The Fearless Friday Forecast

As the calendar turns to October, let’s hope we have better luck with the Fearless Friday Forecast:

1.  Florida at Alabama: Alabama proved last week at Arkansas that it is good enough and certainly tough enough to at least think about repeating as national champions. The Crimson Tide secondary was vulnerable to the pass but grew up as the game went along. Florida also did some growing up last week by using freshman quarterback Trey Burton in the Wildcat package. He scored a school-record six touchdowns against Kentucky. Alabama coach Nick Saban will try to turn this into a blue collar football game while Florida will hope to hit some big plays against a rebuilt Crimson Tide secondary. Alabama 24, Florida 14.

2.  Miami at Clemson: Clemson has had a week off since a tough overtime loss at Auburn. The question I have is whether or not Miami quarterback Jacory Harris can keep from being an interception machine on the road. He had four at Ohio State on Sept. 11 and two last week at Pittsburgh. Clemson won a shootout (40-37) last year at Miami. This one, played at Death Valley, will feature less scoring but the outcome will be the same. Clemson 17, Miami 14.

3. Georgia Tech at Wake Forest: Wake Forest got off to a 2-0 start by beating Presbyterian and Duke and scoring 107 points in the process. Since then it’s been pretty bleak for the Deacons, losing 68-24 at Stanford and 31-0 at Florida State. The Deacons have given up 147 points against their three Division I-A opponents. I’m not sure why, but Georgia Tech didn’t really have a sense of urgency in last week’s  45-28 loss to N.C. State. The Yellow Jackets bounce back and go to 3-2. Georgia Tech 42, Wake Forest 21.

4. Georgia at Colorado: It was tempting pick Colorado because I don’t know if there is any fight left in this Georgia team. But Colorado (2-1) is so bad and A.J. Green is finally available for the Bulldogs. Colorado will be welcoming back its 1990 AP national championship team but, fortunately for the Bulldogs, Eric Bienemy will not be suiting up for the Buffs.  But you know what? I just talked myself out of picking Georgia. It’s time for this team to man up. I’ll believe it when I see it. Colorado 21, Georgia 20.

5. Virginia Tech at N.C. State: The Wolfpack is 4-0 and showed it was legit last week by winning at Georgia Tech. The young Virginia Tech defense has improved since a 33-30 loss to Boise State on Sept. 6. But has it improved enough to handle N.C. State quarterback Russell Wilson? I think not. N.C. State 28, Virginia Tech 24.

6. Tennessee at LSU: LSU has won four ugly games and on Saturday in Baton Rouge the Tigers will win ugly again. Undermanned Tennessee has played four straight home games to open the season. The Vols needed double overtime and five missed UAB field goals to win last week. LSU’s defense may be the best in the SEC. Its offense, given the talent at hand, might be the worst. LSU 24, Tennessee 3.

7. Stanford at Oregon: If not for Florida-Alabama this would be the best game on the board this weekend. Oregon had to work to win at Arizona State last week but I still think the Ducks are a Top 10 team. Stanford is just mashing everybody they play and Andrew Luck is the best quarterback in the Pac-10. I like the speed of Oregon and the home field edge of Autzen Stadium, where Stanford has lost its last four visits. Oregon 28, Stanford 24.

8. Texas vs. Oklahoma (Dallas):  Man, the air sure went out of this game when Texas lost to UCLA  (34-12) last week. It was the worst Texas loss at home in the Mack Brown era and the Longhorns simply we not ready to play.  That’s won’t be the case this week. Oklahoma has had close wins over Utah State, Air Force, and Cincinnati. It could be that we are looking at two pretty average teams. Look for Texas to commit to stopping the run and hope that OU quarterback Landry Jones won’t beat them. He will. Oklahoma 28, Texas 24.

9. Kentucky at Ole Miss: Kentucky has come back down to Earth after last week’s trip to the woodshed at Florida. But the Ole Miss defense has struggled all season and it won’t be better without DE Kentrell Lockett, who is out for the season with a knee injury. Kentucky 31, Ole Miss 21.

10. Wisconsin at Michigan State: Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio returns after suffering a heart attack two weeks ago after a win over Notre Dame. Dantonio will work from the press box. I like Sparty at home. Michigan State 21, Wisconsin 17.

Wow, some upset love for the Vols. We might win if we convert our third downs. We will NOT win if we do not convert on third down. LSU defense will be tough, and not because Chavis is coaching it. I could coach that talent. Dawgs better find a way to pry their heads out of their butts this weekend, or it will get really, really ugly in Athens.

JJ, what’s the big surprise of CU being picked over ugay? Do you not recall losing to a 1-3 miss st team that rattles cow bells as their rally cry? GT even drummed them last year at miss st. You guys are terrible to and this is really a toss up and i would go with the home team as well with two suck a** teams! The same logic could be applied between GT and georgia in athens. We are not that good as well and georgia could win that game just as easy as tech could. Both programs are stinking it up. Hell, georgia has a really weak schedule and if you do get beat by CU, then with florida, auburn, kentucky and GT left…there is a possibility that ugay could lose 8 games this year. I mean a real legit possibility. I think 6 or 7 is more likely but don’t be shocked that CU is favored at home when you lost to miss st dude. Get real

Taxjacket, why post 45-42 anymore to ugay fans? That was 2 years ago and we got beat last year at home man. They have the bragging rights fair and square. That’s kinda lame imo. Just hope we win this year and we can get the bragging rights back. News flash, it was 30-24 georgia last year and it is painful for me to type that! Georgia always plays well vs GT and i expect the same again to be honest. It should be a great game with a pathetic offense vs a pathetic defense. Who knows what will happen in this toilet bowl!

Georgia wins easily and the Tide-Gator game will be determined in the 4th quarter….and I like the Gators chances….but it would take a lot to upset the Tide at home. Gators probably lose game #1….and it will probably be their only loss of the season….including the SEC championship game and a BCS Bowl game…which will not be the BCS championship game because of the one loss to Bama.

UGA vs UT going to be the #1 Ugliest SEC Game of the Season-so-far! Both teams will be winless in the conference (yep, LSU has no problem this week; sorry Vollies), with losing records overall, and looking for “something” some sign of hope; something to build upon. At least UT had 0 expectations this year so they have THAT going for them….yeech.

While Bama has not yet clicked on all cylinders as they did last season Florida cannot last four quarters against The Tide.
Picking Bama over The Gators is not even a tough call. Bama by 10 – no, make that 14 points.

Atlanta Gator,

Nice rundown on the gator- bama series. I still think we got a really bad spot on that 4th down in the 1923 game.

UF- Bama game could go either way but I’m giving us a 3-7 pt advantage because of home field and a more seasoned qb and rbs. But would it terribly surprise me if Fla. won? Nope. Not at all. UF has the athletes to do it, Urban always has some great special teams play with blocked punts, fake punts, etc., and the offense seemed to come to life last week. In any event should be a great game.

Georgia- AJ is back so lets hope the dawgs can get it done against the hapless Buffs. I think they will 21-17.

Texas-OU? These 2 teams are looking very average. No true heavyweight in the big 12 this year. I’ll take OU 20-17.

Stanford-Oregon? The other really big, intriguing game of the day. Speed and finesse vs power. Being a Bama fan I’ll take the power game of Stanford in an upset. Oregon is the loudest recorded decibel level crowd noise in the country and the ducks are super tough at home. But something tells me to take Stanford due to its physicality.

LSU-UT LSU D just way too strong for a young UT team going on the road for the 1st time. 24-3

Clemson takes down Miami and NC State does the same to VT. Russell Wilson really is that good and historically NC State has fielded some pretty decent defenses.

Tech runs smack over a terrible Wake defense 35-17.

UK- Ole Miss- I’m taking the mildcats until the rebels rise up and actually do something

Wisconsin-Mich state- Wisconsin is much more physical- badgers win by 10 or less.

Georgia, talent wise, isn’t a bad team. It will sound like a cliché, but If they play with fire and determination (and yes, some better play calling) they win this weekend. OREGON WILL BEAT STANFORD, pencil that one in Tony. No way they stroll into a frenzied Autzen and beat us. Is there a chance? Sure. Oregon’s speed will sprint by Stanford’s defense, and Oregon’s got more muscle up front on the defensive side of the ball than most are giving them credit for.

Bama’s secondary won’t fall for the “Riley Cooper Shirt Grab” move. They will hold back and throw the timing off. You Gayturds are gonna lose.

If Richt coached like he did when he first came to UGA, I would like to keep him and we would also probably be doing better. But he is not: so if Colorado wants him, let them buy out his contract. The only way I see Richt keeping his job next year is firing Bobo and Sereals and hiring a great OC and offensive line coach. UGA will finish under .500.

It seems that the Florida faithful are gaining confidence as the week goes along, having talked themselves into expecting victory. Anything is possible, but I have a feeling the Tide might actually put it all together this week. The second half of the Arky game was, in my view, less about the defensive players “growing up” and more about the coaching staff learning about them and how to use them. Florida has talent to keep it close but, like the Florida fans, I’m gaining confidence as well. I say the Tids covers at 31-20.

Much more man coverage and multiple blitz packages from Kirby (Nick’s) defense. Brantley is not Mallet. No need to go into a soft zone in the first half to protect the youngsters. Tide rolls 27-10.

Miles forgets to come out in time for the 2nd half start, getting a delay penalty, then burns all his 2nd half timeouts in the 3rd Q. Vols recover a Peterson fumbled punt late in the game and win on a Lincoln (cough!) field goal.

SEC Fact Checker(the real one)

October 1st, 2010
2:32 pm

I wanted to address a couple of points made in todays blog by some poster. I really try to not be confrontational to others as everyone has the right to their opinion.

As for Tony’s prediction(forecast) yeah he lives in Atlanta and has covered UGA, GT and the Falcons over an extended period of time and in more cases he is more likely to read coaches due to his relationships with them and give them the benefit of doubt. Yeah he has picked UGA the past three weeks against teams that in normal circumstances would have won. But as we all know NOW that this version of the Georgia bulldogs is not normal.

We all know that if UGA loses at Colorado that Coach Richt is not going to fire Mike Bobo as coordinator, he may decide he needs to call plays, but there is not a coach on that staff that is going to be fired unless there is some major infraction or if he is arrested for some major crime.

The guys who come on here and make up all kind of false rumors or accusations is are doing one thing, deflecting from their own programs or teams. The comments about CMR, Meyer, Saban or Johnson are a funny read, but when the attacks get personal or someone is called a cheat or liar it goes beyond the rational of a logical thinking man. More than likely the people who write those things never were on a college campus, never involved with a football program at the collegiate level and understand the way of life as a Division 1 football player and the sacrifices made my the coaches, players, trainers, managers and other associates of the program.

Just though I would add my two cents.

Good luck to all of your teams this weekend.

What the hell! As an OREGON DUCK I was really looking forward to hitting the bars in Athens Friday night and experiencing some real SEC tailgating (excluding Mississippi St/Tennessee, our last 2 road games at SEC venues- nice, but still looking for that salacious southern BBQ). Oregon fans were freaking stoked to head to Atlanta, then hop on over to Athens for a battle between the hedges. Ya I get the program is having a hiccup in 2010, back in 2007 when scheduled though both programs were rocking and rolling. Whatev… maybe we’ll meet in a BCS game somewhere / someday.

Good luck in Boulder tomorrow. CAL waxed them 50something – 7. CAL! An average at best Pac-10 team, so, aside from the long trip to Colorado I think you guys should get a victory in the mountain west.

RxDawg & Murphy —

I’m really shocked at how Georgia has played this year. The Dogs were one team I thought would make some noise in the SEC. It’s tough with such a young QB running the offense, but still, that team is still loaded on the edges and I didn’t think the interior would be so sloppy. The game last week was a complete bust, Mississippi State of all teams. MSU looked like a title contender against a spiritless Georgia team.

And yes, Eugene is truly a unique place to see a football game. The game day atmosphere is nuts. One of the largest indoor practice facilities in college football is in the shadows of Autzen Stadium, and they turn it into one huge party. You can grab food at one of a ½ dozen restaurants that set up shop, take a seat and watch one of 100 TVs posted around with games from all over the country. Don’t get too caught up though because there is a gigantic concert stage where live music plays and the famous beautiful Oregon dance team and cheerleaders come in a make a few appearances in the hours leading up to kickoff. The stadium sits just through the woods and literally over the river in it’s own parcel of land, just minutes from campus and downtown Eugene and it truly is a unique place to see a ball game and enjoy tailgating and all the other stuff going on. I’ve been to games from coast to coast, and it’s a special place. Oregon might not have national titles or Heisman trophies to strut around, and with that said there is an immense amount of respect Oregon fans have for SEC football and it’s way of life- similar we like to think of that in Oregon, but game day in Eugene is extraordinary.

DCDuck, yep a damn shame on that game. We are now doing a Florida type scheduling. The thing is IF we were playing that game you guys would be down that year. That’s so that our opponents could rag us for scheduling a mid level PAC-10 team. Or we would be down and you would whip us good. Then your opponents fans could rag you for playing a mid level SEC team. No chance in hell that it would be two top 5 teams from across the country playing for a slot in the BCS NC game. At least according to my crystal ball.

From my experience at most any SEC stadium you get what you give back. Nobody will mess with you for the most part if you just show up, keep your mouth shut, and cheer for your team like a normal person. If you run your mouth loudly and excessively, point fingers, shout obscenities at the home side’s players, stand up in your seat, and generally draw attention to yourself then good luck.
