Florida’s Meyer rolling the dice with Chris Rainey

Nobody asked me but:

1. Urban Meyer is rolling the dice with Chris Rainey: The Florida wide receiver had his felony stalking charge knocked down to a misdemeanor and will not be prosecuted for this text message threat to a Gainesville woman. I know that Meyer likes this kid and has tried to work with him, but if Rainey is allowed back on the team and something goes wrong, the University is going to be in a very vulnerable position from a liability standpoint. Meyer knows the kid. I don’t.  Local authorities have assessed the situation and don’t believe there is a threat. The woman involved is not pressing charges and issued a public statement saying that she does not believe there is a threat. That’s all well and good.

All I know is that since the Virginia lacrosse case (where a male member of the lacrosse team killed a female member of a team in the same sport by beating her head against a wall), the wisest policy is zero tolerance when it comes to threats towards women.

2.  I was wrong about Mark Ingram and the Heisman Trophy: When Ingram missed the first two games of Alabama’s season with a knee injury, I assumed that he was out of the Heisman Trophy race and would not repeat as the winner. I was wrong. I think Ingram is very much in the Heisman race after his 157-yard day against Arkansas. A lot of national media saw his incredible 54-yard touchdown run early in the game and how he was the most dominant player on the field in the fourth quarter when Alabama stormed back to win 24-20. Saturday he gets another national stage when No. 1 Alabama hosts No. 7 Florida.

3. Playoff PAC is out of line: Playoff PAC is a political action committee that is working towards eliminating the BCS and replacing it with some kind of playoff system. This is America and that is what political action committees are for: advocating and advancing a point of view through the political process. I have no problem with that. But the lawyers who work  (free of charge) for Playoff PAC have been sifting through the tax returns of the four BCS bowls looking for dirt. They think they’ve found some in the compensation packages for some of the bowl executive directors. Playoff PAC has filed a 27-page complaint to the IRS.

These guys want a playoff  and someday that might come to pass. It’s a good argument but they haven’t won it yet. So in order achieve your objective you’re going to sick the IRS on people who deem to be opponents? I’m for a four-team playoff but guys but this is over the line. It’s just a football game.

4.The ACC may be bad, but the Big East is worse: We’ve been beating up the ACC and its 1-9 record against non-conference BCS opponents in the first three weeks of the season. But the Big East is worse at 1-10 against the BCS and 6-13 against all Division I-A opponents. Pittsburgh, which was supposed to be one of the two best teams in that league just got mauled at home by Miami. West Virginia, the other top team, lost at LSU. The lowest ranked team to ever play in a BCS game was 8-3 Pittsburgh, which played and lost to Utah in the 2004 Fiesta Bowl. That team was ranked 21st in the final BCS Standings. The Big East champion of 2010 could be worse.

5. LSU may have the best defense in the SEC: I have to admit that I had my doubts about the LSU defense when it got torched for over 400 yards passing in its opener with North Carolina. But since then John Chavis has whipped his troops into shape. Chavis has moved from  working the game from the sidelines to up in the press box. I don’t know if that is a factor but here are the results going into Saturday’s home game with Tennessee: LSU is first in the SEC in total defense (254.0 ypg), first in rushing defense (74.8 ypg), and second in scoring defense (12.0 ypg). Alabama leads in scoring defense at 9.8 points per game. Chavis told Scott Rabalais of the Baton Rouge Morning Advocate that he has been emphasizing speed over size. “For some reason I can coach the ones who run faster,” Chavis said. That speed will come in handy next week when LSU goes to Florida.

Coach Urban Meyer is scum. He should not allow any of his thugs to take the field. I have lost any and all respect for Meyer after his team’s 30 arrests.

Tony – I give not credit to Mark Ingram and anything associated with that lying, cheating program Nick Satan runs over in Tuskaloser.

Cam Newton has a better shot at the Heisman, he’s far superior and hasn’t missed any games – all the while leading us to a perfect 4-0 mark.

The bowls are suppose to be not for profit companies. What the lawyers are looking for is showing that they are not. The bowls are basically a monopoly, if the BCS and NCAA lost it not for profit label we would get a college football playoff.

Don’t forget Tony, the government used the same tactics of using the IRS on Al Capone.

1. A “zero tolerance” policy often has widespread public support, but it is NEVER “wise”. Wisdom requires the consideration of extenuating circumstances in each individual case. People often get into arguments and say things that they don’t really mean in the heat of the moment. Were we all exposed to the media spotlight that illuminates high profile athletes, such a zero tolerance policy would render most of us unemployed or imprisoned for brief incidents of impropriety induced by anger.

2. Mark is certainly worthy of consideration for the Heisman award. That said, I suspect that he would rather have a NC ring for his other hand than another fancy doorstop.

3. Playoff PAC is just one more example of lawyering gone wild.

4. Small consolation for the ACC.

5. There is no denying that LSU has an excellent defensive squad. That said, early season stats are often misleading, as the early games tend to include a heavy dose of cream-puffs.

1. Thanks for the opinion Tony. Not sure where it’s coming from as there’s been no mention of him being returned to the team, but a tip of the hat to you for the flame fest that will ensue in these comments. I personally don’t think he should come back this season, but at the very least you’ve ensured this entry will get tons of comments.

2. Agreed. The guy is an absolute stud. Fearing his impact on this weekend’s game.

3. I have zero problem with these guys investigating the tax stuff of the bowl execs. At the end of the day, if you pay your taxes and don’t cheat you have nothing to worry about. How is it over the line?

4. This point seems obvious and irrelevant all at the same time.

5. LSU does have a great D, but I want to see them matched up against a high powered offense before they’re crowned. WVU, UNC, and Miss. St. aren’t the best offensive sides they’ll see, but you can’t take anything away from them; they’re fast, athletic, and hungry. Should be a great game in the Swamp.

Palladin,

Excellent point on the Rainey stuff. While I still think he should not be allowed to come back, you make very good points about extenuating circumstances and such. Could totally see that argument, and there’s probably a little ‘let he without sin cast the first stone…’ sentiment which I can certainly understand. However, I still think, emotion or not, that’s a line that’s hard to cross and then explain away later. Not something you play with. Admittedly when I read that it was the sister who called the cops and the original girl said not to, I was skeptical, but you just can’t put yourself in that position and leave it up to others to determine your motives.

I dont believe that I have let him back on the team yet, have I TB???

One angle to the story that has not been investigated….or at least I have not seen it written about, is that Rainey suffered a concussion in the game just before this incident took place. Could the concussion have anything to do with his behavior?? Could it have been a contributing factor?? Maybe she did need to be put in her place..we just don’t know the whole story.

Playoff PAC is not investigating tax impropriety. They have used IRS information to “prove” that bowl executives receive generous salaries. This fact might anger some college football fans, but it is hardly illegal. Were that the case, then the Red Cross would have to be shut down immediately, since they offer more generous benefit packages to their not-for-profit executives than do any of the bowl committees.

Since AL has been in recent touble with NCAA that might have resulted in not only loss of games but loss of a Campionship like USC. Any thoughts?

Boneheart wants a 4 team playoff and wants at least 3 (2 division winners plus highest ranked 2nd place division runnerup) of them to be SEC teams. I can hear him lamenting now, “how can they pick the Big 12 champ over a 3?4? loss SEC team?” Of course, all these games would have to be played in Atlanta, Birmingham, New Orleans.

Boneheart should also be helping Saint Richt with disciplining his team and leave Meyer alone.

Palladin,

Oh, OK. If they’re simply using tax records to show someone’s salary, then you’re right, that is onerous.

I assumed, however, that if they had filed a complaint to the IRS surrounding the packages, there was some tax issues involved as I don’t imagine you can complain about someone’s salary. Otherwise, there are a lot of people I know who get paid excessive salaries and I’ve got some complaints to send in to the IRS. :)

1. People are always quick to rush to judgement when an athlete is charged with something. I hope that Meyer has made the correct call.
2. Ingram has an excellent chance of winning the Heisman, but if Denard Robinson keeps playing the way he has the trophy will be going to Ann Arbor.
3. The PlayoffPAC is not out of line. The Bowls are registered as tax-exempt charitable organizations and they need to follow the IRS rules. Quoting the suit
“Playoff PAC’s review uncovered a disturbing pattern of BCS Bowl organizations using their charitable funds to enrich Bowl executives, pay registered lobbyists without disclosure, fund political campaigns, and heap frivolous benefits on Bowl insiders. The BCS Bowls’ activities raise important concerns under federal tax laws and we anticipate that the IRS will give these issues due attention.”

http://blogs.forbes.com/sportsmoney/2010/09/23/playoff-pac-files-irs-complaint-against-bcs-bowls/

4. The ACC is better than the Big East but that is no cause for celebration.
5. LSU gives up over 400 passing yards to TJ Yates and they have one of the best Ds in the SEC. GT gives up just over 200 passing yards to Yates and they have the worst D in the ACC.
Moral: You can’t judge a D by 1 game.

Wrong Palladin. While not illegal per-se (as in criminal), not for profits have guidelines and lose their not for profit status if it can be shown that salaries paid are exorbitant. It is ludicrous that these bowls have non-profit and not-for-profit statuses, when they exist solely as profit centers. Don’t get me wrong, I love the bowls, but the tax laws are clearly being abused.

@DAWG07

Marcell Dareus was under the false impression that a friend was paying his expenses to attend the party in Miami. When he discovered that the money was actually coming from a sports agent, he immediately self-reported the incident and he and the University cooperated fully with the NCAA in their investigation.

Perhaps A.J. was less forthcoming in reporting his own violations? If you think that the NCAA is cutting Alabama slack in this case, then you obviously haven’t followed the history of interactions between the NCAA and the University of Alabama.

Volunteer fan calling out Meyer for a dirty program? That’s rich. How about those clowns (Nukeese Richardson, et al) in Knoxville last year?

When you put a football team together, a lot of times you’re talking about guys who didn’t have three squares and a roof over their heads and a male and female role model to figure out how to avoid and resolve problems. In Rainey’s case, he lost his parents to the streets and he was headed the same way until the Pouncey family took him in.

His conduct was inexcusable and he needed to be punished and he has been and will continue to be. Question now is, do you give up on him?

My answer, and apparently Meyer’s, is, no. He’s on a short leash, but you see if you can keep him on the path. It’s a tough problem because the text he sent was horrifying. Who knows what the conflict was about; it’s inappropriate. It’s criminal. How you deal with it is the question.

My sense of Chris Rainey is that there’s still something there worth working with, and it’s not 4.4 speed. I think he’s a decent guy who got out of control.

Scarbinsky: Gators would be much better today with Cam Newton

ou can’t look forward to Florida coming to Alabama without looking back at the road that took Cam Newton to Auburn. It’s not possible unless you’re in absolute denial after witnessing his rare and obvious talents.

A different action here, a different decision there, and Newton could be coming to Alabama as the Florida quarterback. Florida could be reloading on offense, rather than rebuilding.

For the third straight year, Alabama and Florida could be meeting as the top two teams in the nation. Or not. No one will ever know for sure.

This much, we do know. One sequence of events two years ago involving Newton had a bigger impact on the SEC in 2010 than any other recruiting or coaching decision since.

He came to a crossroads of his own making and chose to leave Florida, and Auburn is glad he did.

But what about Florida? Deep down, in places they don’t talk about at press conferences, how can the Gators look at Newton in different shades of orange and blue and not wonder what might’ve been?

The young man they signed to be the next Tim Tebow is playing like a bigger and faster version of Superman himself. Did Tebow ever take off horizontally at the 7-yard line and come down to earth in the end zone?

Meanwhile, Florida starter John Brantley, who signed with the Gators at the same time as Newton in 2007, who competed with him to succeed Tebow, is experiencing the normal growing pains of a first-year starter.

Newton’s maturation began long before he took his first snap and dropped his first jaw in an Auburn uniform. The turning point for him came two years ago when he followed a really dumb mistake with a really smart decision.

After foolishly buying a stolen laptop and then tossing it out the window in a panic when the cops came to call, Newton got arrested. Urban Meyer suspended him indefinitely but – to the coach’s credit – didn’t kick him off the team.

Newton stayed in school to finish the semester, then decided to start over at Blinn Community College. After a year and a juco national title there, he chose Auburn.

I understand that Newton, who completed a pretrial program and had his charges dropped, could’ve stayed in Gainesville and tried to work his way back into Meyer’s good graces. He wouldn’t have been the first Florida player to travel that road.

But with Tebow coming back for his senior year and coordinator Dan Mullen leaving for Mississippi State, it made more sense for Newton to get a fresh start elsewhere.

He had to wonder if he’d ever get a real chance to earn the starting job with the Gators. Imagine if he had.

No offense to Barrett Trotter, but Auburn would not be 4-0. All apologies to Brantley, but Florida would not be such a big underdog at Alabama.

Marcel (BAMA) was hanging with Marvin Austin (UNC) who was paying for everything. When Marcel discovered that Austin was getting the money from an agent, he promptly returned to Tuscaloosa, told Saban, and spilled his guts to UA’s and the NCAA’s compliance officers.

Well, the Heisman candidacy of Marcus Lattimore sure was derailed in a hurry…..can’t play the woeful Georgia defense every week.

Ingram certainly picked up where he left off last year…… Running all over Duke wasn’t a big surprise, but given how well Arkansas was playing last Saturday, his 157 yards was pretty impressive. And Trent Richardson got his yards also…..

Ol’ Urban is facing the difficult decision a lot of coaches have to make….do I go for the win, or do I send a message about anti-social behavior? …….most go for the win, although Rainey still misses the Bama game. At least Urban thought Rainey’s offense was bad enough for a whole game suspension. It doesn’t matter, the Gatuhs don’t have much of a chance against the rising Tide in Tuscaloosa.

I guess Gameday going to Eugene, Oregon instead of Tuscaloosa was a bone to the PAC-10 for their only really big game of the year……at least we hope it’s going to be a big game.

The Big Least is definitely worse than the ACC. No one really knows who’s in the Big Least anymore because their teams aren’t necessarily in the East. The ACC should schedule Big Least teams for out-of-conference opponents….it would improve their record against BCS conferences.

LSU needs to play really good defense….their offense can keep any of their opponents in the game.

This Playoff PAC bunch are another example of a vocal minority stirring up a pile to get their way….crying, kicking, and screaming hasn’t worked so far. We know it’s those little western conference schools behind all of this whining. Sic’n the IRS on anyone is un-American….no one likes the IRS. I guess desperate people will engage desperate measures……And why are they griping so much? They have Boise, Utah, and TCU ranked, and they don’t have anyone else to rank.

I still can’t believe the Dawgs are 1 – 3. Shoulda, coulda, woulda,………we are what our record says we are……bad.

But we’re still the Georgia Bulldogs and that’s still a good thing!

The most noteable improvements I have noticed with LSU’s defense are a much stronger pass rush and Drake Nevis’ emergence as a star player. Nevis has been a part-time starter fensive tackle but thus far this season he has played like an all-american.

The Tigers were torched by UNC but nearly half of the passing yards came on 2 bombs, including a 97 yard TD, the longest play LSU has given up in history. Since then the Tigers have seemed to fix that problem.

I’m not so sure they have the best defense in the SEC but for the Tigers to have any chance to win the defense has to continue to play well.

1. Urban Meyer has to sit this kid for the remainder of the year. In 9 out 10 other situations like this they person would be sitting in jail, or still facing felony charges as the law in Florida allows the DA to disregard any victims wishes. If Urban does not keep Rainey from playing this year the liability of the University is at stake an the UF Football program is at stake.

2. When a kid is “hungry” like Mark Ingram it is easy to separate the good players from the great players. There are a handful of great players and most of them are in the SEC, we are all fortunate to witness each week great players like Ingram, Tebow, Newton, Lattimore, Peterson etc. The Heisman is Ingrams to lose.

3. The PAC has been doing any and everything to make a case for a playoff, because this group thinks the SEC, Big 12 and Big 10 are at an advantage in the current BCS system. If this group gets their way , the Big 4 conferences willl be at a distinct disadvantage.

4. The ACC does not have a flagship school to carry the conference banner. The Big East was not designed as a football conference, it was for basketball, and any carryover they get in football is icing on the cake.

5. I would not say LSU is the BEST defense in the conference, I would say Peterson is the best Defensive player in the conference. We will see in the next 4 weeks how good LSU really is.

6. Tony, any article that includes the Florida Gators will automatically require a post from Tampa Gator who will spew how right Urban is , how good florida is and demonstrate a bias that is so way off base you will get a sugar high.

Tony;

I liked Chavis (i.e. Chief) when he was the coordinator at Tennessee; the players loved him…

HOWEVER, the one thing that drove Tennessee fans crazy, was Chavis was unwilling to EVER blitz or bring pressure on third and long. His conservative nature cost Tennessee dearly in several big games against good QB’s. As we saw in the UNC game, LSU sat back and let UNC drive straight down the field playing ‘bend, but don’t break” UNC did have two throws too the endzone to win. Against good coaches and qb’s, Chavis style will certaintly cost u playing that conservative.

Trust me; ask any Tennessee fan who watched in agony many times as teams came back and beat us while we sat back in the base 4-3 defense on 3rd and 10 and got burned play after play…Chavis is the best 1st and 2nd down coordinator in the country; he just has no stones on 3rd down

“But the lawyers who, work (free of charge) for Playoff PAC, have been sifting through the tax returns of the four BCS bowls looking for dirt…”

Wow Tony…this sounds an awful lot like the way the NCAA operates to me.

TMZ reports that AJ Green is among the football players that attended an agent’s party in Miami…The irresponsible website included AJ in their story (with absolutely no proof) because he is one of the 5 best players in the country. The NCAA also found no proof of any kind that AJ went to the party; so they asked for his bank records…looking for dirt. And they found some—and this dirt was totally unrelated to the TMZ story and the reason for their investigation. The NCAA then hands down a totally disproportionate penalty.

Hopefully these lawyers will turn up enough dirt to hand down an equally disproportionate penalty to the BCS…and I further hope that the NCAA goes down next.

Corch and GaGator…I have watched this play several times as well.

I think this happens in every single football game. A lineman is clearly beaten by speed and dives to try and protect his QB. (Is it just pro ball where the player has to be engaged with another player before it is considered a chop block?)

Even if it is against the rules it is nowhere near as dirty as Brandon Spikes trying to gouge out an eye…or laying on top of Knowshon for an extra 15 or 20 seconds after the play was over screaming in his face (under the watchful eye of Penn Wagers no doubt).

Let’s talk about offensive pass interference for a minute too. Every UF player is coached to pull on DB’s when they make their cut…and being one of 2 of the darlings of the SEC the refs never ever call it.

Hey Tony,

Just want to let you see what a good journalist can produce.

Finebaum: Alabama and Florida is college football’s most important rivalry

Florida and Alabama have become the gold standard in college football. While it doesn’t have the tradition and pageantry of Ohio-State-Michigan, OU-Texas, Georgia-Florida or even Auburn-Alabama, it is the most meaningful rivalry in college football today. Perhaps it’s because these teams don’t play each unless it’s really important. This battle isn’t for something stupid like the “Iron Skillet” or the “Old Oaken Bucket.” The winner of this bare-knuckles brawl usually gets to play for the national title. Pretty simple, huh?

You have the two best coaches in college football. You have the immediate past history of the two most recent BCS winners. You have a game which now marks the third straight year the two have met and one of the combatants is No. 1 in the nation. In fact, this game is a tad below the normal fare since Florida is in the low rent district of the ESPN poll at No. 7. The 2008 and 2009 games matched No. 1 vs. No.2 on a neutral site.

But the odds are high that this is only round one for 2010. And you have an interesting turn of events. In 2008 and 2009, the Gators were the king of college football with Alabama nipping at their heels. Now, Florida is trying to wrest back the mantle from the Tide.

I am willing to grant Auburn respect for what they accomplish on the field; however, doing the same for their fans gets harder every week. As for 2004, the Heisman trophy was not revoked. Also, I guess Auburn never knew about 1966 when the AP and UPI gave Bama the shaft and denied us A THIRD CONSECUTIVE AP TITLE. Last two years, I had a boss who claimed to be a big Auburn fan……..let me tell you this: 36-0 in 2008 and the BCS title in 2009 were quite enjoyable and I never said one word bad about Auburn.

1. Urban Meyer is rolling the dice with Chris Rainey: For the life of me I don’t get why something is not done to Urban Myer and this program. Gator Faithful, please don’t get me wrong, I have a great amount respect for the amount of success Myer has had in Gainesville, I mean two national titles is pretty damn impressive. But at what cost? What point does the NCAA come in and lay the hammer down. USC (who I hate just as much as a lot of others) has one guy (nobody else was caught taking money + benefits) be selfish and USC gets some pretty harsh penalties. Meanwhile Florida has guys left and right get arrested for some pretty heinous acts. Something is out of whack.

2. I was wrong about Mark Ingram and the Heisman Trophy: Ingram is a stud, he took over the game Saturday against the Hogs. If he keeps this up he’ll be in NY in December. I felt like he was showboating a bit in Fayetteville, all game long pointing to the Arkansas fans to be quiet. Just play the game.

3. Playoff PAC is out of line: Tony, I live in D.C. and know people who have crossed paths with PAC. These guys are notorious for looking for that payday and I agree with you on them exploiting a first-rate political process.

4.The ACC may be bad, but the Big East is worse: What has happened to these two leagues!?! When Miami joined ranks with Florida State, and you already had Virginia Tech I remember still living back west in Pac-10 country, thinking “These guys are going to be unstoppable. You’ll see the ACC in the national title game every year.” Well not so fast, because their football product has dropped off the face of the earth. The Big East I’m not too surprised at, what have they done recently to really make a dent on the national stage? The ACC’s irrelevancy is really shocking though.

5. LSU may have the best defense in the SEC: I’m really looking forward to see how this LSU team develops throughout the year. Can their offense get anything going moving into the middle of the schedule, with some difficult games looming? Their offensive production at QB has been pretty dismal, and I’m just now sure how long they can lean on that defense. From an Oregon Duck perseptctive, I’ll be pulling for Rocky Top this Saturday as they battle LSU.

Tony, you’re absolutely wrong. BCS football isn’t “just a football game.” Everyone with any grasp of modern college football knows the BCS is a cartel that conducts itself like a corporate enterprise who’s only concerned about money. Given this, the Playoff PAC is going down a legitimate path in attacking the BCS in this way, by attacking their wallet.

Quit calling for a playoff while simultaneously criticizing THE ONLY ONES who are actually doing something tangible to bring one about. Like the rest of the media and fans, Tony only talks about a playoff. Playoff PAC is actually attempting to do something about it, unlike you. Quit crapping on them.

What rule is there in the NCAA that says a program should get in trouble when players are arrested? If there is one I guess UGA would get the death penalty since they have a LARGER amount of players getting arrested than UF under Meyer does. Also the players at UF who have committed more aggregious offenses have been kicked off the team. Selling Florida’s talent short I think. This game could turn into a blowout with turnovers, but that could happen on either side. As i said earlier, I like Bama to win because I think Saban as a better game day coach and McElroy, unlike Brantley, has been there before.

Wow, there’s a stretch!
I KNOW the girl in Gainesville (and I use that term loosley – she’s apparently well into her thirties & makes a hobby of UF football players) isn’t a student athlete and I don’t think the girl at Virginia was either.
Their remedy is a protective order, enforced by the proper authorities.
Even if the universities kicked these boys off their teams and out of school, there’s no legal vehicle that banishes them from remaining in town.
And if they commit a second attack in violation of the protective order – they go to jail.

I won’t defend what Rainey did, but I will defend Rainey. What he did was clearly wrong, although I disagree that it merited the felony stalking charge that it originally brought, Gainesville is very sensitive community when it comes to women’s issues, partly because it exhibits some of the typical tendencies of a “liberal college town,” but also because of the collective community memory of Danny Rolling’s gruesome murders of four coeds and one of their boyfriends. Gainesville has a self-percevied “zero-tolerance” for violence against women, but this can lead to well-intended over-reaction, as I believe happened in this case. Couples can have ferocious arguments without it amounting to “stalking,” and, yes, young people can and will say stupid things in the heat of a moment. I’m fairly sure that I said on more than one occasion that I would like to “beat the bejeebers” out of someone when I was Rainey’s age (although, to the best of my recollection and belief, I never said it regarding a woman). Rainey has no history of team discipline problems, no history of violence, and no prior history of problems with women. By all accounts, he’s a good kid who screwed up, and has just received a very serious life lesson about choosing one’s words carefully, and more importantly, making sure that one’s behavior regarding women is above reproach.

Does the kid deserve a verbal spanking from a judge? Yes. Does he deserve another dressing down and a time-out from his coach–a coach who emphasizes “respect for women” as one of the five pillars of team behavior? Absolutely. In the absence of any other issues, does he deserve a second chance after taking his lumps? I think so. I’ll make this hundred dollar bet right now: if reinstated by Meyer, Rainey will not have another run-in with a woman while he is a Gator. Go ahead, take me up on it; I’m good for the c-note. But please be prepared to pay up when Rainey graduates without any more discipline or legal problems.

I don’t know if it is that Saban is a better in-game coach than Meyer or the fact that he has more in-game options. Last year (and this year), BAMA runs a multiple formation offense (i.e. Wildcat, Power I, Pistol, Pro Set, Spread). If something isn’t working, they can switch to something else. Last year, that wasn’t the case at Florida. But, in Florida’s defense, the spread has worked 25 out of the last 26 games heading into the SECCG.

ga gator,

In the UT game, BAMA was up 9 with 3:30 to play. Saban was content with grinding out a victory and going home. Then the inexplicable happened:

1. Ingram lost a fumble for the first and only time in his career
2. UT, able to muster only 3 points up that point, scored in 2 minutes
3. UT recovered the onside kick and moved to the BAMA 27

Things just fell in place for UT. Fortunately, they hadn’t thought to fix the earlier problem with blocking.

Silly comment, Joe. You clearly have no idea what you’re talking about and only want to score cheap rhetorical points against Meyer. Meyer has a philosophy of suspension, appropriate punishment, and second chances when earned, One of the players suspended by Meyer is now the starting quarterback at Auburn. Cam Newton may have earned the second chance, albeit at a different program. If Newton stays out of trouble and succeeds as a Tiger, I will be happy for him. Another player drop-kicked by Meyer was five-star recruit Jamar Hornsby, who later got a scholarship and a second chance from Houston Nutt, but screwed up before he played a down for Ole Miss. No sympathy.of Hornsby. Carlos Dunlap was arrested for DUI the week before the SEC Championship Game last December, and was immediately suspended to the detriment of the team’s on-field performance against Alabama. I can cite more examples, but Meyer does NOT bend the rules for his players or fail to exercise good discipline. Furthermore, Jeremy Foley wouldn’t let Meyer fail to discipline these kids if even if Meyer wanted to. Young men screw up; the measure of a coach and a program is what you do to discourage it and how you handle it when it happens.

I was listening to chuck and chernoff on the radio yesterday and Chuck did have some interesting points on the bama fla game. He picked Fla. to win. Chuck’s no more of an expert than some of us but he did made the point that Fla. will play in a 5-2 defensive front, something that Bama has rarely if ever seen. The idea is to stop the running game first and places an emphasis on the Fla. D-line which is pretty good and also deep with some emerging future stars also like Powell and Floyd.

Should make for some interesting football to see how we handle a defensive front we don’t see a lot of. Likewise we also employ a boatload of offensive formations- everything from a no back, 5 wideout set to the pistol to the traditional I formation.

It’ll be one big chess match to be decided by a few key, big plays. I’m still giving us the edge by a small margin based on the crowd and a little more seasoned qb but a big play blocked punt or pick 6 can change everything. Gonna be a good one.

I’ve always liked and respected Richt. But in my view if he doesn’t discipline ben jones for the eggregious cheapshot he took on that MSU player than in my book he certainly will have lost a semblance of that “moral authority” that people assign to him. Having multitudes of players arrested for several years now doesn’t add to any moral authority either. He needs to give a huge dose of discipline to his team that is years overdue.

BG, speaking as someone who actually graduated from law school, I can say that it’s questionable whether a crime actually occurred, and if it did, it sure as heck did not rise to the level of a felony.

BTW, you are aware that most first-time misdemeanors are either pled out or dropped, right? Especially those committed by first-time, non-violkent offenders?

This case was handled entirely properly and proportionately by the prosecutor and judge. Rainey did not “get off easy.” The misdemeanor was the appropriate charge.

As for Meyer’s handling of it, he immediately suspended Rainey in the aftermath of the incident, and the young man sat out three games and has not been reinstated yet. If you were Meyer, what would you do? Please, do share your thoughts on the matter, beyond, that is, trying to express your outrage that the kid was hung from the nearest lamppost for making a verbal threat that he did not act on (and apparently also because he plays for a college team you do not support)?

You certainly make some good points about “Zero Tolerance”…but one reason zero tolerance policies are so popular is that it takes a lot of personal judgment out of the equation. And personal judgments are often very biased and skewed. The circumstances under which athletes find themselves in trouble always seem to be a little more “extenuating” than others.

And I agree about Mark Ingram. I don’t want to see him win the Heisman again, just because I don’t believe anyone should win more than one. But he is certainly a worthy candidate.

Pleaded Guilty
A Modest Plea

By Evan Jenkins

The bank, a news article reported, “had pled guilty to charges that it made false entries.”

Why “pled”? A lot of lawyers (and a lot of lawyerly writings) seem to prefer it, and some dictionaries list it as an alternative past tense for “plead.” But we don’t say someone “pled for his life,” or “pled for mercy.” We say “pleaded.” And so it should be with legal pleas. Case closed, one hopes.

But no, not quite closed, and fair enough.

Drew Trott, a staff attorney at the Sixth District Court of Appeal in San Jose, saw those thoughts on the Web and was doubtful. He said he looked in the ultra-comprehensive Oxford English Dictionary and found quite a few examples of “pled,” starting with Edmund Spenser in 1596. For himself, Mr. Trott said he not only used the word and ran into it in both formal and informal contexts, but found it more pleasing to the ear than “pleaded.”

“I suspect it is for similar reasons,” he e-mailed, “that we don’t say ‘readed,’ ‘bleeded’ or ‘speeded’ — they are unpoetic…I acknowledge that we lawyers do say ‘deeded,’ but in that instance, consider the alternative.”

Aha! A point well taken. And more research seemed essential.

The O.E.D. traces “pled” to Scottish legal usage and dialect. The dictionary’s citations are balanced, and those for “pleaded,” by gum, include Blackstone, the giant of Western law.

**********

Bottom line: Within the legal profession, “pled” is preferred over “pleaded” as the past tense of the verb “to plead.” So, to review, it may be correctly said that “Chris Rainey pleaded with Coach Meyer not to kick him off the Gators football team,” but also correct to say that “Chris Rainey pled ‘nolo contendere’ to the misdemeanor charge of making threats.”

Tony…who in hell appointed you God and executioner over Chris Rainey? And I am sure glad the girl has more forgiveness in her heart than you do. And I am sure you also have no idea about the 22 years this kid has lived a model life until the day he suffered a concussion and lost his sense of normality. And by the way….Urban Mayer has respeatedly said….”Chris Rainey is not part of the team.” I fully expect Chris will be given another opportunity to set things right with everyone…in time…and after proving to Urban Meyer and the public that he deserves another opportunity. It might be this year…or it might not. But…I guess…you want to judge and destroy a kid’s life when the kid has never done anything (unlike the kid at Virginia who had repeated verbal and physical encounters with the girl he killed) before that even closely resembled irrational behavior….and like I have repeatedly stated….Chris Rainey has suffered a concusion earlier in the day…which can cause you to act irrationally. Frankly, the more I read you column, the more I realize the your limited ability to have rational or reasonably thoughts as well. WHAT A TOTAL JERK YOU ARE! I sure hope the AJC and CBS realize this about you soon.

P.S. If I were Urban Meyer….Chris Rainey could earn his way back on the team….next year….and proving in that year he deserves the right to earn it. But I would never judge and execute the kid like you did in this article. SHAME ON YOU!!! And not just because the kid is a Gator…..but the kid is not deserving of you low ball attack…nor is Meyer.

And the Vols fan who posted early…..I would not come on criticizing another program based on what happened recently in your program….you guys actually physically attacked people….including a cop….and most of them got away with it. Great message coming out of Knoxville, right?

I is well liked by almost everyone who knows him….including his best friends on the team from Lakeland….who have known him most of his life. He made a terrible emotional mistake of judgement for which he is paying dearly for….both by the state’s attorney….and by not being a part of the team by Urban Meyer….and my most likely losing the woman he cares about. Ben “fat redneck” Jones cuts a guy from Ms State 20 yards down field and the sweet baby sitter Richt takes him out for one play. The guy could barely get off the field under his own power. Greg McGarrity is a very smart AD. He knows that the Dawgs are in a rebuilding phase, and may continue to be in some phase of rebuilding for the next two to three years. I suspect McGarrity also believes that a coaching change may in the Dawgs’ near future. If so, the last thing the Dawgs will need during the next two seasons is a couple of road games against top-ten out-of-conference opponents.

I have defended Richt over the last three seasons because I believed he was a good coach with a lot of long-term potential. Now, I am in wait-and-see mode. Regardless of his personal merits and coaching skills, change may become inevitable. Sometimes, even good coaches need to be replaced for the greater good of the program. UGA may be approaching that tipping point.

No, some things are not excusable, regardless of which player at what school is involved. The particular topic today involved Gator Chris Rainey, a first-time offender with no history of legal or team discipline problems. Even though his screw-up involved no actual violence against the woman in question, threats against women are not exceptable. To be clear: I am not defending what he did, but I am defending a good kid who screwed up and I believe he should be given the opportunity to redeem himself and earn his way back into the coach’s good graces.

I’ll let other fans discuss the problems at other schools.

Funny to hear a UT guy talk about Rainey. This is the school where a handful of its players beat and kicked a law enforcement officer until he was sensless in a hospital. That is real thuggery and again shows that you cannot spell thug without UT.

Tony you write too often with an agenda. I am not a fan of a particular school, rather of college football in general. Florida has issues with it’s conduct, but so does UGA. Where are you calling out the Richt “Mr. Moral and Values” for begging for Greens reduction in penalty for breaking the rules? Where is your crying for Richt that has a conversation with a guy about driving and then the player doe sit anyway, leaves the scene afterwards but receives a 1 game suspension? Richt is not running an SEC program…If you are going to provide negative comments or thoughts, how about cleaning up your own house first…UGA is an embarasment!

But…for the record….I did not support Jamar Hornsby or Ronnie Wilson. I did support Cam Newton when his charges were dropped and thought he deserved a second chance….and he obviously did based on what he has done to prove it. Now that the charges have been dropped against Rainey….I believe he too deserves a second chance….but that should be next year after he has proven both to the state and to the university that he deserves that chance….over a period of time. That just makes sense….and it has nothing to do with being a homer for any team.

Tony, I agree with your concerns on any player who makes threats toward women. Even though the woman in this situation does not take the threat seriously, I think Coach Meyer should, and I expect he will in his expectations of Rainey. As far as I know, Rainey is still officially off the team. Not just suspended, but off the team. And Coach Meyer has not made any decision public on if or when Rainey will be able to work his way back on to the team, or onto the field. I think any reporting on the situation should include that context, in fairness.

TampaGator…i’ll be honest i haven’t read all your comments on the Rainey situation, and i don’t know enought about him or his character to make a valid statement regarding the incident…what i can do however, is give some perspective in my opinion only, and that is, our QB(Mett), was dismissed by Coach Richt for making a foolish and serious mistake while intoxicated at a bar and crossed the line with a young lady that shouldn’t have been…Had he not been intoxicated, which is no excuse this more than likely would not have happened….He is still a good kid who made a very dumb mistake…I don’t kinow the whole story only what i read, but if he did threaten the life of this young lady, even by text..correct me if i’m wrong, but i believe it was “time to die”..then he should have in my opinion faced some serious charges…doesn’t matter if he is a good kid or not..alot of good kids make dumb mistakes..i think what bothers everyone is that he seems to be getting off with very little punishment based on the info that is being reported…The point i want make here is that I hope now, the bashing of Coach Richt will stop as far as his handling of player personnel decisions when everyone is screaming that he should “kick the thug” off the team, instead of evaluating the circumstances and not rushing to judgement..I don’t know that a persons career should be thrown out the door for a incident as this…its not place to judge… but had this been Coach Richt and this young man was not off the team, the AJC and others would be bashing him…I hope Rainey can learn from this and maybe should get another chance, but if Coach Meyer reinstates him there will be alot of second -guessers…again i nor alot of people on here know all the facts, so i don’t know how they could judge, but when the situation with our former QB happened the majority of the people called for his immediate dismissal…and before anyone says these are two different situations, well maybe, but one did involve some very ungentlement like behavior and the other sounds like a threat on someones life, evern if they didn’t mean it…

dawgster

Oaktowngator..i do concur with what you said…Coach Meyer from what i have read has not made a decision and that is fair at this time…I do know that along with the dawgs, the gators have had their share of problems with off field issues also…I think Coach Meyer has been given the benefit of the doubt on his handling of these incidents based on his record with the gators and everyone is happy with him…Coach Richt on the other hand is not given that benefit as much and alot of that has to do with our record the past two seasons and when players get in trouble everyone wants Coach Richt to kick them off the team or “0″ tolerance…but when you do that and don’t evaluate each incident on its own merit, you get what happened to the Freshman Linebacker that was dismissed from the team on his first offense…its a shame that it happened, but at this stage, Coach Richt is bashed and we are called thugs, if a “0″ tolerance isn’t installed…I can assure you that if Coach Richt were at the level that Meyer is as far as accomplishments that he would be given a longer rope…again people who are ready to jump on Meyer at this point need to hold off until he actually makes a decision on Rainey…

dawgster – interesting comments. To be honest, I haven’t followed Georgia’s off field situations well enough to make any kind of informed comment, but I think Coach Richt should be given the leeway to treat each situation on its own merits. That should be the case for all coaches, IMO. If a coach shows that he puts winning ahead of the best interest of helping the players grow into productive members of society, then he should be dismissed for that reason, whether he has a good record or not. Just my opinion, and I know it doesn’t match up with the way a lot of programs are run.

Mettenberger has a scholarship offer from LSU now that they are willing to overlook his problems because of his talent. He will be the answer and may bring thm a SEC title in 2011 if they can keep him out of trouble. He has other offers but I think this will be a good fit and Mett will seek his revenge against UGA for letting him go.

UGA has gotten rid of 3 players for lesser violations this year and yet Mark Richt continues to get criticized for his “lax” policy towards offenses. A lot of this critcism come from Florida fans on the UGA vent which, of course, is hyopocritical because Urban has let several players (Percy Harvin. etc.) remain on his team for worse violations. If you think that keeping Chris on the team is right then don’t be critcizing UGA for doing the same. Understand?

RE Rainey at UF, while you are saying you don’t know the kid, it sure sounds like you are saying that you know better than those intimately involved with the situation, including the “victim.” That is pretty presumptuous of you. Additionally, after seeing your show last night, it definitely appears that you are on the bash UF for their arrests bandwagon right now. Frankly, we all should really keep our mouth’s (and keyboards) shut in this regard as our boys have been no better, if not worse, here lately. I mean, we have like 10 arrests in 6 months not including the athletic director. Tony, I must say I have become very disappointed in you the last couple of years. You were always one of the only remaining good guys in the business who did things the right way with respect to responsible and unbiased reporting. But you’ve morphed into someone who often clearly just reports things off the top of his head, with a heavy dose of bias, without bothering to pick up the phone and verify or get context from the people involved – all of whom would surely take your call same-day, if not immediately when placed. You’ve gone from a guy who always reported and commented on stories with a great measure of professionalism and percipience, to a guy who just goes straight for the sensationalist angle.

You also seem to have something against Urban Meyer the last couple of years, because you’ve put out sanctimonious finger-wagging columns every time anything happens in Gainesville that does not earn a merit badge from the local scout troop. You suggest that he should dismiss Rainey and wash his hands of him – a kid great kid who came from a scattered and shattered upbringing and has never been in any trace of trouble at UF before, and who would have nothing to turn to without football and the Meyer family….well, a few years ago Urban Meyer cut loose a troubled kid, among other things over some ugly clashes with his girlfriend, and a matter of months later, the young man named Avery Atkins had committed suicide. In his case, Urban truly had given him every chance he could, but the horrible sting of what happened when he cut him loose probably informs him a little more than you and I as to when and to whom he should extend a “zero tolerance” policy over an isolated and from ALL accounts a minor and over-blown mistake.
