First round of “playoffs” begins on Saturday

The first BCS Standings will be released two weeks from this Sunday. And right now it’s pretty clear that if they keep winning, Alabama and Ohio State are going to be 1-2.

But after that I’m not so sure. Will Boise State, the Cinderella, be No. 3?

And for all of you folks who want a playoff (and for the record, I want a four-team playoff),  just consider that a whole lot can happen between now and Oct. 17. Before the first BCS Standings are released:

No. 1 Alabama, which just escaped with a close win at Arkansas, will play No. 7 Florida (4-0) at home and No. 22 South Carolina (3-1) on the road.

No. 2 Ohio State will play No. 9 Wisconsin (4-0) on the road and at night.

No. 3 Boise State will play New Mexico State (0-3), Toledo (3-1), and San Jose State (1-3). The computers won’t like that.

No. 4 Oregon will play No. 13 Stanford (4-0) on Saturday  in a monster game.

No. 5 TCU willl play Colorado State (1-3), Wyoming (1-3), and BYU (1-3). Speaking of  BYU, the Cougars sure picked an interesting time in their football history to go independent.

No. 6 Nebraksa will play at Kansas State (4-0) and at home against No. 16 Texas (3-1).

No. 7 Florida will play at No. 1 Alabama (4-0) and at home against No. 10 LSU (4-0).

No. 8 Oklahoma will play No. 16 Texas in Dallas.

No. 9 Wisconsin will play at No. 21 Michigan State (4-0) and at home against No. 2 Ohio State (4-0).

No. 10 LSU will play Tennessee at home and at No. 7 Florida (4-0).

Given what you see on that schedule, how many upsets will there be and what will be the Top 5 in the first BCS Standings?

Here are mine:

1. Alabama

2. Ohio State

3. Oregon

4. Boise State

5. Nebraska

Alabama played like a champion in the 4th quarter against the hogs but played like CRAP the
first 3 quarters. If Alabama plays Ohio St or Oregon it would be a miracle right now!! Forget
Boise St. and TCU they did not play anybody that matters like top 10. RTR

The Reporter: Mr McGarity, what is this pop defense the defensive players talk about ?

One player said it in reference to ” Grand Pop-Vince Dooley, since the plays haven’t changed since he retired.

Another player said it was because of the ferocious tackles they make, which is it ?

Greg: Actually, it is neither. Here is what it is based on.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WpByXzdMQfk&feature=related

It’s the Soda Pop defense, in this case The Pepper.

We make a tackle on every second, fourth, and tenth play of their drives.

I have two more to explain, but first I have to check the drug test results, from Monday.

I agree Tony.

There’s alot of football left to play and I have a feeling there will be an upset among the top 5 this weekend or next weekend.

How about the SEC having 4 of the top 11 in the Coaches Poll with 4 SEC West teams in the top 15? That’s remarkable for one conference divsion but we know it won’t last once they start knocking each other off.

Tony,
Your top 5 looks about right unless my Gators can steal a win this weekend from Bama. Not too optimistic about it, but you never know. Then comes LSU down to the Swamp. UF could move up to #1 with wins over both or fall into obscurity with losses to both. Time to step it up, Gators!

Even in quotes the term playoff isn’t appropriate. I don’t know of any playoffs where winning all your games still allows you to lose in the end

I still think that the Dawgs are in this thing. They can still win the East and get to Atlanta for a shot at Bama. Now that our ace receiver is back we will see some fireworks. Stranger things have happened. I have no doubts that we can run the table. Florida is definitely going down this year to the Dawgs.

i know you nat’l press guys establish your narratives for the season in week 1 and have stopped following the gators and think they still can’t snap the ball but they have improved every week and it’s becoming quite a story. i think we’re watching the next generation of great gators grow up in real time and though they may not make it through the season unscathed, the sec is in for a rude awakening if they think the gators’ time has passed.

baby gators get a new row of teeth this week. 34-24, g-men!

Tony,

Thanks for moving on to something positive today. I mean that.

In Saturday night’s game, the home field should be huge. Florida has one of the youngest teams in FBS and will be affected just as BAMA’s defense was affected in Arkansas. Yes, Florida played at UT but that’s different because UT is horrible this year. BAMA builds an early lead. Florida calms down in the second half but falls short in its comeback. BAMA 27 UF 21

BAMA loses a game (probably USCe) but wins out and plays Oregon in BCSCG.

Shut up with this playoff crap. Playoffs are when a season is over. Not 1/3 the way into it. In order to reach the playoffs, you have to WIN GAMES. You stupid tradtionialst make up these lame words to keep things the way YOU like them. College football is a joke without a playoff and this year will implode with about 6 teams being worthy for a chance by seasons end. But you’ll still be spouting off your playoff nonsense. You are a joke to college football, a uga homer, and a joke to your job.

Bama’s win over an inspired Hog herd was impressive, and solidified their place at #1. The Gators look like the next victim for the repeat National Champs…..but there’s still a lot of football left to play.

Mallet found out that the insidious thing about SEC football is that you can be rolling along, feeling in control, and BAM…..all of a sudden, you lost. Arkansas has a good team and will win a lot of games this year.

Now you know why Steve Superior has a love / hate relationship with Stephen Garcia……you’re cruising along winning a crucial game, and in 15 minutes and 4 turnovers later, you’ve lost a game you had controlled. Yikes !

Auburn looks like a team no one would want to play in Auburn……let’s see what they do away from home. Cam Newton looks pretty good……I’ll bet Urban wishes that laptop thing had never happened.

The Longhorns will have a difficult time with Oklahoma this weekend. After their performance against UCLA, they’ll be lucky if they get out of Dallas alive, after having been run over by the Sooner Schooner. There will be plenty of brisket at the BBQ…..

Oh, and don’t go to sleep on the Huskers. As a parting gift for our soon-to-be former conference members, here’s a butt whipping to remember us by……

And what about Georgia ? What has happened to Dawgs ? An over-rated offensive line, smallish running backs running between the tackles, and a bunch of square pegs in round holes on defense….all lead by an unemotional, even keel coach. Football is an emotional game that must be played with emotion, where people yell and cuss so that people around them know when they’re upset. Aaron Murray is the only thing keeping this team from being completely unwatchable.

Oregon and Stanford will be a good test for both teams. The winner has the inside track to the PAC-10 championship.

The talent continues to be spread out around the country……

Yep, it’s gonna be a very interesting year……

Sometimes a team struggles. Bama did in a big way against Arkansas: Two INTs to kill scoring drives. Numerous penalties. Blown assignments, misreads, and missed tackles on defense; also missing was a consistent pass rush. One thing the media has missed in their reporting: Bama didn’t substitute LBs, or DBs in the last 20 minutes of that game.

Any of these things can tip the scales against a team like Florida.

Florida is starting to gel in all phases of the game. Bama started to gel in the 4th quarter.

Should be an interesting day in Tuscaloosa.

It is time for Coach Spurrier to resign. He still thinks that he’s coaching at Florida and has three QB’s on the bench who could start in the SEC. Had he left Garcia in the game, South Carolina MIGHT still be undefeated. When he got frustrated, he quit on his team. Now his team will feel free to quit on him when the going gets tough.

The article on Coach Richt is pretty telling. Bama’s 2007 team had many of these same issues. I watched the Bama-FSU game that year sitting behind the Alabama bench. It was a sloppy game for both teams. There was no leadership on that Alabama team. Players sat in little cliches, laughing and horsing around while FSU handed them their heads.

That was Saban’s first season. Things have changed. They need to change at UGA for them to ever get out of this quagmire.

I am a Gator fan and think Bama beats us pretty easily Saturday. Florida will have to play clean football – no turnovers and few penalties to keep it close. I just think Bama will wear us out and win by at least 17.

dawgs stink at 8:31 AM

I read the article on the link you posted. It said nothing I have not known for 20 years. Of course UGA will never win a national championship, under Richt or any other coach.

Look at the record. In the past 30 years UGA has won one NC and five conference titles. That is it! Heck GT, one of the worst programs in the NCAA has won one NC.

UGA is an average run of the mill program, always has been and always will be.

But they put on a great show, Sanford is a great atmosphere and they will continue to fill the stands and make a profit.

But please, let’s put this “our program is of national championship caliber” nonsense to rest.

I haven’t been able to watch Florida very much this year. I did catch some of the Miami (Ohio), UT, and UK games.
