First round of “playoffs” begins on Saturday

The first BCS Standings will be released two weeks from this Sunday. And right now it’s pretty clear that if they keep winning, Alabama and Ohio State are going to be 1-2.

But after that I’m not so sure. Will Boise State, the Cinderella, be No. 3?

And for all of you folks who want a playoff (and for the record, I want a four-team playoff),  just consider that a whole lot can happen between now and Oct. 17. Before the first BCS Standings are released:

No. 1 Alabama, which just escaped with a close win at Arkansas, will play No. 7 Florida (4-0) at home and No. 22 South Carolina (3-1) on the road.

No. 2 Ohio State will play No. 9 Wisconsin (4-0) on the road and at night.

No. 3 Boise State will play New Mexico State (0-3), Toledo (3-1), and San Jose State (1-3). The computers won’t like that.

No. 4 Oregon will play No. 13 Stanford (4-0) on Saturday  in a monster game.

No. 5 TCU willl play Colorado State (1-3), Wyoming (1-3), and BYU (1-3). Speaking of  BYU, the Cougars sure picked an interesting time in their football history to go independent.

No. 6 Nebraksa will play at Kansas State (4-0) and at home against No. 16 Texas (3-1).

No. 7 Florida will play at No. 1 Alabama (4-0) and at home against No. 10 LSU (4-0).

No. 8 Oklahoma will play No. 16 Texas in Dallas.

No. 9 Wisconsin will play at No. 21 Michigan State (4-0) and at home against No. 2 Ohio State (4-0).

No. 10 LSU will play Tennessee at home and at No. 7 Florida (4-0).

Given what you see on that schedule, how many upsets will there be and what will be the Top 5 in the first BCS Standings?

Here are mine:

1. Alabama

2. Ohio State

3. Oregon

4. Boise State

5. Nebraska

We can only hope the team that showed up against UK is the same squad that travels to Tuscaloosa.
Demps’ foot seems to be well enough that Meyer is saying he is going to play.
Whether he’ll be at full speed remains to be seen.
Arkansas DID expose an Achilles heel in UA’s defensive secondary and I expect UF to exploit that.
As long as we come out firing on all cylinders and not looking like the Keystone Kops of the first three games, it should be close.
Bama CAN be beat – AirMallet proved it until he folded in the fourth.
Good luck to both teams and . . .

agree that Bama is missing Cody. They’re also missing McClain, Arenas, Jackson, and Anders on defense. We’ll see Saturday how much of that gap has been closed.

But….they’re far from one dimensional on offense. They’re pretty balanced in fact. Bama has three very good WRs (and two TEs) that can all make plays.

I think this is a close matchup. Neither team is a world beater yet. Saturday is a tell-tale. I give Bama a slight edge for having the home field.

Bama went undefeated in 1966 (after back-to-back NCs btw), and finished 3rd behind ND and Michigan State.

Notre Dame didn’t play in bowls at that time, and Bama blew out a very good Nebraska team.

Go figure.

Jeff,

Agreed. Iowa is going to be the other big test for Ohio State. I’m just hoping that one of the 2 can get osu and as you said Iowa does get them at home.

ga gator,

Our pass rush has left a lot to be desired. And on top of that I can recall 3 times or more where a D lineman of ours had an open shot at mallett in the pocket last week and mallet simply outmanuevered the lineman and made him miss. Mallet aint exactly mr. juke and jive either so it was very disappointing to see him evade at least 3 sacks.

Ohio State will be tested by Iowa and Wisconsin. I think it’d be just nice if Michigan beats Ohio State.

Anyone click on that link that showed Ben Jones running down the MSU player and taking his knee out from behind? That’s one of the alltime worse cheapshots that I’ve ever seen. I understand Jones frustration with getting beaten up by this guy but the cheapshot he took was a potential career ender. Doesn’t get any worse.

Old School, Palladin & 3rdn8,

I’m not quite ready to be thinking about Florida, Auburn and Bama yet. Murphy is right that the Tigers are primed for an upset. It’s during the day and a huge game looms the following week in the Swamp. What many may not be aware of is that Jefferson was roundly booed on Saturday night and frankly I was embarrassed. That stuff is not good for the players nor for the recruits who were in attendance. Miles called out the fans about it and many fans are not happy. To me that’s a distracton we don’t need against a UT squadat could sneak up on us.

We are 4-0 and we have this stuff going on. I cant imagine what it would be like if we were 1-3.

Yeah. I was saying that I hope Wisconsin can take down OSU in 2 weeks and then Jeff noted that Iowa has a better shot than Wisconsin since Iowa gets OSU at home this year and lost in ot last year in Columbus. Hell if Michigan keeps it up I’m going to think the wolverines have a legit shot at OSU. How many of us would really have thought that possible in the preseason? Not many. But you never know in a rivalry game so that’s 3 good shots there at someone taking down OSU.

I was just looking at the Heisman “watch” list which doesn’t mean anything right now. Ingram is at the top. Now, I am really scratching my head as to how Cam Newton has not reached the top 10 list. He leads the SEC in several categories and has won National Player of the week, twice.

jumbeaux,

normally I can see a team looking past someone and getting caught but not in this case. LSU just has too many athletes for UT right now. I watched the complete UT game Sat. and it was bad. UAB just stormed up and down the field the whole game on UT. They missed 4 field goals in regulation and threw a pick 6 from their own 6 yd line with only a minute left in the 1st half. UT just looked really, really bad.

Our defense is coming around. What kills us is penalties and turnovers. I can’t wait for next season because Cam will be a senior and our two big backs will have more experience under their belts. Our receiving corps looks really good. We even have a big white dude who can catch and he has a cool last name.

Cam should be in there easily. I think that statistically he’s not up there as far as passing yds go but in rushing he obviously has done a fine job. And in terms of leadership and intangibles there is no question he is the key in AU being 4-0 as opposed to 2-2. One more big game and it would be hard to not imagine him leaping into the top 5.

Kinda surprised to see Ingram back in there so quickly. personally I don’t give much of a hoot anyway about the Heisman. It rarely really goes to the best player in the country, is highly subjective, to me its just one huge popularity contest and I gave up on it when Charles Woodson beat out Peyton Manning for it based on 2 highlight reel punt returns being replayed over and over and over on ESPN. Its early but if I had a vote at this juncture to me the single best player in America is Patrick Peterson. JMHO of course and we do have a long, long way to go.

**** ESPN’s Game Day in Eugene Oregon and not in Tuscaloosa…. Hmmm? ****

Was anyone else a little surprised, if not shocked that Game Day picked Eugene over ‘Bama. The sole reason that I can think of is that CBS is airing the Gators and Tide, therefore since it’s not on the family of conglomerate networks ABC/ESPN and they wanted to push one of their own games. You have the nation’s #1 team vs. another top #10 team, and Oregon at #4 vs. #9 Stanford. The previous having won a ton of recent BCS National Championships. Thoughts? Regardless, both games are going to be great.

I can see SC beating Bama. Their mistakes in the Allbarn game are very correctable and for 3 quarters were handing the barners their azz. Got to believe Ellis Johnson gets that defense squared away.

Trish – you are correct. Auburn gets no respect. Three undefeated seasons 57, 93, and 04 and only one National Championship (57). The reason Auburn gets no respect is because of loud fans such as yourself who constantly compare your program to Bama’s. Trish – the numbers don’t lie.
Be proud of Auburn’s program but don’t seriously believe you will sway folks that Auburn’s history is better than Bama’s. When you do so, you lose credibility. Oh, did I mention that Auburn was on probation in 57 and 93? Listen, Auburn is a fine school with a fine football tradition……complaining about the lack of respect simply is a self-fulfilling prophecy. For the record, Auburn has been on football probation more than Bama – why in the world do you guys insist on bringing up that stat??

Auburn has had 8 or 9 undefeated seasons in it’s history.

“The reason Auburn gets no respect is because of loud fans such as yourself who constantly compare your program to Bama’s. ‘
