Dawgs, Jackets win; Wisconsin upsets No. 1 Ohio State

The Fearless Friday Forecast:

1. Arkansas at Auburn: This game features the two hottest quarterbacks in the SEC in Ryan Mallett of Arkansas and Cameron Newton of Auburn. I’m giving the edge to Auburn at home and because the Tigers will be able to run the ball with Newton and Michael Dyer and limit Mallett’s posssessions.  Auburn will also play a little more defense with Nick Fairley up front. Auburn 27, Arkansas 21.

2. Vanderbilt at Georgia: The Bulldogs finally showed some signs of life last week in beating Tennessee 41-14 and should be able to take care of a Vanderbilt team  that is still having some issues on offense (11th in the SEC in scoring) when running back Warren Norman does not have a big game.  UGA VIII starts with a win. Georgia 28, Vanderbilt 10.

3. Middle Tennessee State at Georgia Tech: The Yellow Jackets take a break from conference action to play the Blue Raiders of Rick Stockstill. MTSU will be playing its second game with quarterback Dwight Dasher, who sat out the first four games of the season on suspension. Dasher is a good athlete but Tech rolls and starts getting ready for next week’s big trip to Clemson. Georgia Tech 31, MTSU 10.

4. South Carolina at Kentucky:  South Carolina’s upset of No. 1 Alabama last Saturday has the Gamecocks’ fans dreaming of their first-ever trip to the SEC championship game. But those same fans have seen their hopes dashed before when the Gamecocks have stumbled after a big win. If Kentucky RB Derrick Locke (shoulder) can’t go, that changes this game significantly. The Cats’ Randall Cobb is good, but South Carolina wins because of defense. South Carolina 24, Kentucky 20.

5. Ohio State at Wisconsin: Ohio State just moved to No. 1 but the Buckeyes have to play on Saturday night at Camp Randall Stadium, where the Badgers are 40-4 since 2004. Make that 41-4. Our Upset Special for this week:  Wisconsin 17, Ohio State 16.

6. Maryland at Clemson: After three straight losses to Auburn, Miami, and North Carolina, Clemson really needs a win against the 4-1 Terps. Maryland has won three of its last four meetings with the Tigers but Clemson gets it done at home. Clemson 24, Maryland 20.

7. Ole Miss at Alabama: Yes, I know. Ole Miss has had a week off and Alabama is coming of its first regular season loss since the 2007 season. Doesn’t matter. Alabama and Nick Saban are mad, refocused, and have to take it out on somebody. That somebody will be Houston Nutt and the Rebels. Alabama 31, Ole Miss 10.

8. Mississippi State at Florida: For only the second time since Urban Meyer became coach in 2005, Florida has lost two straight games. The Gators have never lost three in a row under Meyer. It will be an ugly game because Florida’s offense is, well, ugly. Mississippi State’s Dan Mullen, the former OC at Florida, will not have a pleasant Homecoming. Florida 21, Miss. State 10.

9. Texas at Nebraska: Some of the national spice got taken out of this game when the Longhorns dropped two straight games to UCLA and Oklahoma. But the folks at Nebraska have had this one circled on the calendar since last December then they lost a controversial Big 12 championship game to the Longhorns. This will be the last time these two teams will meet as members of the Big 12. Nebraska wants it to be a game to remember. Nebraska 23, Texas 14.

10. North Carolina at Virginia: The Tar Heels have had a season of distractions but they are still very much in the ACC Coastal race. The Tar Heels haven’t won in Charlottesville since 1981. That changes Saturday. North Carolina 27, Virginia 20.

JW, your assumptions are silly. I’m not angry at all…just using as much emphasis as I can in the admittedly stupid act of “wrestling with the pigs” as they say. I’ll admit picking on the U(sic)GA student may have been a little much. But do I hate the stereotyping of Tech? Yes. Do I love to take the bait and correct it? Unfortunately, yes. Sorry if I’m not chill enough for you…

By the way, I study on campus at Tech on Mon, Wed, and Fri doing Senior Design. You wanna have a chat about my qualifications then come on down to the Industrial Design studio. Just turned in my degree petition today, actually! Or better yet, find me at the game tomorrow. My fraternity block is directly behind the band.

Roy Barns you can’t create +200k jobs for Georgia and not make Georgia a Joke Unless you make jobs for people to be UGA Football players personal Probation officers. To stpp the country stop thinking Georgia is a laughing stock, then we to stop electing UGA GRADS to office.

The rids have been moved to the top rack and the Pecan tree wood has been added. I think I can go to sleep in about 45 min. and let the SMOKINg finish. The Pecan smoking on top of the Maple Glaze is going to be so good.

brokeback, have you ever heard of academic rankings? No? Try any of the popular publications or just look on all the in-state business schools’ websites. You’ll find Tech’s management degree (yes, that’s its official title…no quotes needed) is indeed on a brisk climb the last few years. Best public program in the state now according to the rankings. It’s not a personal cut, just a calrification I was trying to make.

And as far as GSU football goes…come play us in our “empty” (40k+ avg is still way more than your ~15k) little stadium and see if you like the outcome. You’ve got to be a Georgia fan…the Staters I know don’t crow against Tech this much…we’ve done nothing to make them hate us like that. But seriously, yall don’t even have your first winning season secured yet (in 1-AA ball) and you’re gonna beat your chest that way to ANY BCS team?!! I don’t care if it’s Washington State…y’aint there yet.

This must be what FSU or Miami fans felt like listening to USF fans when the bulls started up…

Why do folks pick on Tech fans on this blog? Could it be due to the fact that the bug fans have been so obnoxious since GT hired Chan Gailey? All that we heard on these blogs was how Tech was “back” in the CFB hunt. Then you guys fired Chan and hired some guy who still thinks that he can compete in upper echelon CFB with a tired old offensive scheme that ran it’s course in the 1970’s. Once again, you trumpeted your “return to glory”.

I know that Georgia Tech was once a true powerhouse in CFB, but that was a long, long time ago. The same could be said of Vandy, or even Suwanee, for that matter. There is no shame in choosing to deemphasize your athletics program. Just don’t come here bragging about being back in the top tier of CFB until you’ve done something to prove it. And no, winning the ACC Championship doesn’t qualify as “proving it”.

Here’s the other thing that annoys CFB fans. When you are faced with the fact that you haven’t actually returned to dominance — even in your home state, much less the nation; don’t try to change the subject by bragging about your academic excellence. Nobody cares. This is a football blog.

When you guys accomplish something noteworthy in football, then I’ll be the first to congratulate you for your success. Until then, you should refrain from complaining about the football programs that actually are successful. It only makes you appear small-minded and petty.

In closing, I would like to wish you the best of luck in your upcoming contest with Middle Tennessee State University. I like Tech to win this one.

Been to Wisconsin’s campus in Madison, and it’s a really good campus. However, I’d just as soon seen OSU go down because of ESPN’s shameless promotion of their QB for Heisman. Amazingly, it all came about because he had one very good game in the Rose Bowl last year, must have been a career game. Personally, I would like to see the Heisman board select a player that carries a team on his back for a season, rather than one that benefits having superior talent around them.

October 16th, 2010

Kinda like Josh Nesbit….. He carries his team, the team is very average at best, but that is what the Heisman was all about…….. We have these ESPN blowhards who make it a popularity contest, with the biggest media usually tipping the scales…

Damon Evans:

Your argument is so last year and had been turned inside out multiple times, but for your weak minded self we will just hit a couple of points.

The SEC put up to 10 teams in some years in Bowl Games while every other Conference places 6 to 7. Therefore many 10 and 9 are playing others 5, 6, and 7s.

BUT HERE IS THE REAL NUMBER….IN TITLE GAMES WHAT IS THE NUMBER? Everytime it mattered the SEC wins in the big BCS Championship game.

In the next few years, tech will have its hands full with local football rivalries with Kennessaw State, SCAD Atlanta, and Georgia Gwinnett College. If tech is lucky, maybe the Agnes Scott Scotties will schedule the tech honey bees for homecoming, and all the tech virgins will finally see real, live women. Things are looking up at tech. Well, except football attendance, but no surprise there.

Auburn has that disease that LSU has, close with anybody they play. I think in Auburn’s part it is the protection of their quarterback. Once they win a game they put Newton into less punishing play calling. In LSU’s I think they have some of Georgia’s celebrate before the gun goes off mentality but the talent to back it up.

I think Vandy will do much better with Ga. than Tony thinks. First Georgai proved nothing last week against the weakest team in the SEC and Vandy is better than at least Mississippi, which is not much worse than Georgia if at all.

South Carolina is quarantined for excessive celebration this week against a much better team than its record in Kentucky. If they lose one this may be it, but Spurrier is the best coach in the SEC maybe the best they ever had. Tony watch and learn on this one, how great coaches bring it every week which not even your Bama boys can do. Bama has the best team in the SEC, South Carolina has the best coach.

It’s kind of sad to see all the Dawg fans getting so excited this year (just like the year before, the year before that, etc.). How long is it going to take for UGA fans to realize that UGA is simply no longer relevant in the SEC? In the national picture, UGA isn’t even a blip on the radar, and hasn’t been since the preseason #1 ranking two years ago.

Sit back and be grateful for the seven or eight wins you’ll get every year. Coaching genius Mark Richt may take you to 8-4 or even 9-3 occasionally, but Florida will still win the SEC, meaning no BCS bowls and no top 10 final ranking. Most years, UGA will be very lucky to finish in the top 25, and only after a big bowl win over a nobody opponent.

It’s a different world now, and Dawg fans need to adjust their expectations downward to reflect reality.

Unfortunately nothing is going to change until UGA changes its mediocre coaching. That’s where the difference is, and that’s why everyone outside Dawgtard Nation just laughs at Dawg fans getting so excited year after year about what a great recruiting class UGA gets. It doesn’t matter how many blue chip high school players go to UGA, they simply don’t get the coaching they would get at Florida or Alabama, to name two schools whose programs are far ahead of UGA. And that’s not going to change as long as Mark Richt is in Athens.

Get your heads out of the sand and face reality. And mediocrity and irrelevance.

Newton was 80% of Auburn’s offense. He will not get those easy runs next week and with LSU’s shut down corners ..expect 7 men in the box and dare Cam to try and throw it.

First let me say that our offense stinks. Now the chance of UGA beating us at the party really is a possibility. The coach isn’t preparing our guys like in the past, as the size and speed hasn’t changed, but the execution has gone way down.

LSU puts 8 men in box, Newton goes over top. Folks, all he is doing is taking what the opposing defense is giving him. The kid can and has thrown the football well. Go check his stats at http://www.sec.com and compare to other sec qb’s, you”ll be very surprised at how good the numbers are. He isn’t just some dog and pony show. Amazingly he really isnt getting hit that hard.
