CPJ has a nice offense and seems to be a good leader but you don’t win big time football games without big time talent.

Which is closer to the definition of “arrogance?”

Someone who has an opinion on the outcome of a game based on observations of both teams
OR
Someone who concludes that his own football knowledge is obviously much greater than someone else’s based solely on that person’s allegiance to a certain school?

Don’t think too hard…

BAMA dude

You start out a conversation by saying another team plays ‘meaningless’ football and don’t expect to have any back lash? Was not my first question to you that if GT football is meaningless, then why is GT in your fight song irrespective of when the song was written? If GT football is meaningless, replace ‘Yellow Jackets’ with some other team that is not ‘meaningless’. You’ve yet to posit an argument that holds water as to why a ‘meaningless’ football team will still remain in your fight song.

An Alabama fan is going to even mention intelligence with a Tech Alum…good luck with that

Ok…well if what you said about GT football is true, then the same argument can be made about Alabama ‘academics’.

…therefore, Alabama has ‘meaningless’ diplomas

BAMA Dude,
I agree that we are not set up to be a football powerhouse in the current landscape…but we can steal some big wins here and there.

And we don’t necessarily need a ton of talent if our coaching is better than most other teams’.

You should know as well as anybody that having a great coach (Saban is the best in the country in my opinion) can beat better talent. I personally believe that last year Florida had better talent than Bama.

We definitely do need better talent than we currently have, but if the wins come, better players will come too. No, we will never get 5-star players up and down the board, but with solid classes with a 5 star occasionally and a mix of 4 star guys, we can compete with the big boys.

And don’t kid yourself about Tech being a “better school” than most any SEC school. Live in the south and want to be an engineer? Tech’s your place. Alabama happens to have one of the best law programs in the south. The Barn offers the vet school.

Besides, this is a football blog. I’m sure there are other boards to discuss Stephon Marbury’s and Derrick Favors’ academic achievements.

********** GO DUCKS!!! **********

Ok Tony, not sure about your Auburn vs. the Hogs pick. I know the game is at Auburns house, but I like the way Arkansas has moved the ball and I think they’ll be able to get an early lead and take Auburn away from their game plan in the second half. I’m taking Arkansas in this one. Also, look out Ole Miss. Alabama is an angry bunch and I think they’ll take Masoli and crew to the woodshed. Maybe Masoli will get back by stealing some crap in Tuscaloosa and taking it back to Oxford.

Texas will get whooped by Nebraska. Do you have any idea how much the entire state of Nebraska hates UT? Folks in Omaha and Lincoln hope Austin gets swallowed by Mexico; I’m serious. Spend any time in NB, and you’ll see how much they foam at the mouth with the thought of kicking Texas’ butt. The debacle in last year’s Big 12 title game is on everyone’s mind, and with the game being played at Memorial Stadium, that place will be rocking, and don’t expect that famous Husker Hospitality. Texas is showing up to a gun fight with a butter knife. Sorry Mac Brown, but it’s going to be a long Saturday in Lincoln.

Don’t sleep on Oregon State @ Washington. Is Jake Locker really that bad? Or is it, they just don’t have the surrounding cast of athletes and a competent offensive line that other quality QBs around the country have? I think it’s a combination of both, and he was a little hyped up too much pre-season. Oregon State and UDUB on ESPN Saturday night at Husky Stadium will be a good one.

Wisconsin hosting Ohio State will be a ESPN “Instant” Classic. I just see this game being slugged out until the last possession, and a turnover here or there, a special teams play, turning the table either way. You have to like the Badgers home record at Camp Randal, and how tough they are especially in night games. Pryor either cements himself with a Heisman moment or two, or he looks lackluster or handcuffed with conservative sweater-vest Tressel. IF Ohio State comes out throwing the ball like they did vs. Oregon in the Rose Bowl, Ohio State wins. IF they get all unadventurous than I like the Badgers in Madison.

[[ Ohio State loses, and Oregon wakes up Sunday morning as the #1 team in the land with Boise State, TCU, and Nebraska all close behind. ]]

Saban is great at developing talent, no doubt. That said, he wouldn’t be where he is without talent. Not so sure about Florida having better talent last year. Rolando McClain, Javier Arenas, Mount Cody, Kareem Jackson, Mike Johnson all went pretty early in the draft. Ingram, Richardson, Julio, Dareus, and Upshaw were all on that team too. I think a lot of people just didn’t know how good they were which worked to their benefit.

Little 11 sucks donkey sac

October 15th, 2010
11:20 am

I can’t wait to see Ohio St. “upset” this weekend. The most overhyped, overrated, overexposed conference in the nation is a total joke. I said last year that since the Little 11 FINALLY had a respectable showing in the bowls for a change, to watch the Little 11 homer media cream their pants and put 75% of the conference in the preseason polls. Well, I was nearly correct in my assumption. Even now at the halfway mark look at how many of their teams have already slide their way out of the top rankings. OSU is the biggest fraud in the nation that benefits, year after year, from a biased, midwestern loving media that will no matter what keep the Suckeyes around the top 5 year in and year out. If OSU had finished last year at 2-10 they would have still been a preseason top 5 team this year. It’s just a matter of time before they are exposed, as usual. No better reason for it to happen one week in to their undeserving top spot.

BCS is terrible.

October 15th, 2010
11:23 am

Hate to think local paper was biased towards local team. What a travesty!!

6 BCS conferences, each have to play a championship game, winners make into playoffs, possible 2 at-large bids for the Boise St.’s TCUs of the world. Take away the patsy OOC games and the month long break in December. Add a couple more off weekends to give the kids a break.

Bam!! You have a playoff system that works. Use the current BCS bowls to play the games in and add a couple extras for the semis and NC.

Why wouldn’t this week

BCS is terrible.

October 15th, 2010
11:24 am
