The Fearless Friday Forecast

As the calendar turns to October, let’s hope we have better luck with the Fearless Friday Forecast:

1.  Florida at Alabama: Alabama proved last week at Arkansas that it is good enough and certainly tough enough to at least think about repeating as national champions. The Crimson Tide secondary was vulnerable to the pass but grew up as the game went along. Florida also did some growing up last week by using freshman quarterback Trey Burton in the Wildcat package. He scored a school-record six touchdowns against Kentucky. Alabama coach Nick Saban will try to turn this into a blue collar football game while Florida will hope to hit some big plays against a rebuilt Crimson Tide secondary. Alabama 24, Florida 14.

2.  Miami at Clemson: Clemson has had a week off since a tough overtime loss at Auburn. The question I have is whether or not Miami quarterback Jacory Harris can keep from being an interception machine on the road. He had four at Ohio State on Sept. 11 and two last week at Pittsburgh. Clemson won a shootout (40-37) last year at Miami. This one, played at Death Valley, will feature less scoring but the outcome will be the same. Clemson 17, Miami 14.

3. Georgia Tech at Wake Forest: Wake Forest got off to a 2-0 start by beating Presbyterian and Duke and scoring 107 points in the process. Since then it’s been pretty bleak for the Deacons, losing 68-24 at Stanford and 31-0 at Florida State. The Deacons have given up 147 points against their three Division I-A opponents. I’m not sure why, but Georgia Tech didn’t really have a sense of urgency in last week’s  45-28 loss to N.C. State. The Yellow Jackets bounce back and go to 3-2. Georgia Tech 42, Wake Forest 21.

4. Georgia at Colorado: It was tempting pick Colorado because I don’t know if there is any fight left in this Georgia team. But Colorado (2-1) is so bad and A.J. Green is finally available for the Bulldogs. Colorado will be welcoming back its 1990 AP national championship team but, fortunately for the Bulldogs, Eric Bienemy will not be suiting up for the Buffs.  But you know what? I just talked myself out of picking Georgia. It’s time for this team to man up. I’ll believe it when I see it. Colorado 21, Georgia 20.

5. Virginia Tech at N.C. State: The Wolfpack is 4-0 and showed it was legit last week by winning at Georgia Tech. The young Virginia Tech defense has improved since a 33-30 loss to Boise State on Sept. 6. But has it improved enough to handle N.C. State quarterback Russell Wilson? I think not. N.C. State 28, Virginia Tech 24.

6. Tennessee at LSU: LSU has won four ugly games and on Saturday in Baton Rouge the Tigers will win ugly again. Undermanned Tennessee has played four straight home games to open the season. The Vols needed double overtime and five missed UAB field goals to win last week. LSU’s defense may be the best in the SEC. Its offense, given the talent at hand, might be the worst. LSU 24, Tennessee 3.

7. Stanford at Oregon: If not for Florida-Alabama this would be the best game on the board this weekend. Oregon had to work to win at Arizona State last week but I still think the Ducks are a Top 10 team. Stanford is just mashing everybody they play and Andrew Luck is the best quarterback in the Pac-10. I like the speed of Oregon and the home field edge of Autzen Stadium, where Stanford has lost its last four visits. Oregon 28, Stanford 24.

8. Texas vs. Oklahoma (Dallas):  Man, the air sure went out of this game when Texas lost to UCLA  (34-12) last week. It was the worst Texas loss at home in the Mack Brown era and the Longhorns simply we not ready to play.  That’s won’t be the case this week. Oklahoma has had close wins over Utah State, Air Force, and Cincinnati. It could be that we are looking at two pretty average teams. Look for Texas to commit to stopping the run and hope that OU quarterback Landry Jones won’t beat them. He will. Oklahoma 28, Texas 24.

9. Kentucky at Ole Miss: Kentucky has come back down to Earth after last week’s trip to the woodshed at Florida. But the Ole Miss defense has struggled all season and it won’t be better without DE Kentrell Lockett, who is out for the season with a knee injury. Kentucky 31, Ole Miss 21.

10. Wisconsin at Michigan State: Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio returns after suffering a heart attack two weeks ago after a win over Notre Dame. Dantonio will work from the press box. I like Sparty at home. Michigan State 21, Wisconsin 17.

ALABAMA. ALL things about this state suck. Mainly the u of alabama and all their coaches especially coach paul bryant. Secondly, auburn univ and everything they stand for. Each year a few students from my town go to alabama or auburn because they could not qualify for entrance into the state university in the state where I live. Hey, these are not athletes! They are just dumb, or non achievers. Here is wishing the worst to you athletically. alabama sucks.

I’m with you on Georgia. I’m not sure if I’ll believe it if I see it though. If Georgia loses this game, it will get ugly in Athens. I sure hope AJ Green is prepared to put this team on his shoulders for the next month.

The offensive line is a joke. How about kicking the next lineman that loafs off the team. Talk about a zero tolerance policy.

Do any of you wish there was some form of IQ Verification or Age minimum to post on here? Some of these guys or gals must have access to the computer only til mom or dad get home and post everything idiotic as possible. If their parents knew or if they had a proper education they could have a civilized conversation without all the bravado.

@Delbert D.

“Will Florida fans actually be allowed to get into Bryant-Denny Stadium, or will hot oil be poured on them from the ramparts?”

Ha!

You’ve probably been to BDS Delbert. Tell the truth — Alabamians take their cultural heritage of Southern hospitality very seriously, don’t they? This is all great Friday afternoon trash talk, but I fully expect the folks in Tuscaloosa to go out of their way to welcome the Gator fans — win or lose.

I have no idea how this game will play out on the field, but I do expect a classic contest and I can’t wait to get this party started. Hope that everyone who attends has a great experience. That said, I hope the Tide takes care of business and notches another “W” when it’s all said and done.

Appreciate that MURPHY

Unfortunatley, I just don’t see one guy making a difference. As much as I would like to think that UGA will beat CU, I just don’t. Last week they were so flat and had no confidence that they can come back. CU will be absolutley stoked for this game. If our O-Line remembers how to block and open some holes it can get ugly for CU. Again, my confidence level is not there to see that. What do you think?

Agreed, Palladin – I’ve been to games at BDS, BHG and ATL where we’ve beaten Bama and been beaten by Bama, and never had any problems in either instance. Every fan base has some zeros to be sure, but the majority of Bama fans that I’ve talked to have been good people.

Palladin -Yep, several trips to Bobby Dodd Stadium, and also Sanford Stadium as a kid. People were different back then. Ever notice how odd people sound on old newsreels? It seems that the internet age has made it possible for tribes to get whipped into an absolute frenzy 365 days a year, and maniacal by game week (every one). My self restraint trick is that I’m not going to scream in semi-public on the blogs that *my* team is going to destroy *your* team unless I’m willing to empty my bank account and bet it on the line in Las Vegas.

It should be an entertaining game tomorrow, and I hope both the Gators and the Tide play at their best.

MURPHY is upset that someone would “disrespect a man of Paul Bryant’s stature”, BALONEY. Do some research. Bryant was far from a man with stature or integrity. As a rule, Bryant would sign many players he never intended to play just to keep othe schools, namely Auburn Univ from signing them.
Saban follows in Bryant’s tradition.

To all the Bama fans I need to apologize for a derange Florida student putting a profane laced video on utube disparaging Bama. That’s not the typical fan.

The players on both sides respect the other and both say it’s the cleanest game they play all year. I just hope the fans on each side will show the same class that their team shows on the field.

Ps to the dawg fans, don’t give me that crap about Spikes, he may have tried, but did no damage, as Ealey has stated. It was done of frustration from all the cheap Florida was taking in that game, that still doesn’t excuse it, but there was a reason Georgia lead the nation in penalties last year. OH, and how about Ben Jones, he didn’t know you can’t cut a man from behind (ending a career) with his back turned 15 yards down field and 15 yards behind the play.. What did St, Richt do about this lapse in INTERGITY

Even the fans CHEAT, fromBoulder, CO:

Georgia originally requested 9,000 tickets for this weekend’s game, but only got 5000.

Georgia fans were so desperate to get seats that they tried to beat CU’s online system in August by fraudulently using a promotion code to secure tickets in a special section set aside for the family members of CU’s 1990 national championship team. Nearly 30 people bought a total of 123 tickets using the promotional code, but all those tickets were voided and refunded.

Some locals are dreading the arrival of the Bulldogs fans.
“I view them as the rudest and most hostile fans I have ever witnessed from a football game,” said Brad Morrow, who used to live in Atlanta before moving to Colorado.

UGA folks can brag all you want to about beating Tech in football most years, and that’s perfectly fair. What’s also fair is to point out that with a history of Jan Kemp (Vince Dooley days), Jim Harrick, Damon Evans, and 44 arrests, UGA is truly “The Cesspool of the South,” and is richly deserving of that title. No one outside of Georgia has any respect for UGA or its athletic department, and that is a fact. It has been said many times: “Tech people are proud of their school, Georgia people are proud of their team.” What a legacy to be proud of!

UGA fans can now return to your mobile home parks and resume waiting for your unemployment checks.
