The Fearless Friday Forecast

As the calendar turns to October, let’s hope we have better luck with the Fearless Friday Forecast:

1.  Florida at Alabama: Alabama proved last week at Arkansas that it is good enough and certainly tough enough to at least think about repeating as national champions. The Crimson Tide secondary was vulnerable to the pass but grew up as the game went along. Florida also did some growing up last week by using freshman quarterback Trey Burton in the Wildcat package. He scored a school-record six touchdowns against Kentucky. Alabama coach Nick Saban will try to turn this into a blue collar football game while Florida will hope to hit some big plays against a rebuilt Crimson Tide secondary. Alabama 24, Florida 14.

2.  Miami at Clemson: Clemson has had a week off since a tough overtime loss at Auburn. The question I have is whether or not Miami quarterback Jacory Harris can keep from being an interception machine on the road. He had four at Ohio State on Sept. 11 and two last week at Pittsburgh. Clemson won a shootout (40-37) last year at Miami. This one, played at Death Valley, will feature less scoring but the outcome will be the same. Clemson 17, Miami 14.

3. Georgia Tech at Wake Forest: Wake Forest got off to a 2-0 start by beating Presbyterian and Duke and scoring 107 points in the process. Since then it’s been pretty bleak for the Deacons, losing 68-24 at Stanford and 31-0 at Florida State. The Deacons have given up 147 points against their three Division I-A opponents. I’m not sure why, but Georgia Tech didn’t really have a sense of urgency in last week’s  45-28 loss to N.C. State. The Yellow Jackets bounce back and go to 3-2. Georgia Tech 42, Wake Forest 21.

4. Georgia at Colorado: It was tempting pick Colorado because I don’t know if there is any fight left in this Georgia team. But Colorado (2-1) is so bad and A.J. Green is finally available for the Bulldogs. Colorado will be welcoming back its 1990 AP national championship team but, fortunately for the Bulldogs, Eric Bienemy will not be suiting up for the Buffs.  But you know what? I just talked myself out of picking Georgia. It’s time for this team to man up. I’ll believe it when I see it. Colorado 21, Georgia 20.

5. Virginia Tech at N.C. State: The Wolfpack is 4-0 and showed it was legit last week by winning at Georgia Tech. The young Virginia Tech defense has improved since a 33-30 loss to Boise State on Sept. 6. But has it improved enough to handle N.C. State quarterback Russell Wilson? I think not. N.C. State 28, Virginia Tech 24.

6. Tennessee at LSU: LSU has won four ugly games and on Saturday in Baton Rouge the Tigers will win ugly again. Undermanned Tennessee has played four straight home games to open the season. The Vols needed double overtime and five missed UAB field goals to win last week. LSU’s defense may be the best in the SEC. Its offense, given the talent at hand, might be the worst. LSU 24, Tennessee 3.

7. Stanford at Oregon: If not for Florida-Alabama this would be the best game on the board this weekend. Oregon had to work to win at Arizona State last week but I still think the Ducks are a Top 10 team. Stanford is just mashing everybody they play and Andrew Luck is the best quarterback in the Pac-10. I like the speed of Oregon and the home field edge of Autzen Stadium, where Stanford has lost its last four visits. Oregon 28, Stanford 24.

8. Texas vs. Oklahoma (Dallas):  Man, the air sure went out of this game when Texas lost to UCLA  (34-12) last week. It was the worst Texas loss at home in the Mack Brown era and the Longhorns simply we not ready to play.  That’s won’t be the case this week. Oklahoma has had close wins over Utah State, Air Force, and Cincinnati. It could be that we are looking at two pretty average teams. Look for Texas to commit to stopping the run and hope that OU quarterback Landry Jones won’t beat them. He will. Oklahoma 28, Texas 24.

9. Kentucky at Ole Miss: Kentucky has come back down to Earth after last week’s trip to the woodshed at Florida. But the Ole Miss defense has struggled all season and it won’t be better without DE Kentrell Lockett, who is out for the season with a knee injury. Kentucky 31, Ole Miss 21.

10. Wisconsin at Michigan State: Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio returns after suffering a heart attack two weeks ago after a win over Notre Dame. Dantonio will work from the press box. I like Sparty at home. Michigan State 21, Wisconsin 17.

Tony, you’re dead wrong about the Ole Miss Rebels this weekend. They are going to beat Kentucky.

Jeremiah Masoli has been getting better and better, and this is going to be a breakout game for him.

Yes, Ole Miss’s defense sucks, but the offense is going to be able to put up enough points to overcome that.

Shocker: Ole Miss will win the SEC West this season after Bama, Auburn, LSU, et al., beat themselves senseless and take themselves out of contention.

UGA is lucky it doesn’t have to play Ole Miss this season. Of course, if Ole Miss was on UGA’s schedule, UGA would probably just back out like it did with Oregon.

AJ should not start and Texas Tech

October 1st, 2010

AJ Green should not play in the game until late in the game and that should be mid thrid qtr. This will show the world that Coach Richt can deal with selfish punk players.

UGA faithful will not recall his name in say 4 or 5 more years. AJ Green and Ealey are two men that will soon be forgotton like Japser Sanks has been. Both Ealey and Green will be gone for 2011 but for different reasons.

We will see the beginning of UGA’ new spread offense with Aaron MUrray throwing the ball left and right and verticallybut for the most part, a short to intermediate passing game. It is about time. Aaron MUrray will use the pass to set up the run instead of vice versa. Ala Texas Tech’s old style to move the chains. This will keep UGa alive on long, steady drives and rest our horrific d team. Murray could easily throw for 350 yds with this style of play and UGA should win like 31-20.

Go Dogs.

RxDawg

October 1st, 2010

Well I went out on some upset limbs last week and whiffed on all but the NC St vs Tech game. Lesson learned (which also means there will be upsets everywhere this week)

UGA at Colorado – It’s hard actually think these guys can put together a football game and execute it. As a fan, I feel tremendously pesemistic. I honestly can’t see the Dawgs traveling over there and winning. However, I saw Kirk Herbstreet (sp?) talking a little about the Dawgs. He talked about how bad they were, and all the problems they had etc…. he pretty much ripped them a new one. Then he pretty much laughed at the idea that Colorado would win this weekend. He basicly thought this an easy win for UGA. Huh? Ok, he has less bias then I so I’ll defer to his judgement this weekend on UGA. UGA wins.

If you actually need something tangible to believe in the Dawgs here it is simply put. UGA almost beat Arkansas, Arkansas almost beat the best team in the nation. So while UGA’s reccord stinks (1-3), it might not completely reflect how bad (or good) of a team they are. Plus they get their best player back this week. That’s usually a good thing.

Florida at Bama – The heavy weight of the weekend. You gota go with Bama at home here. That running game of theirs is the envy of the nation. This game might not even be really close.

Miami at Clemson – Clemson took Auburn to the wire. I think Miami got a little overhyped preseason. Clemson had a week to rest, they should calm the storm of Miami. Clemson comfortably.

Virginia Tech at NC State – NC State is playing lights out right now. The Hookies lost to way too many teams they shouldn’t of. Easy pick with NC State.

Hmmm, I’m seeing a Virigina Tech vs. UGA bowl game in the Artics this year. The deserve each other :)

Tennessee at LSU – LSU really improved their game after that horrible win (if there is such a thing) against North Carolina. They have way too many guns for the Vols. Peterson may be the best defensive player in the nation.

Stanford at Oregon – If UF/Bama is Tyson/Hollyfield then here is your Ali/Frazier. Oregon is red hot on offense, Stanford is red hot on deffense. Plus Stanford has a pretty decent QB. This is a really hard pick honestly… Usually that means go with the home team. I think I won’t. I’m going with Stanford. I think they might have a special team this year.

(for what it’s worth, I actually typed out picking Oregon and changed my mind to Stanford)

Texas vs Oklahoma – When has this game garnered so little national attention? I know there are a lot of good games this week, but it seems like no one is talking about the Red River Shootout. Both teams are in the top 25, but neither of them are of quality of old. Texas is the only one with a loss, but Oklahom came very close to it against some inferior teams and moer than once. The Sooners have come way to close and looked bad all year, I think they fall to Texas.

Kentucky at Ole Miss – Vandy beat Ole Miss, Kentucky does too.

cubs fans = georgia fans

October 1st, 2010
9:24 am

the cubs will win the world series next year with their new manager…book it….

a view into the mind of the typical delusional uga fan…..(i know…i used to be one…)

georgia will break out their new no huddle spread wishbone this week, unveiled by offensive genius mike bobo. bobo has been doing some vanilla playcalling to throw opponents off.

in a recent interview bobo said ‘ yeah, we decided to unveil it during our weekly friday morning golf outings at jennings mill- me, coach serles and coach vanhalanger made that decision on the 12th hole. We’ve been working on it while playing NCAA football ‘07 playstation during halftime. We told coach richt, and he talked it up during our team bible study and then prayed about it. The best thing is that the new offense doesn’t require anyone to block – so it will fit in just fine with coach serle’s busy personal life…and the lack of blocking requires no additional strength and conditioning training…which will definately fit in with CVH’s semi retirement plans.”

meanwhile, the coaching rumors continue to swirl around CMR. The latest offer has come from World Vision…who has offered him an opportunity to start the CMR football for jesus academy in botswana. CMR won’t say anything about the recent offer except that he needs to do a lot of soul searching and that the team is working together as a family. Other programs at which reaching a bowl game is quite an achievement have also stated that they would love to have the georgia coach there.

well, folks, that is a wrap for today. My prediction….Colorado 21- UGA 7 (maybe a late 4th quarter touchdown.)

have a great weekend, everyone….and go dawgs!

In other news, the Colorado Buff’s made it official – they view UGA as their “trap game” this season. If they don’t suffer a “let down” after playing more formidable opponents, they should handle the thugdawgs fine.

Rumor has it that the thugdawgs may wear their unique road uniforms of black helmets and black britches, too.

CMR will have a short leash on his offensive staff Sat night. If we don’t score on the first two possessions, I think he will call the plays for the rest of the night. This may be a first in his coaching career but I think he is looking to run up the scoreboard for style points if possible. If that means 72 then so be it, CMR has had and heard enough. Also, rumor is that redshirt and true freshman on the offensive line will get playing time on if the juniors/seniors don’t perform. He has has enough of the spoiled, weak group.

jj, so if Colorado drills UGA, which they will, then UGA is alot worse than worse? When UGA got drilled by lowly MSU, if proved how terrible this program really is, and it can get alot worse. UGA is only 3 losses away from struggling for .500.

I recall some smack talk of how UGA could run the table based on an easier schedule than previous years, but if UGA cannot run the table with this schedule, then there are major issues.

Contrary to today’s conventional wisdom, it is not impossible for the Gators to be beat the Tide in Tuscaloosa. In fact, 9 of the Gators’ 14 wins over the Tide happened in the hostile environments of Tuscaloosa, Birmingham or Montgomery. One of the greatest wins in the history of the Florida Gators football program was the 10-6 upset victory of Ray Graves’ Gators over a 1963 Tide team quarterbacked by Joe Namath in Tuscaloosa—-one of only two losses suffered by the Tide in Tuscaloosa while Bear Bryant was coach. In 1923, future general James Van Fleet’s superbly coached Gators upset the Tide in Tuscaloosa and cost Wallace Wade a Southern Conference title in his first year as coach. On the other hand, the Tide is one of only two teams to ever beat the Gators twice in the same season (1999), the other being FSU (1994).

Oddly, 9 of the Tide’s 21 victories over the Gators took place in either Gainesville or Jacksonville. The overall series record favors the Tide 21-14, but the Gators are 8-5 vs. the Tide since 1990. The outcome of the Alabama-Florida game has determined a Southern Conference or SEC championship at least ten times (1923, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1996, 1999, 2007, 2008, 2009), and has been a key determinant of a national championship at five times (1992, 1996, 2006, 2008, 2009).

The Tide dominated the series while Bryant was coach, posting a 7-1 record between 1963 and 1979. Under Spurrier, the Gators went 6-3 between 1990 and 1999. Under Meyer, the Gators are 2-2 against the Tide.

This really is a much more interesting series than most people seem to remember. Good luck to Tide fans, and may the best team win (it usually does).

Best of the rest—-

2. Clemson over Miami? Home field advantage edge for the CU Tigers worth a 21-14 victory.

3. Georgia Tech gets a feel-good win over Wake Forest 35-10.

4. UGA at Colorado? Well, we’re going to find how bad the Dawgs really are, whether Richt can still motivate his players, and whether UGA will have the same coach next year. My prediction: the Dawgs pull out a squeaker on the road, 17-14.

5. Virginia Tech at NC State? Hokies win one because the Wolfpack has always been good for at least one major choke every season in my lifetime.

6. Tennessee at LSU? Home team Tigers crush the Vols with defense 21-0.

7. Stanford at Oregon? My wild-@ss east coast guess: Cardinal over the Fighting Ducks (or Furry Beavers, or Felonious Transfers, or whatever).

8. Red River Shoot-out? Texas returns to form and beats Oklahoma, 24-17.

9. Kentucky vs. Ole Miss? Wildcats, Wildcats, Wildcats. Pick a score. Nutt has started his slide.

10. Wisconsin at Michigan State? Spartans 13, Bucky Badger 9, and Cloud of Dust 2.

Richt needs to stop talking and start coaching. He is a combination of Barney Fife (Andy Griffith) and Eddie Haskell (Leave it to Beaver) The more he talks the more stupid things he says (Barney) then he tries to get you to believe them (Eddie).Richt is on a mission to save the Bulldog Nation from themselves and to convince us mediocrity is the norm and is ok. I can’t believe he actually said that for the fans watching who actually have their own problems he is going to show us “how to deal with adversity” What a joke, personally I don’t need Richt to show me anything except how to right the ship which is sinking fast! What is the adversity? Is it the fans simply wanting him to take a very talented team (that is getting steamrolled by lesser talent) and make them winners, is that adversity, I think not! The adversity is in his own mind because the fans won’t go along with his inane excuses and alibis. He is trying to get us to go along with his complacency (8 or 9 wins is OK) I think Richt is basically a lazy person who doesn;t have a will to win and he simply doesn;t have the skills to get us to another level and he keeps trying to convince us that where we are is fine and dandy, wrong!!!!!!! He simply needs to get the hell out of Georgia and go to Mt. Sinai and save the world instead of Dawg fans. We don’t ned saving we need a coach who is committed to making us a national player. We never get mentioned on ESPN unless we have an arrest and that is pathetic!

You guys are terrible to and this is really a toss up and i would go with the home team as well with two suck a** teams! The same logic could be applied between GT and georgia in athens. We are not that good as well and georgia could win that game just as easy as tech could. Both programs are stinking it up. Hell, georgia has a really weak schedule and if you do get beat by CU, then with florida, auburn, kentucky and GT left…there is a possibility that ugay could lose 8 games this year. I mean a real legit possibility. I think 6 or 7 is more likely but don’t be shocked that CU is favored at home when you lost to miss st dude. Get real

Tide Rising

Atlanta Gator,

Nice rundown on the gator- bama series. I still think we got a really bad spot on that 4th down in the 1923 game.

UF- Bama game could go either way but I’m giving us a 3-7 pt advantage because of home field and a more seasoned qb and rbs. But would it terribly surprise me if Fla. won? Nope. Not at all. UF has the athletes to do it, Urban always has some great special teams play with blocked punts, fake punts, etc., and the offense seemed to come to life last week. In any event should be a great game.

Georgia- AJ is back so lets hope the dawgs can get it done against the hapless Buffs. I think they will 21-17.

Texas-OU? These 2 teams are looking very average. No true heavyweight in the big 12 this year. I’ll take OU 20-17.

Stanford-Oregon? The other really big, intriguing game of the day. Speed and finesse vs power. Being a Bama fan I’ll take the power game of Stanford in an upset. Oregon is the loudest recorded decibel level crowd noise in the country and the ducks are super tough at home. But something tells me to take Stanford due to its physicality.

LSU-UT LSU D just way too strong for a young UT team going on the road for the 1st time. 24-3

Clemson takes down Miami and NC State does the same to VT. Russell Wilson really is that good and historically NC State has fielded some pretty decent defenses.

Tech runs smack over a terrible Wake defense 35-17.

UK- Ole Miss- I’m taking the mildcats until the rebels rise up and actually do something

Wisconsin-Mich state- Wisconsin is much more physical- badgers win by 10 or less.

Georgia, talent wise, isn’t a bad team. It will sound like a cliché, but If they play with fire and determination (and yes, some better play calling) they win this weekend. They just have to want it bad enough. Georgia, talent wise, isn’t a bad team. It will sound like a cliché, but If they play with fire and determination (and yes, some better play calling) they win. If Richt coached like he did when he first came to UGA, I would like to keep him and we would also probably be doing better. But he is not: so if Colorado wants him, let them buy out his contract. The only way I see Richt keeping his job next year is firing Bobo and Sereals and hiring a great OC and offensive line coach. UGA will finish under .500.

It seems that the Florida faithful are gaining confidence as the week goes along, having talked themselves into expecting victory. Anything is possible, but I have a feeling the Tide might actually put it all together this week. The second half of the Arky game was, in my view, less about the defensive players “growing up” and more about the coaching staff learning about them and how to use them. Florida has talent to keep it close but, like the Florida fans, I’m gaining confidence as well. I say the Tids covers at 31-20.

Much more man coverage and multiple blitz packages from Kirby (Nick’s) defense. Brantley is not Mallet. No need to go into a soft zone in the first half to protect the youngsters. Tide rolls 27-10.

Miles forgets to come out in time for the 2nd half start, getting a delay penalty, then burns all his 2nd half timeouts in the 3rd Q. Vols recover a Peterson fumbled punt late in the game and win on a Lincoln (cough!) field goal.

SEC Fact Checker(the real one)

I wanted to address a couple of points made in todays blog by some poster. I really try to not be confrontational to others as everyone has the right to their opinion.

As for Tony’s prediction(forecast) yeah he lives in Atlanta and has covered UGA, GT and the Falcons over an extended period of time and in more cases he is more likely to read coaches due to his relationships with them and give them the benefit of doubt. Yeah he has picked UGA the past three weeks against teams that in normal circumstances would have won. But as we all know NOW that this version of the Georgia bulldogs is not normal.

We all know that if UGA loses at Colorado that Coach Richt is not going to fire Mike Bobo as coordinator, he may decide he needs to call plays, but there is not a coach on that staff that is going to be fired unless there is some major infraction or if he is arrested for some major crime.

The guys who come on here and make up all kind of false rumors or accusations is are doing one thing, deflecting from their own programs or teams. The comments about CMR, Meyer, Saban or Johnson are a funny read, but when the attacks get personal or someone is called a cheat or liar it goes beyond the rational of a logical thinking man. More than likely the people who write those things never were on a college campus, never involved with a football program at the collegiate level and understand the way of life as a Division 1 football player and the sacrifices made my the coaches, players, trainers, managers and other associates of the program.

Just though I would add my two cents.

Good luck to all of your teams this weekend.

What the hell! As an OREGON DUCK I was really looking forward to hitting the bars in Athens Friday night and experiencing some real SEC tailgating (excluding Mississippi St/Tennessee, our last 2 road games at SEC venues- nice, but still looking for that salacious southern BBQ). Oregon fans were freaking stoked to head to Atlanta, then hop on over to Athens for a battle between the hedges. Ya I get the program is having a hiccup in 2010, back in 2007 when scheduled though both programs were rocking and rolling. Whatev… maybe we’ll meet in a BCS game somewhere / someday.

Good luck in Boulder tomorrow. CAL waxed them 50something – 7. CAL! An average at best Pac-10 team, so, aside from the long trip to Colorado I think you guys should get a victory in the mountain west.

RxDawg & Murphy —

I’m really shocked at how Georgia has played this year. The Dogs were one team I thought would make some noise in the SEC. It’s tough with such a young QB running the offense, but still, that team is still loaded on the edges and I didn’t think the interior would be so sloppy. The game last week was a complete bust, Mississippi State of all teams. MSU looked like a title contender against a spiritless Georgia team.

And yes, Eugene is truly a unique place to see a football game. The game day atmosphere is nuts. One of the largest indoor practice facilities in college football is in the shadows of Autzen Stadium, and they turn it into one huge party. You can grab food at one of a ½ dozen restaurants that set up shop, take a seat and watch one of 100 TVs posted around with games from all over the country. Don’t get too caught up though because there is a gigantic concert stage where live music plays and the famous beautiful Oregon dance team and cheerleaders come in a make a few appearances in the hours leading up to kickoff. The stadium sits just through the woods and literally over the river in it’s own parcel of land, just minutes from campus and downtown Eugene and it truly is a unique place to see a ball game and enjoy tailgating and all the other stuff going on. I’ve been to games from coast to coast, and it’s a special place. Oregon might not have national titles or Heisman trophies to strut around, and with that said there is an immense amount of respect Oregon fans have for SEC football and it’s way of life- similar we like to think of that in Oregon, but game day in Eugene is extraordinary.

DCDuck, yep a damn shame on that game. We are now doing a Florida type scheduling. The thing is IF we were playing that game you guys would be down that year. That’s so that our opponents could rag us for scheduling a mid level PAC-10 team. Or we would be down and you would whip us good. Then your opponents fans could rag you for playing a mid level SEC team. No chance in hell that it would be two top 5 teams from across the country playing for a slot in the BCS NC game. At least according to my crystal ball.

From my experience at most any SEC stadium you get what you give back. Nobody will mess with you for the most part if you just show up, keep your mouth shut, and cheer for your team like a normal person. If you run your mouth loudly and excessively, point fingers, shout obscenities at the home side’s players, stand up in your seat, and generally draw attention to yourself then good luck.

Georgia originally requested 9,000 tickets for this weekend’s game, but only got 5000.

Georgia fans were so desperate to get seats that they tried to beat CU’s online system in August by fraudulently using a promotion code to secure tickets in a special section set aside for the family members of CU’s 1990 national championship team. Nearly 30 people bought a total of 123 tickets using the promotional code, but all those tickets were voided and refunded.

UGA folks can brag all you want to about beating Tech in football most years, and that’s perfectly fair. What’s also fair is to point out that with a history of Jan Kemp (Vince Dooley days), Jim Harrick, Damon Evans, and 44 arrests, UGA is truly “The Cesspool of the South,” and is richly deserving of that title. No one outside of Georgia has any respect for UGA or its athletic department, and that is a fact. It has been said many times: “Tech people are proud of their school, Georgia people are proud of their team.” What a legacy to be proud of!

UGA fans can now return to your mobile home parks and resume waiting for your unemployment checks.

Things got harder this afternoon when it was announced that Caleb Stugis, Florida’s placekicker and kick off specialist, has been lost for 6 to 8 games. Chas Henry will become the kicker and he has never kicked field goals or extra points in a college game….I just hope the game does not come down to making or missing a late field goal….which it could.

BamaTideRoll…..obviously you have not watched Florida play this year. One of their strengths so far has been the ability to almost completely shut down the running game with a great scheme…and very talented and very deep defensive lineman….very good and very fast linebackers….and a secondary that can play man to man against any team’s receivers. Ingram and Richardson are really good….but I don’t think they are going to roll over Florida’s defensive front this time…too deep….too good. Bama is going to have to pass to win the game. I am not worried about the Gator D. I am worried about Florida’s offensive coordinator calling nothing but dive plays up the middle and 2 yard passes all night.

Florida may stay with Alabama early, but eventually Bama’s size and strength on the offensive line and RB will wear down the florida D. Florida’s D was not built to stop the run–they have a bunch of speed guys designed to rush the passer, which doesn’t work against Alabama. Alabama wins pretty easily, pulling away in the second half. Tampa Gator..

I know you have a hard time with this, but if you look back at the USF game at which I was at, remember the long drive that the Bulls had against UF and all the running that was done during that drive. Do you think Alabama’s run game is worse than last year? Do you think Florida’s run defense is better than last years? The answer is a resounding NO to both, and I know UF plans on putting up a 5-2 front against Alabama, what do you think Duke, Penn State, and Arkansas did, they practically ran a 6-2 look against Alabama and could not slow them down. I know you are doing all you can to make yourself feel better about UF, but you and I both know, this version of UF football is still searching to find some identity. Another thing, do you really think Urban will risk Demps against Alabama? If he does then he knows he is desperate. I hope the game is a good one, and I hope it comes down to the 4th quarter just to make ESPN/ABC game less appealing.

Good luck to the gators, I hope you went back to the last time an insulted me by questioning my attendance at two games on the same day. Just to make you aware, I had my choice of games to work this weekend, however my daughter has a gymnastics meet on Sunday a.m. and being a decent father, I passed on the Alabama/ Florida game. Meyers really thinks Fla. can beat Ala. I am beginning to think so too. He has that coach’s smirk on his face, like he has got something for the Tide.

Clemson will beat Miami worse than 3 points. Clemson may be our class team if State is not. If you can hang with Auburn at Auburn you are a pretty good football team. Auburn after today may be the class of the SEC. Miami has great players that can’t get their assignments right ,very much like Georgia.

State beats the tar out of Va.Tech and for once and all stops this name recognition game picking. One of the problems the ACC has is there is a shifting of the guard, and the old teams that were strong are no longer. Va. Tech and Miami are not the cream of the ACC or anywhere. It is like the SEC with Georgia. Based on Georgia the SEC sucks this year. Not a real picture.

What’s up with all the whining? This is a blog — it’s not supposed to be a novel. Tony has a long history as a well respected sports writer. He doesn’t have to prove his mettle on this blog. He is giving us CFB fans a place to congregate and share our own views. If you feel that your writing skills or football knowledge are so superior, then why don’t you post something insightful and compelling rather than ranting about Tony’s picks. There are plenty of gambling sites out there if you’re into playing point spreads.

I think that it was Delbert who recommended the NYT sports blogs in an earlier post. I respect Delbert’s opinion, so I went and checked it out. They have some good writers, but of the several recent blog posts on their “Quad” site for college sports, most had no comments whatsoever. The blog with the most responses had 3 comments posted.

I, for one, appreciate the fact that Tony is willing to lend his name to this blog and provide those of us who enjoy discussing CFB with a place to gather. The Trolls are often bothersome here, but that’s the price one pays for open access. At least there are other fans here. If I just wanted to write my opinions down, I could use a word processor. I’m here for the interaction with the other fans.

It looks like it’s going to be a beautiful day for football and I hope that everyone has a good time gathering with friends and family to enjoy the sport that we love. Best of luck to everyone and may the best teams win. As many others have often noted… they usually do.

SEC Fact Checker…..

In reference to the USF game….which you say you attended along with the game in Bama…..the running backs for USF had hardly any yardage. Almost all of USF’s rushing yards….which most of it came in the first half of the game….was from when the quarterback ran on non-designed running plays and first trying to pass the ball. I do not believe the Bama QB has those kind of rushing skills. Other than that…Florida shut down USF’s regular rushing plays. Kentucky came into last week with a very good rushing attack and….except for garbage yards late in the game when the victory was already determined….Kentucky could not run at all. Stick your head in the sand if you like….but Florida has a very good defensive front 7….much better than Penn State, DUKE…are you comparing Florida to DUKE???….and Arkansas. Florida will not lose the game because of defense. But they might win because the offense puts a total game together. The big thing….BAMA will not be able to wear down Florida this year with the running game….Florida is too good and too deep on the defensive line for that to happen….here are the defensive tackles who could all start for other SEC teams:
-Omar Hunter (big time run stopper so far this year)
-Jaye Howard (best defensive tackle in the SEC so far this year)
-Terron Sanders (started on the last NC team)
-Lawrence Marsh (started on the last NC team)
-Brandon Antwine (first backup on the last NC team)
-Sharief Floyd (best freshman DT in the country this year)
-Dominique Easley (one of the best freshman DT in the country…but has been hurt and will be ready to play against Bama today)

The wearing down might be on the other foot today with those guys coming at you in waves….along with Justin Trattou, Duke Lemmens, William Green, Larentree McCray, and Ronald Powell from the defensive end and LB postions in the 5-2.

And….Janoris Jenkins (probably the best CB in the country other than the kid at LSU), Jeremy Brown (outstanding player), Cody Riggs (has been really good as a freshman nickel back), Ahmad Black (one of the best strong safeties in the country), Will Hill (very good free safety when his head is on right), and Matt Elam (outstanding freshman DB) in the defensive backfield.

And….very good and very fast linebackers in A.J. Jones, Brandon Hicks, Nerion Ball, Joe Bostic, and Jelani Jenkins that should give Bama fits all day.

Yes….I think Florida is BETTER on defense than they were last year. And they are coming on strong on offense as well.

This is going to be a very good football game, I think. But BAMA certainly has the kind of team that could dominate anyone if all the pistons they have are firing at the same time.

….and…if you read my earlier post….I picked BAMA (not Florida) to win the game in a tight one. With Florida winning the rematch in Atlanta later in the year.

TampaGator

Alabama #14….that speed worked two years ago….the problem last year was that Lawrence Marsh (starting DT last year), Terron Sanders (Starting DT last year), A.J. Jones (all SEC pick this year at LB), and Carlos Dunlap did not play in the SEC championship game last year. Florida only had two healthy DTs in the game and Bama did wear them down…..NOT THIS YEAR…MY FRIEND. Omar Hunter at 300 lbs and Jaye Howard at 300 lbs and not just very big….they are very fast and strong. And they are backed up by two former NC game starters at DT…in Marsh and Sanders….and another former starter in Brandon Antwine….and two terrific freshman in Sharieff Floyd and Dominque Easly….NOPE…FLORIDA is NOT going to be worn down today. They might not win…but “wearing down” is not going to be the problem.

DIT,

I think that the Crimson Tide has a special team this year, but I don’t think that they have yet fully gelled as a team, nor have they played up to their full potential thus far. What bothers me about forecasting the outcome of this game is the fact that I could say the same thing about Florida’s team.

I think that either Florida or Alabama would be competitive against any team in the nation. Both teams have elite level talent and coaching. Florida has shown some inconsistency on offense and Bama has had some letdowns on the defensive side of the ball.

I expect both teams to play lights-out because of the buzz associated with this game. Bama’s game at Arkansas was one of a handful of the most historically significant games at Razorback Stadium, because Arkansas didn’t play their biggest games in Fayetteville until relatively recently. The same is true of this game at Bryant Denny. Before the stadium was enlarged, Bama had to play their larger games in either Birmingham or Montgomery. I don’t know if there has been a bigger game than this ever played in Tuscaloosa? It should be a good one.

As for UGA, I don’t think that they could have hung with Arkansas like they did if they were really bad enough to lose to MSU like they did. This Dawg team’s problems are mostly in their heads. I expect them to win easily against the Buffs.

“The tempo is unique,” said the former N.F.L. coach Jon Gruden, who nearly took a job at Oregon to learn Kelly’s offense. “They’re not the only no-huddle, but they’re as fast as any team that plays football.”

“I was dizzy walking off the field,” Gruden said. “It’s a philosophy that is the damndest thing I’ve ever seen. I love it and can’t get enough of it.”

“The N.F.L. scouts on the sideline, the first time they come and watch practice, they’re like, ‘What the heck is this?’ ” Costa said. “They’re mesmerized by it. There’s nothing like it.”

“I was so eager to learn it, I almost took the job,” said Gruden, who turned down a shot to become Kelly’s offensive coordinator to become an ESPN analyst. “My wife said, ‘Are you the craziest human being alive, you want to move to Oregon to learn an offense?’

Nearly 50 people were arrested overnight in downtown Dallas ahead of the Texas-Oklahoma game, local police reported Saturday, according to The Associated Press.

Police said the arrests were for public intoxication, mostly in the West End section of the city, the AP report said.

A news release stated 300 parking tickets were also issued and two vehicles towed.

The No. 8 Sooners and No. 21 Longhorns play Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET at the Cotton Bowl.

The number of arrests amid the revelry before the annual Red River Rivalry had been kept to a minimum before recent games after a major police crackdown in 1993, the year after a 19-year-old man was shot and killed over a minor traffic accident.

Dallas police flooded downtown with 900 officers in the effort, and in the years that followed the city banned pedestrian traffic on Commerce Street, the former center of Texas-Oklahoma pregame festivities.

As a result, the scene migrated to the city’s warehouse entertainment district west of downtown.

That was a total beat down, an embarrassing loss and UF and all that talent you listed on the DL was just that, talent, but that talent got pushed around all night, got sucked into making stupid penalties, missed tackles, and got whipped on the line of scrimmage.

The UF OL was beaten like a rented mule tonight, and there is no way you can come up with anything but to say, “I WAS WRONG”. anything less is just going to be an embarrassment to you.

Now I want every SEC team to win, but after watching both teams play earlier in the season in person, even after watching the UK last week on tape, you could see this Gator team still has no idea how to play a team who lines up and beats at you all night, and Alabama only played hard for the first half and still allowed only 6 points to this UF edition.

SEC Stock Report:

Alabama – UP – 31-6 vs. Florida is all that need be said.

Next Up: South Carolina

Arkansas – UP – Although they didn’t play on Saturday, last week’s close contest vs. the Tide looks even more impressive now. Razorbacks might be the Number Two team in the SEC.

Next Up: Texas A&M

Auburn – UP – Auburn made this outing against Louisiana Monroe look like the cakewalk that it was while winning by a final score of 52-3.

Next Up: Kentucky

Florida – DOWN – The Gators have to put this 31-6 shellacking behind them and prepare for The Hat.

Next Up: LSU

Georgia – DOWN – How low can Tha Dawgs go? A 29-27 loss to Colorado adds insult to injury.

Next Up: Tennessee

Kentucky – DOWN – A 42-35 loss to Ole Miss brings no SEC relief for the Cats.

Next Up: Auburn

LSU – UP – A win is a win – even when you don’t deserve it. LSU 16 Vols 14 in a comedy of errors.

Next Up: Florida

Mississippi – UP – A 42-35 win over the Kentucky Wildcats.

Next Up: Bye Week

Mississippi State – UP – A 49-16 win over Alcorn State was no surprise.

Next Up: Houston

South Carolina – UNCHANGED – The Fighting Birds take an extra week to prepare for the Crimson Tide.

Next Up: Alabama

Tennessee – UP – The scoreboard said LSU 16-14 – but everyone watching knew who really won that game.

Next Up: Georgia

Alabama has a nice little team a bit above avg. but then again who do they play??

I hope the Ducks are fortunate enough to play Alabama in the BCSCG. Your poor little QB will be broken just like McCoy was. Ask John Brantley how he’s feeling today. Oregon can chuck it around but Bama will run the ball down your throats and make enough big plays on defense to win handily. I’ve seen Oregon this year and you just don’t match up in the trenches.

Oh, and one other thing… guess who has NEVER beaten an SEC school in their history (including a couple of recent BCSCG poundings)? OHIO STATE.

Have the Ducks played them lately? How’d ya do?

The PAC 10 doesn’t even hire Defensive Coordinators. They are Offense only and my I add, pretty darn good at offense. The problem is EVERY TIME, and I mean EVERY TIME any PAC 10 teams goes outside their confernce then offense is goes AWOL, because every other league plays defense.

Go back and look at the past 5 years when you play a team outside the conference( with the one exception of a 68 scholarship TENNESSEE team) and review your offense output.

Everyone knows that Oregon plays high school football and anytime they line up with a real conference ..even OHIO ST. ( who Oregon was a 8 point favorite this past January in the Rose Bowl)
gets their diaper changed like a two year old.

As I predicted, Ole Miss beat Kentucky. How? Masoli. Kentucky put up better numbers than Ole Miss in almost all categories, yet Masoli put the Rebels on his back and single-handedly won the game.

Next up: Bye week.

After that: Bama.

Prediction: Ole Miss shocks the world and beats Bama in a shootout: 45-42.

And for all you rednecks, I repeat: UGA is lucky it doesn’t play Ole Miss this year. (Sounds less funny after the Colorado loss, doesn’t it?)

The now neutered team from Gainesville will very likely show up in Atlanta to face Alabama in the SECCG–whether they want to, or not….

Corch, ‘em up Meyer! Won’t do much good–and he knows it. He’ll probably “retire” again.

Man, I H O P E ‘Bama and ORe-GON meet! ‘Bama will bring the wood, the whipping and the shed. All the Ducks’ll need is to bring those tails. It won’t be close. Power and speed vs finesse and speed: it’s football, power wins. “O” runs a high school offense. ‘Bama D will squash it.
Who does ‘Bama play? Who does Oregon play? So what, they beat a way-down UT team that’s not even a shadow of it’s former self.
