Dawgs, Jackets win; Wisconsin upsets No. 1 Ohio State

The Fearless Friday Forecast:

1. Arkansas at Auburn: This game features the two hottest quarterbacks in the SEC in Ryan Mallett of Arkansas and Cameron Newton of Auburn. I’m giving the edge to Auburn at home and because the Tigers will be able to run the ball with Newton and Michael Dyer and limit Mallett’s posssessions.  Auburn will also play a little more defense with Nick Fairley up front. Auburn 27, Arkansas 21.

2. Vanderbilt at Georgia: The Bulldogs finally showed some signs of life last week in beating Tennessee 41-14 and should be able to take care of a Vanderbilt team  that is still having some issues on offense (11th in the SEC in scoring) when running back Warren Norman does not have a big game.  UGA VIII starts with a win. Georgia 28, Vanderbilt 10.

3. Middle Tennessee State at Georgia Tech: The Yellow Jackets take a break from conference action to play the Blue Raiders of Rick Stockstill. MTSU will be playing its second game with quarterback Dwight Dasher, who sat out the first four games of the season on suspension. Dasher is a good athlete but Tech rolls and starts getting ready for next week’s big trip to Clemson. Georgia Tech 31, MTSU 10.

4. South Carolina at Kentucky:  South Carolina’s upset of No. 1 Alabama last Saturday has the Gamecocks’ fans dreaming of their first-ever trip to the SEC championship game. But those same fans have seen their hopes dashed before when the Gamecocks have stumbled after a big win. If Kentucky RB Derrick Locke (shoulder) can’t go, that changes this game significantly. The Cats’ Randall Cobb is good, but South Carolina wins because of defense. South Carolina 24, Kentucky 20.

5. Ohio State at Wisconsin: Ohio State just moved to No. 1 but the Buckeyes have to play on Saturday night at Camp Randall Stadium, where the Badgers are 40-4 since 2004. Make that 41-4. Our Upset Special for this week:  Wisconsin 17, Ohio State 16.

6. Maryland at Clemson: After three straight losses to Auburn, Miami, and North Carolina, Clemson really needs a win against the 4-1 Terps. Maryland has won three of its last four meetings with the Tigers but Clemson gets it done at home. Clemson 24, Maryland 20.

7. Ole Miss at Alabama: Yes, I know. Ole Miss has had a week off and Alabama is coming of its first regular season loss since the 2007 season. Doesn’t matter. Alabama and Nick Saban are mad, refocused, and have to take it out on somebody. That somebody will be Houston Nutt and the Rebels. Alabama 31, Ole Miss 10.

8. Mississippi State at Florida: For only the second time since Urban Meyer became coach in 2005, Florida has lost two straight games. The Gators have never lost three in a row under Meyer. It will be an ugly game because Florida’s offense is, well, ugly. Mississippi State’s Dan Mullen, the former OC at Florida, will not have a pleasant Homecoming. Florida 21, Miss. State 10.

9. Texas at Nebraska: Some of the national spice got taken out of this game when the Longhorns dropped two straight games to UCLA and Oklahoma. But the folks at Nebraska have had this one circled on the calendar since last December then they lost a controversial Big 12 championship game to the Longhorns. This will be the last time these two teams will meet as members of the Big 12. Nebraska wants it to be a game to remember. Nebraska 23, Texas 14.

10. North Carolina at Virginia: The Tar Heels have had a season of distractions but they are still very much in the ACC Coastal race. The Tar Heels haven’t won in Charlottesville since 1981. That changes Saturday. North Carolina 27, Virginia 20.

nature boy…

I’m a bama fan but there is alot of ball to be played although I hope you’re right last year was fun. The thing that ticks me off is conference championship games. I think it would make the BCS a little more easy to take if every conference had to play the second best team in their conference to have a chance to play in the natl championship.

Anyway go hogs over auburn, and tx over nebraska and wis over ohio st. That will make it more interesting for college football…

Gen Neyland,

Urban will be ok this year. The Gaytor fans down here have given up on the season already and talk is so have the players. I think Mullen gets his signature win this week. Vandy will give us fits this week-they always do!

Gary, go back and watch the game again. Cuff and Rambo forced the turnover that got things rolling. That’s football and yes they did get better. Quit trying to rationalize everything as the sky is falling when it’s not. Every team (including the great Alabama) will go through trying times at some point or another. This team’s happened to last a little longer than we’d like as Dawg fans.

I notice that all of the “experts” calling for a CFB playoff have already chosen their favorite team to play in the NC game, although we are only halfway through the regular season.

They don’t hate the BCS — they just hate not being BCS Champions.

Es todos los perdedores.

Nice 5IML. I do hear that Auburn’s two guards have great hands and the center has some great moves with the ball in his hands.

John,

I read on this post today that we only beat UT because of turnovers. Im sure it helped us-thats football. The most important thing for us is we took advantage of them and turned them into points.

To all the folks who think Texas will beat Nebraska… Are you crazy? The UT team who struggled against TTech and got smoked by OU and Cal?
This game will be reminiscent of the ending of Fargo with Nebraska feeding a Longhorn into the woodchipper.

Like the picks. I’m going with Wisconsin over Ohio St. as well. But I don’t think Auburn can hold Arkansas to 21 points, so I’m going with the Hogs, 31-27.

I’m not certain in any way that Texas will beat Nebraska, I just think it’s a good possibility. Nebraska has played a whole lot of nobody, and I mean NOBODY, save Kansas St. who beat UCF and ISU by one score each in Manhattan. Texas ain’t world beaters obviously and Nebraska has roughed up all their opponents thus far so we shall see. There is a lot of talent in Austin though.

Gary @ 8:21,

How many turnovers did GA have? None. Did you see the pass Murray threw for a TD–across his body to the far corner of the end zone–into a spot the size of the opening of a basketball goal?

The Dawgs ain’t losing to Vanderbilt.

Half of the currently undefeated CFB teams will not survive the month of October unscathed.

I consider that to be a relatively conservative estimate.

Wisconsin has some nice pieces on offense. They don’t have a snowballs chance even at home vs OSU.

They are the most overrated Big 10 team this year. Wisconsin will NOT beat Ohio State. Iowa might.

Is Ohio State football possibly the most overrated sports organization in all of sports? A strong case can be made that it is.

BAMA dude

Reasoned Opinion, I disagree. If Nebraska survives Texas they sail through to Dallas. Oregon losing would be a minor miracle based on their schedule the rest of the way and at least one if not both of tOSU and Mich St. will run the table I think. Weird dynamic in college football where most of the conferences are very top heavy. Ironically, it’s usually the SEC that takes criticism for that. Turns out that the SEC might be the most balanced of all this season with several good quality teams.

I hope we can pull it out, but don’t forget how the Hogs hung 40 on us last year and their defense is 100% better than last year, actually I think they are ranked 3rd overall in the conference. Their only loss is a 4 point loss to the then #1 team in the country in a game that they should have won. Again, I hope we can win but I really think we are still 1yr away from being able to really contend.
