First round of “playoffs” begins on Saturday

The first BCS Standings will be released two weeks from this Sunday. And right now it’s pretty clear that if they keep winning, Alabama and Ohio State are going to be 1-2.

But after that I’m not so sure. Will Boise State, the Cinderella, be No. 3?

And for all of you folks who want a playoff (and for the record, I want a four-team playoff),  just consider that a whole lot can happen between now and Oct. 17. Before the first BCS Standings are released:

No. 1 Alabama, which just escaped with a close win at Arkansas, will play No. 7 Florida (4-0) at home and No. 22 South Carolina (3-1) on the road.

No. 2 Ohio State will play No. 9 Wisconsin (4-0) on the road and at night.

No. 3 Boise State will play New Mexico State (0-3), Toledo (3-1), and San Jose State (1-3). The computers won’t like that.

No. 4 Oregon will play No. 13 Stanford (4-0) on Saturday  in a monster game.

No. 5 TCU willl play Colorado State (1-3), Wyoming (1-3), and BYU (1-3). Speaking of  BYU, the Cougars sure picked an interesting time in their football history to go independent.

No. 6 Nebraksa will play at Kansas State (4-0) and at home against No. 16 Texas (3-1).

No. 7 Florida will play at No. 1 Alabama (4-0) and at home against No. 10 LSU (4-0).

No. 8 Oklahoma will play No. 16 Texas in Dallas.

No. 9 Wisconsin will play at No. 21 Michigan State (4-0) and at home against No. 2 Ohio State (4-0).

No. 10 LSU will play Tennessee at home and at No. 7 Florida (4-0).

Given what you see on that schedule, how many upsets will there be and what will be the Top 5 in the first BCS Standings?

Here are mine:

1. Alabama

2. Ohio State

3. Oregon

4. Boise State

5. Nebraska

If stanford beats Oregon, they are my pick to win the national title.

Harbaugh is coaching those smart boys up in a big way.

just proves it can be done the right way.

A few years ago with Bama it was sad… As much as I liked Shula, especially being a Bama guy, we all knew he wasn’t going to take the program anywhere. Alabama is a supreme job and Shula was not a supreme coach. I had the attitude of “It is what it is”. AU fans always seem to think they are inches away from royalty. I remember going to the GT AU game in Auburn in 2005 and all day I tailgated listening to their garbage. Auburn was good back then, but the way they went about it showed a lot. I just loved their heads hanging in defeat as we all left the statium that night….

In all honesty, AU is pretty good and will win some good games, but in the end, they will never be Alabama.

Your points are all well taken. I’m not sure there is (finger and thumb close together) that much difference on the conferences. I think Oregon, and Stanford stays on the field with anyone.

Should make for an interesting bowl season.

as you probably know, we in the south get slammed all of the time by our perceived lack of education.

I enjoyed your comment about all of the CEOs coming out of Stanford. However, the last article I read re: Fortune 500 CEOs had Texas A&M leading the pack, and good “ole Auburn” a close second.

Somehow we manage to bumble through.

The Lee County Kittens don’t have a single player in the secondary that’s fit to be a pimple on Patrick Peterson’s butt. LSU has its issues, but that man might be the best athlete in the country not named Trent Richardson.

Well, I didn’t mean to take a shot at anyone with the Stanford comment. If anything it was a slight poke at the Cardinal because they probably have the stingiest academic requirements in all of D1 major football and it’s remarkable what they do on the field and off. Coupled with their casual, tailgate wine and cheese crowd, and apathetic fan base, I just don’t like them that much. I find their coach smug and arrogant. Whatever, it’s what makes for good rivalries and who doesn’t like a heated matchup. Problem though, is Chip Kelly our coach at Oregon is good buddies with Harbough. To your point, the “down south they are teaching SEC guys to read in 300 level courses” is uninformed and without basis. Heck if we want to run with stereotypes, I’m an Oregon guy, so I guess I should be wearing tie-dye and hippie sandals, and eating hemp while sitting in a tree protesting. Truth be though, all you have to do is head on down to the Bay Area and over to the east bay where CAL resides. Talk about hippies, wow. They have seriously hurt that football program, no joke.

With so many matchups between teams separating us and the top 5, I see very easily how we could be #5 when the BCS rankings come out, with them knocking each other out and with louisiana-monroe and kentucky ahead of us to be 6-0 when we have that rat b*st*rd Petrino come to the plains!

no clarification needed. I just felt the need to submit a brief PR comment in behalf of my beleaguered brethren in the south.

I would love to see Bama and Oregon square off…think it would be one of the most entertaining games in years. Not sure Bama has seen that much offensive speed in a while.

@mike smith…I HOPE Boise state gets into the BCS championship game this year. If they play Florida or Alabama(yeck) or possibly even AU depending on the Iron Bowl, the ensuing massacre might be embarrassing enough to junk the BCS or at least the at-large berths.

If they play Ohio state, it will probably be a 34-31 OT game and perpetuate the problem.

KingGator,

That’s more of saying than a reality. BAMA beat UF twice for the SECC back in 99. Aub beat UT twice in 04. I’m sure it’s happened a few other times. The better team wins. It’s not tit-for-tat.

the SEC is a crapshoot this year. I’ve yet to see a dominant team.

OSU looks to be the team in the Big 10, and I think Oregon runs the table in the west. Outside of Nebraska, I don’t think the Big 12 is as strong as in recent years.

If you assume an undefeated, or one loss SEC team makes the NC game…then how would you pick between OSU and Oregon?

It’s a lousy system, but it’s the only one we have.

Hawgs exposed Alabama -very poor secondary, still missing Mount Cody and a one dimensional offense. Urban has been limiting plays to 10% of play book, Tide will see it all this week.Tide won’t be able to run against Gators 5-2 D and Julio won’t be enough to make a difference.

5IML, you’re probably right. I don’t have the stats in front of me, but Bama’s luck is going to run out at some point this season. Either by way of a loss, or some scandal that erupts to set the program back. Check Bama’s history, and legacy of coaches that were mentored there under Bear Bryant, and the record speaks for itself. Charley Pell would be an example that comes to mind being a Gator fan. Either way, you guys will not repeat. Hasn’t happened in the BCS era yet, and my $$ is against it happening anytime soon.

Tide Rising

Lot of good comments today and few of the juvenile flames.

I thought we showed great resilience Saturday in rallying. But there is no question that we have some defensive work to do and that a youthful secondary is going to get burned a few times while we grow up. Same with Florida on offense although they looked like they are starting to gel offensively on Saturday. Should be a good game sat although I’m giving us an edge due to the homefield advantage and a more experienced qb.

Jumbeaux tiger had a good point about how many good teams are in the west- 4 very solid teams that in my opinion could play with anybody in the country. I give us the overall edge in the west but I I still think any of those 4- AU, Bama, LSU, and Ark can beat each other. UF and S. Carolina in the east are pretty solid also. Ut and UGA are just looking bad right now and UAB dominated and should definitely have won that game at UT Sat. Nothing else to say positive about those 2 teams at the moment and that’s kind of a shame.

Outside the conference a key game next week is going to be Ohio State- Wisconsin. Its a week from now but if anyone in the big 10 can stop OSU its Wisconsin so I’m really looking forward to that one.
