Dawgs, Jackets win; Wisconsin upsets No. 1 Ohio State

The Fearless Friday Forecast:

1. Arkansas at Auburn: This game features the two hottest quarterbacks in the SEC in Ryan Mallett of Arkansas and Cameron Newton of Auburn. I’m giving the edge to Auburn at home and because the Tigers will be able to run the ball with Newton and Michael Dyer and limit Mallett’s posssessions.  Auburn will also play a little more defense with Nick Fairley up front. Auburn 27, Arkansas 21.

2. Vanderbilt at Georgia: The Bulldogs finally showed some signs of life last week in beating Tennessee 41-14 and should be able to take care of a Vanderbilt team  that is still having some issues on offense (11th in the SEC in scoring) when running back Warren Norman does not have a big game.  UGA VIII starts with a win. Georgia 28, Vanderbilt 10.

3. Middle Tennessee State at Georgia Tech: The Yellow Jackets take a break from conference action to play the Blue Raiders of Rick Stockstill. MTSU will be playing its second game with quarterback Dwight Dasher, who sat out the first four games of the season on suspension. Dasher is a good athlete but Tech rolls and starts getting ready for next week’s big trip to Clemson. Georgia Tech 31, MTSU 10.

4. South Carolina at Kentucky:  South Carolina’s upset of No. 1 Alabama last Saturday has the Gamecocks’ fans dreaming of their first-ever trip to the SEC championship game. But those same fans have seen their hopes dashed before when the Gamecocks have stumbled after a big win. If Kentucky RB Derrick Locke (shoulder) can’t go, that changes this game significantly. The Cats’ Randall Cobb is good, but South Carolina wins because of defense. South Carolina 24, Kentucky 20.

5. Ohio State at Wisconsin: Ohio State just moved to No. 1 but the Buckeyes have to play on Saturday night at Camp Randall Stadium, where the Badgers are 40-4 since 2004. Make that 41-4. Our Upset Special for this week:  Wisconsin 17, Ohio State 16.

6. Maryland at Clemson: After three straight losses to Auburn, Miami, and North Carolina, Clemson really needs a win against the 4-1 Terps. Maryland has won three of its last four meetings with the Tigers but Clemson gets it done at home. Clemson 24, Maryland 20.

7. Ole Miss at Alabama: Yes, I know. Ole Miss has had a week off and Alabama is coming of its first regular season loss since the 2007 season. Doesn’t matter. Alabama and Nick Saban are mad, refocused, and have to take it out on somebody. That somebody will be Houston Nutt and the Rebels. Alabama 31, Ole Miss 10.

8. Mississippi State at Florida: For only the second time since Urban Meyer became coach in 2005, Florida has lost two straight games. The Gators have never lost three in a row under Meyer. It will be an ugly game because Florida’s offense is, well, ugly. Mississippi State’s Dan Mullen, the former OC at Florida, will not have a pleasant Homecoming. Florida 21, Miss. State 10.

9. Texas at Nebraska: Some of the national spice got taken out of this game when the Longhorns dropped two straight games to UCLA and Oklahoma. But the folks at Nebraska have had this one circled on the calendar since last December then they lost a controversial Big 12 championship game to the Longhorns. This will be the last time these two teams will meet as members of the Big 12. Nebraska wants it to be a game to remember. Nebraska 23, Texas 14.

10. North Carolina at Virginia: The Tar Heels have had a season of distractions but they are still very much in the ACC Coastal race. The Tar Heels haven’t won in Charlottesville since 1981. That changes Saturday. North Carolina 27, Virginia 20.

I’m anxious to see how Bama responds against Ole Miss. The Aub-Ark game should be a good one and the Ky-SC might be the best of them all.

FYI

Tech’s NC team of 1917, led by David “Red” Baron was one of the best teams of the pre-war era.

Duck man, they have given up more yards that 63 teams. They gave up 31 points to Arizona f’n State. OSU and UW gave up less points to those clowns. Northern Arizona only gave ‘em 41!

No defense played out west. None at all.

BAMA dude

An alabama fan is going to tell a fan of another team what those fans expect….ok you’re idiot and you proved it with your last comment. Completely ignoring the precedent for having expectations and the fact that only Bama is the only SEC team with more National Championships than GT

Again why are you so concerned with GT football? GT and bama rarely play and the last time they did GT won.

What is your obsession? Is it the hangover from having USCe beating you? Is it the fact that for the majority of the 2000’s alabama has been playing .500 or below ball and has not been remotely relevant until 2008?

How do schools like Kentucky, Bama, & UNC play games without triple digit numbers for the players? Those schools have so many retired numbers no players should beable to have a # anymore?

I’m glad we all agree that Tech will never be great. Becuase that’s what Tech folks expect, right? 7-5 seasons in D-1 ball is about as good as you can expect from a medium-sized university so academically one-dimensional and focused on research and academic rankings using sports only as advertising, right?

OH WAIT! I seem to remember a certain lying Athletics Director saying something to that effect to GT alumni and then getting canned in favor of a guy with SEC ties who has since begun our long, difficult road to recovery in almost all sports (some sports, thank God, did not fall to D-3 levels). This, of course, is magically coinciding with the rise of our liberal arts, business, economics and “soft sciences” programs (the undergrad and graduate Management degrees from Tech are now outranking UGA’s Terry College and are catching up with those from Emory)and a planned growth of campus and total enrollment (Tech is now over 20k students body.)

So…that old “little academic school” pigeon hole is getting quite cramped. Soon enough it’ll be too tight to stay in.

(before I get flamed, understand that I never made any prognostication of any of the sports teams…only that 7-5 football seasons in the admittedly droopy ACC is not and NEVER WAS good enough)

Some interesting comments on these boards
Thomas not on the same planet as AJ as a receiver? He was only the first WR taken in the 2010 NFL draft.
Oregon plays in a weak league? The PAC 10 is the highest rated league in the Sagarin ratings.

“ncaa.com says differently”

They actually don’t say differently. You have to download their 2010 FBS Record Book to get the full story. It has a full listing of all football polls and selectors. They do not recognize any poll or mathematically-based championships, including the BCS.

The NCAA does recognize national championships in Div. II and III since 1973, when playoffs began in those divisions.

PAC 10 is lower than the:

SEC
BIG 12
BIG 10
and pretty much in line with the ACC …

Strength of schedule – Games through 10/9/2010

Wash. St. – 4
San Jose St. 5
Arizona St. – 6

“The SCHEDULE ratings represent what the rating would have to be for a
hypothetical team to have a mathematical expectation of winning precisely 50%
of their games against the schedule played by the team in question in the games
that it has played so far. The schedule difficulty of each given game takes
into account the rating of the opponent and the location of the game. This
is the same concept that is used in computing the WIN50% conference ratings.”

Ala 28-21 over UM…Closer than people think…hangover for UA, and incentive for UM
MSU 28-21 over UF…..Upset special as UF downward spiral continues.

Auburn may beat Arkansas….it’ll be a tough game between two good teams that are a little overrated. However, Auburn will NEVER EVER win a game because of defense as long as Teddie GOOF is their DC. He’s been horrible wherever he’s been. A solid recruiter and good LB coach, but as DC he’s way over his head.

Tech wins big.
Vandy puts up a fight against Clarke County Penal Team, unlike Doodley Jr’s boys, and cover.
Slow, fat Wisconsin can’t stop Pryor and Ohio State.
Chickens better watch out and not come out flat in Lex. UK can score.
Nebraska drops the hammer on Texas. I mean big time.
