The Fearless Friday Forecast: Bama, Dawgs, and Jackets win

The Fearless Friday Forecast as we reach the midway point of the 2010 season (Man, that was fast!)

1. Alabama at South Carolina: South Carolina has never beaten the No. 1 team in the nation. ESPN’s College Game Day will be there. The game will be nationally televised on CBS. It’s certainly the biggest game in Steve Spurrier’s six years in Columbia. Some games are tough to break down. This one is not.  If South Carolina can slow down the running game just a little bit, the Gamecocks have a chance to put some pressure on Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy.  If McElroy, who had two interceptions against Arkansas, has an off day the Gamecocks have a shot.  There is a reason McElroy is undefeated as a starting quarterback. He knows how to win these kinds of games. Alabama 24, South Carolina 10.

2. Tennessee at Georgia: Let’s dub this one the “Desperation Bowl.” Both teams really need a win after very tough losses last week. I’m not sure how Georgia’s team is going to respond–if they respond at all–after four straight losses. I’m not sure if Tennessee is completely over last week’s crazy loss to LSU. Georgia gets the edge at home and wins with a Blair Walsh field goal at the buzzer. Georgia 17, Tennessee 14.

3. Virginia at Georgia Tech: Georgia Tech is very much a work in progress and will need to tighten up in several areas in order to beat the Cavaliers. The Yellow Jackets have to get pressure on Virginia quarterback Mark Verica and make him uncomfortable. They will. Georgia Tech 24, Virginia 14.

4. LSU at Florida: The Les Miles Traveling High Wire and Mass Confusion Show makes an appearance at The Swamp, where the Gators are still smarting from a beat down at Alabama last week. This is going to be a very ugly football game because neither team really has a coherent offense.  Florida is average. LSU is awful. LSU will be in this game all the way because the Tiger defense is so good. It will be a low scoring game because both coaches know their offense can lose the game and will thus be very conservative. Florida wins the game when LSU mismanages the clock and fails to kick a potential winning field goal. Florida 14 LSU 13.

5. Auburn at Kentucky: After a quality scrimmage last week against Louisiana-Monroe, Auburn starts a string of four straight SEC games against Kentucky, Arkansas, LSU, and Ole Miss. The Tigers have a rising star in quarterback Cameron Newton, the nation’s No. 2 most efficient passer. But it is the Auburn defense that is really exceeding expectations and will force three Kentucky turnovers. Auburn 35, Kentucky 24.

6. Florida State at Miami: It comes down to quarterback play. Jacory Harris of Miami makes big plays but he tends to throw interceptions. He has eight in only 119 passing attempts. Florida State’s Christian Ponder has only three interceptions in 129 attempts. It is tempting to go with Florida State because the Seminoles lead the nation with 25 quarterback sacks. But I just like Miami at home. Miami 24, Florida State 20.

7.  Clemson at North Carolina: Both teams have lost a conference game and so both need a win in order to stay competitive in their respective divisions. I just think that with all of the issues going on at North Carolina (five defensive starters are still out due to various investigations) the Tar Heels don’t have enough steam to beat a pretty good team like Clemson. Clemson 27, North Carolina 21.

8. Michigan State at Michigan:  Coach Mark Dantonio had a mild heart attack after Michigan State’s win over Notre Dame on Sept. 25 and was in a hospital bed for last week’s big win over Wisconsin. He returns and will coach in the press box at Michigan, who has the Heisman Trophy frontrunner in quarterback Denard Robinson. Robinson has been unstoppable this season and is just 95 yards away from the 1,000-yard mark. This will be a shootout because the Wolverines can’t stop anybody. Michigan 38, Michigan State 35.

9. Texas A&M vs. Arkansas (Arlington, Tex.): This will be a battle of two very good quarterbacks. Ryan Mallett of Arkansas is second in the nation, averaging 359.5 yards passing per game. Texas A&M’s Jerrod Johnson has a gun for an arm but tends to throw a lot of interceptions.  He threw 62 passes in last week’s loss at Oklahoma State but had an interception to set up the winning field goal for the Cowboys. There will be at least 90 passes thrown in this game and the number could be closer to 100. The winner will be the team that can get a couple of defensive stops. That would be Arkansas.  Arkansas 42, Texas A&M 37.

10. Southern California at Stanford: USC (4-1) can’t win the Pac-10 because of NCAA probation but the Trojans can have someting to say about who does. USC  got beat at the buzzer last week by Washington and now has an opportunity to hand Stanford (4-1) it’s second Pac-10 loss of the season. The Cardinal had a 21-3 lead on Oregon last week and got beat 52-31. I just like Jim Harbaugh’s Stanford team to be tougher than the Boy Wonder who’s coaching the Trojans. Stanford 31, USC 24.

Tony you are like a broken record (Dawgs win a late Blair Walsh FG – where did I last hear that)?

And do you really think Les Miles will mismanage the clock late in two consecutive games, this time to lose? If he does, he will be fired at the end of the season, if not sooner. No way Jose!

Any truth to the rumor that Ealey and King were arrested on drug trafficking charges?

Lots of rumors around today for sure. CMR better hope not; no way he survives that one.

Gen Neyland, Okay I will try. Jakar “The Hitman” Hamilton will hit Da’Rick so hard that he will knock the apostrophe out of his name!

Gen Neyland, really. It is hilarious and historic. This is the first time since 1906 that neither team can actually talk smack to each other. Battling for the basement is no fun.

Tony the only predictable thing this weekend is you. You pick against South Carolina and for Georgia. South Carolina has never beaten a number one team but Steve Spurrier has and Tony kind of knows that. Playing in Columbia. Alabama is as good as they have ever been in this time of parity, but parity is the key. And with that parity little things like coaching and home court advantage make a difference. I totally miss the boat last week and my boy TB was right on all ACC picks, but Tony is not in love with ACC teams and sees clearer than I do on the subject. The blind spots are Georgia and Steve Spurrier.

On Georgia you don’t think Vince has schooled his boy on how to beat Georgia? And you don’t think Vince knows what they need to do to beat Ga? Tennessee will beat Ga., they will get over the LSU game because it is Ga, very fast. I do believe Fla. beats LSU but that is any body’s guess on who is really playing that day.

Get ready for boooos from the faithful between the hedges as UGA finds another way to lose, probably an undiciplined-style celbration penalty after scoring the second to last TD/FG of the game…CMR or Bobo pls call some dynamic plays when we have the ball, there’s a zillion plays out there, why do we call the same 10 plays all year long? Want to save your job Richt? Why don’t you try giving a player a hi five or smiling or showing some friging excitement on good plays, 3rd down, 3 and outs, opponents turnovers, long feildgoals, great catches, long runs, anyting……instead of worrying about your butt-cut blowing in the wind. Or physically kick the next guy to fumble squarly in the arse as he comes off the field, what do oyu have to lose…give us something pls.

Hey interception idiot,

Despite being a fan and alumni of UGA which currently has a 1-4 record, I guarantee you I’m enjoying myself and my lif more than you. You, the 400 pound donut eating moron who sits around all day waiting on something bad to happen while I continue to support my school.

I’ll be at a charity softball tourney Saturday until late, then turn around Sunday morning and head to Turner Field for the Braves. Hope to see the replay of our game tomorrow night…I see UGA going to it’s quick strike O and Tennessee playing grind out O, which will use up the UGA D by the 4th and allow UT a one point victory…Good luck to yours, gdawginkalamazoo…and better luck to mine…

I think you’re spot-on about Bama winning, but you have mis-diagnosed the reason why SCarolina loses. It won’t be because of Bama’s qb knowing how to win, but because SC’s HBC doesn’t have the patience to win with the running game. He’ll want to throw it 76 times as if he were still qb at Fla, instead of relying on a solid RB and offensive line to win it on the ground.

College football is out of control

October 8th, 2010
6:23 pm

Many years ago colleges and universities indexed the salaries of their football coaches to the highest paid faculty member. If we did this with the bible thumping Richt he would have to give over two million dollars back to the university where it could be spent on academics which believe it or not is why we have universities. (And given his performance lately who could argue otherwise?)

If the yahoos who spend half their lives following this dumb sport cared about education a fraction as much the South would be much better off instead of having the worst schools from top to bottom (excepting my school of Emory and also Vanderbilt.)

How many of you are attending the next tea party rally or listening to Beck’s “history lessons.” Something makes me think that there is considerable overlap.

Alabama beats South Carolina 27 – 10.

Dawgs beat the Vols 17-10

LSU beats Florida – LSU has a better defense than Florida does and I think LSU using both QB’s will give Florida problems.17-14.

Florida St and Miami – I’m pulling for the noles in this game but I think Miami will win though.

Nebraska QB Taylor Martinez is now among the leaders for the Heisman after last night’s game (according to the New York Times). How can that be? He’s only a 6-1 true freshman and a 3-Star Scout and Rivals recruit. It has to be a conspiracy. Those recruiting “services” are now desperately trying to cover their tracks.

Tide2u2c – I think LSU using both QB’s will continue to give the Tigers problems. Les will probably have them assume a sprinter’s 4-point stance on the sideline, ready at the snap of his fingers. Every tenth of a second counts.

Using 2 QB’s most of the time is a bad idea but in this case it can be a good thing.I know pick 6 Lee was bad at throwing interceptions last year but he’s had a year more in the system and is more experianced that Florida’s QB.Plus Les is one lucky person. 4 leaf clover in his pocket?

I also think LSU will beat Florida because I don’t think Florida has gotten over how bad they were beaten by Alabama. It seems teams like Florida that lose to Bama do a tail spin afterward. Will Meyer be run out of town like Fulmer and Tubb’s was?He almost quit last year.Trend?

If Georgia Loses Today…the following will happen…bank it:

Booing will be very loud in the Stadium
The Recruiting Class will be minus several key signees in February
Mark Richt will resign or iniate his departure buyout.
The laughter you will be hearing is from every other school in the SEC.
These blogs will BLOW UP!

Florida will be in for a rude awakening today, as bad as LSU is on offense, they are that good on defense. Florida will need to change their entire way of running their offense. Steve Addazio is not the answer to the Post Mullen experiment. Since Mullen left this offense is predictable.

Al Groh wants to embarrass Virginia for his dismissal, and GT needs to show they can play offense and defense for 60 minutes.

Florida State needs to make a statement against Miami, if they do not, this will get ugly. FSU can beat Miami if they learn to be more discipline on defense and stop taking so many chances. The winner of this game is the team with the fewest penalties.

Michigan St. needs Dantoni o on that wall, you want him on that wall, and Michigan may be exposed today as one dimensional and lacking any defense, The best defense wins today.

Alabama had a hard time last year in Tuscaloosa with USC, but this running back took over the game and it started his Heisman run. This years version of the Crimson Tide is much better on offense, but playing in Columbia is always tough. Alabama wins in a very very close game.

Today Today Today…the day many answers will be revealed about UGA, and many other teams…how does Auburn perform on a rare Road Game in the SEC? A loss in Lexington will make the next three games alot tougher for the Tigers…..

A Georgia loss today will not be as dramatic as you believe. Anyone who hasn’t already figured out just how bad this Goergia team is has no business posting on a football blog.

LSU is good on defense — they aren’t great. Hat trick fails today.

Al who?

FSU vs Miami = Who Cares?

“Michigan may be exposed today as one dimensional and lacking any defense” Duh??? How many times will that be “exposed” this year? This certainly won’t be the first exposure.

“Alabama had a hard time last year in Tuscaloosa with USC” A 20-6 victory now qualifies as a “hard time”? Interesting.

Auburn’s upcoming games are tough enough, regardless of how they fare against the mildcats. Today’s game means little more than nothing — Kentucky has already been exposed as a less than mediocre football program. That shouldn’t make much news in the SEC.

not so fast my friend…..

If UGA loses today…it will be worse and the Money folks around Athens will be FORCED to pull the plug as of today he gets one more year…..get a clue….

I take it you did not watch the Alabama /USC game last year…it was 14-6 going into the 4 th quarter with USC having the ball in Alabama territory before Mark Ingram took over in the Wildcat formation…once again you are clueless…. USC had an off week and this the 3rd in a row top 20 game for Alabama…

Michigan has had a cake walk and had to go the extra mile last week to win and still gave up 30…this MSU team is better and if they slow down the outside threat it will be a long day for RichRod. once again you are clueless…

Kentucky beat Auburn last year didn’t they? In Auburn?….anyone on the road in the SEC is capable of losing….and after two hard losses on the road…Kentucky competes in this one.
