The Fearless Friday Forecast: Bama, Dawgs, and Jackets win

The Fearless Friday Forecast as we reach the midway point of the 2010 season (Man, that was fast!)

1. Alabama at South Carolina: South Carolina has never beaten the No. 1 team in the nation. ESPN’s College Game Day will be there. The game will be nationally televised on CBS. It’s certainly the biggest game in Steve Spurrier’s six years in Columbia. Some games are tough to break down. This one is not.  If South Carolina can slow down the running game just a little bit, the Gamecocks have a chance to put some pressure on Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy.  If McElroy, who had two interceptions against Arkansas, has an off day the Gamecocks have a shot.  There is a reason McElroy is undefeated as a starting quarterback. He knows how to win these kinds of games. Alabama 24, South Carolina 10.

2. Tennessee at Georgia: Let’s dub this one the “Desperation Bowl.” Both teams really need a win after very tough losses last week. I’m not sure how Georgia’s team is going to respond–if they respond at all–after four straight losses. I’m not sure if Tennessee is completely over last week’s crazy loss to LSU. Georgia gets the edge at home and wins with a Blair Walsh field goal at the buzzer. Georgia 17, Tennessee 14.

3. Virginia at Georgia Tech: Georgia Tech is very much a work in progress and will need to tighten up in several areas in order to beat the Cavaliers. The Yellow Jackets have to get pressure on Virginia quarterback Mark Verica and make him uncomfortable. They will. Georgia Tech 24, Virginia 14.

4. LSU at Florida: The Les Miles Traveling High Wire and Mass Confusion Show makes an appearance at The Swamp, where the Gators are still smarting from a beat down at Alabama last week. This is going to be a very ugly football game because neither team really has a coherent offense.  Florida is average. LSU is awful. LSU will be in this game all the way because the Tiger defense is so good. It will be a low scoring game because both coaches know their offense can lose the game and will thus be very conservative. Florida wins the game when LSU mismanages the clock and fails to kick a potential winning field goal. Florida 14 LSU 13.

5. Auburn at Kentucky: After a quality scrimmage last week against Louisiana-Monroe, Auburn starts a string of four straight SEC games against Kentucky, Arkansas, LSU, and Ole Miss. The Tigers have a rising star in quarterback Cameron Newton, the nation’s No. 2 most efficient passer. But it is the Auburn defense that is really exceeding expectations and will force three Kentucky turnovers. Auburn 35, Kentucky 24.

6. Florida State at Miami: It comes down to quarterback play. Jacory Harris of Miami makes big plays but he tends to throw interceptions. He has eight in only 119 passing attempts. Florida State’s Christian Ponder has only three interceptions in 129 attempts. It is tempting to go with Florida State because the Seminoles lead the nation with 25 quarterback sacks. But I just like Miami at home. Miami 24, Florida State 20.

7.  Clemson at North Carolina: Both teams have lost a conference game and so both need a win in order to stay competitive in their respective divisions. I just think that with all of the issues going on at North Carolina (five defensive starters are still out due to various investigations) the Tar Heels don’t have enough steam to beat a pretty good team like Clemson. Clemson 27, North Carolina 21.

8. Michigan State at Michigan:  Coach Mark Dantonio had a mild heart attack after Michigan State’s win over Notre Dame on Sept. 25 and was in a hospital bed for last week’s big win over Wisconsin. He returns and will coach in the press box at Michigan, who has the Heisman Trophy frontrunner in quarterback Denard Robinson. Robinson has been unstoppable this season and is just 95 yards away from the 1,000-yard mark. This will be a shootout because the Wolverines can’t stop anybody. Michigan 38, Michigan State 35.

9. Texas A&M vs. Arkansas (Arlington, Tex.): This will be a battle of two very good quarterbacks. Ryan Mallett of Arkansas is second in the nation, averaging 359.5 yards passing per game. Texas A&M’s Jerrod Johnson has a gun for an arm but tends to throw a lot of interceptions.  He threw 62 passes in last week’s loss at Oklahoma State but had an interception to set up the winning field goal for the Cowboys. There will be at least 90 passes thrown in this game and the number could be closer to 100. The winner will be the team that can get a couple of defensive stops. That would be Arkansas.  Arkansas 42, Texas A&M 37.

10. Southern California at Stanford: USC (4-1) can’t win the Pac-10 because of NCAA probation but the Trojans can have someting to say about who does. USC  got beat at the buzzer last week by Washington and now has an opportunity to hand Stanford (4-1) it’s second Pac-10 loss of the season. The Cardinal had a 21-3 lead on Oregon last week and got beat 52-31. I just like Jim Harbaugh’s Stanford team to be tougher than the Boy Wonder who’s coaching the Trojans. Stanford 31, USC 24.

If we can’t beat Tennessee, and I’m confident we will, then that just leaves Eye-Da-Ho (and we very well may be before it’s over) as the only game left in which we could be favored…damn that sucks to think about.

canton, Josh Davis apparently earned himself a little bench time. The freshman Gates is replacing him and Sturdivant is starting to play much more. Barring injury, this might be what the O-line needs to actualy play a decent game for once.

Wow Tony, So UGA will score 2 TD’s ! ! !
that would be GREAT to see this team put up couple of TD’s
I got a real bad feeling that UT is gonna run the ball right down the middle all day long on us.
WE have a history of making hero’s out of opposing teams in this situation.

It took a while this morning to figure it out.
I may use it again…
especially if the Dawgs get back in the

Tony,

LSU defense isn’t that great…they just haven’t played anyone with a decent offense. Florida will win this game BIG at home.

Unfortunately, I don’t think the UGA/TN will be that close. Murray and Green may light up the Vols defense. We are pretty weak at pass rush; thus leaving Green plenty of time to get open.

Go Vols

An athletic department that rakes in $64,000,000 in one year and that contributes $2,000,000 to the University’s general operating fund can afford to buy out that mediocrity of a head coach known as Mark Richt without breaking a sweat.

At the beginning of the season I had picked South Carolina as the most likely game where we get upset. But after playing well against UF and watching AU shred the Carolina D for 334 rushing yards I’m now convinced that we pummel them 27-10.

Florida wins over LSU 20-13 or worse. I just can’t see LSU winning this game at all. Why? Jordan Jefferson passing for less than 100 yds a game going against the best secondary in the country. UF leads the nation with 13 ints, several with good returns. Maybe UF hasn’t worked out all their kinks offensively but they can certainly pass the ball better than Jefferson and that to me is the difference. Both have great defenses so they just offset each other.

UGA-UT-Not really a desperation game for UT since Dooley gets a mulligan in his 1st year. Every game is desperation for Richt so I think UT comes in playing more loose and UGA will be a little tighter. UGA has much better talent on paper but UT definitely has a mental edge from last year and from having blown out UGA several times lately. I like UGA to win a very close game but UT should definitely cover what was almost a 2 td point spread. And while I pick UGA to win a vol win wouldn’t really surprise me at all.

AU- tigers get some payback and run wild on the mildcats defense.

PMC, Yes I think Sparty goes to party in Ann Arbor. This is Michgian’s first real test this year again a Spartan D that has played a couple of decent offenses in Wisconsin and ND. I think they figure out Robinson and limit him to 250 yards of offense. 150 on the ground another 100 in the air. Thing with Robinson is the same thing with Cam Newton, they both take a pounding each week.

Jackie Childs,

Is that 15 seniors the dawgs lose overall which is less than normal graduation attrition on an 85 man team or 15 senior starters which is a much bigger blow? I think everybody normally loses around 20 seniors a year due to graduation.

You guys dismissing LSU’s D clearly have not seen them play. They are big, fast, and mean. They cause turnovers, sack the QB, and gang tackle. They’re all over the field. Drake Nevis, Kelvin Sheppard, and Patrick Peterson are the backbone of this D and are some of the best players at their position in the SEC.

This LSU Defense is every bit as good as Bama’s D. LSU is 2nd in the league in scoring defense and 1st in yards allowed and are only allowing 75 rushing yards per game. 16 sacks so far this season and 6 Int’s. Florida runs a spread offense with a pro-style QB. LSU’s speed can more than handle UF’s while the Secondary will have no problems matching up with Florida’s unimposing receivers.

The problem for LSU is as mentioned the passing offense. Nobody mentions that Steven Ridley is leading the SEC in rushing…LSU averages almost 200 ypg on the ground. The offensive line, while not great has been servicable. Lee was clearly a spark for this passing attack last week so UF will at have to respect it a little. LSU still has the best threesome at WR in the SEC. Just get them the dang ball!!!

All in all, this WILL BE A CLOSE GAME. UF’s offense is stagnant. Les Miles wont make the same mistake two games in a row. Anyone remember the LSU/Arkansas game last year? Yeah, the two minute drive to win the game was a thing of beauty!!

If LSU can get two good TD scoring drives and a field goal or two, they’ll have a great chance of winning this game. Mark it down, the winner will not score more than 24 points.

Geaux Tigers!

Oh and remember last year’s LSU UF game. UF’s offense was much better than years, LSU defense was also in the 1st year of Chavis’ system and not as good as they are this year. Last years score was only 13-3.

So someone please explain to me how in the world you could think UF scores 34???? they couldn’t even get 1 TD against Bama….

@Jeff in Calhoun—

You do realize that LSU has only allowed a total of 62 points this year, right? And that UF is just as inept on Offense as LSU is? Also, UF couldn’t even find the endzone last week against a D that isn’t much better than LSU’s, if at all. LSU’s D is nasty! You might want to pay attention to games before making dumb predictions like that.

Gators will get 28 because Gator D is good and LSU O is non existant. LSU D will be on the field more against the Gators than they have all yr. LSU won’t get 200 total yds & time of poss will be 38-22 min. LSU D worn down, the Gators will pull away in 2nd half thus 28-13 UF. LSU won’t get 200 total yds & time of poss will be 38-22 min.

Tony.

The Florida- LSU game on paper looks like the Auburn -MSU score from a couple of years ago.
3-0, however you know this is the SEC. But it will be a low scoring game, with 2 good defenses.
The question is : How does Florida rebound after Alabama exposed the flaws and weakness that is UF’s offense. LSU in an upset- 14-13

Alabama at USC…this is the toughest game of the big 3 for Alabama. In one closer than many think. Alabama 30- USC 21

Tennessee at UGA. Where to start. Tennessee in a bad late loss in Baton Rouge, do they have anything left in the tank? UGA, and even worse loss to Colorado. Richt needs to win, Dooley wants to win. Which team shows up for UGA is the question. If UGA falls in this one, I do not care what the talking heads say, Richt will be fired or step down. Does that happen? Na.
UGA 35-Tenn 17

GT 38 Virginia 20
Michigan St. 42 Michigan 38
Florida St. 42 Miami 38
Clemson 24 UNC 21
Kentucky in an upset of Auburn 35-27

Good luck to all of your teams.

LSU’s D is better than UF’s offense which equals a lot of 3 and outs. The time of possession will be closer than 38-22 because of this. LSU’s defense wont get worn out because they rotate so many guys in and out. Look what LSU did to West Virginia’s offense (177 total yards), who is much better than UF’s at this point.

I’m not trying to hate because of the game last week. Listen, Florida’s defense causes A LOT of turnovers and turns them into touchdowns….

Lee and Jefferson can’t pass at all. TN has absolutely no pass rush, and still caused three completely unforced interceptions. Floria’s secondary will eat them alive. I predict at least 1 interception return for a touchdown and Meyer WILL NOT kick to Peterson….

Other than the first play of scrimmage where Jefferson went 83 yards; LSU’s offense did very little…Trust me, Florida will cover 6 1/2 all day long

Geaux Tigers, your 5-0 record and defensive stats are nothing more than a product of the schedule. LSU has allowed 62 points vs. a schedule of: UNC(85th offensively), MSU(41st), Vandy(115th), WVU(87th), and Tenn(67th).

Not going to pretend that Bama has played a bunch of world beaters, but we have allowed 45 points (9pg) vs. a schedule of: SJS(110th), Penn St.(56th), Duke(29th), Arky(48th), and Fla(62nd).

Point is that your defense hasn’t really been tested against any kind of big time offense. WVU scored 14 off LSU’s D… and managed all of 24 points against mighty Marshall. Florida’s offensive stats ain’t great, but I like Brantley to get more done than either of the two chuckleheads the Hat will put under center.
